FYI, this might be a little pedantic, but the reason MSHvSF and MvC1 had animation cuts was for a slightly different reason than MvC2. CPS2 arcade boards are similar to cartridges where the CPU has direct access to all the EEPROM chips that hold the game's data, so animation doesn't have to be loaded into RAM - it can access all of it. So it wasn't a case of having to load four characters into the ram. Rather, the limit was the actual rom sizes themselves. CPS2 specs show a ROM limit of around 40MB and MSHvSF bumped into this limit. MvC1 did too. They were trying to pack too much into these games and had to makes cuts so they could fit it in the maximum ROM size that the CPS2 hardware supports.
That makes more sense. I know Vampire Savior ran into that same issue, but cut whole characters instead of animations since I'm assuming they (smartly) didn't want to compromise there (probably why Savior 2 and Hunter 2 are what they are, too). Probably why the console ports of that had no problem adding them back in, since that wouldn't be an issue with disc based media. I appreciate the correction!
Cool thing about Sentinels stage in COTA is that when defeated, the Master Mold is destroyed, presumably along with the base. If Sentinel wins though, several sentinels in the background can be seen deploying on a mission. Honestly wish more fighting game stages incorporated this detail
Even before I knew anything about the competitive scene, Sentinel in MvC2 (the first place I encountered it) just seemed like this intimidating monster, and to me, this is still the definitive Sentinel design. Also, my in-universe headcanon for that background poster is that Megaman was the one character the Sentinels just weren't ready for, and that he's still at large because well, taking down death robots multiple times his size is just a normal Tuesday for the Blue Bomber
I had to pause the video....Sentinel just casually smacking Storm in his ending for CotA was just too hilarious to see. It so unbelievably hilarious that I almost choke on my food. Poor Storm.
I still think 1.3M health was fine. It's interesting to hear about how the Sentinel has had push back from Marvel multiple times despite only being playable in three games. It's iconic to MvC despite being a pretty standard giant robot enemy force in the source material; it fits into COTA as an X-Men "villain" and it fits into Marvel 3 because of a decade of dominance in Marvel 2. You'd think Marvel would like how the games added to the popularity of their IP like that.
Sentinels, the Marvel equivalent to Terminators. Hunting down both humans and mutants alike, while suppressing humans for fears of becoming mutants. Oh, yeah, definitely cannon fodder to the X-Men, especially Cyclops, beheading one with a well-precise optic blast. Well done on this latest review. The future is a scary place, especially when the Sentinels running things.
Thanks! I try to put a lot of thought into the music choices for this video series, lol. All of the songs in this video are from things relating to robots or mechanical/industrial related things, for example.
I was hoping you'd mention it so I might as well add it myself: In Mega Man Legends series, there is 42 Servbots that...serve the Bonnes, Tron seems to be able to recognize all of them by number by just looking at them. Anyways in her ending for MVC3 (and the horribly cut down UMVC3 version) she gets a hold of Sentinel off-screen and turns him into Servbot #43, complete with a Bonne logo on his head. She takes this Servbot back to impress and fight her cru- I mean rival, Mega Man Volnutt MUGEN has a hybrid joke character based on this called Kobun 43 (Japanese name for Servbot) which is a Sentinel colored Servbot who has MVC3 Sentinel voice and does a combination of moves from both Servbots and Sentinels I love this connection and what they made up here
Jim Ward also returned to voice the Sentinels in Ultimate Alliance 3. But he's only credited as an additional voice actor. It's very noticeable during the Infinity Sentinel fight.
39:54 I love the implication that Mega Man is still out there, fighting against evil robots to protect the humans. If there's any Capcom character who WOULD still be fighting, it'd be him.
Tbh I think it would be interesting if it was X who was protecting people and everyone else assumes it's megaman, since Megaman X takes place in the future
39:20 That reminds me, Star Wars’ Dark Times storyline pre-Disney had a cover referencing Days of Future Past, with Obi-Wan Kenobi in place of Wolverine
That poster in the MVC3 stage always intrigued me, I never knew it was based off something from the actual comics and the fact that they put Megaman on there and left his fate unknown is so funny to me because right now in 2024 it’s been 6 years since Megaman 11 so that poster ends up aging bad since 11 exists and aging well at the same time since there’s no new announced Megaman game aside from random collabs with Street Fighter 6 and Exo Primal, still hoping for Legends 3, the leaked Rockman Taisen or just looking forward to X Corrupted with all the new gameplay clips I’m seeing.
At least the series, for it's lack of new games is still kinda alive now, if on life support compared to 2011. MM11 and the Battle Network collection are the two best selling MM games of all time if I'm not mistaken, and at least there's still those collabs and X Dive Offline. Around UMVC3, I think all we had was Bad Box Art Megaman in SF X Tekken and that was basically it.
The best meme by far was when someone changed the MvC3 box art so that every character was replaced with Sentinel in their pose on the box art and the Wesker one had on sun glasses. And it said “Sentinel vs Sentinel 3: the fate of two Sentinels.” I vaguely remember seeing one that had Meta Knight riding on Snetinels should while SF4 Sagat and MK9 Kabal are walking next to him on their way to go fuck up someone’s day. I played MvC2 mostly Casually but had been playing MvC3 since roughly about 12:30 am February 15th 2011 (psssssst that’s the release day for MvC3. They had a midnight release for the game) with the intention of going to tournaments. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand anyone who played MvC3 since day one in the competitive scene knows how to ply Sentinel. Even after the nerfs he’s not bad and I was already used to playing him by that point (out of necessity. There’s a reason they jokingly called it Sentinel vs Sentinel 3: the fate of two sentinels. If he wasn’t on your team in vanilla MvC3 you weren’t winning many tournaments pre patch). He’s my secondary anchor (depending on matchups and what my opponents team is or is likely to be) mainly cause 1. sentinel force is one of the best (if not the best) horizontal projectile assists in the game. If he calls the drones it doesn’t matter if you hit him they’re still coming from that moment . Also against teleporters they work well because the drones come from off screen behind you and pretty much all teleports travel to either in front, above, or behind the opponent which are all covered by drones except for above (and if you’re trying to catch a teleporter you can just press back to block high making the drones more likely to hit while still covering front and back teleports). They’re also very good at hit confirms. 2. He’s a pretty easy to play character that doesn’t require super heavy execution. One of the first characters I completed mission mode with was Sentinel and it wasn’t that much effort especially compared to other characters. 3. The good ole Super armor + cr. M, S is one of the most bullshit sequences of attacks in any fighting game. You just rank an attack and crouching medium hits twice very slowly so it’s easy to hit confirm and just shuts down so many approaches. Very good range too. And if by some reason you’re wondering who my primary anchor is, it’s Ironman. One of the best things with him is Proton Canon is a 3 frame start up at point blank range that’s an amazing tools to shut down anyone in your personal space. Literally the only move (supers included) that’s faster is Phoenix’s level 3 after collecting all the evidence that’s a 0 frame start up that hits the entire screen. Slap on X Factor and Ironman is doing some wild shit.
This is a great time due to X-Men 97 and Deadpool and Wolverine coming out. Honestly it's interesting Sentinel is one of the best character across games along with Magneto and Storm to be strong picks in winning tournaments.
I still remember beating arcade mode in vanilla MVC 3 for the first time and being surprised when I first unlocked Sentinel. I was like, “Woah you can fight as a Sentinel?!” I immediately picked him just to try him out.
One of the opponents that Combofiend had to face during his iconic BIONIC ARM! scene 🤣. Can't wait for the next characters, especially for Chris. In MvC3/UMvC3, Chris uses Leon's Silver Ghost handgun from RE4 (Original) and in the MvC:I, he uses his Samurai Edge (Beretta 92fs with wooden grips). Theme: "remixed version of "Majini V" (MvC3) and Assault Fire in MvC:I which was the original mercenaries theme before being replaced with the Mercenaries Reunion remix version.
Huh, I did not expect Sentinel from that community post, but I can't say I'm complaining, I don't have much on COTA and MVC2, (I haven't unlocked him in the latter) but I love playing as him in Marvel 3, once I picked him when getting classic mode endings, I loved what I played and now he's on my main team actually, (The others being Hsien-Ko and Doc Doom) I probably wouldn't take him online if I did play online though, even if he's not that bad in MVC3 but I would rather not purely on how infamous he was/is, nice to hear you talk about the Days of Future Past stage too, I personally think that's my favorite fighting game stage of all time, as I mentioned in Baberuthless's vid. I'm also kinda surprised you didn't reference the "How to Beat Sentinel in Marvel Vs Capcom 3" video, granted that hasn't gotten officially referenced by capcom unlike some others so I get it.
I had actually forgotten the name of the video, but the "Don't F with Sentinel in X-Factor" bit still lives rent free in my head. If I had remembered the name of the video, it would've definitely gotten a nod in this.
I'm gonna be honest, when Sentinel was revealed ( I think he was like the LAST character to be revealed, for Vanilla MVC3, right) I was a little broken up because I wanted a "real character" and not what I saw at the time as a big meme from a video/my most hated OP character from Marvel 2. I suppose I should have been grateful to have any X-Men characters at all, cuz brother Marvel vs Capcom Infinite could have used something as out of the MCU box as Sentinel. I think narratively The Sentinels at their best being big hulking machines that will destroy a mall trying to capture one harmless schoolgirl and at worse going rogue and deciding to turn on Humanity (or indeed deciding that Mutants are Humans and Humans are Mutants) is very compelling, but even as a young guy I understood why shrinking Sentinels for the fighting game was the correct choice.
Not seeing Sentinal's jumping Saw blade kick and his Plasma Storm blasts was disappointing for me when I first played Marvel 2, but then I got ovr it when I saw how broken the character was. Good job as usual TheSeventhForce!
Sentinel is a prime (pun intended) example of why i think i’ll always prefer older sprite based fgs over their 3D counterparts And hell there has got to be atleast one alternative dinension where we got our cake and ate it too with MVC2 having all the fleshed out animations with it
I kind of like both styles equally, though I think bad looking/poorly stylized/cheap 3D modeling is always going to look worse than bad pixel art. That said, I think Sentinel's a good example of 3D working out for a previously sprite based character; I love that they recreated a lot of animations in MvC3 that they had to cut for MvC2.
As much as I hate the sentinels in the comics and cartoon, absolutely loved him as a fighting game character! It's crazy that braveheart lion plays his voice! Just shows you that man's range! Just so much to Marvel at how much Capcom put into this mutant hunter! If you ever get a chance and you want to go over other details of sentinel, please do!
Man, I found your channel today and I already loved it but man, hearing Soundwave's theme from Devestation in a video about Sentinel is just fucking awesome. Love your content man, keep it up EDIT; AND Megaman Zero? Bruh, you're the GOAT of informative FGC content
Sentinel is a very well done character despite its size, I actually was first exposed to MVC2 Sentinel before COTA Sentinel and I gotta say the animation differences are night and day. There’s a lot with MVC2 that felt like a bit of a downgrade, the hit sfx doesn’t feel as chunky, Ryu’s Hadouken which is a minor nitpick, Chun Li losing her Shichisei Senkukyaku (Aerial Hyper combo) and no secret characters like Shadow or Norimaru, it would’ve been fun to mess around with Cyber Akuma too, I mean they gave us 2 Wolverines I’m just saying.
39:50 which I made a head canon that when the Sentinel's were trying to apprehend Mega Man. They probably malfunctioned due to Rock also being a robot thus giving him a chance to get to the cliff from his Smash 4 reveal.
Sorry To Go Off Subject I Just Saw Screenshots of Netflix's Terminator Zero and as a card carrying Terminator fan I'm super hyped even though I saw the Terminator Salvation animated series last year that just looks like PS3 rendered cutscenes loved Moon Bloodgood In It though sexy lady
I had UMvC3, played it a lot, knew the poster in the back was an obvious Days of Future Reference, but I never really looked at who else was on it. Jin being listed as dead is fucking cold, he was my favorite character in Marvel 1 and 2.
X Men COTA deserves way more respect for those gorgeous animations and artwork. You can tell Capcom wanted to impress not only Marvel, but the whole world. And I was a child when this hit arcades, and I'll tell you, it impressed the hell out of me!
Sentinel fits mvc so well because yes it is a big hard hitting fighter but it also has a great air game so players can understand how important the air is to this series. Now I am biased because I paid attention to 3 before mvc2 but I love 3's take on sentinel. Yes it is weaker but it is still very strong, a great addition to many different teams, and it has more options for varied playstyles. I felt they did a great job keeping the character good while nerfing it and changing the previous main gameplay. Because yeah you aren't doing all those flight combos like mvc2. Instead you are going launch them in the air, air combo and knock down usually into light rocket punch and then into a super. And all 3 of their supers are really great. Not just for combos but also to tag in and out. Again sentinel just is a great character you can put in many teams
if marvel vs capcom 2 was made nowadays characters like doop (a thing who's orgin are a mystery, and he has a backup brain in his butt because the one in his head sometimes explode, yes seriously) and kamala khan would be in the roster
Sometime they are canon fodder, and sometime being actual threats, depending the stories, Sentinels are notorious in the long running history of Marvel and X-Men related video games for being inconsistent with their size when compared to the source material. However, Capcom's fighting game take on the mutant hunting robot was the most unique of them all, and ended up being pretty memorable as a result.
Sentinel is my favorite character in all whole series, his spritework and animations are a masterpiece but sadly Several of them were cut MVC2. I wish that Capcom make a new character based in him in some game for keep the Sentinel's legacy.🤖
One thing I find incredibly cruel that no one brings up is that they clearly programmed Sentinel to feel pain since when getting hit Sentinel makes robot grunts and groans in MvC3. Makes perfect sense from a game design perspective, but in universe it is just sadistic.
Assuming Sentinels are aware of the actions of other previous Sentinel models, the Tri-Sentinel I mentioned was explicitly fought by Spider-Man and the New Warriors, specifically when Nova was a member of the latter, so it's possible that knowledge of that incident is how they know of Nova.
Dude great video, you finally answered a question I've been asking since MSHvSF. Why were animation frames cut from certain characters and never put back in MvC2? Specifically Sentinel, Captain America, Shuma Gorath, and Cyclops. I know there were more but those were the most obvious. I had a feeling it was due to memory limits but now I'm glad it's confirmed, just a shame the Naomi hardware still couldn't handle it, maybe if they decided to with 2d backgrounds instead?
Yeah, I think it might've been a combo of Naomi limits and maybe not having enough dev time. The weird thing about MvC2 is that it actually _restores_ animations in some cases; Cyclops gets an animation or two reverted to how it was in XvSF for whatever reason.
I kinda feel like if that were the case, he'd have no reason to be on a wanted list to begin with, since I'd imagine mutants/humans would be the primary target. I'm pretty sure it has more to do with that specific spot in the poster being where Wolverine (who also hadn't been killed or captured) was on the original DoFP cover; Makes sense to put one of the most recognizable Capcom characters there.
X Men COTA deserves way more respect for those gorgeous animations and artwork.
You can tell Capcom wanted to impress not only Marvel, but the whole world. And I was a child when this hit arcades, and I'll tell you, it impressed the hell out of me!
Same here!
I WAS JUST THINKING YESTERDAY! "man what if he did a video on sentinal lol" and BOOM!
THANK GOD FOR SENTINEL
*THANK GOD FOR THE MACHINE*
_GIMME THEM SOUR POWERS BRANDON_
Why was it only Storm that caught the heat like that in Children of The Atom 😭😭
Timely video with the series going on. Great video with tons of information
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m ashamed to admit this but as big of a brand Marvel is I actually know more about Capcom than I do Marvel.
Do you know Breath of Fire? Power Stone? and Red Earth? Who would you pick from those games to be in a hypothetical MVC4?
@@squallleonhart9387 For Power Stone I would like Rogue and as for Breath of Fire and Red Earth they should either put Tessa or Ryu (BoF).
Of all the things, Sentinel becomes one of the most beloved(and broken) fighting characters.
So funny
if marvel vs capcom 2 was made nowadays characters like doop (a thing who's orgin are a mystery, and he has a backup brain in his butt because the one in his head sometimes explode, yes seriously) and kamala khan would be in the roster
31:47 he was also XLR8 Diamondhead and Wildvine in the Ben 10 series
Sental,s look like iron man they have a ark reactor in the chest and a ark reactor in the hands
GOAT IS BACK! LETS GOOO
44:32 Dan cannot catch a break...
Love these videos. Hoping for Storm soon!!!
Came for the lore, stayed for the E-101 battle theme.
Probably the best track in Sonic Adventure, tbh
I love sentinel, hes been my main since vanilla mvc3 along with felicia ^_^
Can't wait for the Magneto video
Same day as the last episode of xmen 97
Intentional on my part. 🙂
Well season 1 at least.
Sentinel is my favorite character in all whole series, his spritework and animations are a masterpiece but sadly Several of them were cut MVC2. I wish that Capcom make a new character based in him in some game for keep the Sentinel's legacy.🤖
Can't believe any artist ever hated this design. Absolutely tasteless.
One thing I find incredibly cruel that no one brings up is that they clearly programmed Sentinel to feel pain since when getting hit Sentinel makes robot grunts and groans in MvC3. Makes perfect sense from a game design perspective, but in universe it is just sadistic.
I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to have CotA as a kid. I had like 3 games and one was Intelligent Qube. Peace to moms on that one.
Oh man, Intelligent Qube is such a weird, rad little game.
@@TheSeventhForce low key, yes. Very low key. At the time it was very much my own personal Lee Carvallos Putting Challenge.
2:48 lmao, just like the suits to get over positively-received artistic choices. Fuck em all!
I understand Sentinel knows the X-men, but how does he know Richard Rider and the Nova Cord though? Curious
@@TheSeventhForce I see. Thanks for the info 👍
I think the Mega Man not having anything on the wanted poster is more because he's a robot rather than organic
It's crazy how much money Capcom has lying untouched if they only gave the community an updated mvc2
LET'S GO MANGO!
Sentinel has the most ominous endings in the series, doesn't it.
Ummmm you forgot Sentinel’s ending in Ultimate, the one where they measure their extermination progress by….Capcom franchises.
I completely forgot about that one, though IIRC, that's vanilla MvC3. Thanks for pointing that out!
@@TheSeventhForce It's fine, most Ult endings that differ from their OGs' only change in dialogue and MAYBE art.
...
*MAHVLE BAYBEE!!!!!*
Racism be damned that is a cool robot
I don't think anyone wants Sentinel back for the next MvC game since mook characters are frowned upon these days being for "waste of slot."
What font do you use for these videos?
I use a bunch for these, but the primary one is the BadaBoom font.
Yes a another character who’s not return in mvci😢
Iron man next please 🙏
This channel has been a GOLDMINE! Keep these up dude! your videos are super high quality
