This song reflects the “spirit of Springsteen” in its truest form. You can visualize a young man sitting on the edge of his single bed with a guitar. The window is open, and it’s in the middle of the night in Freehold. The screen less window is open, and a slight breeze rustles the curtains, a storm is approaching. As his fingers find the chords, he pauses from time to time to write the lyrics in well-worn a spiral notebook. Shirtless he looks at the ceiling waiting for the magic his dreams bring

Working late to avoid going home to a failing marriage.
    Decide to listen some music.
"In the end it was something more I guess
That tore us apart and made us weep"
    Hits like a goddamn train.

Just look at his face when performing this masterpiece...this man's glorious music got under my skin and hooked me way back in 1982 my last year at school in Edinburgh, Scotland. Today, some 30 years later I am still as speechless at this man's talent as I ever was. His music has been the soundtrack of my life, and touched me like no others has.

This song along with "Something in the Night" from Darkness are the two best songs he ever wrote that explore the unbelievable pain that human beings can endure in pursuit of love and happiness. I am 48 yo now and I swear both these songs still translate today to loves lost now as they did when I was 16 and thought Id surely not survive whatever latest heartbreak I was confronting. I agree though, the album version of this can never be matched, maybe the most haunting song he ever recorded.

Another example of ying/yang. Because Bruce may have had some personal experiences of pain and lessons it is the reason he is able to put together such soulful songs that touch us personally. He was given that gift of drawing upon personal experiences and creating masterpiece after masterpiece. The amazing thing is that he is able to expand on those emotions during his live performances. Brings u right into the experience and leave you emotional moved. A lot of people are not on that same plane but there a lot of us that are.....for me it works and I cant get enough of it. A true artist of his time. Thanks Bruce. You are truly "The Boss"

Couldn't of said it any better. I always feel sorry for the people who don't get to hear a song like this just because they think Bruce is just that guy who did Born in the USA. I usually make them listen to Nebraska or The River to try and show them the poetic range that Bruce has.

A song as deep and simple as this does not need multiple chords to enhance it...it would take away from the beauty and meaning. Bruce's lyrics, feeling and his live performances make him what he is. He plays well enough to be in RS top 100) rarely witnessed in shows as he has Nils and Stevie to do the "work" as he crowd surfs, goes into the audience, etc...burns an estimated 2,000 calories in 3.5 hr...I could care less how many chords he plays. Bruce Springsteen isn't a noun...it is a VERB.

I had a beer few minutes ago after a long hard working week. I put a piece of wood on my fire place while I was looking for a moment full of meaning and joy in Boss songs here in my sittin room. I met your message. All the best Novacoma. Cris

He only played this a handful of times on the BIUSA tour; I believe this is the only performance of the tune from 1985 as well. It’s played in 84 in the Oakland Coliseum and Tempe as well. So, this was a sweet surprise all those nights ago 🎸🎷

Yep. This song is a constant reminder to me hofsar i have to go as a songwriter. The day i can take two chords and write such a powerful song i'll know i've made it. Probably never will happen of course. here he's playing them arpeggioed though,on the record its just strummed.

This song. I love it ... the passion, the pain, the pure honesty. I hate it ... forces reality upon you and makes you face your mistakes.
The mistakes of you make can haunt you forever.

yes. I never say "YES" to any other musician, just through theirmusic and words as much as I do with Springsteen. The pain, the glory, sadness, the happiness. I only wish I could express myself as well.

You know what's funny? I really kind of like some of his stuff, but it was just kind of on the outside of what I was getting into all through the early seventies and right into the 80s. But when I dig deep, this guy really really has some Talent. It might not be that he sings like Roger Daltery or something. Please guitar like Richie Blackmore . - But there's some Talent here and I think you know what I'm getting at. The guy just has a feel and a vibe. He comes from a place where a lot of us have never wanted to be, and wish we could get out of, and we listen and maybe this kind of a song helps you deal with it.
My Hometown comes on my Bluetooth sometimes at work, and I get a little tear going. I have to stop work and just I fade back into the days of being a seven-year-old and a 12-year-old right up through teenager in my hometown where I ran the streets and ruled the neighborhood with my friends. But, like everything else we get older and we leave and the old places just fall apart and people are leaving by the thousands
