I was lucky enough to see him 4 times at the Met - Otello, Boheme, Traviata and Rosenkavalier. The Met musicians adored him. THE master!

Unsurpassed. His complete control of all elements of the score, gestures to prepare them, and a physical technique that simply has never been seen, all of this is what made Kleiber Kleiber.

Every gesture is so clear yet so musical. And the musicality and sensitivity with which the group responds is incredible. Just brilliant all the way around. I hope everyone lucky enough to attend in person knew how special that was.

Yeah! Oh! my God Conducting, beautiful, wonderful, splendid and so much graceful through to the end, I would feel his left arm is God's Arm. By the way, I hear "Beethoven said Tempo is Music". especially he is veryvery good at changing tempo which is concerned with connection between various rhythm. Any way I was moved so much. and more orchestra played beautiful, energetic and graceful.(91yrs.Japanese) sorry strange English.

Quanta accademia !

A great conductor, to be sure, and the discussion of where he "ranks" belittles that greatness. It must be said, though, that his greatness is revealed in a very small part of the repertory and that all of us are disappointed that for whatever reasons he was able to bring himself to conduct, say, only the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th symphonies of Beethoven and only the 2nd and 4th of Brahms and, say, only 5 or 6 operas. I doubt that had he come along earlier in the century, his career would have survived, so let's be grateful that he came when he did and gave us the enormous little he was able to. How this "ranks" vs Szell's or Abbado's omnicompetence and a great deal more in a much larger repertory is not for any of us to say as musicians are not thoroughbread horses and we are not handicappers. . 2:45

Up in the conductor's room in Heaven, Lenny was heard, boldly declaring that
" God said I AM His favourite conductor!!"
Shortly after a quite grumble was heard from HvK ".... I did not."
But in my view, HvK has more than proved that he has presented the most imaginative and highly polished performances of great music in the history of our current civilization. So many great conductors. Only one can fit at the top and that's HvK.
And just so you know... BRRRRRRZZZ! There goes the buzzer, no further discussion will be admissible on this topic.
    I have spoken.

What a nonsense. Neither of them would have raised a question like that. They admired each other as their letters show. When the Berlin Philharmonic tried to play them against each other for the New Year's concert 1988, they failed. Kleiber wrote to Karajan: I have no ambition as a conductor. I prefer to listen to you ... I am one of those few people of really knowing what endless miracles of conducting you have achieved. I remain your unworthy pupil and if I may, your friend.
In their exchange they called each other Kapellmeister (bandleader) an ancient German title emphasising the craft and not the art.
