  • NBA Milwaukee Bucks All-Star Khris Middleton suffered a thigh contusion and is going to be out 3-4 weeks. While sounding like just a simple bruise, these are actually serious injuries that have the potential to be season ending in some situations. This video will review his injury, the physiology of how it heals, and the risk of a condition called myositis ossificans that could end his season if it develops.

    Watching this video made me realize how crazy I was playing through injuries in high school. I suffered a pretty nasty thigh contusion my senior year. I remember my thigh swelling and bruising. I also remember being woken up in the middle of the night by muscle spasms in the thigh. I never stopped playing. Through force of will, I would stretch and massage it until I had some flexibility and strength so I could continue to play. I had symptoms of that contusion for at least a couple weeks.
    As long as I could figure out a way to run and jump on whatever injury I had, I just ignored the pain and kept playing. Now I'm nearly 38 years old and recovering from ankle surgery due to the accumulation of damage from all the poorly treated ankle sprains I had in my teens and twenties. I should have taken better care of myself. I wish I had someone that explained the importance of proper recovery and conditioning to me. Now, I'm probably going to have to live with ankle pain for the rest of my life.

    I had a horrific bleed in my quad after a guy intentionally kneed in the quad at mid court in the dying seconds of a game. It bled so much my leg was rock hard and eventually turn black as the blood came up the skin in the sides. I could work for over a month and could not exercise for 3 months as the pain of the blood moving around initially was unbearable and then the scar tissue. Rolling over bed was like knives in my leg, in fact moving at all was hell. Had very strong pain killers. The player at the time, leant over me and said ‘stop complaining that was nothing’. Wish I saw him again after that 🔨. I heard recently a bleed that extreme could result in death.

    I was wondering about nba rules and regulations. How they can be changed to better suit player health. Example. The rule that prevents players from holding on to the rim for an extended period after a dunk.
    Just dropping down has to cause damage over time.
    Are there any other rule changes you'd suggest to prevent injury?

    • @nihonbunka
      @nihonbunka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find cycling helps. If you do it too soon, or too strenuously you can re-rupture the veins but one bleeding has stopped, the repetitive but not too strenuous movements help to move the goo (see the videos where surgery is used, yuck, to get the goo out) around and help prevent perhaps ossification in the muscle. I have ossification but only adjacent to the bone.
      www.flickr.com/photos/nihonbunka/51295978149
      I also use (heated) massage to move the goo away from my knee up towards my butt where it reduces range of motion less, ideally lying on my back with my thigh pointing upwards. Standing, conversely allows the goo to go down towards you knee, and reduce range of motion, so once you can move keep moving rather than stand still.

    This muscle contusion happened when I was playing ball and it was to my calf muscle next to my shin bone. I kept playing through it but when I looked down there was a huge bubble of pooling blood in the area. I immediately began to massage the area pressing deep into it to move the blood. Because there was no ice in the gym I had to do this non stop for the rest of the time and over the next couple weeks utilized a salt stone to perform deep tissue massages in the area to ensure blood flow.

    I had this injury but worse. Its good to keep that knee bent to keep flexibility cause it goes away damn near 100% if you dont work on that flexibility. Then the rehab takes months. Also myositis ossificans is a real setback cause a year later i still have hardened tissue in my quad. Im sure its matured but it most likely have to get removed and wont go away on its own. That also made it take about a year to get back to 90%. That calcified tissue holds you back, would be 100% without it.

    Hey doc when kickboxers kick hard things with their shins to make them stronger, is it the same calcified tissue process taking place?

    • @nihonbunka
      @nihonbunka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so. The calcification would be painful. It would be like having thin chicken scull in gaps in your muscles.

    I think I have Myositis Ossifcans in my thigh. I play baseball and a few years ago I got hit in the thigh really hard with the ball, I assume I had a contusion. And the pain went away, but I noticed a while after this happened that I have small hard ball thing in my thigh, it’s not visible to the eye but you can feel it if you pass your hand over it. Should I get it checked out or am I fine. I’ve had it for over 2 years already and it doesn’t hurt at all

      @AlexCuri15 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be using the term Myositis Ossifcans wrong, but if anyone knows what it is please let me know. I asked my school athletic trainer and he said it was dead cartilage from the impact but it’s never gone away.

      Could also be a lipoma - a benign buildup of fat. I have several in each of my thighs but they can easily be removed.

    • @AlexCuri15
      @AlexCuri15 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Palmersheim I searched it up but lipoma is visible to the eye, you wouldn’t be able to tell it’s there, if you don’t pass your hand over it. It’s not really a lump it’s like a tiny ball

      Yes that is myositis ossificans. I have it in my quad after a grade 2 tear / near grade 3 rupture. Took 2 months to heal somewhat and took 6 months to get to 75% normal flexibility (considering strength, lifting loads, and doing it compared to pre injury) now im about 90% healthy in the leg a year and two months later, but there is a hardened mass there. It been there ever since the 2 month mark. Doesnt go away on its own smh. Its myositis ossificans. I just dont wanna go through getting it removed yet

    • @AlexCuri15
      @AlexCuri15 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shaquille Gaming Channel Yea man I’ve had it for like 2 years now and It just hasn’t gone away, is the only way to get it removed surgically? And hope you make that full recovery brother

    Thank you doc! I was playing basketball today had the same exact injury! Had ice on but had my leg straight after your video , I have wrapped in ice as you showed now it I feels soooo much better!!! It was a hard hit still limp but it makes some much sense as far as flexibility. I still got weeks to got for the healing process, what type of light exercises can I to help repair the muscle or stretches Thank you so much!!!!

    Is there any danger of deep vein thrombosis when compressing the knee in flexion?
    I get this a lot in karate since opponents attempt to cause it, and I am old.
    I use
    Ice spray, ice pack, compression, elevation in the short term and I will use flexion having seen this video.
    Followed by exercise that does not result in haemorrhaging, elevation and upward heated massage to attempt to get the goo to move up the thigh rather than nearer the knee where it is more inclined to to reduce range of motion.
    What about Fish oil, thinners (aspirin, onions?), heat packs, pineapple, rubs (deep heat, Zheng Gu Shui etc) and other things dietary or long term? Taping did not do much for me.
    I am lucky that my ossification has so far only occurred near to my femur X-Ray
    www.flickr.com/photos/nihonbunka/51295978149/in/photostream
    perhaps, I think, because I keep active ensuring that the goo is squeegeed out of my my muscles.
