    As a 718 Cayman owner, some people suggest the 718 isn’t the best Porsche drivers car, and not at the level of a 911. Measure a vintage 911 from the 1980’s or 90’s. A current 718 is virtually the same size! And the perfect size!

    I'd choose the GTS for two reasons: 1. I could never get an allocation for a GT car; 2. I love the clean lines of the wingless GTS. And I would put lots of miles on it, as I did my 2015 Boxster GT (48K miles). Superb car that I sold to buy a 2015 911 Turbo S. But after a year and a half I'm looking at the mid-engine Porsches again because I miss the manual and the naturally aspirated sound . So your review is timely, and info packed as always. You waste zero amount of my time. Crisp editing. Thank you...The interior of the GTS can be ordered with the beige leather, as I did my '15 GTS. Problem solved.

    As I intend to use the car for pure personal driving pleasure on a semi-daily basis and thus have configured my build (I have a Cayman GTS 4.0 PDK on order, supposed to be delivered next week but now post-poned two months due to the global circuit shortage for the sport plus seats), I think the GTS is a much better option than the GT4. The price difference between the two in my particular build is around USD 12K, and while with the GT4 I would be getting the nicer aero package, better front suspension geometry, a 10 mm lower chassis plus nicer/wider wheels - I wouldn't be able to get:
    - Metallic black (only solid black)
    - Full leather seats (only the leather/alcantara mix)
    - Seat memory (n/a)
    - Entry & Drive (n/a)
    - Park Assist in the front (only in the back)
    - Multifunction steering wheel (n/a)
    - Internal aluminium door handles (only those "racey" but awful textile straps)
    In short, my personal take on this question is: If you will be doing regular visits to the track, go with the GT4, but for regular street use (and perhaps the odd track visit), the GTS all the way :-).

      Agreed. I'm planning on the Boxster as soon as they release orders for the 2022 model year (better financially for me) and I'll get the GTS over the Spyder for your reasons plus the automatic roof.

    Great video 🤓!!! Last February 2023, I acquired my new 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 which has the 4L NA flat six cylinder engine (same unit as a GT4) and a PDK gearbox. Power output (394 bhp) and torque (317 lb-ft) are a nice match to this car's sensible curb weight (~3200 lbs). The color is Gentian Blue metallic with a black/chalk all-leather interior and silver wheel rims. It's definitely an entertaining driver's car!
    So far, I've only done 452 miles but hopefully a lot more this coming Summer! The PDK is also a lot of fun (it's definitely quick) 🤓
    All the best and thanks again from Colorado!

  • @mikeshepherd726

    Having faced this same dilemma a few months back (only in a Boxster vs Spyder form), I opted for the Boxster GTS 4.0. My reasoning for this were two fold:
    1) availability with options I wanted. I was able to find a Boxster GTS in almost the exact specs I wanted, whereas with a spyder it was much more difficult a task (yes I was too impatient being on that allocation list);
    2) convenience. Living in FL, I wanted to be able to raise the top from the drivers seat when that sudden shower appeared out of nowhere. Spyder tops are manual.
    With that said, I don’t think you can go wrong with either choice. All of these models are amazing drives, and are incredible experiences. It all comes down to personal preference. For me, saving $15k and getting conveniences that I wanted was a no brainer.

  • @BillLee3
    @BillLee3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Now, wait a minute. Many others, including Porsche engineers, have stated that it is the exact same engine and exhaust as the GT4 with very minor software changes and a different redline - i.e. 7800 instead of 8000. Are you telling me that you can seriously notice from the seat of your pants 20HP (~5%) which only comes into play when rev'ed between the GTS's 7800 RPM and the GT4's 8000 RPM? That it actually materially affects the passing?
    BTW, that 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds is from Porche's site for the MANUAL. If you look closer you'll see they quote the GTS at 3.8 for the PDK which is only off 0.1s and that may be more about marketing than an actual difference.
    To me, this car is the GT4 with a simpler and slightly less expensive (and more tolerant of the street) front suspension. I guess it also has an additional "comfort" mode to go along with the GT4's Sport and SportPlus modes (not that the GT4 calls them that, but that's the effect).
    For me, the choice is the Boxster GTS over the Spyder because of the roof and little desire to track the car more than once or twice. Don't know which way I'd go if I didn't want a convertible.

    There is an option for a very big sunroof , its called the boxster gts 4.0 option. the argument of GT4 vs GTS , i dont think is limited to suspension setup only. You can raise the GT4 suspension , it is adjustable by up to an inch i believe. the front spoiler design is what i think causes the most clearance issues and therefore reduces the GT4s daily drivability, the GTS has an upward slant to the front spoiler , while the GT4 has straight and long front spoiler. Both cars are comfortable. GT4 you say is more rare ? There are far fewer GTS in my country than GT4 . Price is not much different between a good second hand GT4 and a new GTS.

    MotoMan,
    There are several two-tone interiors available for the Cayman, including black/bordeaux, black/chalk and espresso/cognac. Those brighten the interior considerably. My current car is a 2010 Cayman S PDK that I ordered in 2/2010. 126k miles and counting. I need a daily driver and therefore would never consider a track-focused car, no matter how close the GTS 4.0 is priced to the GT4.

  • @bradw922
    @bradw922 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I totally agree. The Spyder/GT4 is so much more special of a car and if you do not spec out Spyder/GT4 too crazy, you have a much more interesting car for almost the same price. When I was cross shopping I found I could get everything I wanted in the Spyder for almost the same price as GTS with a few options that are actually standard on the Spyder. No question which one to go with. If they had a more exciting front end, I would actually be cool with a GTS. Porsche made a mistake with the GTS by not having a dramatic Sport Design front facia like the prior GTS. Now that Spyders are more plentiful at dealership's, locating one is not even an issue. Keep up the great content MotoMan. I never get tired of your Porsche coverage. You could do one once a week and I would be happy

Likely won't happen, but I would strongly consider the upcoming Nissan Z if they offered a glass roof option - the Supra and Cayman are too claustrophobic / dark for me.

  • @davidrivera2165

    Exactly because the Cayman doesn't have a Sunroof is why I prefer the Boxter (981 or 718 GTS) version of the six cylinder GTS. Caymans are not ideal for those who might be slightly claustrophobic. Yeah the idea of a lightweight glass roof might solve that issue, but it will likely crack (see Mclaren's bad history with lightweight windshields). Now a Spyder (baby 911 Speedster) with the stick, that hits my sweet spot. Thanks George. I have to say, May 2020 to May 2121 has probably been your best year in reviews. You really can't go wrong with either - resale on the 991.1 will be better over the long haul. That said, you know I am going to say GT4. Whatever you end up with, come visit the hanger after you pull the trigger - it's been too long.

    get gts with the guards red paint (no cost) with the bose stereo, manual transmission (no cost), and natural leather interior. if you want the guards red gauges and guards red chrono clock face, go for it. see if the dealer will swap out (at no cost0 those too hard riding and unattractive, IMO, black 20" wheels for the 18" (or is it 19"?) boxster wheels. or, if you must, spec the standard wheels in platinum ($600) it'll set you back, as described, less than the base price of the gt4 and you'll be living in aston martin opulence with track performance.

    Odd, GT4 and GTS are very different cars and the GTS is far more useable - you don't buy them for status points you buy them for enjoyment. The 981 GTS and 718 GTS 4L are probably two of the best sports cars Porsche have ever made.

    Haha I don’t think using the ultra lightweight glass from the GT3 rear windshield on a roof of any car would ever pass safety regulations. Incredibly dangerous should a rollover occur. Panoramic sunroofs are dangerous enough as is in a high speed rollover, let alone fitting it with lightweight glass.

      @@allen624 Check out BMW forums for the same. Most BMW M engines have some sort of design issue, such as S55 and N55 crank bolts, VANOS and rod bearing failures in previous gen cars, etc. Thankfully, I have not had the issues that Nick Murray has had and neither have most people I know who drive various models from 987s to 992s.
      You are correct that the 991.1 GT3 does indeed have a design issue with finger followers. Porsche extended the engine warranty to 10 years and will replace the engine under warranty if it fails. After 10 years then buy at your own risk. The 991.2 GT3 does not have this issue nor does the previous gen.
