If you were to load the log lift with a bunch of rounds and raise it to a horizontal position then work from the opposite side. That’s the most efficient way to run it. Cheers Mark
Good demo! That was some seriously gnarly stuff, and the 17 RS ate it up and spit it out! IMO, you just can't do better than a Honda engine. I have one on my splitter that I rescued from a pressure washer, and it's the easiest starting engine I've ever had, bar none. Thanks for the video and happy splitting!
That’s a nice quality machine to give the homeowner a better choice than the big box stores, thanks for running and reviewing it. Good to see your log supply building back up.
Joe, you are correct. The squeaky wheel does indeed get the grease. But remember - it's also the first one to get replaced!! 😅 Glad to see that you were able to get more logs.
Great to see some splitting again Joe. Elaine from Canada here, wow, that WR hardly missed a beat going thru that hard beech and maple! Pretty impressive, thanks for showing it off. Glad to see the logs filling up the wood yard again too. Great video shots and editing, cheers.
It’s always underestimated how much wood a guy has just laying on the ground! You can fill a truck box up fairly quick and make an easy campfire wood sale. There is a market for all wood, even the scraps. Nice splitter! ✌️
Wolf Ridge makes a quality machine!! Thanks for showing us this one. When I run a horizontal machine with log lift I like to walk around the machine to operate the controls. It may take time but you avoid the trip hazard of the lift table, and hot engine/exhaust. If your running it all day just something to think about!
Good showing of difficult pieces to split. Most companies show the easiest stuff to split. Parts edited away that made me question if the splitter was doing a clean split or had to physically struggle with pulling the pieces apart at the end of the push. Any physical makes splitting more tiring at the end of the day, especially as I'm 64 and want to keep burning wood. I had to modify my splitter with a taller set-back blade added on top of my blade and flare the sides more to get the wood pulled apart. I no longer am tired from running pieces through several times or pulling them apart at the end of the push. These are a very big deal to me. The forward design of the blade made it appear that it may be good at doing a clean split, but I was left unsure. If using the log lift, I'd split all my small stuff first and then step off of the lift and split the bigger stuff last. It would definitely save the back, since wouldn't be leaning so far.
Enjoy you sharing part of life. Just a hint if you are on the other side of the machine and leave the log lift up it gives you more room to table what needs to be re split. Less bending over better on the back as we get older.
Joe,not bad at all for never running a horizontal log splitter but you still got the rounds that were just hanging around in your wood 🪵 yard and hope you enjoyed yourself in Germany 🇩🇪 😮😊❤
Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. A very interesting machine at circa $5800. However, I couldn't link in to North American prices to compare it to the Eastonmade Ultra, which I know doesn't have a log lift. You know me Joe, I am a great advocate for vertical splitters for their accuracy in smaller splits so that is where my choice would be every time. As you say - the smaller the split the greater the profit!
I'll be in the market for a small splitter next year. We process wood in two locations so the processor can stay where the logs get delivered. Location number 2 is wood that I haul out of the forest and buck with chainsaw so a small machine like this would do alright
That's a great machine. I think loading from one side and splitting while standing on the other side would be a bit more efficient. You gave it a bit of a workout for sure!
Hi Cliff - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I like your use of the word "wee". That links you to Northern Ireland where its use is commonplace. I suspect you have Irish ancestry.
Hello Joe. Awesome to see a Wolfe Ridge in your woodyard. That was real nice of the owner to let you run it. I have limited time on the 17RS but I was impressed!! I currently have the 28 Pro on demo and it’s their first entry level splitter that is standard with log lift and adjustable wedge. Still getting use to it but so far I love it! Love that wheel barrow too😂 Take care 👍🏻👍🏻
I am a huge proponent of the log lift but that is from experience with my Super Splitter. It seemed the logs I was splitting was the big ones I couldn't lift!
Joe, that Wolfridge 17RS is Work- Horse. Yes it doesn't have a Hydraulic Wedge, or ability to Split Long Wood but the Quality is there. That is the 1 I am Looking to get in time. So I have Made a Big Decision. I am going back to Work for the Local School District on a PT, Basis. It's going to be awhile till I can get 1, but in the Next Year I should be able to. Finally you have Logs, very important for us Woodhounds. Ron From the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY. PS-COMING ALOG GOOD BUT STILL HAVE TO WATCH IT.
As a firewood ‘hobbyist’ here in Australia, my dream has always been to get a professional quality splitter, given the VERY high AUD cost of locally build stuff (which is super high quality) I’m now thinking of trying to get a 17 or 19rs shipped here. Just gotta work out the AUD to USD conversion and the shipping cost… 🤔🤔🤔 great piece of kit from Wolf Ridge MFG 👍🏼🇺🇸🇦🇺🇦🇺🇺🇸
I wish this was available 21 years ago when I was just starting in the firewood business versus the box store splitter I sold my processor this year I am out of business as of now was time to retire I did keep my box store splitter it still runs good what a old friend
Don't let the size of the 17RS fool you! Is the same frame as my 28C and THAT machine worls like no tomorrow. You shouldn't have any issues with the lower tonnage.
I know you mentioned its a home owner splitter, but you could easily split 100 cords a year with this thing in no time. I think a conveyor would help with production with it as well
@@ohiowoodburner I've honestly been contemplating selling my eastonmade ultra to get one of these, so I'm looking forward to seeing more videos of it! I've had a lot of issues with my ultra and it's been frustrating. Eastonmade has been really responsive and awesome about it though, but I definitely think I need a log lift to be more efficient
Really seems like a very good price / quality machine for private use or hobby firewood (bundles etc) processing. Great video Joe and I hope your supply will pick up very soon and you can fire up the Japa 405!
Hi Ronald - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I only have experience with vertical splitters so I am biased. If you want to accuracy in splitting there is nothing to beat a vertical splitter. That's a very nice machine! I'd suspect you're correct when you say it might be easier/quicker in big ugly stuff to just run the single vertical knife and use the fast cycle time of the cylinder to break them down to the required size. It'd be worthwhile I think for you to bear in mind the future splitting (with the Eastonmade or whatever) when you're cutting off the ugly butts of the logs to make them suitable for the Japa. Cut them at the length that's convenient for the splitter, even if that means taking two bites. It'd be much easier to do it then rather than wrestling with a big awkward piece that won't fit the splitter, and likely won't easily fit the burner either.
I had thought of that and do it from time to time but it is a long haul over to the 405 and it is an awkward lift and dump for me. Seems to stress my back and knees doing it. How have you been Ivor? Haven't heard from you in a while
Can you imagine trying to split those rounds with a maul. You wouldn't have a tooth filling left in your mouth and they still wouldn't be split. That is a powerful machine Fer sure.
Not a bad cycle time. Right close to the Eastonmade ultra and will give the ultra a run for its money with the log lift which I'd rather have than an hydraulic adjustable knife.. Boy if that is anywhere close to the price of the Eastonmade ultra there is some serious competition afoot. Speed wise they look the same, but you get the log lift. I don’t have an adjustable wedge and setting the height to split a perfect size on the bottom is key. Then resplit the top pieces again to size.
Joe, this machine is loud and weak. I feel the Super Split is far better for small wood processing. Thanks for your contribution to firewood processing.
A guy needs a good small 028 stihl chain saw and a preacher stick 16" long to keep a man's stack copasetic people want to buy even wood not vary length
That was some fugly wood for a 4way. That machine comes 2 ways. Log lift or auto cycle. It would be a hard choice between that and the ultra from Eastonmade.
You should see the size of rounds the little 17RS can split with the single wedge. It can probably split a knotty 24in oak just as easily as my Wolfe Ridge 28C.
Sure if you have a tractor etc. I use my stand up in the woods. Just for home heating. If you need this much woid for winter. Might at well burn your pos r 15 house.
Looking to replace my BRAND NEW ULTRA with this. The Eastonmade ULTRA's piece of crap Briggs Vanguard has been down 3 times now (2 ignition coils and probably same for the 3rd time now) and am over it! Sad thing is I ordered the ULTRA with a Honda and showed up with a Briggs and nothing but problems. I bet I only have 20 or so cords through it and its cost me about 1k in lost customers and time so looking at this with the Honda.

Good Morning Joe- Wolfe Ridge definitely makes great products. Most people typically operate the splitter on the opposite side of the log lift.

A guy needs a good small 028 stihl chain saw and a preacher stick 16" long to keep a man's stack copasetic people want to buy even wood not vary length
That was some fugly wood for a 4way. That machine comes 2 ways. Log lift or auto cycle. It would be a hard choice between that and the ultra from Eastonmade.
sure adds some choices for the consumer!
It is designed to resplit wood not bust open gnarly rounds 😂
Not sure what video you just watched Jason
You should see the size of rounds the little 17RS can split with the single wedge. It can probably split a knotty 24in oak just as easily as my Wolfe Ridge 28C.
One of your sterling qualities is you split wood and not hairs. Seems to be a good machine if one is not fixated on perfect, but good enough.
Thanks Tom. I try to do my reviews on the practical side. I am not into numbers and decimal points!
You can keep it.
Those were some nasty knotty pieces. The splitter seemed to handle them OK.
Sure if you have a tractor etc. I use my stand up in the woods. Just for home heating. If you need this much woid for winter. Might at well burn your pos r 15 house.
$6000? I gave $1000 for my champion 27ton with 11 second cycle time. That log lift looked like it was basically in your way.
Wheelbarrel? Wheelbarrow
I'll call it what I want...but if you are interested here is the story behind it

What I'm willing to pay and what I'm able to pay are two completely different things that have nothing in common...
Saying this is a competitively priced splitter without giving the price range, please give a price range
I provided the link that has the price
You ca lift more than one log try five or more at a time.
load as many logs on lift arm, stand on other side. BACK TO WORK! 😕
I think I saw you sweat
Wait until Sunday's vid. Ugh
