I was really hoping he wouldn't injure his medial retinaculum
I had my fingers crossed hoping he would. Shame you had to feel that way. I thought we may of been friends. Not now though. I can't stand your face now. Go away.
When I saw this happen live, I immediately knew something went awry with his medial retinaculum
I'm always saying this
@@calebangell77me to I'm also worrying about not injuring my medial retinaculum as well
Classic medial retinaculum injury. Clear as day in the live replay
As a physical therapist, this is the first time I didn’t skip the anatomy part of the video lol

Same! Great video

I kid you not 20 minutes ago I was hoping you had already made this video and went to look for it. You are a treasure. Why so many of your videos been taken down recently?
Because YT are a bunch of idiotic pricks who allow leagues to claim/take down entire videos for using a couple seconds of footage for an educational video that’s why. ESPN talking heads can show all the highlights they want no prob but the moment doctor Brian discusses injuries he’s gotta be stopped. It’s a joke absolute travesty.
Probably because of the footage he uses. YT policy is "take down first, analysis later"
I did the same
Same, I knew my man would explain this to me! Go Dr. Brian!
Good info, thanks
I love Porzingis but we need to figure out some way to replace his legs with wheels or rocket boosters or something
MFFL here. We loved him too but his injuries sidetracked our progress big time😅
We can install drywall stilts on place of legs! CELTICS LA GLORIA!!!! Number 18 lets gooooooooo!

I followed this account way back in 2019 during my senior year of high school. I am now a PTA student and still absolutely love this channel. Thank you for connecting the lines between sports and medicine!
Brian this was an exceptional explanation. You had me flexing my foot and toes as you described the tendons of the foot and their function.
I've never previously watched Dr. Sutterer, but this was an utterly superb presentation of the anatomy and functional considerations of Porsingis' ankle injury. ABSOLUTELY top notch!
I see him more than my wife in fantasy football season.
He's always quick after any injury. I always come here immediately
Think of every major sports injury and he’s done a video on it and almost all within a couple hrs Daks ankle. The near death in Buffalo. Tua concussions. Connor broken leg etc etc
Pingus Malingus GET BACK IN THERE. Hope he's ok though. He's a really genuine and driven guy.
Yea, just like Isaiah Thomas did. FOH. Sit out Porzingas. The Celtics lost all loyalty points by not taking care of IT.
I hope Kristaps gets a call from IT and/or his agent protects HIS interests. The fans and organization don't care about the players and will love you today / hate you tomorrow.
That's fair. But come on, it's his chance for a ring..I doubt he'd want to sit out, and he's said it himself.@@phoenixrisingone1
@@phoenixrisingone1What are you even talking about. Porzingis himself said he wants to play tomorrow. Mazulla even said that they’re gonna take the decision out of his hands to make sure if he plays it’s because there isn’t much risk for the injury to get worse. IT got screwed over but yall gotta stop acting like the Celtics just don’t care about their players’ health, they’ve been super careful with everyone this season, especially Porzingis.
@@LuisARod Ok buddy. I was a NCAA scholarship basketball player and then was fortunate to play overseas after. Nobody cares. Especially the Celtics organisation. They are just saying the politically correct things to the media for fans like you. As is Porzingis.
Porzingis ain't playing. He knows better and his agent ain't gonna allow it. The Celtics lost all loyalty points "We will take care of you in the offseason" credibility with the IT situation. Yes, Danny Ainge is gone but the sentiment of Ainge still lingers with the organisation because others in the organisation could have pressured Ainge to situate IT.
Mavs in 7. Kyrie will go for 35 tomorrow and seal the deal in Boston on the Lucky logo in Game 7.

I always have to see what my man Brian says about an injury before I start to feel any type of way about a sports injury, fantastic content!
Honestly you could probably just cut em off at the knees and be fine. Still be tall enough
i saw this at work and i was hoping there would be a video when i got home. plus bonus luka content. thanks doc🙏🏾
so refreshing to get real information
2:00 i think he was just trying to avoid stepping in kyrie’s landing space because that’s a flagrant foul
Would taping or bracing be able to hold that tendon in place and be used as a temporary fix?
I've been following this channel since Doc was explaining Jumper's Knees. I swear Doc Brian is the most reliable resource to explain all these sports injuries and he is quick to upload too. Love this channel! Appreciate you, doc!
Ugh...we have a torn Medingus Retinalingus!
I’m a Celts fan but the Luka injury sounds worse than the Porzingis one. Potential of a ruptured lung, that’s scary af. Hopefully nothing bad happens to any of them. Want to win the title, but don’t want anybody dying out there, my goodness.
It’s quite scary that’s why it’s very important the medical team uses imaging guidance to make sure they don’t puncture into the pleural space and collapse a lung. Mavs fan and MD here, may the best team win!

Play basket ball or die tryin
More painful maybe, potentially more dangerous as well, but not more debilitating, in terms of movement imo.
Same for kawhi
As a family physician who does a lot of orthopedic diagnosis, this was really fascinating to see, thanks!
I had a posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, so not the same because I didn't rupture that medial retanac-thing. But still hurt for a long time. However, with a nice ankle brace thing I was able to jog and do everything just fine. I would assume he will be playing with a similar brace device.
My degree in sports and exercise just touched into this biomechanical area and it’s such a shift in how I perceive injuries and muscles/ muscle groups. Learning about this injury more in depth is really cool and hope he can get the surgery soon.
That’s crazy how he’s 7’3 and just jumped up to block a shot and landed on one foot avoiding landing on the other at all. I can’t imagine being able to do that if I were that tall.
I love Porzingis playing for my Celtics, but damn he’s fragile as shit.
Yes he is
He is but his positioning to get that rebound after FT is absurd. He should be facing forward or just back off. Not worth it to get injured.

@@ErnieBert-eg8kdbro this is insane 😂
I mean, that’s the big drawback about his height
Seeing the placement of the injury he should definitely sit out the series.
Exactly 😂
Agree 1000 percent. The ankle needs to heal and if he plays it will affect his whole body. A big mistake to play on it. Brilliant medical description but I disagree completely with his counsel. What about the risk of further damage? When one area of the body is injured you will compensate and it throws off other areas. Remember Durant’s Achilles tear? He was coming back from a previous injury and they brought him back too soon.
@@harleyrider4629 that’s exactly what I’ve been saying. It’s not worth risking him blowing his Achilles because he pushed too hard for what something that he could still get even if he sits on the bench if his team wins the next two games worth it, the Celtics will be back in the finals for years to come, so don’t risk it. Don’t risk your long-term health.
@@harleyrider4629 I mean, they won the series before without him. Why did they even risk it, especially with his history of of having leg and foot injuries because of his height

@@geomagg8158 Thank you. its like they dont understand KP in spots is better than no KP
I don't even agree with the Dr.
Kps other ligaments tendons etc will be taking on the brunt of the load compensation wise for the medial tear itself. Your asking for potential other structural damage as well something doc is not breaking down as he should.
Kd came back too soon from a similiar injury kp had and he tore his Achilles.
Thanks as always for the breakdown doc!

I was honestly waiting for this update from the doctor of TH-cam. I come here before ESPN 😂

Doc you are the man, as a Celtics fan, I had no clue what he hurt. Thank you another great video 💪🏽🙌🏽🤙🏽🫡
Love your videos, so interesting and informative. This one had me weak ngl, gross thinking about those tendons sliding around 🥴
That’s so weird that is considered a rare ankle injury I get pain in that part of my ankles all the time especially if I’m wearing basketball sneakers that low to the court.
You are a talented educator, thanks for the videos. As always, it is much appreciated.
Thank you man I think you save me from hurting the tendon to the big toe. I think I’ve been doing to much weight on my calf exercise.
Cool graphics, nice. Porzingis: Wrap that ankle very tight? Seems it could hold the tendons in place.
Up 2-0 and with Horford being effective, I’m guessing we’ve seen the last of Porzingis unless Dallas ties the series up. KP is awesome but man does that dude get hurt a ton.
He says he’s playing. Gonna have to sew that leg up. Give him Kornet’s 10-13 minutes to give Horford some rest, that’s it.
....It befuddling me why everyone's forgetting about Xavier Tillman. Stevens didn't make that trade as a haphazard throwaway.
@@garyaugustus690 It isn't befuddling. Tillman's lack of offense and poor spacing negates the Celtics' advantages. He's a solid defender of physical bigs, and would have been valuable (for example) against the Wolves. But the Mavs don't have particularly dangerous offensive bigs, they thrive on their guards dominating in isolation. So Tillman wouldn't really be much of an asset defensively, and then they could hide Luka on him because he can't shoot, and thereby it wouldn't tire Luka out (which is part of the plan). If Porzingis cannot play, Tatum will probably get some minutes at center, rather than Kornet or Tillman seeing much time.

Lol, I kept looking at #30, and I was like, I dont see it, then realized he was in the top of the screen 😅
Great stuff, thanks Doc
As a former physical therapist, I had to go and check that the retinaculum was actually was i thinking about because I had never heard of this kind of injury
I had this exact injury but on the outside of the ankle from playing soccer. I was able to move the peroneal tendon forward over the ankle bone with my hand. I had to get surgery because you risk tearing the tendon from it constantly moving forward over the bone. I couldn’t push off that foot because I could feel the tendon move forward. It was a 3 month recovery. The surgeon put a pin on the retinaculum so that it could function again holding the peroneal tendon in place.
Pain is common, and getting pain shots is just a way to manage it. But in the big picture, it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme.
long as Doncic and his health crew are careful about it, i dont see and issue with it
Pain is always caused by something ignoring it is always bad for your body
@@qdakid7776 True but pain doesnt always mean that “something” is getting worse. If the risk of aggravating the injury is low enough, then a pain reliever can be good for the patient
I had a friend who took these playing D1 football.
The tendon that connects both halves of his hips together were completely severed and he had to be medically retired from the NFL after being drafted
It isn’t worth “playing through the pain” in most cases because the team/coaches/etc don’t care about your health if they’re asking you to do this
You need your body a lot longer than a sports org does.
@@AlexP-dz7ewalotta nba players did the shot and straight up messed the rest of their career. E.g Griffins. And in condition where they have no hope for playoffs. With this setting of the final it could be worth it. However, luka is def a generational player the best choice is of course not to. But emotions is different, the whole team relies on him thats a lot of pressure
love this channel!
This man Porzingis couldnt even get through 2 games before getting injured.. Unbelievable
He’s a total liability. He missed 1/3 of the regular season. He has only played in 2/16 playoff games this year. Wouldn’t be surprised if celts front office cut him after this year
If he plays in Game 3, he's gonna re-injure himself again
If someone comes off surgery, especially at his size there is immense muscle imbalances. It’s the most likely time for him to get injured again, since he just jumped backed into it full swing with playoff basketball
Anyone else bring their foot up, trying to find the exact tendon (the medial retinaculum) when Brian talks about it, when the anatomy tool is up? hahahahah
I am a urologist, indeed, and I also studied orthopedics during medical school about 25 years ago - I did not even remember this ankle ligament. 😂

Keep up Dr! You’re great
Tingus better get on those pain injections as well. We need him
Y’all won the last series without him. What makes you think you can’t win this one without him?
It makes it a tiny bit easier for my Mavs, but y’all have a lot of talent that’ll fill in. The only thing you lose is his height.
Well, y’all didn’t need him
As soon I heard that injury I rushed to this channel. So needed
The slow motion of the injury made it look pretty bad 😳
It is rare, not just the retinaculum but the whole deltoid structure there, the fibula blocks the hipereversion of the TT pretty well. They can try tapping to avoid the subluxation of the tendon, but it usually doesn't work well
I wouldn't be continuing to play with that injury, especially if they showed me the graphics and explanation this guy provided. Realistically, is he going to be better under these conditions than the next guy down on the depth chart? I don't think so.
Agree 1000 percent
That unicorn made out of glass

This sounds like the same injury Curt Schilling had in 2004 ... just to the inside (medial retinaculum) of the ankle instead of the outside (peroneal retinaculum). KP, just sew it down & play through it... and your bloody sock will end up in the Hall of Fame!

@@grichkatayou7558 why has not one team kept him more than a couple years. He just can’t stay healthy. There is no point to miss. Paying a guy 30 mil a year to watch the season with courtside tickets is ridiculous. When you need him most he’s out
