    I remember TH-cam showing up this channel 4 or years ago, during December, your channel kept me company and made me laugh so loud. I spent nearly a month alone, no one would ever visit me and was just working for home alone. I always enjoyed the way you deliver the message on each video, the variety of topics you covered and the way the videos are put together. I am never put off by the length of one of your videos, I always make sure I have the time to watch your uploads in one sit. I have a hard time describing my friends your channel, because you cover so much stuff and is all different and I love that. Your content made me want to dive deeper into Linux, while I am not a huge GTA V fan, I enjoy your videos about it. You've apologized when made a mistake and never let pride or your biases get in the way of facts. You're fun and interesting to listen to. Never stop making content the way you want Mutha, it is one of the biggest appeals of the channel and it keeps many of your subscribers (myself included) coming back. Yes, not every video is for everyone, but it keeps the subscribers varied and covers different areas of interest that many can enjoy. You're legit my top 1 TH-camr and entertainer and I will always look forward to your uploads.
    If I ever meet you in real life, I'll buy you a coffee or something. You more than deserve it.

      I've been waiting for this video ever since he talked about it in his last PC/VM video. During that time, I was able to build my own 5950x, 3080ti 16GB, 6750XT with KVM for Windows, Mac, Open BSD and Arctic Linux as host (managed to squeeze enough substantial performance with 2 to 4 cores on Mac for Final Cut Pro). I'm also building a future AM5 PC with similar components and will probably end up giving this PC to my sister (she'll probably get a job that requires 3D-rendering for projects). But, man, honestly so happy to get it to work with very few issues. But KVM and GPU passthrough is STILL a bitch! The "open-sourced" NVDIA drivers aren't too helpful.
      Edit: I have no clue if Threadripper is compatible with KVM. Haven't seen many tutorials/guides on them, but would love to use my 3960x.

    I found your channel through the VFIO subreddit -- I think lots of people saw your video and decided to give it a try -- so this is the kind of content I'm here for. Cool build! I put something similar together a couple years ago when I was just getting into GPU passthrough gaming. I ran into similar issues regarding heat and noise, and couldn't find a thin client or streaming solution that could handle 4K 120Hz stably over a network, so I ended up going back to a bare metal ITX system, but I am glad I played around with this stuff because I learned a lot. I'm excited to see a follow up video with the fully completed build and hopefully see some of your thoughts on the thin client issue.

It took me hours, and I almost distro hopped to Manjaro... but I powered through and eventually got the game running. I'm so happy I choose to switch from Windows 10. It's fun to both learn the operating system as well as play most of my favorite games. Soon, I plan to set up KVM/QEMU for a Windows Gaming VM. I have no idea what he did and all i can say is it cost me really cheap compred to the tech head i asked for recommendations. And im gonna say some blasphemous thing but he doesnt like Linus "TechTips" much coz hes cool on occassion but end of the day still a salesman thee end he told me. Always nice to have an egghead as a friend, saved my behind more than once.
      Edit: For some reason he installed Linux too and he told me if your gonna do something that involves privacy do it there so i work using that and i game using windows. • @m0n4rch911

      The tidbits range from the big tech guys is in a war and sooner or later Windows will be just like Apple and said Steam was a target thats why Gabes move is to introduce Linux as a gaming platform since yeah eventually theyd eat Steam too and Gabe wants options when time comes. Linux will get really big one day like REALLY big so better get used to it he said. The CLOUD thing is kinda vague and he just said you dont want your data to be hostage so keep your data to yourself end quote

      @@ghostlegit Linux is already big but yeah i get it about the AntiCheat thing. Anyways its the same as Nvidia back then and they make it hard for Linux to even engineer one so there's that. As Linux gets more mainstream "already is actually but yeah resistance again" eventually they will all fold like Origami. Its in Apple and Microsoft's best interest to disrupt every step Linux is taking to implement everything in their system and it will get even harder once Microsoft finally turns to Apple 2.0 since they'll have more control but then again thats another story for another time. Its just business, i dont like monopolies "Monopolies turn companies lazy and unfair" so i actually like seeing them fight for market control since that keeps them on their feet and as this saying is as old as ever " Conflict breeds creativity". They innovate faster since they dont want to be outmatched by the other dude so its actually better for us the consumers.

    To add up a bit of important stuff about the Swap for anyone following this as a guide: If you haven't taken the full commitment to daily driving Linux and still prefer to dual boot (even if it's redundant with the VMs), it's recommended to turn off hibernation on *both* Linux and Windows, since booting into linux while windows is hibernated or vice versa could corrupt your OS/files on whichever OS was hibernated.
    Also, if you're running a cheap/bad SSD like an Adata without a secondary HDD, running swapless is a preferable option, there won't be a difference in a premium ssd like a WD black or a Samsung EVO which will likely last you 5 or more years, but the swap will totally kill an adata within a year (speaking from multiple experiences), so if that's your case and you can't afford to lose a SSD, a much better option is to pick no swap then watch a tutorial on how to create a swapfile and manually turn it on when needed. I've been running a T61 swapless for 13+ years and it's not a big deal.
    Good luck! And don't let the Arch elitists bite! kek

    • @Zesuto3
      @Zesuto3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@yeahgirl11 I would say go for it only *if* you have free choice at your school over the software you can use and if you can spare some time learning a new OS/software, then stick to Krita and Blender as your main powerhouses; for 2D art Clip studio paint is extremely popular and it sort of works on Linux through Lutris with a few tweaks, but there's compromises, I still haven't gotten the asset store to work and it doesn't detect my eraser so I can only use the pen tip, then under a virtual machine I can use the asset store but can't use the 3D features for some reason even with a gpu passed through. I haven't tested Zbrush because Blender already covers all my 3D needs but I'm aware that zbrush is a must have for 3D artists, so I recommend you do your research before installing a Linux distro.
      As for drawing tablet support on Linux, stick to Wacom, particularly the Intuos and Cintiq lines; the other brands are cheaper but the support for mainstream Intuos and Cintiq on Linux is almost on par with Windows, the Gnome desktop comes configured by default to recognize a wacom tablet.

    litteraly also my dream setup, arch with apparmor and firejail (to give every application it's own home directory and my own home won't get cluttered) and a windows KVM for everything that i can't get to run on Linux (COD and some University programms)
    You are the reason why i am daily driving linux now for nearly a year and i've loved every aspect of this so far, went down a couple rabbit holes (like that firejail stuff) and it was so much fun every time i heard something new and started reading about it. Next step will be a second graphics card so i can also do that Windows KVM stuff, tried the single GPU passthrough but couldn't get it to work and troubleshooting was annoying since you are sitting infront of a black screen when something goes wrong.

    I recommend undervolting the CPU. I spent an hour or two doing it to my 5800X and not only does it draw less power and generate less heat (obviously) it actually performs better now as well. Gained a few percent performance for some reason

    • @dirg3music
      @dirg3music ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its actually a really common occurrence if you dial it in right, your core boost times get optimized because of the extra thermal headroom! In my experience every chip has that perfect sweet spot where the undervolt gives you free performance w/ better temps. Some are easier than others but theres always a magic config.

    • @Degeneracy420
      @Degeneracy420 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dirg3music i didnt go too crazy with it i just shoved the curve down to -15 on all but the 2 highest performance cores which are -5. I really wanted the -20 to work but it was just unstable enough it was a pain in the ass so i went safe with it. The voltage is just way too high on the 5800X or higher it was rocking like 1.45V per core. Now it cruises down at a comfortable 1.25V-1.3V which does a lot for the thermals. I have an overkill 360mm AIO and tons of air moving so under extended max load my whole rig peaks at 65C where the last bit of my fan curve picks up. It might not be quiet but ill take longevity on my kit any day of the week. I have headphones on anyways lol cant hear shiiiit

    I've been running Manjaro (XFCE) without swap for 2 years now on a 32gb, 16 core Threadripper system. You don't need it. I also think BTRFS is a better choice for the main system drive, but definitely format another NVME drive for games as EXT4.

    • @ransacked

      Same on my arch build I don't run swap. I don't ever need it.

    • @realEchoz
      @realEchoz ปีที่แล้ว

      definitely don't need it
      maybe if you run some sort of critical workload prone to run out of memory, but realistically if your 32 GB machine wants to use 48 GB of ram you'll be waiting for days while it's using your swap
      even for saving memory in my experience the swap generally won't be used if you have some headroom anyway
      if you're running 1 GB of memory and you spike to 1.5 GB it makes more sense, but with 128 GB like in the video there's no need
      i added a swap file for a month or so on my 128 GB system and after a month of uptime it was using 0 bytes, and this was on a hdd so not affected by measures in place to avoid wearing out ssds
      hibernation of course requires it, so if you want that you have few other options

    I guess you already know but, when creating a vm for gaming, use cpu pinning and group threads of each core (lstopo), also, if you plan on exposing l3 cache, try to stick to only one of the CCd .
    While number may be deciving, latency will decrease.

    I developed a script you can find on my Github that can be used to automatically handle different core count isolations, you just pass it in the VM's prepare/release script with the number of cores you want to add/remove from the isolations list and it'll free those cores to the host when all VMs assigned to them are done running.
    My personal setup is a machine that runs on 8-15 and another running on 4-7.

I used to get a kick out of powering up the PC without plugging in the Pump... get to the desktop & monitor the temps... it would drop quickly soon as the pump was plugged in.. I only cooled the CPU but not the GPU... I should imagine that's quite a lot of work...
