Straight Eight Cucumbers as they grow through the summer.

  • Straight Eight Cucumbers used to be my all time favorite cucumber. They are an heirloom variety which makes them especially attractive to me.
    Since I made this video, I've tried a few other types of cucumbers, and I have a new favorite cucumber that seems to work even better for us. It's called Marketmore 76. For us, it has been just as productive, and has never had a problem with bitter skins like Straight Eights have for us a few times.
    If you want to take a look at a video that I did on Marketmore 76, here it is: • Marketmore 76 Cucumber...

    I grow them in large pots from my second floor deck. i let them hang over the deck and grow towards the ground, that is 10 feet, when they reach the ground i snip off the ends. make sure you keep them watered well and feed often. You would not believe how many i get from one plant.

      That sounds like a pretty good system Bill. Hanging them instead of climbing them....nicely done!

      I grow a lot of my vegetables in pots. This is the first time I'm growing this type of cucumbers. I grew others in a pot and I've had good success. I never thought about doing it your way though. I stay up on the second floor so hanging it over might not be too cool, but I do need a bigger trellis though.

      I planted some on June 10th but they have been very slow going with the hot weather. So far I only have a bunch of male flowers. =)

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, extremely hot weather can slow them down some. I was running into that with some of our Armenian cucumbers, but the female flowers have finally showed up.

    Will be doing this as I hate killing the plants when stepping on them after a rain and it's hard to find the fruits lol!

      I know exactly what you mean, Matthew. I let a couple of volunteer cucumbers grow on the ground this year, and it is always hard to find them, and get to them.

    how long this cucumber plant bears for

  • @shadyfieldhomestead1974

    How much spacing are they? My straight eight are about 57 days since germination and I have cucumbers showing up already. However, my cucumbers are only about 3 feet tall or so up the cattle panel. I spaced most of them about 6 inches. There might be a few that are a little less. They’re growing but I thought they’d be higher. Also, last year I think they took forever only because they developed a disease from some bug I think. I only got a few in and then the pickle worms came. I’m prepared for them this year. Online it said they were supposed to be about 60 days from seed to harvest and it’s been 57

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For spacing, I usually shoot for about 6 or 8 inches, but I've planted them with more and with less. Mine are usually about 4 to 5 feet tall before I start getting cucumbers. I stopped growing Straight Eight and switched to Marketmore 76 cucumbers in recent years. I like them a lot better.....so far. This year, I'm growing some Marketmore 76s and some Japanese Long cucumbers.

    Do you ever fertilize them with anything? Anything for pests or diseases? This will be my first year growing these. They look good!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Laurie. I usually use some homemade compost when I first plant them. I don't usually use anything for pests unless it looks like they need it. Sometimes I do have trouble with aphids. I've used neem oil, pyrethrin, and live ladybugs for those in the past. I had really good luck with ordering live ladybugs the last time I had aphids really bad. The last couple of years, I've grown marketmore 56 cucumbers, and I think I like those even better than straight eights. Good luck with your growing season!

    Midwest Gardener when did you put the plant your seeds? I'm currently in SC and this will be my first time ever doing me a Garden.....So far I have actually seed started mine in the house to start the process. I'm not sure of when our COLD spell is going to STOP but i know its starting to warm up.
    Oh yeah still trying to get my area outside started for my fruits and vegetables also. Thank you

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Shawney. I would try to find out when your last frost date (or frost free date) is for your area. Anytime after that should be fine for planting outside. Our frost free date here is May 1st, but I can usually plant a little earlier by watching the weather. Good luck with you garden, and please drop back by and let me know how it's going.

    Will be growing these once they sprout,,,i don't have a cage will think of something or just let them grow wild on hillside

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They've always been good producers for me. I think you will like them. Growing wild on the hillside will work too. It's just a little harder to find them if the plant is big and healthy......which I'm sure it will be.

    All the ones I've picked have been bitter. I am in the KC area. At what size do you usually pick them?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We normally try to pick ours a little smaller than the ones shown in the basket. I had the same problem one year with our straight Eight Cucumbers. I switched to Marketmore 76 cucumbers the next year and we haven't had that trouble since. I would give the Marketmore 76 a try if you can find the seeds in KC. I've seen them quite a few places in our part of the state, so I'm sure you probably have them where you are too.
