My mom and sisters grew up with Bruce, and worked at Federici’s. Met him a few times there, cause he never forgot where he came from. After all the success, he still came back and remembered all their names.
Bruce is great, but he definitely forgot where he came from. He wrote songs, and powerful ones, about articulating the working man's plight. Well now he is a shill for the Democrats, which unlike 30 years ago, is now the party of the rich, educated and elite. Pretty Ironic????????>
This album is part of my life. It was my favourite album when my mother died, so it mingles in my mind. This and Bobby Jean are my favourites. I'll die loving these songs.
I (foolishly) thought that I had a grip on how astounding Bruce's songwriting really was.... Then I stumbled upon this jewel... The man is one of the greatest...
I used to listen to that album driving 30 minutes to work ... day and night shifts different times. So many great songs but this was often my favorite. Never heard a live version until tonight. It was so haunting then because I only had a few tapes and CD's in that truck. And I heard this on many night drives.
When i was a senior in high school, he revived a lot of buzz to a newer audience with the release of the live 75-85 box sets. It was 1999, we would cut class at the end of senior year and listen to this music in the sun. At the beach or a buddy's backyard I could cry at the joy this music has brought me over the years Jersey shore...a beautiful place to grow up
Last night I heard your voice You were crying, crying, you were so alone You said your love had never died You were waiting for me at home Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods I ran till I thought my chest would explode There in the clearing, beyond the highway In the moonlight, our wedding house shone I rushed through the yard, I burst through the front door My head pounding hard, up the stairs I climbed
@Joseph Merkling He works 3 jobs in this song. First he works for the lumber yard, but he gets laid off. He starts working at the Car Wash and his wife leaves him, presumably due to his depression. He then has his hallucination/dream episode where he thinks she wants him back, only to hear that lonely whistle again like when she left the first time. By the end of the song he's working a menial labor job at the Railroad (a call back to the whistle heard when his wife left). He's working there because his depression is now such that he can't even hold the Car Wash job. He feels like his life is a "downbound train", as in, a downward spiral of depression that has caused him to lose everything. In the greater theme of the Born in the USA album this song illustrates the disillusionment with the "American Dream" for the average citizen.
polygon the railroad job is better paying than car wash, probably not a clear cut gig like the lumberyard. You have no idea what you are talking about, you are stupid
"Now I swing a sledgehammer on a railroad gang, knocking down them cross-ties working in the rain." Damn what a good story of the hardworking lonely man whose wife left him by seconds.
@niljuanzo I have seen Bruce 27 times... first time 1978! I love the old stuff but all bruce is great.... I beat you by about 20 yrs on the biggest fan thing LOL.... he is the greatest story teller of all time and musically he is a Genious, keep listening.... it's timeless and he keeps coming back with more... Long live the BOSS!!!!!!
i am a lifelong bruce springsteen fan,and fellow bruce fans i am certain you will agree,we are running out of words to describe his brilliance.what can we say?excellent?brilliant?exceptional?world class?magnificent?is there a word in english that can do him justice?i dont think so.can somebody cleverer than me put there label on him?
There is no word. I wonder if he knows how unique and special he is and thanks God every night . So much talent, so much empathy, so much sex appeal, effortlessly wonderful voice, lyrics that make you want to cry or die..My father said he spoke for the common man. I think he makes you fall in love. Just call him what he is. He is The Boss xx😎🌹
i wish i could have been there to see him in the 80's.....i mean iv been going to his concerts like 3 or 4 times a year since the reunion tour in 1999.....im 19 years old and i am the biggest bruce fan u will ever meet.

its a song about losing a person you love,i think that has or will happen to us all at some point in our lifes, hope it will never happen to all the people here, god bless
Saw him around this time in Frankfurt (memorable gig and I was only 9)!! Been to see bruce a few times since, next time I heard this live was at the Emirates this year (not quite Frankfurt, but still top class). Best songwriter in the history of songwriting!!!!!!!
Never, ever, liked Springsteen till I saw the Glasto gig, never rated him,,hes a grafter, loved his live performance, his dudes rock, amazing, hardworking set...fair play to em...converted....rawness is cool!! Get in Bruce!!!!! Nice work!
I agree. Very underrated song. I appreciate the last verse offers no redemption for "Joe". It goes from bad to worse and the character ends up breaking the law and working on a chain gang. That's how i see hear it anyway
The young voice of Springsteen... I have a dream, I will pick up my Tele to his concert and I will play the first chords of this song, then I will call: 'come on band!!' and Rock 'n Roll...
@jixxxxer17 in your dreams!! 82 was the year nebraska was released, and it s the one album he did not tour with. Born in the usa was released 1984 and the mammoth world tour ran thru 1985. 26 years on from that he is still the truest and sexiest live rock and roller out there. age does not come into it.
Born in the USA is one of the greatest albums of all time.
Amen
A timeless song. Just as powerful today as when it was first written.
And still timeless.
A timeless comment. Just as relevant to the subject matter today as it was 9 years ago.
@@johnjjohningtoniii2439 A timeless reply. Just as relevant as it was 8 months ago.

It just burries itself right into your very core of being in such a big poignant way

Without a doubt one of his best songs, probably even cooler because it's kinda unknown to the big public.
Words fail me trying to describe how good this song is. Thats the power of music for ya

He was only called the Boss because he was the Guy who handed out the checks.
This is my favorite song of Bruce Springsteen's! Someday I hope to meet him so I can tell him for myself. :)
I (foolishly) thought that I had a grip on how astounding Bruce's songwriting really was.... Then I stumbled upon this jewel... The man is one of the greatest...
Best song Bruce has done it's of the scale 4 me

Yes I agree one of my favorite boss songs that doesn't get the credit

I'm sad 2 say I think it's the best thing he has done with out a doubt
Bruce says ' a song should remind you of something ' Memories flood back with this beauty.
Especially when he says" there in a clear at 2.05.
One of my favorite Bruce songs.
A song so surreal....it bites hard into ones soul.... Leaving lasting memories

ANOTHER TIMELESS MASTERPIECE OF THE MANY THAT THE BOSS HAS
💚💚💚 Flawless
My fave song of his - such a sad poignancy - every lyric a masterpiece of storytelling. Resonates.
Love this song. Haunting and a real tearjerker. The imagery is evocative.
One of the many "unknown" well-written tunes overlooked by casual fans of the Boss.
Definitely not overlooked
and he still goes strong now at 67. role model rocker!
You too still beautyful
this song kicks my ass every time..love it..makes me miss seeing him live
Absolute masterpiece of melancholic and genuinely heartfelt songwriting. What an incredible artist is The Boss!

Man I miss my high school years. The memories with this song
I love this song. I've loved it since I heard it as a kid in the '80s.
This and “I’m goin down” are the 2 best songs on that epic album imo I always have to listen to them a few times in a row
❤️Beautiful song! Touching lyrics! Fantastic performance!Thank you!❤️
He did this song during the reunion tour in 2000 in Austin, TX, and it was AMAZING! A fantastic show by a truly phenomenal band!
Now i work down at the car wash where all it ever does is rain, awesome lyrics this is one of his best.
Best song By the Boss right here!
What a great track, and thanks for posting the authentic live version! 👍🏼
This has been my first Bruce show.

sometimes it feels like a downbound train, i dont ready like to hear, but its true some times
polygon We'll stated. I am glad artists that can write music like this can be in touch with everyday working people.
polygon the railroad job is better paying than car wash, probably not a clear cut gig like the lumberyard. You have no idea what you are talking about, you are stupid
He's working the railroad gang because he was imprisoned for breaking into the house he had previously shared with the woman who left him.
