Oh this is so sad. She seemed like a genuinely kind and lovely young lady. It’s terrible that her killer got away with this. Why did no one suspect Mr Greenwood’s friend? The one who “found” the letter…. If only what was believed about the eyes reflecting the last thing she saw, were true. RIP Sarah Jane Roberts. Thank you for sharing this one BC.
It was obviously the business partner who "found" the letter. He knew the household situation and wanted the only "threat" of the house gone so he could kill what he couldn't have.
The business partner was probably very wealthy and in those days wealthy people got away with allot of things. The police would have seen him as a respectable member of society
I think the guy that visited and found the letter, was the one who delivered it. It seemed quite coincidental. Then if he asked her if it was from a suitor.... I think he wanted her and she turned down his advances. There is no Mr. Wilson. I watch tooooo much murder and mayhem, lol!!! Thank BC as always ❤
@Sheila Young, I thought that was odd as well for him to say something like that. The case would've been solved if they heard what Mary Jane was murmuring before losing consciousness.
This is such a sad case. It was extremely brave of Mrs Greenwood to go downstairs like that. What an awful shock, especially as she seemed fond of Mary Jane. I would like to know how much money the pair of suspects had on them at the time they were stopped in Plymouth, and the cost of their fare to Australia if it had already been paid. It seems just possible to me that one or both were paid for the deed. Mr Greenwood's business partner would be of interest to me. He knew one of the men, that the parcel of land mentioned was owned by Mr Greenwood, and it was he that found that dodgy letter and handed it to Mary Jane. Perhaps he had been giving her unwanted attention, or he believed she had overheard something unfavourable? There are many reasons, and many other willing but rejected suitors. As for the weapon, a man's walking stick, so fashionable at that time, with a heavy metal top, may easily have been sufficient. No one would have thought twice of a man carry one, and the darkness would hide any blood stains on the clothing. It is so sad that the case was never solved, especially for Mr Greenwood, and Mary Jane's family. Fabulous and compelling work as always Brief Case! 🙂
Yes, the partner, William Cooper, should have been closely examined. The suspect had very particular knowledge of the household and its habits. The contradiction in the letter (claiming ignorance of the address it was hand delivered to), and the fact that it was "discovered" in Cooper's presence, is very suspicious. I would suggest that the property was just a clumsy ruse to get Mr. Greenwood out of the house so the killer could be alone with Sarah Jane. She would likely not have admitted a casual visitor, especially not a young suitor, but might have welcomed Mr. Cooper without question. This would also explain why there was no initial commotion when the visitor came in. The struggle might have ensued after he made his unwelcome advances.
@Anna Gettings, You are on point about the walking stick! I didn't think of that and neither did the police. That's why the weapon wasn't found...the murderer took it with him, you would be a great detective, right up there with Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downing, Jr. version😁) I was suspicious of the business partner too, the way he alluded to a letter from an admirer. A "respectable gentleman" would not have said something like that to the "hired help" back in Victorian Era.
I agree with some other commentators here that Mr. Cooper should have been questioned more closely. The fact the letter was "found" while he was there is suspicious, and there is that point when Mrs. Greenwood thought that she heard two people downstairs. Sarah quietly admitting Mr. Cooper, a man she knew, perhaps? He could have said that he was looking for Mr. Greenwood, and when told that he was out, Cooper said that he could wait for him. Perfectly innocent. Another commentator suggested that a walking stick, common in that era, was the murder weapon. A lot of those sticks were designed to be weapons as well as fashion statements.
Thanks B C for this horrific case, this sweet young lady was so loved by this family they couldn’t get over the pain of it!!! Thanks again B C for your awesomeness!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Heartbreaking. To have led such a short life and be hardworking, simplistic yet dutiful, the demise of a lovely young woman left still such an impression upon death. ♥️

Another sad and intriguing case. Poor Mary Jane.. Fascinating how they believed the eyes "recorded" the last image seen before death! Great job as always, B💼 Thank you.. 👍
@Ekaterina Kozhevnikova I am me but I read where some comments mentioned Mary Jane. I actually went back to reread the transcript. I thought I had missed something.😊
Interesting that they would think back then that your eyes were sort of like a camera. That your eyes could record a final image. Maybe this belief had something to do with people thinking the eyes are the windows to the soul.
There was an experiment conducted where a rabbit was forced to stare at a simple image for a cruelly long time. It was then killed and it's retinas examined. The experimenter claimed that the image was recorded on the retina but the evidence was dubious and the effect was never replicated. Poor bunny.
When you said the surgeon just cradled her in his arms, I realized how hard and helpless and frustrating it must have been to be a doctor back then, being able to do so little to help a lot of people. At this point in time, medicine had already come so far throughout history, but still so far behind now. Makes me happy to be alive now. I just turned 40yrs old, even just 150yrs ago, I'd be nearing the end of my life! It seems like a lot of doctors in the past could only provide comfort care a lot of the time, sad. This poor young girl didn't deserve this. She probably was as pure as she seemed. So sorry for her.
Exactly lol. Social status did matter a lot back then, but even still, sometimes there wasn't much they could do. I would probably be dead lol. These older stories fascinate me. Good video.
@@MariaAbrams agree that these genuine doctors and nurses of the past were absolute heroes as in such life threatening situations I imagine all they could do was comfort the patient with both knowing there was no hope of saving their life 😢
I bet the Mrs. of the house felt so bad for forcing her husband to go when he did not want to leave. She died shortly there after of grief. She honestly loved the girl 😭
First off, she didn't force him. She just said what if the guy gives you a good offer. And he thought about it and then agreed with her. Why should she feel badly about that??

Only God and Sarah and the business partner know what happened and I believe he's 1000 percent quilty he may have even committed the horrible unthinkable crime himself! I also believe he was writing her those letters that mysteriously disappeared maybe he wanted those back so his wife wouldn't find out or maybe she threatened to expose him! So many unanswered questions. Once again great job BC.keep them coming.

This was an incredibly sad case for all those who knew Sarah Jane Robert's and worth not only a listen, but comment and "Like" as well. As usual, great job, BC! 🙂 Psst....could it have been Mr Greenwiod's partner who may have been rejected by Sarah Jane and was, in fact the author of the "mysterious letter" shoved under the 🚪 of the residence?
This is a heartbreaking case! Poor Sarah, she seemed such a lovely young woman with so much ahead of her. Mrs. Greenwood was undoubtedly very fond of her to brave the stairs and possible intruders. She’s a victim as well to the sots responsible. Mr. Greenwood must have been beside himself to have left them and lost them in such succession. His business partner needed to be looked at much more thoroughly, but then again perhaps the police didn’t know the full details of Sarah discovering the letter to begin with. God knows who committed this wretched crime and has handed out his judgement. Cheers BC, for keeping them in our memories and showing such respect to them. I suspect the business partner of Mr Greenwood would have used Sarah Jane as a "pawn". I think with the maid dead and the wife ill (would soon die and she did) Mr Greenwood would sell his home and piece of land and move away sad and distraught man, never suspecting who killed the maid. You always have to beware of "business partners". Poor innocent girl she let her murderer in the house never had a chance. RIP Sarah Jane Roberts. Have a good week BC and friends.
Such a tragic case! Too bad there wasn't fingerprint technology then (I believe it would be several decades later). Luckily, Mrs. Greenwood wasn't murdered! The letter was definitely a lure to get Mr. Greenwood from the home. Mary Jane obviously knew who it was to let him in, and when she asked him to leave, he killed her. I believe the person wanted to take advantage of Mary Jane with her employer out the house. Enthralling narration as usual. Look forward to your next installment, Brief Case!❤
As u say, fingerprints tech wasn't really known then. But I watched a Bonanza episode recently where one of the boys was accused of murder & Hop Sing explained about all prints being different.Something the Chinese had known about for centuries.
Brief, you are beginning this story with the innocent one. Not the one who committed the crime. To me, this is another way you keep telling interesting stories. I need to pay attention to your story telling to comprehend the whole of what you are saying. Good stuff. Thanks

👋🏻 Hello good morning! Thanks for the upload! I really enjoy watching your videos. This is sooo very interesting to hear of cases from the past. I really like hearing about real history.
Poor darling! Sarah Jane must have felt safe and contented in her position at the house with the Greenwoods. She did a great job defending herself against the assailant, and I wonder how all of us would have managed, especially in an 1880s corset and with a tight bodice and sleeves, both of which restricted movement. I think the hand delivered letter was a ruse. It's sad that the murderer got away with it, and Mrs Greenwood's death is an example of how evil actions have so many corollary effects. Mr Greenwood was shattered too, as he couldn't live in his house anymore. Very well done BC, and a well researched picture montage which kept my eyes glued to the screen. Thank you.

It is interesting isn't it? That men of science believed an old superstition to the extent of using a modern method to use it as evidence is bizarre.
There was an experiment conducted where a rabbit was forced to stare at a simple image for a cruelly long time. It was then killed and it's retinas examined. The experimenter claimed that the image was recorded on the retina but the evidence was dubious and the effect was never replicated.

Good morning! ☕️
I really appreciate all the time that is put in to Brief Case ..the cases may be sad et heart breaking..but their stories should be told et remembered..thank you
Thankyou
I suspect the business partner of Mr Greenwood would have used Sarah Jane as a "pawn". I think with the maid dead and the wife ill (would soon die and she did) Mr Greenwood would sell his home and piece of land and move away sad and distraught man, never suspecting who killed the maid. You always have to beware of "business partners". Poor innocent girl she let her murderer in the house never had a chance. RIP Sarah Jane Roberts. Have a good week BC and friends.
Good morning I always look forward to your videos you post! So well done! ❤️
Thank you so much!
Thanks Vanessa :)
Good stuff. Thanks
Thankyou :)
Love it!! Thanks for the great content!
Thankyou
What a interesting case! Thanks for sharing!👍
Thank you for this interesting, yet so tragic case.
I feel a bit guilty for enjoying my Monday morning true crime and history lessons with BC when the stories are usually so tragic. But I enjoy them nonetheless. Thanks BC🖤

Dude, ask people to check if they're still subscribed. I was subscribed to your channel, but I hadn't watched a video from you in months, so when I get this video recommended I thought you weren't posting as often, but it turn out TH-cam had unsubscribed me. At least I have a lot of content from you to catch on.
Thanks I will do that
Another great one BC !:-)
💜🙏⚡️
Thanks for listening
The way you say "Mr. Cooper" is exactly how I say it whenever I see the name on caller ID. (Mr. Cooper is the name of a mortgage company)
So sad that the case was never solved.
RIP sweet Sarah Jane. 🙏💙
Thank you, Brief Case for another excellent video about some interesting true crime from the past. Every video is perfect to listen to after a nightshift or just relaxing on one of my days off. 💯💯

Thanks for watching
Good morning, BC.... it's so frustrating that she never got justice.....
I'm extremely impressed with your Channel, keep up the good work & I will Like every video I watch!!
Thankyou so much
Poor darling!
Thank you.
Thanks Caroline
