Why Israel is in deep trouble: John Mearsheimer with Tom Switzer

  • US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on 29 September 2023 that “The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades.” That all changed on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, which unsurprisingly invaded Gaza to destroy Hamas.
After more than six months, it appears to many that Israel is losing its war in Gaza. At the same time, Israel is fighting Hezbollah on its northern border, relations between Jerusalem and Washington are strained, and the International Court of Justice has ruled that a plausible case can be made that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
Meanwhile, there is great danger of escalation across the region, as the fighting between Israel and Iran makes clear. Indeed, there is a possibility the United States, which is already fighting the Houthis, might end up in a war with Iran, which neither country wants.
What might be the lasting consequences of these conflicts? Who will emerge weaker and who stronger? And what does this crisis mean for U.S. foreign policy in the region, Ukraine and East Asia?
Next in our Greater Middle East Debate Series, Bret Stephens will be taking a very different stance on the Israel and Palestinian conflict on 18 June in Sydney and 20 June in Melbourne. Get your tickets: www.cis.org.au/event/bret-ste...

Sorry... Palestine didnt exist. That is just a name Rome gave to Israel after they invaded in 70 AD. I know you think you are so smug but you dont know history. It was under the Ottomans who were not even Arab from 1517 to 1917 and there was never a Palestinian state. The Arabs who call themselves Palestinian came to the area after 1880 (not the Bedouins who today are citizens of Israel and serve in the Israel military).

The truth is, America initially invaded Iraq to break the Sunnis' grip on power and transfer control to the Shiites. This transformation was expected to usher the Muslim world into a sectarian conflict, weakening both sides. As a result, it would provide America and the West with significant opportunities to meddle in the region's affairs and sell large quantities of weaponry to their allied regimes. Above all, it would distract Israel's enemies with unending factional wars.

I did not hear the professor point out to the audience that no Jews could live In Gaza under Hamas rule. Jews could not work in Gaza, vote in Gaza, hold office in Gaza. Gaza, under Hamas rule, was an apartheid state. Jews, in fact, were subject to being murdered under Hamas rule - so they all left, understandably. In contrast, Palestinians in Israel can vote, they can work in Israel, they can serve as elected officials, they can sue in courts, and they are afforded the same constitutional rights as Israeli's. In his remarks the professor continually talked about Israel being an apartheid state, which is not true, while covering up what should be obvious - that Gaza under Hamas rule was the "real" apartheid state. Only Palestinians can live in Gaza - Jews could not, if they tried to live in Gaza - when Hamas was running the show - they were subject to being murdered - just because they are Jews. The typical Palestinian hates the Jews because they are are Arab and not Muslim. The typical Palestinian wants the state of Israel to be destroyed, they want the region "ethnically cleansed" of all Jews. Yet, this professor keeps talking about Israel wanting to "ethnically cleanse" the Palestinian people. The professor, in fact, is doing what the left now does a lot - he is making up lies and falsehoods to smear the side he doesn't favor. The fact is most most Palestinians support the genocide of the Jews. The Jews want to live in peace, the Palestinians , most, want to murder all Jews. (70% approval rating of the atrocities that took place on on Oct. 7th). The Professor here, quite obviously, has taken sides in his views on the conflict, he has aligned himself with the leftists who claim, falsely, that the ews are genocidal and racists. It's the other way around.

I've met almost no Zionists who can be honest about the situation, they way over-exaggerate the evilness of Palestinians, and some people are so anti-Zionist they literally think the only solution is to dismantle Israel entirely. I agree with most of what Mearsheimer says, here and elsewhere. His analysis are clear and convincing. Realism is an attitude that is well suited to understand and describe reality. But I think it should not be allowed to be used synthetically because it's lacking any moral grounding.
It's so easy to acknowledge that genocide (or for that matter any random crime at any scale) is the best if not the only means to achieve a goal that from some perspective might seem or even is legitimate.
For the most part of my 5+ decades of life I felt that "those of us" and me are comfortably in the mainstream. I gladly accepted the burden of collective guilt, not because of the language I speak or my genetical makeup, I accepted that burden because I wanted to live in a world in which something like the Holocaust only happens where there is no civilization, because the civilized world experienced, condemned and thus learned from us Germans as the worst possible example.
Now I have to accept that "those of us" and me are called Antisemites because we don't want to see civilians discriminated, starved, terrorized and murdered. I don't care if this is called genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing. I want it to stop.
I deeply respect Mearsheimer for pointing out what he believes is happening and why. But I can hardly bear the non-chalance and the projected inevitability he expresses. None of what's happening is inevitable, necessary, acceptable.
What made the Holocaust so unique in human history are not the numbers or the target. It was the honesty, the non-chalance, the industriousness that made it so horrible.
My father was born 1933. He told me stories about his childhood in a city that was heavily bombed. He told me about the body parts of people he spoke to hours before on his way home. He stuttered for decades. And he was a German, not a victim. He deserved to be bombed, not because he was a ten year old Nazi, just because he was there. You are not a Nazi at the age of ten. A Palestinian child is not a terrorist. A Jew is a human being. So are we all.
I don't hold a grudge against the bombardment of cities that grew over centuries, even though I grew up in a country where some of these cities survived and the comparison between medieval cities with what has been rebuild in the fifties and sixties is harsh. That is because I understand why it happened. Culture and history, the preservation of heritage just doesn't matter in times of total war and barbarism. But we live in societies where property is the primary value of society. We have insurances for everything. In some countries we are allowed to defend our homes with lethal force. And yet, we deem it justified if somebodies house is turned to rubble. We deem it acceptable collateral damage if under the rubble there are corpses of children.
What did I feel guilty for all these years?

The politicians have to choose among options that can materialise in the future but we have only the options that materialised in the past and these happening in the present as a reference to judge.
The politicians are acting upon incomplete information and they rely on belief and ideology to compensate.
Take cars as an example. In France car traffic kills 5000 people every year. Why not simply outlaw automotive vehicles and save 5000 lives yearly? There's a cost to it that is not known for sure that have to be estimated and balanced against the automotive transport system tol on human lives.
Unfortunately politics are by definition a Machiavellian exercise of predicting the least bad decisions to make about the uncertain future.

    • @michaelutech4786
      @michaelutech4786 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@halnineooo136 It is one thing to recognize limited options and then to choose the least offensive of these. That is at least to some extend a necessity that results from context as you argue in your first paragraph.
It is an entirely different thing to pretend that the options chosen are the only one available or that they are options to choose from at all.
The example you choose results in the number of victims of 5,000, which is in a similar order of magnitude as the victims in Gaza which is around 30,000. One could argue that if such a mundane and unmalicious decision like allowing automobile traffic results in so many preventable deaths, is the bombardment of Gaza then really so unacceptable if that too serves a purpose such as guaranteeing the security of Israeli citizens and their right to a state, peace and prosperity?
My answer is that such examples and comparisons are most often wrong, in this case for a wide variety of reasons.
One is just numbers. 5K/60M is not quite the same as 30K/2M, not even the same order of magnitude, not by far.
Another one is that victims of automobile traffic in most cases participate in traffic by choice. They take the risk in exchange for convenience. They could have used public transport or choose a job not requiring commuting. Such a choice is in most cases not fictitious, you really can choose in France. People in Gaza have no such choice and no benefit. They just die. Driving a car is perceived as a value for drivers, being detonated by a bomb is not. Try to find a Palestinian who would demonstrate for their right to be massacred by bombing.
More importantly, the bombing in Gaza does not solve the problem. Israel cannot defeat Hamas. Not technically by killing Hamas' infrastructure in Gaza and much less in reality where Hamas and similar organizations can easily replace both leadership and recruits over time and with every innocent victim and layer of outrage, this will be easier. But not even the more cynical interpretation of goals in the form of a genocide will end the conflict, and by that I mean what motivates normal Israeli citizens to support their governments in engaging in that conflict. Israel will not be more secure, it will not succeed in finding peace by killing everybody who hates them and wants to take their territory away.
Killing civilians at scale is not comparable to allowing automobile traffic at all. Allowing automobile traffic might be a bad choice informed by circumstances, a genocide is a crime, one of if not the worst imaginable crime. It's not a choice for civilized human beings to make.
To be fair, I owe Israel choices. The problem with that is of course that there are no choices that solve this problem, at least not in the short term. But it's easy to see that there are many better choices than to bombard civilians. Israel could hunt down Hamas fighters with ground troops. That would certainly result in many more Israeli casualties. But that is the price to pay for war. It's always easier and cheaper to just kill prisoners of war than to guard and feed them. Yet the rules of humane war fare (as is that exists) oblige us to not kill them. It's a war crime to kill prisoners. But even that is better than to indiscriminately kill civilians.
When looking for solutions for problems as entrenched like that in Israel, there are very few examples to be found in history. One of my favorites is the Northern Ireland conflict. The bloodshed has been ended, even though the conflict partners still hate each other. What changed is that for a time, both the UK and Ireland have been part of the EU. That removed a lot of contention, most practical issues feeding the problem simply disappeared. The greatest remaining motivation to keep fighting was ideology and few people really want to die for only ideology and hatred. Most even don't want to kill for it. French and Germans called each other hereditary enemies. They kept fighting over centuries. They still don't really like each other, but a war between them is unthinkable today. But what is there left to fight over if there are no borders?
That's why I don't believe a two state solution is possible. It would require a compromise between people who hate each other. I don't think that ever worked. A one state solution would only require the rule of law. It's hard to convince the stronger party to submit to justice when they have the jungle on their side, but the question is whether it's really peace that Israel wants. If so, justice is certainly part of peace, you just can't have one without the other. If winning is all Israel cares about, this is where the rest of the world should deny Israel. Because otherwise, what's the meaning of the Nuremberg processes?
I don't believe in the concept of a lesser evil. Evil is just too bad in all of its forms. Killing children at scale is evil.

I can only agree with what you said. My point was to explain why the government of Germany for example took such an immoral stance by siding with Israel in what is clearly a crime. In their minds it is a you said a lesser evil. You may be familiar with train dilemma where a rogue brakeless train is going to hit three people but if it is timely switched to another track it would hit only one person. What to do? Pull the switch and save three people but kill one or do nothing and bear no responsibility in the death of three people? Is there really no responsibility if there was a way to save them? Is it acceptable to actively kill that one person to save three others?
I don't make a case to justify Israel's crimes in any way. Just trying to understand why politicians take positions that seem so immoral or at least amoral

    • @michaelutech4786
      @michaelutech4786 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@halnineooo136 The train dilemma: There are situations where you actually only have choices that in isolation are evil and the only reason why any such choice might be valid is because it would be the lesser evil. The problem with accepting any solution as valid or morally acceptable in general, is that it's so easy to claim that there were actually only bad choices and that the chosen one was not only among the lesser evils but actually the least evil. When evaluating an action, whether it's legal, political or personal, I think the starting point has to be the action in isolation. The way to handle the train dilemma is by evaluating the particular circumstances and then apply pardons for situations where a lesser evil can be blessed with hindsight instead of making it a policy.
I believe that this is actually at the core of your question as to why politicians are amoral. They operate on the assumption that they cannot act on morals and we agree to that.
In the case of Germany (and many other more passive supporters of Israel) is that they had to pay a high price, were they to oppose Israel unilaterally. I'm pretty certain that Germany would gladly go along with a fair policy if the USA would allow that. If Germany were to choose the moral thing to do, it could not restrict that to Israel and Palestine but had to do that in every case for it to be a meaningful change. If Germany was judged by the standards of the Nuremberg trials, it would probably not be convicted. The USA had worse chances to get away. That's at least my personal evaluation.
The problem is that if you convict Germany, you also had to convict the west, most of the Arab world together with a good part of the rest of the world. And then we get to the point that if everybody is guilty we can only argue based on lesser evils and we cannot even agree what makes an evil lesser or worse. And that's where we are.
If we would reject the premise of the lesser evil, then it would be unacceptable to bomb cities, no matter whether the city is Dresden, Jerusalem or Gaza. If you want to claim a train dilemma, then you have to argue it in each and every case and not only pretend but prove your case. If Israel had to do that, there were probably no more IDF pilots left to drop bombs, because they would all be entangled in murder vs. self-defense trials. That's obviously not what "we" do. But what if we did?
We are told that this would be the end of Israel or the world how we know it. But would it be? A Hamas rocket would also be a bomb. Whatever restrictions Israel would suffer, the same would apply to Hamas. But a kid throwing a stone is just different from a bomb. If Germany would be judged as conspirator with yet another genocide, it would probably change their attitude quickly. Would that be so bad?
I can't see that we don't want to live in a world that has a rule of a just law, we just choose a different world. The idea of a British Lord working cotton fields is not something that would have felt just to the nobility, but catching guys in west Afrika was a good investment. All it took to make that a lesser evil was to baptize them and provide salvation in exchange for "some" labor. The children in Gaza don't even get that much.
We know very well what it takes to establish a rule of law. We chose not to do it.
But even if we accept this to comply with pragmatism or realism, Israel is just breaking all moral boundaries.

Mearsheimer was one of my professors in grad school. I cannot emphasize enough how sincere and well-meaning this man is. He makes every effort to be objective in EVERY foreign policy analysis. He is a model academic -- interested only in getting to the truth, to the best of his ability. And despite his genius, he is astoundingly down to Earth, approachable, and generous with his time. If you disagree with any aspect of his analysis, so be it, but please know that the man is a model of personal and academic integrity.

He cherry picks history to fit the idea box he creates for himself. His idea that Russia is not Imperial nor has Imperial designs is flat out wrong. He doesn't admit he's wrong either because that would be a downgrade to his brand. A democratic and economically thriving Ukraine is a fundamental threat to Putins regime. This notion about NATO expansion is total bs .. yet your former prof readily spews this idea. Sweden / Finland are now in NATO - why ? Because those countries fear Imperialist Russia as do the Baltic states. Mearshimer is a broken man.. same with his wrong take on Israel / Palestinian conflict. "Drive them out". He should be able to site actual statistics on that .. if that was the plan ... "ethnic cleansing" there should be less Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank than a decade ago .... except thats not the case. He's an anti-semite cloaked in academia.

Hence it was overthrown by the US and British "intelligence" services and replaced with the brutal monarch "The Shah" who clung desperately to power despite being hated by the oppressed people until he was finally toppled in the revolution in the late 1970s, resulting in the rise of the clerics.

This entire presentation is a tragedy of deception and hot bubbling horse manure. _1)) “Israel is an Apartheid State”. As a South African and someone who proudly voted and stood up against the apartheid government, and who has visited Israel - I can say that this is a fowl lie. In Israel, Arabs&Palestinians can vote, are in parliament, have access to the same health care and are even in the Israeli military. THIS WAS AN UTTER IMPOSSIBILITY in apartheid South Africa. _2)) “Israel wants to ethnically cleanse”. As a nuclear power, Israel has had the power to wipe out every living Palestinian for many decades now - has it? Since 2005 when Gaza became sovereign- their population has steadily increased by over 40%. This is the polar opposite of ethnic cleansing, and yet this Mearsheimer has the gall to use the same term used to describe the Holocaust and Rwandan genocide! _3)) “After giving Gaza to the Palestinians, Israel immediately turned it into an open air prison”. Actually before making Gaza autonomous , both sides signed many peace agreements. Literally 3 months after gaining sovereignty, the Gaza Palestinians began firing death rockets at Israeli civilians. The result? Israel instituted protective measures. Then more rockets were fired, resulting in ever increasing spiral of security measures such as strong borders, barricades , blockades etc. (To date, over 100 000 rockets fired at Israel). Israel forcefully and painfully removing its own people from their homes and communities and giving Gaza COMPLETE autonomy was the ultimate test of ‘will a two state solution work?’. Make no mistake that with all the international funding and donations , Gaza could have easily become a mini Dubai by now with a vibrant safe economy. However with Hamas unceasingly calling for the murder of every living Israeli man woman and child and instituting this as their state policy, THEY CHOSE a different future for themselves! _4)) The great buffoonery of John Mearsheimer is that he treats this conflict as a territorial dispute, and a political dispute. NOTHING could be further from the truth. The majority root cause of the entire conflict is because of what the Palestinians are heavily invested in - and that ladies and gentlemen is ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM/EXTREMISM. There is good reason why the largest security wall on the border of Gaza has just been built, not by the Israeli’s but by the Egyptians. That’s right, it’s because the Palestinians aided and supported an ISLAMIC EXTREMIST group called The Muslim Brotherhood against Egypt’s government. The Palestinians have long chosen the worlds greatest sponsor of terrorism and brutal tyranny- the Islamic Republic of Iran as their mentor and sponsor. _______ THE FUNDAMENTAL ROOT CAUSE OF THIS ENTIRE CONFLICT is EXACTLY THE SAME as the EXTREMISM that flew the airliners into the Twin Towers ; that stole and raped 300 Nigerian school girls (who’ve never been seen again) ; that slaughtered so many in the France and Belgium terrorist attacks ; that bombed and set fire to churches in the Philippines, that murdered so many innocents in the Kenyan shopping mall attacks ; that beheaded dozens of Coptic Christians in Egypt , that annihilated entire towns and forced thousands of Kurdish women into sexual slavery - THE LIST GOES ON AND ON , and will continue until all the worlds infidels either convert or die. _5)) But as ‘genius’ John Mearsheimer says, let’s blame EVERYTHING on Israel

_5)) But as ‘genius’ John Mearsheimer says, let’s blame EVERYTHING on Israel

not to say your point isn't wrong about Israel but it would make a tiny dent nationwide given how much infrastructure costs, and overall because of countries like Saudi Arabia the US has a net gain from making and selling weapons to other countries. What's mainly holding the US back is its domestic military that costs 100s of billions every year with zero profit made (unlike the weapons being sold to other countries). If you want taxes not to skyrocket and have better infrastructure that is what you should be attacking, the US's own military as oppose to the weapons it gives to others (with Israel and Ukraine being some of the few exceptions).

Mearsheimer is not ignorant, but he is ignoring the occupation dynamic, which has never gone poof or become a summer day the way he is suggesting. A person that puts an animal in a cage (animal is a word some Israelis use to describe Palestinians) and then continuously uses a stick to instigate and enrage the animal by poking and teasing it and then be surprised when that animal gets a chance to bite him. Same thing with Gaza. As I said, the brutal occupation has never ended. Nobody should ever be surprised by that or discount it. And who controls that dynamic? Israel.

Protest rallies at university campuses in the US, Canada, Britain, and Australia against what (let there be no mistake about this) are the undeniably disproportionate responses by the Israeli Defense Forces [IDF] upon Gaza, for the heinous barbarism Hamas militia forces initiated on October 7, reached fever pitch in the last two weeks of April, and into May. However, it is also an undeniable reality that, Hamas’ strategists, were 101% certain Israel’s rejoinder to what its militia initially inflicted upon unarmed Israelis on October 7, would be met with the ferocious responses, which have transpired.
Therefore, the only conclusion to draw is that, Hamas’ military strategists willfully launched that gruesome attack on October 7, knowing full well Israel would respond ferociously. Essentially, Hamas was fully prepared to inevitably sacrifice the lives of many thousands of Gazans, in order for it to win the PR war. And there are two strands to contend with here.
First, they knew it was absolutely certain that the millions of Muslims currently residing in Western countries (which accrues to be in the vicinity of 30 million people) would culminate with them rallying en masse to stage pro-Palestinian, and anti-Western protests.
The second trait of its plan, was with banking upon gaining the sympathy of leftoid liberals in Western spheres: by way of manipulating their mindsets with seeing an unending parade of suffering in Gaza.
Well, the latter facet has certainly come to fruition, and prevails with leftist-leaning education federations in Western nations calling for ‘solidarity with Palestine’, and the ‘eradication of Israel, and its inhabitants’. However, these same entities haven’t summarily condemned the extreme barbarism that Hamas perpetrated on October 7, with callously massacring at least 1200 unarmed people, and raping numerous women.

John Mearsheimer is not just an incredible speaker but also a brilliant educator. Whenever he is infront of an audiance and is confronted by controversial questions, he does not make it about himself but rather tries to get the audiance involved in the thinking process. This way he also removes any sort of emotion from the discussion and brings it back to a solid framework of rational arguments. There are just very few experts who can do this in such a consistent way. This is also the reason why mainstream media often has a hard time with him.
