    You can use it as a channel switcher of sorts. Set to low dynamic range with detail on 8-9 and body on6-7. Set tones to taste. You get great jtm45 tone then just switch to high dynamic with foot switch for super saturation distortion for solos. I also have a 1978 2204 with 4x12 blackbacks which I have owned from new, but prefer the vintage modern for its wider range of tones, though if I was gigging I would probably use the 2204 as it just cuts through anything.

    My favorite amp! Not gonna sell this baby. A couple of points:
    ~ The Tone Stack is the same as the JTMs, JCMs and the other classic Marshall amps with the classic 100K cathode follower. Hint: Backing off the Bass control tightens up the low end so you can have the Body set higher, for example.
    ~ The Body side rolls off the Midrange above @500Hz. The Midrange Boost restores some of the midrange above 500Hz that was filtered out. It only affects the Body. I like it and use it a lot to fatten up the tone.
    ~ I ran 6L6s in my combo with good results when I was having trouble finding KT66s that didn't rattle. The Gold Lion KT66s I got solved that issue.
    ~ A world of tones can be accessed with this amp if you're skilled with using the guitar's controls. If your controls are always full up it's probably not your cup of tea...until you figure that out.
    ~ It's kind of fun having the digital reverb. I never had a Marshall with a reverb before. Like having a cup holder and vanity mirror in a truck. It's easy enough to turn off.
    Another fantastic demo, Leon.

    This is one of the greatest amps I’ve ever played through. It’s immediately satisfying, super fun to play, and (studio owner here) it gets used on nearly every project I do at some point. I understand it doesn’t have every bell and whistle of a modern amp, but it sounds absolutely amazing.

  • @AndyK.23
    @AndyK.23 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Definitely a killer amp and demo! The designer himself said the name means "Vintage tones, with modern features - Fx loop, master volume, mid boost". Players probably thought "dual tones, vintage, and modern high gain".

    • @MiguelBaptista1981
      @MiguelBaptista1981 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Loop sucks, Reverb is passable, Mid boost is a bit overkill specially with the ability to dial in body and bass to taste, and I use the Master always at 10, (Body and Detail to taste).
      Other than that, killer amp, and on LDR and Body/Detaly low, I get beautiful clean tones as a base for my pedals.

  • @GATvsGAT
    @GATvsGAT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You’ve made me love my 2466 again. Agree that if Marshall put this out again, they should make it a true channel switcher. The FX loop could also do with a redesign too IMO. I read somewhere that the phase inverter is a source of gain in this amp and it happens that The FX return comes in before the PI which means when running a delay pedal in the loop, the delay trails come out dirty like as if you are running the delay in front of a dirty amp. The only way I could get around this was to use a line out signal from a load box, into the delay and then the delay out to a seperate power amp and speaker. Quite inconvenient for what is otherwise a fantastic tone monster.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah little things like that make a huge difference. A reissue with a few small circuit tweaks and "high gain/low gain" instead of dynamic range would appeal to a lot more players. If this was a legit channel switcher it would be so good.

    Loving your video's on this amp man. I regret selling mine SO much. Pro tip, get yourself a detox eq from homebrew electronics or another good equalizer and you can use that as a sort of 'virtual' clean channel. Setting one up properly can bring down the gain by quite a bit without losing much volume (it really helps how dynamic and responsive the amp is). This way it's almost as if you've got a clean channel right there at the click of a button! Works really well on normal and high dynamic range. Can't take credit for the hack though, that's how Paul Gulbert used to run it when he toured with this amp.

    Hi Leon really glad you’ve done this feature which is helping to give the vintage modern the justice it deserves as a truly great amp. The reason it didn’t sell well is really down to ignorance. The people who get it are the old school players who understand that basically you turn the amp right up and use your volume control to get all your sounds with the tube screamer or equivalent just to add a bit more for Leads.
    20 years ago I was one of those people who thought you need different channels on your amp clean, crunch, lead and lots of knobs and now 20 years later I realise you don’t need any of these things. Just crank your amp up and use your volume control just like Angus Young, Michael Schenker, Ritchie Blackmore EVH etc etc.
    When you get the master to 7 on this amp you realise it’s all there.
    All the best and keep up the cool videos

      Leon Todd yeah, I had a kind of eureka moment with this amp at a gig. I was in a two guitarist band, the other guy had a Strat and I was playing an Explorer through the VM. The place was quite large and packed with people. so we got to turn up pretty loud. Past 7 the amp became so responsive to pick attack and the guitar volume I finally got what all these old musos had been banging on about.

    The Vintage Modern was marketed by Marshall as an easy-to-play amp but this is false. What the VM can do to a Strat is amazing but it takes time to find those great tones within them. Also, you need to be an above average player with a good and variable picking technique, otherwise this amp will make you sound worse.
    [I've just bought a 2nd 100W VM head for £575 (with new tubes). If Marshall did reissue them they would probably charge around £1600 for them (like the JCM 800 reissues). If Marshall doesn't reissue them then it won't be long before the used ones start to fetch silly prices. ]

      it takes a brain to run a Vintage Modern, thats why it didnt sell as well, but those of us with a Brain know that

    here I am again your favorite commenterrorist I don’t know why people rave about the JCM 800 or the Silver Jubilee??like I said I was in Hollywood from 1980 until 1992 and when Marshall released those amps everyone hated them now it seems 40 years later this whole new generation of players love those 2 Amps. Well, I’m here to say that I can’t stand either of them, the vintage modern, pretty much destroys every Marshall in every direction. again it was designed as a master class one channel, no nonsense, bulldozer of an amp, and that’s just what it does, it fills the mix, and can keep up and surpass even the most expensive of the boutique Amplifiers. There are really only three Amps that I put near it or beside it as I commented yesterday the SLO 100 by Soldano, a 1998 Bogner 101b and the Friedman, BE-100 2017 model. That’s 4 Amps that are the very best of the very best. They also sound best in their respective cabinets, although I don’t like the sound of. Soldano 4X12 or Marshall Cabs. The two best. 4X12 cabs on earth are the Bogner 4X12 Cabs and the Friedman Vintage 4X12 Cabs, Both must be the straight cabs. angled cabs have that strange mid range squawk on the top no matter what speaker you put in them as always. Thanks, Leon for making videos and thank God you realized the vintage modern really is Awesome. Remember I told you I spoke to Steve Dawson, who designed the Amp and it’s basically a JTM 45 and a plexi under one hood as the detail and body knobs replicate what the four input style Marshalls jumped sounded like. I’ve been playing for over 50 years and I’ve owned every combination of marshals and amp configuration you could possibly imagine this, indeed is the best Marshall money can buy. I say that knowing full well that there’s very few good sounding Plexi’s they’ve all been bought up and most of them modified! The only plexi”s that are on the market right now are pretty much run over and need lots of work. Some of the parts aren’t even available any longer. Plexi is a buzz word that I hear new guitar players parrot. I think it’s funny because most of them never heard one and today’s players use so much gain and distortion which is fine I get it but it’s really not a plexi after you start stacking a clean boost, and a couple of your favorite overdrive pedals in front. on a sidenote, because I don’t write comments, but may be a few times a year and for whatever reason you keep coming up on my radar. as an afterthought if you have to put some type of gain pedal in front of the vintage modern, I would recommend an archer ikon, Mythical overdrive (vintage spec) a hand wired tube, screamer, or if money is no issue grab a Klondike, although your generation has ruined the price of a Klon. I fix and repair amps and there’s only about $30 worth of parts in that box. The Archer Ikon is as good and in some ways slightly better. 🎉🎃

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey man, don't blame me for the Klon hype I was only born in '88! The VM pretty much nails the "what everyone thinks a Plexi should sound like" sound IMO.

      I read your comment, giggled with glee, and moved on.... but then I had to come back. What you said should be written on tablets like the ten commandments.
      I'm a neophyte guitarist and have a millionth of your experience and talent, but I love tone. I got tipped off to these amps when all I could find was a 1974x. I knew I wanted a jtm/45 (at least a crisper tone) and found a 2266 combo. I at least had the good fortune to see Johann Segeborn's videos before I got it, so I knew the right tones were inside; I just had to figure out the dialing in. I got the classic rock tones on the LDR,...BUT the real treat was discovering all the other tones on the HDR. After getting familiar with the general tone topography of the amp I threw out what one thinks one should know about how to dial in an amp, because this amp is a virtual candy store of tones. I'm dialing in shit that makes no sense knob setting-wise, but am being rewarded with stuff ranging from Mick Ronson to "Roxy roller" tones, and I'm wallowing in it like a pig in mud. It's like you alluded to: this amp is a jumpered jtm/45, with the option of getting additional glam rock 70's marshall tones ( in my opinion). It's not a channel switching designed amp--- It's a SOUND LIBRARY amp of all those 60's-70's Marshall tones. The guys who dislike it are the ones who are into jcm 800 gain and beyond. For guys our age this dirtbox is the shit! Via con Dios.

    Hey Leon, brilliant Video, getting some wicked tones out of the VM, brilliant Playing!
    Is that the Strat you had the Neck re-done, sounds killer. Would you mind giving me the name of the Luthier you used please.
    Take Care.

      Yeah it's had a full refret and the fingerboard radius corrected. Plays like a dream now. Tim Thompson at MT-Guitars in perth.

      Leon Todd Thanks Leon, WA, quite a distance from Melbourne, much appreciated though. Do you know of a reputable Luthier in Melbourne? You are spot on the DSL 401 and the VM are awesome Amps!

    I have VM2466, and I only use the clean channel with my Strat but I have a problem and I wonder if you have it too. I set the tone for strumming and soloing around the 7th fret but when I play high notes around the 15th fret (E and B strings) the sound becomes painfully high to my ears. Literally hurt my ears. Then I set it properly for these high notes not to hurt my ears but then the tone becomes too low when I play again around the 7th fret of the neck. Do you have any such problem? I'm so disappointed with this.

      Leon Todd Just thought... depending on what version your mate has... theres a stage 1 and stage 2. The later is a revoiced version. If your mate has a stage 1, i have a stage 2, so if you like and youre not too far from me (Yanchep). Would be happy to bring it down to see how they all compare.

    Definitely a Marshall I do not love, as I find it brittle sounding and non-sensitive. No wonder that Slash loves that amp, as I never made friends with the Duncan Alnico pro II ... for rhythm sounds, definitely, but for modern lead tones? No thanks! We both love 1960 necks and the Boss GE7 then :)

      @@cliffords2315 I never adopted the Vintage modern amp into my rig, but played it in the store in comparison to the other heads; the DSL50, Silver Jubilee, 6505 mkII but if I gave it like 6 months or more, I would find use for it. The power amp section is ... very dynamic :P

    Why tf does every guitar player reviewing amps put on a Stratocaster and automatically go to that shitty sounding 4th position using the middle and back pickup? That squawky sound is the worse, especially when you have the amp cranked so high that it sounds like a cheap fuzz box. Thumbs down.
