As a percussionist, I always love playing cymbals with a Russian composer's music. I'm old now, so I don't know if I could pull off Tchaikovsky'ys 4th, but I think I could do this one :)
@@roberts932 obviously. Just pointing out that the double bass has a striking resemblance to Gorbachev. Besides, he was alive when this concert was recorded.
eeerrrrr . . what am i to say . . Allegro non troppo does mean NOT TOO FAST. is this yet another case of a conductor ignoring the composer's own directions for the sake of cheap thrills??
This whole symphony is brilliant! I have played piano & celesta a couple of times, for example in Helsinki Philharmonic under beloved James de Preist.
one of the top ten endings in all of classical music
This part is my best love of Shostakovich's. Nothing compares this part in how percussion is leading the music.
Try to listen to the percussion in the end of his 7th symphony. Its like no other
Amazing. I think everyone who was at that concert will remember it for the rest of their lives.
I know, right?! I saw Solti conduct Shosti 5 w the CSO around this same time. Unforgettable
Exciting, masterful conducting!!

BERLIN is one of the greatest halls! I was there last year! Stunning!
This is absolutely spectacular. God Bless those kids having a riot!
This music made me very happy.
Stunning!
I know, right?! I have also posted all four movements of this performance, if you would like to enjoy the rest.
The greatest of his great work
Bravissimo Sir Georg! Capisce la musica, rarissimo fra I direttori d'oggi!
I wonder why this isn't on the Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall?
For me the best part of the 4th mov (that part is phenomenal): 2:11 - 3:25
BREAKNECK TEMPO!! FABULOUS CONTRAST THROUGHOUT!!
Stunning
0:11 one of audience covers his ears 😂
1:39 Der Kleine hinter dem Pauker hat Spaß! 😂
Is this from Japanese TV program? I didn't know Solti played Shostakovich No. 5 conducting BPO.
fast but clear
Indeed I feel a lot of Anti-Soviet agitaton and bourgeouis formalism on it. Luckly, Comrade Jdanov will apply the due measures.
At 1:22 is that Gorbachev playing the double bass in the back row? 😂
Gorbachev is dead.
@@roberts932 obviously. Just pointing out that the double bass has a striking resemblance to Gorbachev. Besides, he was alive when this concert was recorded.
In my opinion, the end was way too fast haha but they sound incredible!
Il tempo e fantastico!
E la forza del Male che ti atrappa!
Way slower than Bernstein's version.
Same thought on my end, really messed with the tension
No loss of tension as I hear it.
If Berlin had only hired Solti to begin with...Karajan NEVER had this kind of fire...
If only the LA Phil hadn't been stupid and hired Mehta as his assistant without asking him...
Knockout performance. I think the tympanist could play his part in his sleep.
That’s Rainer Seegers for ya…cool as a cucumber, and recently retired!
Timpani dude's cool

inspiration on steroids!!!!!!
Dude….
Too fast, too fast, too fast. And then, puts on the brakes for the final bars. It is not in the score.
Evidentemente non sai la storia della 5a, e non capisci niente di quello che sta dentro!
Mravinsky is faster.
eeerrrrr . . what am i to say . .
Allegro non troppo does mean
NOT TOO FAST.

He needs to be issued a summons.
Solti’s like screw that
Nonsense about ‘Too Fast’. Shostakovich would have approved it.
