As a percussionist, I always love playing cymbals with a Russian composer's music. I'm old now, so I don't know if I could pull off Tchaikovsky'ys 4th, but I think I could do this one :)
@@Robert...Schrey obviously. Just pointing out that the double bass has a striking resemblance to Gorbachev. Besides, he was alive when this concert was recorded.
Yes I absolutely agree, the old man was speeding too fast, there's no nuance in melody line at all. It's a failure. Listen to Bernard Haitink version with the Concertgebow issued on DECCA level, it's a HUGE DIFFERENCE, WORLD APART. This is lousy, what happened to Solti that evening?
eeerrrrr . . what am i to say . . Allegro non troppo does mean NOT TOO FAST. is this yet another case of a conductor ignoring the composer's own directions for the sake of cheap thrills??
Music is here to have fun and experiment with, I find this tempo enjoyable, if you don't like it go listen to any of the 50,000 other recordings and stop elitistically whining
This whole symphony is brilliant! I have played piano & celesta a couple of times, for example in Helsinki Philharmonic under beloved James de Preist.
Exciting, masterful conducting!!
Amazing. I think everyone who was at that concert will remember it for the rest of their lives.
I know, right?! I saw Solti conduct Shosti 5 w the CSO around this same time. Unforgettable
one of the top ten endings in all of classical music
BERLIN is one of the greatest halls! I was there last year! Stunning!
This part is my best love of Shostakovich's. Nothing compares this part in how percussion is leading the music.
Try to listen to the percussion in the end of his 7th symphony. Its like no other
@@hillcresthiker … or the 12th for that matter.
Solti is the best for evertime...
This is absolutely spectacular. God Bless those kids having a riot!
Vibrante
Sir Georg Solti, Ladies and Gentlemen!

me too
Stunning!
I know, right?! I have also posted all four movements of this performance, if you would like to enjoy the rest.
I wonder why this isn't on the Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall?
The greatest of his great work
This music made me very happy.
0:11 one of audience covers his ears 😂
Gorgeous.
The best: best orchestra, best hall & acoustics and the best of the best conductor - Toscannini and then Solti = Master in Hebrew.
1:39 Der Kleine hinter dem Pauker hat Spaß! 😂
For me the best part of the 4th mov (that part is phenomenal): 2:11 - 3:25
2:48 !!!!
BREAKNECK TEMPO!! FABULOUS CONTRAST THROUGHOUT!!
If Berlin had only hired Solti to begin with...Karajan NEVER had this kind of fire...
If only the LA Phil hadn't been stupid and hired Mehta as his assistant without asking him...
Indeed I feel a lot of Anti-Soviet agitaton and bourgeouis formalism on it. Luckly, Comrade Jdanov will apply the due measures.
fast but clear
At 1:22 is that Gorbachev playing the double bass in the back row? 😂
Gorbachev is dead.
@@Robert...Schrey obviously. Just pointing out that the double bass has a striking resemblance to Gorbachev. Besides, he was alive when this concert was recorded.
Klaus Tennstedt is also in the bass section
Is this from Japanese TV program? I didn't know Solti played Shostakovich No. 5 conducting BPO.
Bravissimo Sir Georg! Capisce la musica, rarissimo fra I direttori d'oggi!
Knockout performance. I think the tympanist could play his part in his sleep.
That’s Rainer Seegers for ya…cool as a cucumber, and recently retired!
Timpani dude's cool
In my opinion, the end was way too fast haha but they sound incredible!
Way slower than Bernstein's version.
Same thought on my end, really messed with the tension
No loss of tension as I hear it.
Shatter, kyouka suigetsu
Stunning
Was this before the invention of women?

inspiration on steroids!!!!!!

Was Solti in a hurry to get somewhere?
4:14
Dude….
Too fast, too fast, too fast. And then, puts on the brakes for the final bars. It is not in the score.
Mravinsky is faster.
The score has to be learnt

The audience thinks differently.
eeerrrrr . . what am i to say . .
Allegro non troppo does mean
NOT TOO FAST.
is this yet another case of a conductor ignoring the composer's own directions for the sake of cheap thrills??
He needs to be issued a summons.
Solti’s like screw that
Nonsense about ‘Too Fast’. Shostakovich would have approved it.
