Today, I'll show you how I'm pruning my Diva cucumbers, growing on my lower and lean trellis. They are all being trained to a single leader which means we must remove all the suckers. I'll show you how to identify the suckers and which sun leaves to prune to keep the plant healthy. Other cucumbers tips in their as well :)

It may seem too repetitive but I really appreciate you identifying all the anatomy over and over before pruning. It helps us beginners know what we're looking at in more than one variation of the plant. Thanks!

If the nature is always right why are you removing suckers? 😁

    • @bryannakvinda8411
      @bryannakvinda8411 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Because they waste energy to produce these suckers to lure herbivores to eat the suckers instead of fruit bearing branches to increase its chances of reproduction but if you have no deer this is very beneficial if you have deer I always recommend only pruning a foot up once the plant is over three feet tall

Thank you for such an informative video. So easy to learn from. It also reminded me how much I don't know about plants. LOL. What about topping the plant? My garden REALLY loves life. The soil here in southern Louisiana, Zone 8 is naturally rich. Plants like cucumbers or tomatoes grow thick, healthy & tall....sometimes way too tall. What is your method of controlling the overall growth of the plant. I have a similar “problem” with my lemon tree.

Hey! So i planted cucumber and I didn't do any pruning, no tying, etc. Now it's been growing for a month or two and it's wild. There has also been no cucumbers forming/growing (or dies very very soon and barely grows) and this may be due to pollination but also the flowers are completely covered and there are random and wild cucumber stems everywhere. What should I do to increase cucumber growth now? What's your opinion? Thank you!

This video was awesome! I didn’t even know about suckers and the need to remove them 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had actually watched it because I was wondering if I needed to prune the main stem on one of mine. It’s grown over the top of my trellis by about a foot now. I had hoped some of the tendrils would latch on to the other side (it’s a pyramid shape) but it just got bent downward by a heavy rain today 😭 Do I cut it off where it bent? Or is there some other way to train it back down maybe? Thanks in advance!

Are you pruning the suckers so that one plant puts all its energy into constantly producing fruit? I've never pruned any garden plants and have had monster size cucumbers & zucchini (even though we eat the zucchini flowers) But those two plants took up a lot of space! Thank you again for the video- I'm going to check out your other vids!

Hey there! I have two varieties of cucumbers growing, a pickling variety and Armenian. I’m training them this same way, however I’m noticing that the female flowers are only appearing on the suckers. Which makes me not want to prune the suckers, for obvious reasons. Do you have any idea why this would be occurring? I’m noticing it mainly on the Armenian cucumbers, but the pickling variety has very few female flowers as well. I started both from seed around April/May (had to restart several, my dog ate them down to sticks multiple times LOL). Thanks!!

Also, in your video you showed a flower/fruit that’s been successful pollinated. The flower looked closed. I thought that meant it’s not opened yet and not ready to be pollinated? 😂😂 Can you go into some more detail of the life cycle of the female flower and what it looks like/does before and after successful/not successful pollination? I would SO appreciate your help!!

This is NOT just something folks that needlessly obsess over their gardens. Tomatos with proper spacing and peppers can perform adequately without pruning but I've had the unsightly dead cucumber leaves and air blocking squash vegetation sustain bacterial and fungal colonies that trashes250 geet of valuable garden because I refused to prune and left dead and yellowing leaves lay. This is first level gardening knowlege and is as important as watering.

I haven't pruned or removed any of the suckers on my cucumbers. They are growing up the cattle panel and I believe for the most part they have grown to about 5 and half feet tall. One might be about 6 feet up the panel the smallest one about 3 feet. Anyway, I have a ton of flowers mostly male but a lot of female/fruit flowers and I'm wondering if it's too late to prune and remove suckers? It is kind overgrown I want to get mass production out of my plants. What should I do? Also, since I haven't removed any suckers, will it be difficult at this point to identify them and remove them? Thanks, any bit of information and advice will help.

So after finally figuring out which flowers were male and which are female I removed as many males a I could yesterday. I watched your video today and was excited to be able to go out and remove the suckers but with all of those flowers gone I can't figure out where the suckers are. Help please. Newbie to the garden 😢 0:12

Help! I’m growing lemon cucumber but the leaves don’t look very healthy. Could it be too much water? How much and how often do you water each plant?

Should I remove a large sucker that grew about 2-3ft long or leave it? I noticed when one cucumber grew while the other stayed small on the sucker vine. It's located at the bottom of plant. I'm a new gardner.

I wish i had seen this video earlier, may be it would have helped my cucumber plant. My plant is producing amazing cucumbers but the cucumbers are bitter. Could you give me a tip what would cause this?

Mine are not this pronounced and yet they are not young. I did not cut any of my suckers off and so far am getting cucumbers but the fruit is smaller and under-developed. You want me to cut off all the suckers on all my plants? Then how do you continue to get fruit? This is my first year of having adult cucumbers as last year my plants were eaten alive by cucumber beetles. I have seen a few beetles this year but it has only been about 5 if that and some of them are on my zucchini plants. I did not get cucumbers last year so learning this has been an experience. I do not have a cucumber bulb like you do on your plants - it’s more like just a blossom, tentacle and sunflower. The problem I have is trying to differentiate between the sunflower and the sucker - they both look the same. I will simply keep trying as like I said this is my first year getting my plants to grow.

Question ~~I know that sucker plants on tomatoes can be planted separately from the parent plant and grow into their own maturity fairly quickly. Can the same be done with a cucumber?

I have a patch of Armenian cucumbers, which I know are really not a true cucumber and a melon, but they do look like they are similar in growing pattern and leaf shapes. Should I prune them the same way?

Hi.. I am beginner gardener. I have planted cucumber plant which is 2 feet tall and has already started flowering. Shall I keep those flowers or prune it. Is it normal to have flower so early, when the plant in not fully grown ?

HI, I have a cucumber plant and the baby cucumbers have black spots on it where there are normally bumps. Do you know if that is normal and the black spots will go away as it matures or does it sound diseased?

when do you stop pruning, Im assuming your're in the NY /NJ area? Or when at what time in ourc area do you allow cucumbers and tomatoes to flower fully in July or earlier?

Why do you need to remove the suckers? I know in tomatoes they don’t produce. But you said they can produce fruit. What is the disadvantage of letting them grow?

What kind of cucumbers did you plant? Also, I noticed that you have spearmint mixed in with the cucumbers. What benefits does spearmint have for the cucumbers? Thank you so much for your videos as they are very helpful. Very much appreciated.

Pruning has never increased my yield if my plants stay healthy that being said pruning like this is to keep plants healthy by increasing air flow to lower humidity and decreasing soil splatter on leaves to decrease bacterial viral and fungus infection it also allows to spot spray pest like cucumber beetles that spread viruses and bacteria

Question, what is the best way to start your cucumbers From a small ceiling? I’m growing them in the dirt but the leaves seem to be touching the ground way too much and I’m afraid they’re going to get disease. And there are no vines yet so that I can train it to go up a trellis. Any advice?
