    Worked in a studio that had this amp and for a plexi style amp it was unbelievable versatile especially with that extra gain stage. Edge of breakup rhythm tones were incredible and those singing 70s lead tones were buttery smooth.

    This is probably my favorite amp ever. These cover nearly every Marshall flavor, and it's a damn shame that most folks couldn't figure out how to use the Vintage Modern.

      This may sound stupid but anytime I try out a new guitar at a store I bring mine down to the store. Amp and cab both lol. The Vintage Modern just brings a guitar out in ways that no other amp has for me.

      I have to agree with this because I always loved the tones other people got out of these but never managed to get a tone out of it myself. Granted I didn't take one home and spend days on it. But when I had to pick a head I could plug into a 2203 and sound good. Whereas the vintage modern I had to mess around and get nowhere ☹. If I had the money I would deffo buy one tho and figure it out.

      @watersnortmoment3734 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @chuckwuethrich5465 Treat them like JTMs or other early plexis. Old Marshall circuits had a ridiculous amount of bass, so most would only actually plug into the high treble channel or jumpered with the bass channel on much lower volume. On the vintage modern that means cranked detail, low body. You then set eq controls to taste, I personally like presence to be high as well.

    I worked at a music shop when this one was out. It never got any love. On one hand, I understand since it lacks a lot of the modern accoutrements (probably the worst effects loop I’ve ever used), but on the other, it is simply an amazing sounding amp, and just a blast to play through. As a studio owner, it has become one of the most popular amps amongst my clientele and gets used on nearly every record. As a guitarist, ditching my usual huge pedalboard and going straight into an amp that just kills like this does is super inspiring.

    • @qirico
      @qirico 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!
      Could you please tell us what is wrong with that fx loop?

    • @bulletproofzest
      @bulletproofzest 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@qirico sure thing- with most amps I don’t notice any difference in tone or feel with the effects loop engaged. Even switching this on with nothing plugged in has a detrimental effect on the tone and feel. I can’t put my finger on it either; it just isn’t right. It doesn’t necessarily sound bad, just not the same. Not to mention that everything about this amp screams dirt- so the effects loop is super dirty, if you’re running the amp dirty. If you’re hoping to get gilmouresque echo tone you won’t be able to do it with this amp unless you run a Boss tube amp doctor or whatever it’s called. Or run a device that goes between the amp and speakers and provides a line out that you can use to send to delays and a separate amp. But honestly, it sounds so good that I make friends with running everything into the front of the amp. I deal with my delays sounding mushy, because this amp just kills.

    I ahve recorded this amp yesterday! Just WAH!!! Sounds... GREAT!!! One of the best sounds I've ever got! IWe now listen to the recorded takes and any adding of effects spoils the sound, it's totally finished and it's just great!
    I love the high-gain channel on it (high dunamic range , seems it's named) - the other one sounded dull for me ears.
    And this amp really sounds as old Marshalls, I've met in my life! No 800 stands nearby!

    Nice video Johan...I had the 50w combo version of this amp, and really liked it too. I think it's one of the most underestimated and misunderstood Marshalls, because it doesn't do the metal stuff very well. I personally never used the mid-boost on mine, because I didn't like what it did to the tone, but you can get great break up (and great cleans too!) with it. 👍

    • @shoegazeforever8810

    The presence on these is what I first noticed and fell in love with when mine arrived. No amp, Marshall or otherwise has ever had such crisp classy attack and tone. This is not for metal guys. This is for the guys who love a JMP. Who wants to plug straight in, or use the clean with a bit of bite as a platform for pedals. Notably a Big Muff. Gets that Mascis tone off the bat with the gains at a little under noon, and a Muff with the volume and sustain cranked.

    Before I owned a Marshall, this was the amp that I thought I wanted. I had played a few in stores, and was stoked on them. Then I finally got a 2466 half stack (in PURPLE, FTW!!!!!) and... I didn’t love it. I eventually sold the head, kept the cab, and got a JCM2000 DSL100. It scratches more of my itches. But I still feel like I should revisit the VM series. Interesting settings. I tend to keep the detail higher than the body otherwise I find it gets a bit flubby in the bottom end. I also tend to use a slightly scooped EQ. It is much more responsive to playing dynamics and guitar volume than other Marshalls. It can be a hard amp to dial in which I think why it may have been overlooked. I've also heard that the "100 watt" really only puts out about 77 watts so it won't overwhelm the greenbacks that it was designed for when overdriven. Love mine and will never get rid of it! Great vid as always Johan! 🤘

The vintage channel is good but with the extra gain stage engaged the amp sings and is easy to control unlike some of the poorly modded Super Leads floating around. I like the stock KT66 tubes but don't know if I love them. They're a little on the soft side. I might investigate if the amp can take a set of EL34 without much modification. @jameslightningappleby ปีที่แล้ว

      No.the stupidest thing they did was not market it properly. Their marketing for it was why it didn't sell, and why discontinuing it was the only real option. Maybe if that didn't happen, they would have continued making good amps rather than going down digital avenues which has left them where they are now, sold off to a Swedish company 😔

  • @papawx3

    Now I understand why Marshall discontinued this amp. It can nail the Plexi tone for less than half the price of a reissue Plexi. Why plop down a couple of grand when $8-700 bucks will do the same thing? PS: Do yourself a big favor and get the 100w version, you'll be glad you did later.

      Sounds like a plexi with more headroom, doesnt get as crunchy as a real plexi though when I just dime the volume, I have a handwired 1968 50 watt super lead clone too. Sold the vintage modern.

      people didn't know how to dial them in. if you push the detail knob too high at low volume, the amp sounds very muddy and boxy because it has a ppimv instead of a regular master volume. what this is means is that at low volume the presence knob/nfb are basically out of the circuit which makes the low volume tone darker. the first time i played one i had no idea how to use it and i thought it sucked. now i'm mad i didn't buy one when you could get them for $800 easily. right now there is only one on reverb and two on ebay and they are both well over $1000

    One approach is to have High Dynamic Range on, then Detail & Body quite low - I suppose it puts an extra tube in the signal path. Also, a boost pedal works wonder for the top end of this amp, like the Solo Dallas Storm.

I don't use as an everyday amp, but it is the last Plexi evolution available from Marshall. Probably the best. Lots and lots of "in between" tones. Only the reverb is crap. Otherwise amazing. The only problem I have with the amp is the B+ is a little high for modern KT66s. Picked up a matching head and cab for AUD $1000! Great deal! • @massiegauthier1529

      Exactly, while detail will provide volume and gain for mid and treble frequencies, body will bring more bass and low mids; the way body works can be changed by pushing the mid boost button.

      It's just like Treble Channel and Normal Channel on a Plexi jumped together. Exactly what you have on a Plexi when you put a short jack from treble to normal input. They are volume. And the master is a PPIMV. It's just a modded JTM45 (50w) and JTM45/100 (100w)

    Great video. I have the 2266 Half Stack and my brother has the 2466 Half Stack; both with the 425A cabinet,which sound even better. I love the Low Dynamic (Vintage) Range with the boost on and a Phase 90. Bad Company. My only dislike is the function of the single button 4 position foot switch :HD range w/reverb,HD range w/o reverb and like wise with the Low range. I would like it to have a 2 button switch to control reverb and mid boost. Also,if your purple light goes out,don't pay $15.00 for a new one. Antique Electronic has them for $6.00 and it's an improved lamp.

    I bought one of these about a year and a half ago (because of various youtube demos, including this one). It is hands down the best feeling/sounding guitar amp I've ever owned (and over 25+ years of playing, that's a *lot*). The only hangup is that it absolutely *needs* greenbacks to really do what it does. In an X pattern with V30's, it's still solid, but it just sounds so much better through 4 greenbacks. I've heard people say that it's not as loud as a plexi, and owning this as well as a plexi, the answer to that is: UH, NOT MUCH IS LOUDER THAN A PLEXI. This thing isn't by any means quiet, but it's a conservative 100 watts for sure; which is actually pretty great because I can drive a single 412 with vintage blackbacks in it and not worry about annihilating $1000 worth of vintage speakers. I think it failed for this reason though, because pumping this amp into something with v30's really brings out the worst in the v30.

    The speaker selection really shines with this amp. Have you tried the 50W? Wonder how it sounds compared to the 100W?
