    your back won't last long working like that. try a winch on the reese hitch on your truck. You could also turn the mill around so the ramps are toward the log pile.

    You may totally intend to do milling only for your own use but if you go through the motions of starting a business as a sole proprietorship you get to write off all of your business related expenses. When i bought my mill it made a $5,000 difference in my income tax return. One of the things Trump did when he took office was to enable companies to write off capital expenses at 100% instead of taking depreciation over time

    OK - I was hedging on the LT35HD until I saw this video. I will absolutely pay an extra $8,500 for those hydraulic features. Like you, I will most likely be operating my mill alone most of the time and I'm going to want all the help I can get. I started watching your series from the beginning and I couldn't help but notice that you kept saying something to the effect that, "This is where the hydraulic system would come in handy." At the beginning of this video I was certain that you were going to say that you were going to fully upgrade to the LT35HD. You surprised me. I worked myself into a double hernia repair operation moving big firewood rounds. I know that if I don't get the HD system, I will likely damage something else moving big logs. At 60 years old, I don't heal as fast as I used to. Your video was very helpful, though it moved very slowly. Thanks.

      Thank you, if i had it to do all over again i would go hydraulic. Especially when you look at the added tax benefit. It you can afford a $15,000 mill then with the tax benefits you can now afford a $21,000 mill. To me the log clamp on the lt28 is the biggest pain in the butt. Going hydraulic removes all the big headaches

      @@MrJamieLudwig I pick up my new mill this Friday. I was unaware of any tax benefits. How does that work? Is that a state benefit?

    Jamie, Think about this ? Your work area is the same as ours roughly 100' in diameter . We pulled two 1/2in.overhead cables
    between four trees and form an x with the insect over the sweet spot our mill deck (actually moved the mill under it)
    after tensioning, cables level (this places the loaded cable sag over the sweet spot.
    We then mounted a remote operated 1200 lb.winch on a 1/2in. plate with a "gel cell " 12v battery next to it (KEEP IN MIND BALANCE AND ALIGNMENT TO THE LOAD ) We used 7/16 suspension cables on the trolley line to the powerhead (winch).
    This works great after working out of some bugs of suspension cable height and tension. Your trolley will of course, if on the short end, under load take off fast just like a zip line, so consider using a drag line to conrtrol the load. We pick up just enough
    to clear the ground, it will ground itself about every few feet.

      Michael Avery, that is a great idea. In the future I will have to see if and where I can employ that. If I'm in the woods I could position the mill between two trees. Thank you for your input

    I've bought two manual mills from Woodmizer and later bought the hydrolics from them. Ran the hydrolics with a 5 1/2 hp Honda. You can do the same with that mill.

    Nice machine . Wrestling them logs wow ... If it were me i would have a pulley & rope system or at least use that pick up sittin there to move them logs . A pulley & Rope system would surprisingly well

    A lot of extra effort moving that log around. I'd use a chain off the hitch ball of that pickup to drag it most of the way. No matter how much you like to work, you only get one body. By the time you are my age you will appreciate letting mechanical devices do the work. If you haven't destroyed your back and legs. You don't necessarily need a skid steer, just know how to use winches, blocks and tackle. With enough pulleys and such you can make short work out of just about any load.

      Lawrence Withrow, I agree. I addressed these comments in my video "milling a 20"log pt1". I just should have been more clear in this video. My next plan is to build a log arch

    Nice video, I’ve had a LT 15 for 10 years all manual and thinking about a upgrade it’s not any means efficient of speed but I can see for an upgrade to a LT28 would be a down grade for me, the extra work I see you put in moving, loading, adjusting, turning, is way more work than I do on my lt15 I’m not about speed when I saw but saving your energy for everything else that comes with sawing! Watching you roll that log over to the bunk was dreadful!! Not the labor of getting it there but after it’s finally on the bunk the dirt that blade is gonna go thru!!! Last week I turned down 3 jobs from dirty logs, I still charge them for damaged blades but no sense in dulling blades with dirt!! It would be interesting to see how that turner works for quarter sawing! Thanks for your info on thoughts of there upgrade to the 35!!

    • @MrJamieLudwig
      @MrJamieLudwig  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jason, If you are thinking of an upgrade I would only be thinking of going hydraulic.
      Most of my log turning is done with the cant hook unless the log is so big hat it is more work than the log turner. The log turning will be much better when I upgrade to an electric winch. I very much look forward to the ability to turn down work like you did. But you have 10 years on me. I made a deal with a local tree guy that I will get his logs and I will only pay him 15% when I sell the lumber.
      Happy milling

    • @jasononeill3981
      @jasononeill3981 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Ludwig yes an electric winch would help a lot!! Should be able to get one at harbor freight for under a hundred and when your there, “if you don’t have one already “ I would suggest a metal detector too!! Sounds like you have a good deal going with your tree guy I have one too but when he brings in yard trees I’ll run my detector over them, I have a coffee can full of relics I’ve dug out! Before and after I’ve hit them!! nails, screws, planter hangers, bullets, barb wire etc, a few months back I had a customer in need of some 2x6 and he had the logs while I was setting up I had him run the detector over them he kept saying there fine nothings in them I’m not sure but I think he never turned it on cus by the time I was done cutting 10 boards his bill was, almost $70.00 for blades and 1hr@ $45.00 per hr sawing he complained “I could of got it cheaper at the lumber yard” I told him that’s what you get for getting in a rush!! Lol! Any way I have 6 black walnut and three spruce logs I need to get started on! I’m hoping for the wind to die down today and warm up a bit! I think our nice fall days are almost done in Wis. good luck!! Saw on!!!!

    Thanks for the video. Right now I am waiting on the special edition mill that Woodmizer is coming out on Black Friday,if it't not what I want then I am looking at the LT28 or LT35 manual.
    If you have the room(and level ground) could yo turn the mill around to your log pile and just winch the logs yo the mill?

    • @MrJamieLudwig
      @MrJamieLudwig  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sam, for most of the milling here I have had that availability of a skid steer. I only had to move a total of four logs like that. I shot that part of the video because I wanted to demonstrate the work that is involved in moving a log that distance. There is another log pile to the right and I will be turning the mill around for those. I hope I don't need to be kicking myself on black Friday when Wood-Mizer makes the reveal of their new mill. Good luck on you choice.

  • @billparker1892
    @billparker1892 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally get your point but you have to have a work smarter not harder mentality in that situation i would put the loader on the same side as the pile of logs unless for some reason you weren't able too.

    This seems like a lot of unnecessary work. Where is your chainsaw and cut those dog knots off for one far easier to roll and you have a truck sitting there put a chain on it and drag it to the mill. Dont work hard work smart man you only have one back. I use to work with far less and still didnt have to put out that much effort because i looked for ways to make it easier. By the way who say you cant upgrade that 28 with a grinder and a cheap buzzbox welder you can fabricate any upgrade on any machine. Of course i would wait till any warantees expire but that gives you time to build up the working cash for material to upgrade with.

    It might be worth looking into a cheap used tractor with a loader. Sure a new shiny Kubota would match your mill but since you have shown you can get by without a tractor if the used one is a bit un-reliable who cares.

      My next investment with this will be to build a log arch that is big enough for about a 34" log. The ones I have priced cost around $2000. I believe I could build it for around $400

  • @glputman9091

      6 min and the log is still on the ground
      10 logs x 6 min = 1 hr
      1-2 hrs per day rolling logs around is not efficient.
      There is a difference between working and making money.
      The lost productivity of the 500 -1000 board ft during the 2 hrs is tremendous.
      As a businessman you always have be looking at the numbers
      The return over time would say the upgrades or features would be a good investment.
      Long term you won’t be breathing so heavy every 6 min
      Your going to be your own boss and not many people dare to even take the risk!
