Hello, Brief Case. It's absolutely wonderful to have another one of your interesting videos to watch today. Especially after I shoveled the driveway of snow. Now I'm warming up and are going to relax with your content. 😊
I don’t think there was much they could do I don’t think child abuse was a thing back then until the child died same with wife beating. At most sheriff would tell the victim to mind authority better and not anger the abuser.
It's always befuddled me how an adult could harm a child 😢 ... And then the mother's defense threw her own son "under the bus" saying she didn't know about it.... What a worthless woman... Poor Alice 😢 I hope she's now resting in peace. 🕊️
I can't believe they gave her poor son life in prison! He said he did it without his mother to save himself from any of her further abuse! He was extremely scared of her, and then he had to be in the carriage with Alice's dead body! Ugh! That poor kid! I hope he didn't spend his whole life in prison 'cause his mother was so abusive. That's a tragedy as well.
All of those who testified against Emeline Meaker, who had witnessed all those tortures, should have been charged with SOMETHING -- WHY DIDN'T any of them do a single thing to help that poor baby?
That was sadly normal until very recently. My mom grew up in an abusive household (in the 60s & 70s) and everyone knew. People didn't feel it was their place to interfere. Even if they did speak up, what would happen? Orphanages were overcrowded and there was no foster care system at that time.
The fact this disgusting woman would let her own son take the blame for something she did , something she forced him to help with , tells me everything I need to know about her !!! Disgusting!!!
Gotta love how an entire village can know about the abuse of a small girl yet no one steps up or says anything til AFTER the girl goes missing?? Well what good is your concern then??
You'd be surprised there's plenty.I've watched that the people knew what was going on and nobody did nothing. I don't understand it either. How people can know what child is being abused and they sit back and do nothing. They don't call anybody till after the child dies.
Good morning, Such a horrible case of child abuse and then throwing her away like garbage. I know times were different but neighbors heard the screams. Yet not one adult stepped in to do anything! No child ever deserves to be beaten and murdered. Justice was served Rest in Peace Sweet Angel 🙏🏽❤️🕊️
This was a story I've never heard before, from my home state. The grinding poverty of that era and the huge impact of the civil war were familiar themes. I'm wondering if syphilis was a factor in Emeline's extreme anger toward the little girl, as that kind of insanity is often a symptom. It was conjectured that the shared deafness between her and her husband might have been linked to that. I feel sorry for Almon who was obviously used and molded by his wicked mother.
Thanks for another great Brief Case! I think the mother was one of the narcissists like we see today who insist on testifying despite being obviously guilty. It's actually quite helpful in sealing their fate.
What a sad life that young girl endured. Thank you BC for another fascinating glimpse into history. And it's goodnight from me and goodnight from Brisbane.
I saw this earlier, but wanted to wait until I could settle in to watch. Poor Alice! Back then children were not really considered to have rights, and they were seldom believed over an adult. She was more a monster, than a mother.
I pray little Alice is resting in peace, Emeline Meaker deserves to live in eternal turmoil. Such a sad case, but I’m glad you brought it to light BC. ❤ Thank you for another video.
Poor poor Alice. This is one of those “if only ” cases: That if only one circumstance, moment, decision, action had happened, Alice might have been saved.
It's not the first time a defendant has used the ''but I've had such a harsh life'' argument to justify cruelty and murder. You'd think it would elicit empathy in them to see a child who's had a rough start in life, an urge to protect. I guess I don't get it. Thank you Brief Case.
I don't get it either, and I think it's well for us that we don't. Being able to be so cruel is twisted and shows that their mind and heart are fundamentally flawed, perhaps physically ill. Perhaps if we could understand this level of cruelty, we'd be capable of it, so let's be glad we do not.
Good morning. I am going to listen and probably get some sleep again because the narrator relaxes me even when describing the horrible things. At first I realized that women really bore heavy burdens during the civil war (it never occurred to me I feel a little sheepishly dumb that I never thought about it ) but this wife is no hero - these were her husband’s siblings! how cruel to not want to help the children no matter how hard she has had to work. I will likely fall asleep before video finishes (it’s 5am here in Southern California I’ve been up all night with my mother who is bed bound) but as a step mother myself - I just raised my step children as If they were my own. And the greatest thing my step daughter ever said to me, was that when she fell in love and got married her husband had two children and my daughter said , “I realized how difficult it was at first to be a step mother but I had a wonderful example in my own step mother (me) and I know that these kids are as much mine as they are his and I just love them as my own. I don’t see a difference between the children (her own children and his children) I just love them the way I was loved. “ 🥰 brought tears to my eyes and my heart breaks even for a child almost a century ago. Poor girl no one stepped up for her. And she was probably murdered by a bitter old woman. So sad. If I’m wrong I’ll edit later. RIP little Rose. 🌹 Thanks for a great video to play while I relax to get much needed sleep. Keep it up❤❤
We have our moments. A crazy thing happened at my father in law funeral and burial our funeral director ended up in tears crying with us and told us she works where everyday she saw grief. But what got her crying to me was astounding she said “I have never seen a family that truly loves each other the way this family does and it has touched my heart” but I had a follow-up question “you mean other families don’t? She replied “they do but they are more like actors
Hello, I do not understand this part - “they do but sometimes it’a a glaring stare as if we parked our spaceship in these when I tell then later as I go. Falling aside
@ that family is family and this evil woman coujd not see that her husband’s siblings are family as well as children and this evil woman couldn’t find any compassion in raising her husband’s young siblings (just like a step mother should ) she should have stepped up and I was super tired the winds here in California may have got me off on a tangent (because they were rattling my house all day )about raising children that don’t belong to you /that it shouldn’t matter if they are yours -// but this mother is evil in the story because as a mother your instinct is to care for children. And she killed the little girl. Awful. Sorry I was half awake trying to make a complicated point.
Hello 🤗 BC 🇦🇺 The ‘content’ in my Brief Case is always so fascinating…I think because people lived so differently back then. The pictures and descriptions are also fascinating. Great idea for a channel! 👏👏👏 I particularly love the kitchens.
Hi Brief Casers! It’s a nippy January afternoon here in Brighton, UK. What gets me about this case, is the “bystander syndrome” aspect of it, which was well presented. It’s often “someone else will deal with this”. And there were many witnesses to this child cruelty, but not so many attempts at prevention of the murder. In fact, none. Also wondered why Horace was not also arrested for being accessory to the crime? His testimony in court would certainly have made interesting listening. And it might have provided insight into the dynamics of this particular family, and why Horace did not intervene more and sooner. Was he maybe afraid the same might happen to him? It’s easy to dismiss or label a child “difficult”. A lethal foster home indeed. Fortunately, cases like this which caught public attention and outrage, would ultimately have made children’s lives easier, and later would have helped to outlaw child labour 🦋
Anosther case well done. Great stuff, BC. I will never understand how anyone can harm a child. How people don't intervene when they are aware of the abuse is also something I don't understand. Such an evil woman. RIP Alice.
This made me cry. My daughter is strong willed and adventurous. It can be difficult but no way worthy of such cruelty. That woman was evil. She took all her angry out on the innocent little girl. Was it because the little girl had joy in her eyes, because she had her whole life ahead of her, or because she did things wit merriment? I hope she is playing in the afterlife.
The husband was just as guilty for allowing this abuse to continue. He wasn't always gone from the war. This woman was horrible and should be punished. She was no way innocent!
We felt this case was settled justly.. the sorrow is all the abuse heaped upon this innocent child.. and the irony is she could have had a more peaceful life had the father simply told his wife he had made arrangements to send her to another family.. What broke our hearts was WHY did this take so long..the father should have made these arrangements as soon as it became clear the mother deeply resented the child and continuously tried.. as well as threatened.. to beat her to death..💔😭 Sad it was also that all those witnesses told of the abuse.. yet not one did anything to stop it.. as this was the norm back then..😭 We cry for that dear little girl😭 We also believe these cases where innocents are involved must be difficult for you to make videos of.. and we admire your courage in forging ahead with them💜💙 William and Jen
Thanks for the upload, Brief Case! Looking forward to this one. January 20 is National Cheese Lovers Day (gotta have a Mama Michelina's Grande one-pound box of macaroni and cheese later!), Data Innovation Day, Take A Walk Outdoors Day, National Penguin Awareness Day again, National Buttercrunch Day (gotta have some Almond Roca Dark Roca chocolate buttercrunch chocolate later!), National Disc Jockey Day, International Day of Acceptance, and Camcorder Day.
OK two spring to mind National Cheese Lovers Day and Take a Walk Outdoors day, I am always running or walking so I relate to that and love to walk anywhere, in the fields, in the streets but I do love cheese, I probably eat it far too much :( so by the smallest margin its National Cheese Lovers Day
@BriefCaseOfficial It's a bit cold here to do much outdoor walking, but the fresh air is good. I do also like cheese, but not chomping down on a block of cheese by itself.
Today it's 4 degrees F, so taking a walk outside is out for my old bones...funny that penguins have this day too 😂 I'm definitely going to enjoy some Cheddar cheese on my chicken tinga later tho 😋 👍
It's a tragic case for that poor little girl. I don't know, I'm not sided with Mrs. Meaker, but she had never been in trouble with the law before. She indeed, according to this video had been a very hard worker all her life. At 40 plus years old she no doubt was a spent woman. Certainly her husband had no right to bring the half siblings into the home without her consent. I can only imagine her anger and resentment of this being done without her say so. I'm not defending her but can understand her anger and frustration with the spirited little girl. This woman who thought all the hard work of child rearing was behind her was suddenly burdened by two more children. As Mrs. Meaker had no one else to take out her anger and frustration on (someone who couldn't fight back) she directed her attacks on the child. I do not condone what she did. But, I understand as a poor woman with limited options and resources that this could happen. While I do believe that she was the main perpetrator, I also blame her husband for putting this extra work and pressure on her of adding two more small children to the home without her consent. I blame the townspeople for their lack of intervention. Those times were very difficult and challenging for average people to make a living. Resources for children in need were also very limited. It was a tragic story not only about the little girl but also about the harsh times she lived in. I do commend the father for seeing the need to find the little girl a new place to life, but unfortunately that action came too late.
As a mother of 2 with many disabilities I can't imagine ever hurting my girls. Of course they can make me angry but no matter how much I hurt I always see my daughters as a reason to keep fighting, keep having my surgeries, and keep smiling. You never cease to amaze me with the grace and dignity you tell these heinous stories! Happy New Year to you my friend!
This still happens today. Reminds me of the Kitty Genovese case. NYC, 1960s. Her ex-boyfriend murdered her right on her doorstep at dinnertime, in full view of the neighbours who were at home at the time and heard the whole murder. The fact is that people just don't want to get involved. It is a very sad part of human nature (I am, of course, generalizing here. Not everyone is this callous.)
Good morning B.C. What an evil woman Emily and this could maybe have been prevented had her husband let her know he had found a home for Alice. Too late for the child. What a horrible was to mistreat her. Was to painful to listen, no child should be mistreated. Little Angel Alice RIP. Have a good week BC
God Bless you for bring to us, another interesting, but sad case. Horace should have discussed bringing 2 more children, his half brother and sister, but Alice was only a little girl, alone in the world! She had no say, in where she lived. Poor little Alice. I also want to thank you for your narration. I love your narration, your voice is perfect.
As far as I have found, there's no good telling of Maria Colwell's death at the hands of her guardians, here in Brighton '72 I think. I was still at school, my physics teacher was related to the family. It still retains its power to shock me, just thinking about it now. It may be one for you to consider. It lead to the dragging of childhood abuse of physical and mental kind, kicking and screaming into The 20th Century. From my point of view, as a nurse and social worker from Brighton, I don't think things have improved any, other than there being a higher awareness about it. Every so often the tabloids will cover a case salaciously, the broadsheets will ring their hands...then suddenly, nothing changes. Thank you for your unsensational telling of the poor victims stories, to quote Les Francais, "Plus ca change, plus ce meme choses." Truisms, always sound better in French!
Staggering how these people seemingly always recount THEIR bad treatment at childhood into the excuse of harming another. Many people who have REALLY had a bad childhood are sensitive to the plight of others and do not wish to harm others, especially the innocent and helpless. If this child was of such a problem, why did they not put her up for adoption or some other way to get her out of their lives, rather than the chosen act. RIP dear Alice.
These videos of child abuse is hard. I wish that back then that all the witnesses would have come forward. Sadly mental illness still exists. Good morning to you BC. Keep up the good work.
Hello BC, went to AEON Station 18 with Prasert today, it's his favourite shopping mall and my aunt from the US is here for dinner and celebrating CNY with us too!
Good morning! Hitting our polar freeze, it's 1 degrees F or -17C, with wind chills I'm not acknowledging haha. Going out to work to fight cancer at the chemo clinic.
Wow thats cold. Sounds like Canada. Propos to you for being able to leave the house. It was 33C today where I am. It's cooling down now but I still have the cooling unit on and sitting in front of it listening to BC.
Good morning BriefCase: Yes, it was the societal norms of the time. Bless that poor little baby. R.I.P. Alice. (ps. Moved to VT when I was twelve - and have lived in Montpelier, the capital, for thirty years. I go to Barre to eat sushi).
Some of the blame has to go to the father. He brought in the two orphans without consultation with his wife prior to his decision. This is like giving brand new alcohol to an otherwise unknown alcoholic. Other people saw the abuse and did nothing. Shame on them too.
Delighted to see how even in the late 18 hundreds the American judicial system was hard at work to find a just punishment for the two! Thank you, Brief Case, for posting this enlightening true crime pod! Nothing like it when it's so cold outside.
Only after Alice disappeared did the community come together to do anything for her. Perhaps if the husband had told his wife of moving Alice to a new household, this may not have happened.
First of all, I want to say that I appreciate you're featuring a case about child abuse because its vital for people to know that it exists unfortunately even today in 2025. I'm thrilled that justice was served and the perpetrator of this heinous crime received her ultimate punishment. Great investigation and presentation, as always. Take care ⚖
Hello, Brief Case. It's absolutely wonderful to have another one of your interesting videos to watch today. Especially after I shoveled the driveway of snow. Now I'm warming up and are going to relax with your content. 😊
I am so glad you can relax with the video after that shoveling!
@BriefCaseOfficial Thank you. I was able to. 😌
Happen every day in our society.
This poor, sweet, innocent little girl. So many people failed her 😢
Everyone failed her! 😭😭😭
It speaks volumes about her character that Emmeline's body was never claimed by her family after her execution. RIP Alice, you never deserved that.
Love how Briefcase carved his own niche in the true crime genre. You rock
Thanks Chris
A far superior niche in my opinion.
I agree! I love watching these older ones so much! Thank you Briefcase!❤
I'm so disgusted that so many people ignored the abuse of the child. Had they intervened, it might have ended differently.
Human nature. People just didn't care. Sickening! 😢

Good morning BriefCase, another great story. The tales involving kids always hit especially hard😔😔😔
Yes they are :(
It’s NOT a great story. It’s horrible.
There are no words for horrible cases like this. Reminds me a lot of the Sylvia Likens case.
Yup.
Except not at all the same. They were both killed and both female that is pretty much where any resemblance ends.
Good morning,
Such a horrible case of child abuse and then throwing her away like garbage. I know times were different but neighbors heard the screams. Yet not one adult stepped in to do anything! No child ever deserves to be beaten and murdered. Justice was served

This was a story I've never heard before, from my home state. The grinding poverty of that era and the huge impact of the civil war were familiar themes. I'm wondering if syphilis was a factor in Emeline's extreme anger toward the little girl, as that kind of insanity is often a symptom. So sad, child beating taken to extremes. A hard life doesn't entitle one to such cruelty. 😢

Poor Alice didn’t deserve such treatment. Why didn’t Horace intervene?? He should have consulted his wife before agreeing to take the children in.
He did, as he was arranging for Alice to live with another family. But, again, he failed to communicate with his wife. 🤦♀️
@@cassie1264I thought the same thing. Had he communicated this, maybe Alice would have made it out of the home alive. Terribly sad 😢

Good morning from Chicago all!😀☀️☺️
As a mother of 2 with many disabilities I can't imagine ever hurting my girls. Of course they can make me angry but no matter how much I hurt I always see my daughters as a reason to keep fighting, keep having my surgeries, and keep smiling. You never cease to amaze me with the grace and dignity you tell these heinous stories! Happy New Year to you my friend!
Thankyou and HNY to you Ally :)
@@BriefCaseOfficial Thanks for the heart, here is one for you ❤️ !
Mornin'. Looking forward to another great episode 👍
Thankyou :)
I wonder what would’ve Alice become had she been allowed to live.
She has the saddest face in the picture.
Good Day B.C.
Thanks again for you efforts and, fine presentation.
Thankyou Scott :)
All the witnesses and nobody intervened 😢
This still happens today. Reminds me of the Kitty Genovese case. NYC, 1960s. Her ex-boyfriend murdered her right on her doorstep at dinnertime, in full view of the neighbours who were at home at the time and heard the whole murder. The fact is that people just don't want to get involved. It is a very sad part of human nature (I am, of course, generalizing here. Not everyone is this callous.)
My heart breaks for that little girl. 💔
What a sad case B.C. I don’t know where you find these cases, but they are utterly interesting.
Thank you for all your hard work ❤ Hope you feel better soon 💕 😊
Thank you so much, I appreciate it!
Thank U Brief Case for this tragic story.
Hello B C been waiting for this.
Thank you 🎉🎉❤❤
Thanks, hope it does not dissapoint
I was prepared for an accidental death but the truth was far more cruel
This is heartbreaking. 💔
😢 That poor girl I just wish someone had stepped in. So sad, thank you BC excellent.
Her husband did arrange for Alice to go live with another family, but she was gone before the plan was enacted. 😔
Good morning!! Thank you for the video! Always good ! ❤
Thanks Jordan
These videos of child abuse is hard. I wish that back then that all the witnesses would have come forward. Sadly mental illness still exists. Good morning to you BC. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Dianne
Yay! Monday = a new BC 🎉🥰🤘🏼
Horrible treatment of children.
My God what a terrible case.
Sorry Perry :(
It is terrible 😢 Everyone stood by and let this happen.
I almost couldn't finish the video. Had to take a break. It is horrible to hear. Thank you for this. We need to remember her. I know I will😢
Good morning Brief Case.
Hi Joanne :)
Thank you Brief Case for another thoroughly enjoyable video x
Thankyou
Hello BC, went to AEON Station 18 with Prasert today, it's his favourite shopping mall and my aunt from the US is here for dinner and celebrating CNY with us too!
Great, I hope you had a good day
What a lovely child😢💔🙏
Good morning! Hitting our polar freeze, it's 1 degrees F or -17C, with wind chills I'm not acknowledging haha. Going out to work to fight cancer at the chemo clinic.
Thankyou for the amazing work you do, and I hope you stay warm
Wow thats cold. Sounds like Canada. Propos to you for being able to leave the house. It was 33C today where I am. It's cooling down now but I still have the cooling unit on and sitting in front of it listening to BC.
@@lyndamck3446Same! It’s 11.40pm and still 22C here. Going to be hot again tomorrow! 🥵
@Australian.Stories I guess that's got to be better than -17 that the OP talks about.
@@lyndamck3446Agreed! Can’t even imagine that temperature!! 🥶
Good morning BriefCase: Yes, it was the societal norms of the time.
Bless that poor little baby. R.I.P. Alice.
(ps. Moved to VT when I was twelve - and have lived in Montpelier, the capital, for thirty years. I go to Barre to eat sushi).
Its always good to get comments from local people, glad I could find a case near to you :)
@@BriefCaseOfficial Stay safe! ox
Great video as usual.
Thanks
Thanks, BC ❤😊❤
Good morning Brief Case thank you for another great one this is such a sad one why didn't anyone ever try to help the little girl 😢😢 it's not right
Only after Alice disappeared did the community come together to do anything for her.
Perhaps if the husband had told his wife of moving Alice to a new household, this may not have happened.
Good morning Good Briefcase.

💙🧡💚💚
Hello :)
Good morning Brief Case😀
Have a great day!
🔥Stay warm friends🌨❄
Thanks Nancy, 30 C here :)
Alice was betrayed by them all
Most shocking part of this is the fact that so many witnessed the cruelty of a small child yet did nothing to stop it. Shame on them all.
Happy Monday 😊
Same to you!
Take care ⚖
Also here, can't sleep.. But hooray! A story from BC!
Try to get some sleep
@ 😘you help!
Thanks so much BC!!!
Thanks for watching
Emeline's husband was an unindicted co-conspirator in this crime. He showed appallingly bad judgment in his decisions.
I agree with the final sentences.
Good morning!🌞 poor Alice 😢so sad! Emily was pure cruel evil! 👿
Emiline.."poor pitiful me. I've had a hard life. "Blah, blah, blah sick of those excuses.
How sad that just ONE DAY later, Alice might have begun to have a nice life
