- NBA Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid suffered an absolutely gut wrenching finger dislocation against the Oklahoma City Thunder. This was one of the few NBA injuries that has made me a bit uneasy..In this video we'll review the mechanism of Embiid's finger injury and the anatomy of these finger dislocations!

From the photographs, the dislocation appears to be a dorsoulnar dislocation of the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint ( PIP Joint). The middle phalanx of the Left ring finger is dorsally and ulnarly displaced over the proximal phalanx.

This one wasn't too bad to watch as I had a dorsal dislocation back in college. It popped back in with some effort, but a few people couldn't watch. I agree with Dr. Brian, it wasn't a major issue. I kept playing after taping it, and within 2-3 weeks it was fully healed. The only lasting issue is that the joint that dislocated is a bit bigger on that hand versus the other one.

This is a weird question, but are pinky fingers supposed to look disfigured? The top half of my right pinky has looked unusually tilted ever since I fell on top of it in high school. I didn't go to the doctor because the pain went away within an hour or two

I dislocated the middle joint (at the knuckle) of my pinky finger similarly to this a year and a half ago and the soft tissue still really swollen and it doesn't want to go down..even after months. I don't think it will heal completely :(

I've suffered injury a few years ago playing basketball with my friends while going hard for a rebound but in my case it was the right pinky and it went out laterally(like pointing to the right in a weird 90° position). When I saw it I freaked out so bad that I just put it back in place inmediatly but still was hurting like hell so I went to the hospital. X-Ray confirmed that the bone was back in its place but ligaments were obviously damaged, so they just immobilized it for a few weeks or so and gave me some meds... I've never recovered its mobility 100% though, now the range of mobility it's like 85-90%...it sucks but could've been worse.

I had this happen to the same finger but it went behind my middle finger and the bone popped out.

My question to Brian...why does the trauma on a ''knuckle'' associated with a dislocation
seem to heal quicker and easier than the knuckle swelling(thickening) of a ''mallet finger'' injury due to blunt force,usually applied on finger tips?...i have a Jiu Jitsu "mat mallet" finger, still inflamed & causing severe restriction after 2 mths rest from training (taping,anti-inflammatories etc)
x-ray and ultrasound show no breaks/fractures,and all ligaments?tendons still intact...basically the diagnosis suggests trauma based Tenosynovitis (non-infectious)with associated ''thickening of the sheath of the flexor tendon,at the palmar aspect of the PIP joint...
avoiding aggravating the condition seems my biggest enemy,given it's on my favoured hand and even sleep time provides opportunity for further aggravation..waking with it a little sore and more swollen than the previous night..desperate times call for desperate measures!..shall i just lop it off with the garden shears...or is there another way 'round this frustration?...thanks Brian

3 weeks ago I had a dislocation between my falange and methacarp. It has hurted me a lot in the next weeks so I had a radiography. Result:no damage. But the finger was hurting me a lot and it was very swollen,why everyplayers is able to come Bach after the repairament and I m not? Today it's still hurting

My middle finger got dislocate when my finger jab at the ball and look exactly like that. it looks worse than it is but I didn't feel nothing off of the hydrenaline. I physically had to see my finger to notice I dislocate it. Putting it back in place didn't hurt like that.
