  • Well, it's been 9 months and 18,000 miles since purchasing my 940 Turbo Volvo wagon and it's FINALLY time to do a bit of maintenance! Up to this point she's behaved nearly flawless, not bad for a 200,000 mile $2500 used car!
A little bit of back story on this car if you haven't seen it previously. This car was purchased as a "cheap reliable daily driver" off Craigslist in the early summer of 2019. I had been looking for something simple, safe, and reliable... as well as something I wouldn't be likely to modify! After the slightly "interesting" purchase experience it came back to Ohio for a quick little pre purchase.. post purchase inspection. After certifying it was indeed an old reliable Craigslist Volvo a long journey was planned which became the 25002500RoadTrip you can find on here!
So since our "Guys Field Trip" in August, Hellga the Techno Wagon has continued performing daily driver duties while also doubling as a work car. The advantages of having a wagon are MANY! Transporting larger parts and pieces, even transmissions and engines in this thing is a breeze!
However, even an old dependable Volvo requires some love and attention which as you'll see in the video she is now clearly demanding! So, time to go under the hood and check on this B230FT turbo 4 cylinder and see just exactly what we need to plan to do, and while we're in there solve this pesky misfire issue!
Lucore Automotive is a small independent automotive repair shop in central Ohio, just outside the Columbus / Dublin area. Whether it's muscle car maintenance, racecar tweaking, diesel truck repair, or literally anything in between we are THE one stop shop for mechanic work in the area.

It's hard to say how awesome this little $2500 car has been over the past almost year! We've been through a lot together and done a LOT of miles! With a lot of things due... do I repair the issues in stock form? Or do I do what I almost ALWAYS do by screwing with it and upgrading, almost everything I touch!?

Inherited moms car - 1995 1940 non turbo w/ 94K - not started in 7 years - pulled tank, cleaned tank & replaced sending unit / pump / filter / blew lines - fired right up ! Still needed plug wires (brittle) but still drove - shifted nicely too! Drove it for 2 miles that night. Nothing crazy. Then went to the car wash and cleaned it that night. I sprayed the engine bay (stayed out of the distributor area) finished up, hung up the hose and the car started up. Then car started sputtering (must have gotten a mist in the dist. cap) Car started stalling at the stop signs. It turned right back on and stayed on w/ load. Made it home. Parked it. Next day.. Turned over but no start ..replaced the wires, plugs, distributor cap, rotor and 12V coil = No spark ! Replaced the crank positioning sensor = No spark. Ordered the ignition control module (part on the way) and when and if no spark again, what is left to replace or look @ ? Distributor ? ECM ? Is this being too extreme ? Any advice on your Volvo expertise would surely be of value. Thanks, Pg

Great maintenance video on your car. How I wish you were in the Chicago area. I have a 1994 940 Volvo Turbo wagon that has under 111,000 miles. It's hard to find someone who is willing to work on older cars. And I know my car needs some maintenance. The tail pipe shake mildly and when I sit in the driver's seat, I can feel some slight rumble beneath me. I am thinking something needs to be done with the exhaust system. Keep those videos coming.

LOVED this video! Cannot wait to practice again! BTW: Got the top bolt off of the motor resister holding and here's the weird part -- prior to removing this, my dials worked on 1, 2, 3, & 4 but NOT 5. Once I removed the motor resister from the housing (haven't yet disconnected it as my old body was finished), had to run to the store -- guess what? Now 5 works! Now, as stated, haven't yet changed the motor resister but isn't that strange?
In any event, many thanks to you for all of your responses to my issues/questions. Looking forward to the next trip down Volvo Lane -- ya'll rock! Thanks!

Good to hear progress was made and you are enjoying the Volvo videos! Lots to do with this ole wagon in the near future!
That's kind of the way of wonky worn out electronics honestly, kind of the Whack it till it Works scenario. Definitely replace it while you've got it out, otherwise by the time you wrestle the old one back in who KNOWS what you may have not working ;)

@@LucoreAuto Hey there, you bet I'm going to replace it -- heck, that'd be a lot of work for nothing! BTW: I have family in Ohio -- think my cousin lives in Columbus, aunt & uncle in Crestline, another cousin in Mansfield, my brother just moved there from California (Galion?) and have a couple of other cousins there as well. One of these days, I'm going to take a leisurely drive up there in my VOLVO!
I'm thinking it might be a good idea to come by and see your shop and meet you ... honestly love your videos regarding the Volvo and you've got a great personality ... I laugh at some of things you do ... but it's a good laugh.
Anyway ... will close for now, don't want to blabber until you tire of me. Will let you know how the exchange went with the motor resister and what, after that, works and doesn't! Should be FUN. :)

@@thrisonly1 very glad to hear you are enjoying our other non Volvo content as well! We try to show off a pretty wide range of the work we do!
And old Volvo nuts are always welcome to stop by! We have another very cool Volvo project coming up this summer as well! That's top secret though ;)

When you do the timing belt and cam, do a valve clearance check and replace the quieters. I can hear them from Ga. lol...
