At least it's nice to know Maria had a loving father and stepmother for a change. I imagine not many parents (let alone step-parents) would have been so compassionate with a daughter who had given birth to three illeggitimate children. Instead, they not only cared for her while she was living with them, but worried for her when she disappeared and required justice for her when she was dead.

There is actually a theory that the step-mother had a part in Maria's death. The step-mother, Ann, was only a year or two older than Maria, and William had already proved he didn't live by quite the same moral code as most people - such as sleeping with an unmarried woman - so having an adulterous affair with Ann isn't too much of a stretch. The timeline is just a little suspect, if you know the facts. Such as, Ann's dreams of Maria coming to her and saying she was murdered, started only a few days after Corder got married Mary Moore. Maria was also considerate enough to point out to Ann which part of the barn she was buried in, so Ann could tell Maria's father where to dig.
The theory goes along the lines of:
William was having a relationship with step-mother AND step-daughter, step-daughter was putting the pressure on William for marriage, so step-mother and William came up with a plan to get rid of an increasingly dangerous loose end, Maria.
After a suitable amount of time, either William would move back and they can continue their affair, OR Ann would run off with William.
When she found out William had got married, and obviously had no intention of coming for her, Ann found a way to reveal the truth, without revealing how she really knew what happened, or her part in the crime, even if it was just fore-knowledge, compliance and silence.

Maria was the cousin of my 3rd great grandmother. During the trial the pathologist caused a sensation by producing Maria's head from a bag in order to show the court her injuries. It was a smaller world back then. People didn't travel as much generally and most stayed in the same place all their lives unless they were in trouble or had business dealings. There wasn't all the means of just picking up and traveling far without great expense, there wasn't communication besides letters generally speaking. So unless you actually made it big, or the opposite, became notorious, most people had no clue who you were, if you were married or unmarried, or your business. People could reinvent themselves over and over. They would carry business cards they had made up, or introduce themselves and most people took you at your word and a handshake. Not so today...

Maria was very lucky to have a caring and loving father. Normally the parents would have cut her off, especially after having three illegitimate babies. You really didn’t have a hope if you were very poor, or your family were not doing a ‘reputable’ job. Surely you’d have thought Maria’s father would have scared off the brothers, for not wanting anybody to know they were courting?? I find that strange. Hopefully Maria was reunited with her babies in death. Such a sad story. Thank you, I enjoy these old trials, you learn something through these. 💖

There is a theory that the dreams were fabricated. The step-mother Ann was only a few years older than Maria, so people believe William Corder was having an affair with Ann too, and together they decided to get to get rid of Maria, so they could continue their affair, or Ann could run away and be with him. Ann's dreams started within days of William Corder marrying Mary Moore, coincidence? And in her 'dreams', Maria points out the spot she is buried, so Ann knows where to tell her husband to dig. Was this Ann's way of getting back at a lover who spurned and abandoned her, without admitting to her own part, and guilt, in the crime?

Poor thing, she had such misguided choices in men and made mistakes she didn't seem to learn from. Another greatly sad story that made my heart sad for her circumstances in those days! Imagine telling someone she would be prosecuted for her immorality that was a total lie, just to plan her murder for his convenience. Then to continue to lie to her family is sick and evil, and stealing the money. Her "suicide" didn't explain the strangulation or stabbing marks. The vast majority of men then and today would look upon a woman with three illegitimate children as something other than potential wife material. It does not suggest a person of great thoughtfulness or responsibility, if they have done the same thing 3 times. If we may assume that the intercourse that produced these children was consensual, then surely Maria has to be held accountable for her decisions; to do otherwise is to suggest she should not be held to the standard of an adult.

You've done a cracking job researching and presenting this case BC, so many details that I hadn't heard before.
    Thank you.
This is one of the worst love fraud cases that we've heard of, and it's also very modern.
I heard of a similar case in the US that occurred a year or two ago, where a man murdered his estranged wife and stole her mobile phone. With it he sent text messages to her parents and friends pretending to be her, saying that she'd been taken to hospital with Covid, and was in ICU.
Upon investigation by her loved ones, the hospital had no record of her admission, and police found evidence of a clean up at her house using copious amounts of bleach in the garage.
Her body was found (I can't remember where) and her husband was now on the run.
The police found a huge knife under the seat of his car, with his wife's blood on it, so he was convicted of her murder.
Poor Maria. She was a young woman like many of our ancestors, at risk of being taken advantage of by men of a greater social standing, when marriage was the only career path for girls to aspire to.
She would have lived within a small social circle, and lived within a small geographical area, as many generations before her had done too.
Meeting an attractive single man would have made it difficult for a girl to not get swept away by passion, especially if he was manipulative.

I think we often know certain things subconsciously, but our brain won't let that knowledge surface - because it's painful, or embarrassing, or scary. No, they couldn't be prosecuted for having an illegitimate child. The courts would have been pretty busy otherwise - there were plenty of children born out of wedlock! In England at that time there was nothing official done to unmarried mothers. The children could even be baptised (although in the register it will note that the child was illegitimate). If the mother was unable to care for her child she could apply for parish relief, which was a form of charity given out by the local church. Soon after Maria's death, a national poor law was introduced, and this pushed many people into the workhouses.

I watch youtube all the time then it got to the point of "pay for this, pay for that..." Nope. TH-cam's supposed to be a channel where you can make comments if the narrator allows. They bullied a lot of channels off. So I am super happy to see/hear one of my favorite channels BRIEF CASE is still going strong!!

It may well be one of the best known true crime stories in Britain but it's a new one on me.
Talk about a bit of everything from the poor, doomed heroine to the supernatural tip off. And on to the last minute confession and spiritual rebirth before William is hung up to dry and posthumously drawn for public display (nice touch btw. It shows initiative).

What a tragic life for poor Maria... And to think that unwed mothers could be prosecuted by justice. And what about the father, then ? They had all the pleasure, but no pain. I am also shocked by public exécutions, but these were hard times. But I think laws have changed, but not human nature : I guess that many people would still enjoy going to see a hanging if that were possible. Well, maybe I am too pessimistic !

She had three of the most "despicable" men including two brothers in her life, who obviously didn't care about her or the children she had by them. Finally, the man that murdered her was put to death for this "heinous" crime. I'm curious as to what happened to her surviving child? Great investigating and presentation, as always.
