Palestine Talks | Chris Hedges on the moral corruption of Israel and the “savagery” of violence

  • In this episode of Palestine Talks, we speak to writer and activist Chris Hedges as he discusses the philosophical nature of the evil underlying Israel’s violence against the Palestinian people, and the radical dehumanisation of Palestinians based on his own troubling experience covering stories in war zones.
He also discusses how American media, paralleling the propaganda of the Israeli lobby, deliberately trivialises such violence and misleads the public.
As Hedges points out, this reflects how such media including outlets that enjoy a “liberal” or “progressive” reputation like The New York Times “embraces American militarism”, contemptuous of both human life and the possibility of peace grounded in actual principles of justice.

And what a pleasure it is to hear a calm, reasonable discussion of this troubled situation, as hideously awful as the subject matter is. I like this moderator, and Chris Hedges is THE impeccable expert on Palestine, having received his 'trial by fire' in the belly of the beast known as extremist Zionism. The Real News did itself no branding favors by removing him from their site...including his entire past presence. I guess that rubbing out his record was sufficient for TRN's principle conservative donor. How worrisome that a handful of plutocratic zealots can control the conversation and thus enable genocide in front of our eyes.

Mr Hedges.. I'm Kenyan by birth. It hurts my being tremendously knowing how my people underwent such brutality and utter dehumanization. It's a feeling that has recurred over generation and quiet truthfully may never be erased. Most of our us defer these sentiments or just try to uncomfortably exorcise them even generationally removed from them. My grandpa inexorably did after much of my unrelinquished prodding... painful as it still is. Gaza and the bloody fight for Palestine is opening those urgly memories all over again. I was not there then when my forefathers fought for me to be alive today.. but I'm here now to fight for the future of the Palestinians. I believe most of the world shares my sentiments. Chris Hedges tells 'inconvenient' truths. Sometimes they're not particularly pragmatic for the power structures (e.g.. the Biden campaign), but as for me, I'd rather have the truth and decide my own brand of pragmatism, political strategy, or transactionalism in how I vote or otherwise activate politically. It's called "being an adult in a democracy." Too bad if somebody doesn't like it.

Of course I have a lot of these too, but at least try to listen to a range of voices from time to time. It's time-consuming and - to use your words - often truly inconvenient. But necessary. And it is (at least in my case) still far from being politically or really active. That's even more inconvenient, to actually be a driver of some kind of change. Or just to disagree with something openly. It is scary and brave, that's why it's so important to support experts and voices like Chris Hedges.

I really enjoyed this interview. It is not the first time I have seen Chris Hedges speak. I saw him speak at a church in Ottawa, Ontario many years ago. I also have a few of his books. Very insightful!! He is a Christian, theologically trained, a former war correspondent (I always think their views are important!) and jaded enough to know the human condition is not pretty. I commented earlier, but I did not mention, I stopped this interview several times to back it up to revisit what he said. I had quite an impact. Thanks to TRT for this interview of a North American Christian and journalist that is increasingly being marginalized. The powers that be will continue to try and they may succeed, but some of us are already on to them. We are listening, Chris! Keep up the good work brother!! :)

      Govt by People's Referenda:
Peaceful Occupation of our Capitals until it's installed, or run Mascot Candidates
Single Issue Referendums with thresholds and a social contract means Communities can vote their own laws.
A Public Authority can audit police and prosecute bad cops in our own courts.
Nationalise resources and give Indigenous peoples the right of Sovereignty over them as Guardians.
This can be achieved through a General Strike or Velvet Revolution, much like the Occupy movement, peacefully occupying State Buildings until a People's Mandate can be implemented.
With the appropriate checks and balances, you could have a national digital forum where qualified professionals can debate the issues in a public setting without all the disinformation and bad faith antics, hatespeech etc.
Any vote would need to pass the 70% threshold, with a veto or _rewrite_ vote needing 30%.
The issues would be debated, the public educated, and then a vote taken. Votes that fail will have to wait a year before trying again. Any new proposal (Citizen Initiated Referendum) would have to reach a threshold of support before it made it onto the register. This would be subject to a Social Contract (New Constitution) that forbids human rights abuses and discrimination.
That can be written in the same manner based on the core principles we all share. Councils and Boards could operate in the same fashion at Scale.
It works in a way that obligates people to better educate themselves ( that is to use logic and evidence in their reasoning ) for a better understanding of the issues, and then take collective responsibility for the outcomes. As opposed to the divisive US v them scapegoating and bi-partisan finger pointing the current Capitalist Pyramid Scheme runs on.
We need Government by People's Referenda, either through Mascot Candidates or Peaceful Occupation of the Capitals until one is established.
Make it an annual event on Oct 14

Not exactly. The jews went to Palestine with the intention to take over the region and drive out the Palestinians from the beginning. When Europeans came to north america they had no intention of driving out or killing the native Americans. All of them mrtely thought of north America as planet earth, a continent, big enough for all to spread out and live. I realize things changed over time, like a few hundred years. But the euro refugee Jews always intended on taking away the land from Palestinians and eliminating them totally. From the beginning.

It's a conscious tactic done in order to destroy context, and thus any thought on, or debate of, Israel's current actions. To imply that this conflict didn't start with Hamas would imply that both Palestinians' and Israeli's actions need to be historically analyzed, and the crimes of October 7 contextualized, which would inevitably lead to the deconstruction of Israel's tapestry of falsehoods.
The whole point is to prevent any analysis of Israel's actions, putting all the onus of change, restraint, and responsibility, upon a victimized population that has no possibility to achieve it (due to the conscious actions conducted by Israel), as opposed to a powerful state entity and military apparatus that has functioning institutions, a relatively functional democracy (for some of their population), and the full backing of wealthy Western countries.
It's also the reason why they will never refer to Hamas', or Palestinians', actions as complex, which they will for Israel and its army; and it's also the reason why they will focus discussion on "bringing the hostages home", but never expand that term to mean the 5000 or so Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Again, this is a conscious strategy, that has been extensively thought-out by the Israelis, all done in order to legitimize what they're currently doing, but also what they've always done.

Very scary how these Jews are literally converts from Germany, Russia, and Ukraine who have no ancestors genetically linked to the 12 tribes of Israel. DNA tests have consistently proved that they are not of the Biblical lineage, not the Hebrews , not related to any of the 12 tribes of the Biblical Covenant.

The basis of antisemitism in Christian and Islamic society is the cultural appropriation of Judaism by these other religions. Cultural appropriation also results in hatred by the larger dominant society that is doing the appropriation for the smaller, weaker society that is being appropriated. In places like China and India where there is no cultural appropriation of Judaism, then there is no antisemitism.
