Do straight 8 cucumbers need to be pollinated? Mine are starting to flower (yes already) and most look like male flowers (I don't see any fruit at the base). I don't seem to be able to find any consistent information. Thank you.
Good Morning. Straight Eight is a monoecious cucumber variety, meaning that it produces male fruit on a separate flower from the female flower. The majority of traditional cucumber varieties are monoecious. Generally, the male flowers will begin appearing 2-3 weeks before the female flowers do and in greater numbers. If a gardener would like to try a variety that does not require pollination, then she would grow a parthenocarpic cucumber variety. These set fruit (but not seed) without pollination.

There are a number of companies that sell this variety. It is very likely that the seed you purchased your cucumbers from is mearly purchasing seed in bulk and reselling it. What company did you purchase your seed from?
