  • British-Israeli historian Professor Avi Shlaim was born in Iraq to Jewish parents in 1945, and moved to the newly established State of Israel as a 5-year-old. He speaks to TRT World about how Jews lived peacefully in the Arab and Muslim world before Zionism and the import of anti-Semitism from Europe.

      @@Anp562 In the late 1940's and early 1950's there were tensions between the Jewish community and the rest of the Iraqi people, probably because many Jews were suspected as Zionists. Meny left where they could. However, I believe that if the state of Israel was not created and the known atrocities didn't took place, his family would have stayed there.
      Today Iraqi Jews count no more than several thousands, and their number remained the same for 70+ years

      Jews were persecuted and discriminated against in Europe at that time when nationalist European ideologies were emerging. Jewish people were very aggressively excluded from these nationalisms. Therefore the people around Herzl (the Zionists) developed the ideology of their own Jewish nation. However, the nation state was missing.
      That's why they wanted to found it in Palestine. No, they didn't think much about the Palestinians. They were a persecuted minority in Europe. But apart from that, they were Europeans and the normal racist view that Europeans of that time had of the rest of the world was also theirs.
      Incidentally, this European view has not fundamentally changed since then.
      Well, maybe with young people.
      The sheer barbarity of the Holocaust left Europeans around the world with a guilty conscience after World War II. Suddenly they wanted to see the Jews as their equals and wanted to fulfill them a wish.
      The fact that the Europeans themselves didn't have to give up anything to fulfill this wish made it even easier.
      And again they didn’t think much about Palestinians or Arabs. Regardless of their religion, Arabs simply did not play a role in these considerations; they were not important.
      As I already said, normal European racism.

      Go to google news website, search for Trucknet Enterprise. There’s a Dec 27 article that describes how this Israeli company was working with those five states to create a land bridge so that goods can be delivered to Israel despite the Houthi blockade. That bridge is functioning now.

    • @halifaxeh
      @halifaxeh 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m certainly not interested in refuting your point. But I am wondering why you wrote that? Does it go back in history? Or is it because they aren’t taking Palestinians in now? If it’s the latter, then from my understanding, it’s because they know that if they assist Israel in clearing Gaza of Palestinians, it’s all over for them to ever go back and have their homeland. And each country does already have hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees because of all the other Israeli atrocities over the past two decades. So it seems a tough position to be in - keep them in Gaza and have so many killed? Or get them all out only for the whole population to lose their home? Neither is a good choice, but I suppose less killing is better. But where will Israel turn next to steal more land? West Bank? As if they haven’t stolen enough of that already? 😢

    • @ahmeda.3198
      @ahmeda.3198 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Go to Google News and look up: Trucknet Enterprise.
      Read the Dec 27 article in Times of Israel.
      This Israeli company is working with five Arab states to create a land bridge so that Israel continues to get goods despite the Houthi blockade.

    • @ahmeda.3198
      @ahmeda.3198 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Then, as a follow up, taken note that a few days there was a story from India about how trade unions in India are refusing to load weapons on container ships destined to Israel.
      Well, given the Houthi blockade, then how is it possible for any ship to get its cargo to Israel? Through the Arab land bridge.
      That means these five Arabs states have not only been undermining Houthi economic pressure to force Israel into a ceasefire, but they’ve also been facilitating the continued flow of weapons (and domestic goods), by way of their land bridge.

    I have Iraqi friends whose parents commiserate about the lost relationships with Jewish Iraqi friends. I have heard these commiserations for 40 years. On the other hand, Canadian Jewish people I knew of Ashkenazi heritage referred to my hairdresser as a dirty *** as he was from Morocco. I questioned this position. The superiority/inferiority paradigm was clearly a normalized belief.

    Absolutely, this gentleman is a breath of fresh air. I really like listening to it because I love the history of religions and their chronology, anthropology etc... It's very instructive and enriching for anyone who wants to free themselves from clichés and idiocies. Moreover it was the British government which administered Iraq at the time, which decided to establish a Hashemite kingdom in Iraq and Faisal became king of Iraq in 1921 before dying in 1933 You have to see the traitorous Sykes and Picot (the destruction of the Ottoman Empire). His grandson Faisal II was deposed and assassinated during General Kassem's coup d'état on July 14, 1958. Churchill boasted of having created Jordan with a pencil one afternoon in Cairo. In fact, it is especially Great Britain which is at the origin of all the region's ills. The English were deeply racist and the USA much more anti-Semitic than the Germans before 1945. It was Freud who wrote this in his analysis of Wilson, and co-written with one of the latter's right-hand men. Before the 19th century, the term "anti-Semite" did not exist, it was anti-Judaism. And I believe that Zi****ism represents a danger for Judaism...

    • @Miki-fl9ez
      @Miki-fl9ez 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Anti-Semitism is actually a very accurate term
      The hatred of Europeans towards Jews stems from ancient Aryan hatred for Semites
      The thing is that Jews also play Anti-Semitic canards when talking about "Arab beasts"

      @@Miki-fl9ez Not really accurate, because semites encompass all those who descend of the peoples originated in the region that today encompasses Palestine, Jordan as well as parts of Lebanon and Syria, regardless of religion, and, according to most historians, a great number of jews (mainly those of European origin and their descendants, which make up the majority of Israelis, btw) are very likely NOT semite, which not only makes the choice to broadly apply the term exclusively to jews (to the exclusion and erasure of arabs) technically wrong, but also a clearly VERY intentional political one.
