Hebrew University in Jerusalem has suspended an internationally renowned Palestinian professor for saying that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian is a feminist scholar whose work focuses on the impacts of militarization, surveillance and violence on the lives of Palestinian women and children. She made the remarks in an interview on Israel’s Channel 12 on Monday, where she also said it was time to “abolish Zionism.” Shalhoub-Kevorkian has been under pressure to resign from her position at Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law Institute of Criminology and at the School of Social Work and Public Welfare since October, when she signed a petition of over 1,000 academics calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. This comes as no universities have been left standing in the Gaza Strip, and nearly 5,000 university students and staff have been killed during Israel’s assault. “I am calling for abolishing Zionism because I see it as very violent towards the people and as causing criminality,” says Shalhoub-Kevorkian, who discusses the atmosphere of silencing and reprisals against those who criticize Israel’s policies toward Palestinians. “Anti-Zionism is to refuse to accept continued dispossession, is to refuse to accept this ideology of supremacy, is to refuse to accept the securitized ideas of one group against the other.”

It is a worldwide problem including all universitates in any NATO member.
I'm not so sure academic freedom has been a good thing. It seems that some people think they are free to teach whatever they wish, even if its made up, or historically and contextually evil. Perhaps academia should require certain restraints. For example, we probably shouldn't teach kids all the things in Mao's little red book when they are in 3rd 4th and 5th grades. They might just grow up to be Mao'ists. And we probably shouldnt be teaching them all this trans stuff so early either, kind of a population risk if you know what I mean.....
Like wise UNRA probably shouldn't be teaching kids how to stab a Jew in the street. We've now seen how that results.
We most definitely should be teaching them how to calculate taxes, raise animals, and grow vegetables. More of that, and less of the stabby stuff. Then things will smooth over, I'm sure of it.

One other perspective about Zion is provided in the book Watchman on the Walls by Hannah Hurnard (a pacifist and Quaker) who wrote an eyewitness account of the formation of modern-day Israel. In it there is letter from the British High Commissioner about the end of the British Mandate in Palestine, and his vision of Peace, for Jews and Arabs alike. Hurnard specifically answers 3 key questions about Israel/Zion from a Christian perspective (includes viewpoints from Hebrew and Arab Christians). One thing to remember is that Arabs and Jews are both Semitic peoples. Only in more recent times has anti-semitism has come to mean anti-jewish.

This is not my grandfather's Zionism. We had always been supportive of Jewish aspirations for a homeland in the Holy Land. We stood with Israel from the beginning, but this is not what we bargained for. Zionism has become a seriously flawed, Jewish supremacist ideology that seeks to destroy the Palestinian people and denies their right to exist as a free people in the land of their birth. For 50 years, the U.S. government, media, & education had kept us in the dark. Our information was all pro-Zionist, including newspapers, magazines, television & Hollywood and back in the 20th Century, none of our neighbors were Palestinians. Humanity must face the fact that there are three stages in Western societies/un civilization. 1) the conquering and genocide of the indigenous people land and culture. 2) setting up colonial governments, institutions and so called democracy. 3) The final stage, outright fascism.

That gives me hope, in the face of all this brutality coming out of Israel and with world leader's complicity in crimes against humanity, that there is a better world not only possible, but beginning to be made amidst the rubble of this one.
