This was another sad, but fascinating case. Poor girl. Your research is so thorough and empathetic without sensationalism. And now I want to read the novel loosely based on her life. Thanks again BC.
This was a very interesting and intriguing story about, Mary Rogers aka the cigar girl. There's a lot of questions that the police probably bypassed about her "horrific," murder, due to being understaffed. Who was the last person she was seen with, where she disappeared the first time, rejected suitors, death bed confession of the woman she once worked for? Great investigating, presentation, historical information, as always.
Maybe the deathbed confession was because she knew or believed that one of her sons were responsible? Great choice of a fascinating, yet frustrating case!
That is my thinking. Either that, or the guilty party was more well-to-do and offered her money to tell the lie, so she did to help her family financially.
Coincidence..I was just watching a video about Madame Restell on Forgotten Lives channel just a few hours ago.. Another fascinating bit of history there
What a sad thing to happen to this beautiful young woman. It's sad that the person who murdered Mary was never found. Thank you Brief Case for another incredible episode.
The saddest book I ever read. I don't know about you guys, but I often wish to go back in time, not to get rich on IBM or Microsoft stock, but to save a few of these poor souls from foul play.
Can't go back. There's the old "what if you murdered your grandfather before he could reproduce" conundrum. It's a thing - I think it's called the murdered grandfather conundrum. It's just proof that we can not go back in time.
If it was possible it could affect the way we judge ppl, what if the facts got mixed up over the years and named the wrong person and you killed him/her or intervened at the wrong time and thats what actually caused the death? To many things could go wrong, perhaps its our destiny to want to help but cant?
BC does it again! I will be thinking about this poor young lady, trying to figure it out ,but there was not enough evidence or it was used poorly. So sad. Your narration and research are stellar once again. My favorite vintage crime channel and you never disappoint me. ❤️🇺🇸
Oooooo, nice twist at the end. I suspect her 'visit with an aunt' was a termination as her mother would have known if she was visiting an aunt. I love these older stories. A pretty face was one way to climb up the social ladder. What mom wouldn't want a nicer life for her dtr? Life was harsher then, and the common man's wife work very hard to maintain a house. So many sad turns to this unfortunate lady's life. Her poor mother.
There is a Lyme in Jefferson County NY. I think that is the reason for the map. It is a good map that I'd never seen before. It has no connection to the story though! 😂
"The Mystery of Marie Roget": I need to re-read that one. I have a big, beautifully-illustrated old book of Poe's stories with that one in it, and it's been a long time since I perused it. Now that I know more of the facts behind the real case, it may be a different experience.
Good morning This was a pretty sad one because there was really no justice. I don’t believe the fiancé did it I think he killed himself because he loved her so much and was very distraught over her death There were so many suspects but at the end of the day no one was ever caught. As far as the deathbed confession of the shop owner we don’t know if that’s true either Mary died a horrible horrible death and didn’t deserve that so whatever piece she didn’t get here on earth she received with God. R.I.P. Mary 🙏🏽♥️ Have a wonderful week and look forward to next Monday🌺
Excellent job again, Brief Case! I always enjoy Your Writings. This is a very sad and TRAGIC CASE!!! I don’t think that a botched termination of a pregnancy is true! I believe that the Post Morten would have shown traces and forensic evidence left behind in and on Miss, Cigar Girl. Thank You for sharing this one with Us. As usual, I look forward to seeing more of Your work next Monday. Best Wishes, Brief Case. You are SOOOOO AWESOME!!! 😊👍🏼💕❤️👋🏼
As usual, enjoyed your narration of this story. Very tragic indeed, had modern-day forensics been available, the crime would've been solved. Loved this and looking forward to more Cases. Be Safe and Enjoy your week.
Oh yes, I listened/watched Forgotten Lives story from last week. Your presentation was very well done. Not a good time to be alive if one was unmarried and with child.
Thank you BC. So sad that Marys death is so tragic. In my opinion her fiance didnt murder her but his regret is not accopanying her because of the very bad weather. Unfortunately it wasnt solve. RIP
It seems more likely that she was murdered by someone she went to meet. I’m familiar with Hoboken. That area was probably a bit remote. (I believe Stevens Institute of Technology now sits on the cliff over the cave.). It still is an odd area to walk by, although there is a park, ferry ramp and much more on that road.
I can definitely see how it makes sense that she had an abortion during the first time she went missing and there was a suicide note...her coming back unsociable and melancholic..that part makes sense...
Yes. But not that that was how she was murdered. But it could have had something to do with who ever tied her down and strangled her. You don't need to leave strangulation marks on a woman to terminate her pregnancy. And if something went wrong she would likely die of blood loss and not need strangulation to die.

Thank you for including this case. Have you read Poe the detective; the curious circumstances behind The mystery of Marie Roget by John Evangelist Walsh? If I remember correctly, Poe had to change the direction of his story as he was writing it for serialization because of new newspaper information about the Mary Rogers case.
I used to live in Hoboken, NJ. Sybil’s Cave was a Victorian era natural spa if I recall correctly. It is on the NJ side of the Hudson River facing Manhattan.

Another fascinating story ! I look forward to your tales each week. Always well documented with great visuals. Thank you ever so much for your time and considerable efforts Mr. Brief Case.
It is so infuriatingly sad that with all her injuries documented by the pathologist and cause of death being strangulation, this poor girls reputation was so sensationally brought into question during a period of time when, to society that was the most important thing. No matter a woman's status. It must have been terrible for her mother who had previously lost 3 children to then loose Mary in such a horrendous way and then her Childs name be sullied. Thank you for remembering poor Mary.
Another excellent presentation BC. As one who works n law enforcement, I must say, they did very thorough police work, especially for the era. You know Ben Franklin wrote a recipe for a cocktail for the purpose of termination.
Another awesome narration. The research as always regarding these historical cases is of high quality. BC you again have proven to many why your channel is popular for its content. Thank you BC.

Yes, but would she have gone to that part of town alone ? Or with a suitor that she rejected. The question is why she went to that area at all : an abortion, or a walk in the woods with a lover ?
I suspect she ran away to meet a man she thought was going to marry her but knew her mother would not approve. That's why she left a suicide note. I agree. If it wasn’t one of them, then someone else she knew and cared enough to try and ensure that the issue was put to rest with her death.
My thoughts too. She had been sexually assaulted & they apparently dumped her body there.
And I don´t think she was shot by accident either.
