Hello👋 super fans,I am glad my music was able to win your soul my wonderful fan❤️❤️❣️I appreciate you for being a great fans of mine❤️🎼🎼You mean alot to me my Amazing fan🎼🎼❤️Kisses😘.
This song has been playing in the back of my mind for a very long time. Most of the time I don’t hear it, but when I do it really sticks out. But I’ve never really paid attention. Now that I have, I realize that it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Bruce, you are a poet!
I grew up in the 60’s. So in the 80’s was spoilt with original artists where songs had real meaning. Bruce Springsteen is amazing and the older I am the more I can appreciate him as a great singer/songwriter.
Him, Seger, Mellancamp and Knopfler all speak to me louder the older I get... they all write and sing about real life... none of this baby-baby-baby crap of the younger generation........true lyrics that speak to the soul.
I was saying how he sings with passion. Yep, from the heart. He’s a legendary artist. Along with Roy Orbison, Prince, Tina so many. That we live at time to hear these great songs is awesome.
The songs from this album dealt with genuine heartbreak that Springsteen was going through. As I result I find the songs here particularly deep and meaningful. This one is my favorite.
Bruce is the epitome of greatness. True songwriting is all about giving the world something to think about in addition to entertainment. His songs remain forever ingrained in my psyche.
All of his songs from this era/chapter of his life have exponential meaning and depth. Truly an introspective time in the life of The Boss- searching for reasons, and an understanding of answers given to questions that he himself didn't realize he asked
kudakwashe chipunza To be honest I never heard it. I'll have to check it out. Actually, I was never a huge Springsteen fan. I liked some of his songs on a selective basis and admired him for his success but I can probably count on one hand the number of his songs that I truly like.
When I was just a dumb young kid, I thought this was the most boring video. I just watched it again for the first time in years. Isn't it amazing how putting some years onto a perspective can totally change it? Amazing video, gut wrenching performance by The Boss...I see it now!
Great post! I totally agree. In my teens I used to rip my sister's boyfriend for being into Bruce. Boring x10. 10 years later this was the sound track to the end of a 6 year relationship. Bruce's voice reeks of regret. I felt it x10.
Exactly. As a much younger person I thought a video should be more exciting than this. (Same with Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares to You, similar premise.). Now as a 50 year old, I watch this, and am blown away by the emotion in his singing as well as his face. Brilliant (no pun intended.)
The studio recording of the music was used in this video, but Bruce Springsteen is singing the vocal live in a hidden mic. This masterpiece gives me chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
By using this technique it adds a lot to music video, giving it more emotional intensity and makes the personal themes of the song much clearer, something which conventional lip syncing would not be able to achieve.
One of the most genuine artists in the history of American rock period. This coming from one who isn't a great fan of his, but giving credit where credit is due.
I hear you, man! At a young age I felt Bruce to be pretentious - a working class hero, but somehow pretentious. Over the years, damn, those lyrics somehow started speaking to me...I realized he was a genius at writing from the heart.
@@warrenny I think for me, his lyrics were too mature being that I was ten when he wrote tunnel of love. I got mature, and I not only get it, but his music sounds better to me now.
Well boss this one goes way back, to what the early 90s it doesn't matter to me, what you sing love everything old or new Love you guys, Happy Father's Day 🎶🎵 from Texas 🤠😁🙏💕❤️
Without a doubt this song is in my top 5 favorite Boss songs of all time. on top of that, i think this is one of the greatest music videos ever made. One long take, and Bruce is actually singing instead of lip syncing. pure magic from beginning to end.
Springsteen is one of my favorite singers of all time that influences me, along with Thom Yorke, Tom Waits, Michael Stipe, Eddie Vedder, Bono, Sting and Peter Gabriel
I happened to hear a Tom Waits cover today by Micheal Garlington "Hard Rain Coming Down on Me". It also ends with very similar lyrics to this song. "She's gone for good you should know by now. She ain't comin' back anyhow. Any love to her is a love that's thrown away. And it's over".

I love that he is singing this live, and he is not lip syncing. And the video was shot in one take. This album came out when I was in the 9th grade. It is still as amazing as it was when I first heard it back in 1987!!
Rubbish!! I'm a huge Bruce fan, but this is lip sync'd like pretty much every other video. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's a great song and a great video. No need to make shit up.
@@owenrees7544 Bruce's vocal in this video was, in fact, recorded live on set. Compare it to the 'Tunnel of Love' album version and you'll hear that this is a completely new take - much rawer, with less reverb and no harmonies overdubbed. Bruce also sang live while walking the 'Streets of Philadelphia' in that song's video. It's true that the vast majority of videos feature lip-synced performances, but 'Brilliant Disguise' is an exception.
I am saying that lyrics should be in every country school books as an example of perfect explanation of dead love, passion and lost but not forgotten fire between man and woman. God have mercy on those, who ommited to do this...
When you look close and realize how an ordinary video becomes so EXTRAORDINARY and you just feel that the video did justice to a masterpiece!! Love you boss
In my opinion this has to be the greatest video of all time! Just a man and his guitar, and heart on his sleeve... His emotions and body language match how I feel inside when I listen to this song... Bruce has a way to pull you in with pure honesty... Outstanding lyricist.
This song allowed me to take a real good look at my life and my relationships. It helped me to change myself and save my relationships with the most important people who love and care for me.
+Soledad Ferrer That's exactly what he says. It's such a powerful line. "God have mercy on the man who doubt's what he's sure of." He wrote that song while he was going through his divorce. During that time, he questioned his love and his faith, things in his life he'd never thought he'd question. Doubts of any kind ruin us. It's when we question how secure the path we walk is, that's when we tend to stumble and fall.
With great singer/songwriters/frontmen who write their own songs to stand up in front of big audiences and sing them with their own band backing them they have a rare and powerful position. As young men they write songs about the life they know, as types get old we get masterpiece like this. The one thing about Jon Bon Jovi is that he never went through a bitter divorce and write songs about that, he got stuck around Slipper When Wet and New Jersey. With The Boss, after Born In The USA, we get the older, darker stuff, and this is by far the most magnificent. Few men in the world can make songs like this.
This song has been one of my favourite songs for a long time (since 1990s) The beauty of the song and the charm of Bruce Spr. haven't changed a bit for me ! ❤
Stunning...is all I can say. I'm not a huge Bruce fan, but this video is so genius (one camera), so genuine (live voice), so wrenching - I'd swear his eyes are tearing up when he sings "You play the loving woman, I play the faithful man..." I'm tearing up with him...
I've been listening to this on repeat the last few days. I guess in memory of my failed marriage. I wrote about it on my blog yesterday. These lyrics kill me every time.

What are those words whispered baby
Just as you turn away
I saw you last night
Out on the edge of town
I wanna read your mind
To know just what I've got in this new thing I've found
So tell me what I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
I heard somebody call your name
From underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame
Underneath your pillow
Well I've tried so hard baby
But I just can't see
What a woman like you
Is doing with me
So tell me who I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Now look at me baby
Struggling to do everything right
And then it all falls apart
When out go the lights
I'm just a lonely pilgrim
I walk this world in wealth
I want to know if it's you I don't trust
'Cause I damn sure don't trust myself
Now you play the loving woman
I'll play the faithful man
But just don't look too close
Into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter
The gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours
Well maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me
You better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Tonight our bed is cold
I'm lost in the darkness of our love
God have mercy on the man
Who doubts what he's sure of

Sheesh... he's not singing live
“So tell me what I see, when I look in your eyes...is that you baby, or just a Brilliant Disguise?...” Great song...Love this song...💯❤️🙌🏼
Hello👋 super fans,I am glad my music was able to win your soul my wonderful fan❤️❤️❣️I appreciate you for being a great fans of mine❤️🎼🎼You mean alot to me my Amazing fan🎼🎼❤️Kisses😘.
@@brucespringsteen2497 is that you or just a brilliant disguise 😊
This is my fav Springsteen track...those riffs...and the change of scale ... brilliant disguise indeed...
His emotions are on full display here. What a man he is 💕
2024 ❤
This song has been playing in the back of my mind for a very long time. Most of the time I don’t hear it, but when I do it really sticks out. But I’ve never really paid attention. Now that I have, I realize that it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Bruce, you are a poet!
This song is fucking poetry. The twists are incredible.
And now we've got what? Drake?
@@CARVALHOALBORNOZ yeah he is one of the “best “ ones too. Doesn’t say anything good for the rest of todays music
Nebraska!!❤🇨🇭
Oh those intense eyes full of emotion coupled with the masterpiece of a song.......really the boss.......
Well said
Way back in 1974, I was able to see this beautiful man sing, and I was hooked!
Many times, Springsteen is just telling a story, this is autobiographical, he lived this one.
That Lake Oswego Beauty Queen kicked his a**.
He cheated
He was singing from the heart. Great lyrics.
I thought he had just got married to Julieanne?
Yes, this one is amazing, as are the title track and "One Step Up." All of them seemingly dealing with relationships that are unravelling.
Perhaps we all wear "masks" at one time or another, even if we don't wish to. " Is that me baby, or just a brilliant disguise"?
@@a.leemorrisjr.9255 Hmm yesss An Alfred Hichcock in the making
So true
This man could sing the phone book and it'd be a masterpiece ♥️🖤
Bruce is the epitome of greatness. True songwriting is all about giving the world something to think about in addition to entertainment. His songs remain forever ingrained in my psyche.
A true poet.
Amen brother....
All of his songs from this era/chapter of his life have exponential meaning and depth. Truly an introspective time in the life of The Boss- searching for reasons, and an understanding of answers given to questions that he himself didn't realize he asked
Johnny Ev master story teller
fantastic :-)
This has to be his best, or certainly one of his best. It's definitely in the top 3.
It ranked #20 out of the 314 songs he released.
Mike L It's #1 to me.
kudakwashe chipunza To be honest I never heard it. I'll have to check it out. Actually, I was never a huge Springsteen fan. I liked some of his songs on a selective basis and admired him for his success but I can probably count on one hand the number of his songs that I truly like.
to me Thougher than the Rest in #1. with no doubt
MissVariabile I have to check that out. :-)
When I was just a dumb young kid, I thought this was the most boring video. I just watched it again for the first time in years. Isn't it amazing how putting some years onto a perspective can totally change it? Amazing video, gut wrenching performance by The Boss...I see it now!
😊
+just kjb The song is great though, even if the video is not creative. I can listen to it again and again.
JustKJB , funny. When this song first came out, I thought it was stupid. Now I love it!
The studio recording of the music was used in this video, but Bruce Springsteen is singing the vocal live in a hidden mic. This masterpiece gives me chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
He did the same thing on Streets of Philadelphia to great effect, singing into a hidden mic as he's walking through the streets of the city.
By using this technique it adds a lot to music video, giving it more emotional intensity and makes the personal themes of the song much clearer, something which conventional lip syncing would not be able to achieve.
A genius
One of the most genuine artists in the history of American rock period.
This coming from one who isn't a great fan of his, but giving credit where credit is due.
You don’t know shit if you think he is genuine
@@InstantKaarma Why?Because his opinions differ from yours?
@@InstantKaarma what an odd comment
I hear you, man! At a young age I felt Bruce to be pretentious - a working class hero, but somehow pretentious. Over the years, damn, those lyrics somehow started speaking to me...I realized he was a genius at writing from the heart.
@@warrenny I think for me, his lyrics were too mature being that I was ten when he wrote tunnel of love. I got mature, and I not only get it, but his music sounds better to me now.
God have mercy on a man who doubts what he’s sure of…simply soul crushing
It is Amazing how a song can have a so powerful narrative about life in such a way that resumes a very emotional tragic path!
This is one of them rare tunes that sends chills down the spine each and every time I put it on...brilliant.
Agreed!
Yes, every time...
One of his best and most underrated lyrical efforts, imo...great song!! 👍🏽👍🏼🎸🎶🎵🎵
He's got a lot of amazing newer songs. Brilliant all around for so many decades. A true american treasure.
Seriously, my mind is blown.
THE BEST AT HIS BEST!
Bruce, THE BOSS!!!
I love you with all my heart and soul, brilliant song! ❤ Thank you!!!
Springsteen is one of my favorite singers of all time that influences me, along with Thom Yorke, Tom Waits, Michael Stipe, Eddie Vedder, Bono, Sting and Peter Gabriel
Ha... that's pretty much my top list right there!
@@DaveHaynie id also add Bryan Ferry and Morrissey
Agreed… Eddie vedder is a GENIUS .. Pearl ham are excellent
You have insane taste
This is a "live" vocal set to the music of the studio. It's part of what makes this video so powerful.
True
Magic from basically a chair, a table and a guitar. Incredible
One of my favorites from Bruce!!
This was my wedding song. My husband passed to years ago. I listen and cry. Back to happy more happy times. ❤😊
❤❤❤
@@pajero0402 Thanks so much for liking my comment. My son and I absolutely love him. Problem now I cry listening. No handsome husband to dance and sing with. Miss him so much. ❤❤❤
This is not really a good choice for a wedding song at all😅. Read the lyrics, and you will understand why.
I can see the desire to have a Springsteen song but not even close to a wedding song. I’m sorry.
One of Bruce's most brilliant tracks, awesome.
God, how I love this song.
me too. memories of another time, far away in the UK as a grad student. listening to this album was a touch of a home I missed....yet I miss my UK home too . sigh..
Me too !! Have to hear it often !! Cathartic anthem for me !!
ana nunes He's awesome!!
God,song I love this. Song
Me toooo always a Bruce Springsteen fan and his band still together
Do I see in this man, my hero, tears in his eyes in the end of this remarkable song?
Man, I got the privilege of living through the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan and Springsteen. What a blessed life.
You and me both, 60's, 70's and early 80's was some epic music.
Amen.
Now what?
The part from 2:00 “now look at me baby, struggling to do everything right!” Damn relatable...gets me every time
I love that he is singing this live, and he is not lip syncing.
Saw him on the Tunnel of Love tour in Sheffield, England.
I remember this like it was yesterday
Me too
I was there , still have ticket stub ! SUPERB CONCERT.
Me to ❤
When you look close and realize how an ordinary video becomes so EXTRAORDINARY and you just feel that the video did justice to a masterpiece!! Love you boss
In my opinion this has to be the greatest video of all time! Just a man and his guitar, and heart on his sleeve... His emotions and body language match how I feel inside when I listen to this song... Bruce has a way to pull you in with pure honesty... Outstanding lyricist.
Giovanni Adrian truly... THE BOSS..
to me, a real cruiser
When there is no distinction to be made between the artist and the art, that is true art, or true humanity, or just TRUE
You are right....
Just your opinion.
You just have to look at his face to feel all the emotions
And the moon
This song allowed me to take a real good look at my life and my relationships. It helped me to change myself and save my relationships with the most important people who love and care for me.
I don't think this was just a performance for him. He wrote this because of life experience, and he wanted to share it with his fans. Well done.
He was mostly writing of his life experiences
The best "Marriage In Trouble" song on the planet.
"God have mercy on the man. That doubt's what he sure of?" A line that has always haunted me.
An amazing line.
It's when we question how secure the path we walk is, that's when we tend to stumble and fall.
ldylkr Very well said!!!
And it haunts me also like a curse, tell me Joe is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse?????

You can see, hear and feel the pain in this song. It’s always brought tears to my eyes.😢
Brilliant Bruce. The vocals are 100% live for this promo video. Brilliant Disguise is his Diamond amongst his many many gems. 👏🙏
