Had this happen a few years ago on a 2001 Honda Rancher that I bought new. It had been starting perfectly I always had a battery maintainer hooked to it since I bought it new. One day I tried to start it, nothing it was dead no spark,battery good,etc. I worked on it off and on for a week with no luck. Finally I found the culprit,it was a main frame ground wire rear right tire that was corroded and not making good ground contact. I cleaned that up,put a dab of grease on the connections and it fired right up and ran fine until the day I sold it 3 or 4 years later. My Rancher had never seen any mud or water, so yes just the humidity in the air over time can cause connections to surface rust up and cause you a headache. Also even if a battery is showing good voltage I also would have it load tested, that can also be the culprit at times.

If you got a Kawasaki Bayou 300 like me all of this troubleshooting done above I had done but still missing out on something ! My quad would turn on with all the lights and everything, and when i pressed the starter button it would start 1 times out of 10 ! And when it got really cold out it would not start at all except with the pull cord... Then after some digging on the Bayou microfiche I found there was a cylinder relay under the quad just above the muffler hanging on the ATV... I got that replaced and BAM my ATV starts like a new one now !

This is an excellent video. For my own future reference: 1. Check the battery. 2. This little junction right here. Fuses. 3. Jump the solenoid directly from the battery. 4. You probably have a bad starter.
Just because the solenoid clicks doesn't mean the starter is bad I have seen lots of solenoid click and the contacts inside be burnt up so always check your starter to your positive to see if your starter still turns over.
@@carterfunair2999 sometimes you can push start button and it will click n nothing happens, in that case try pushing start button and hitting starter solenoid with something to jar it, sometimes it will crank with a jolt, but if not then cross the starter contacts to make sure it cranks, if after all that, then replace the solenoid.
Thanks for the reply...was turning over and everything seemed fine...i changed out starter clutch and it fixed the starting issue....guess it was worn and wouldn't let the starter spin fast enough to make machine fire off electric starter
Buddy got a cheap Chinese 4 wheeler for his 6 year old son to ride. It won’t start. Lights turn on and battery seems fine. I will check the starter next and any fuses. Hope it works.
I have a 03 recon Trx 250 and I have no issue starting and running while being pulled but will not crank when tried by the cable or the button and then there no throttle response because it also shuts off in neutral anyway you could guid me through awesome vids pretty direct and helpful
Oh I found this out my self, if the motor turns over and doesn’t start check the wire that goes down below your shifter and make sure it’s connected, I’ve wasted over 300$ on battery and starters, but It was a little wire disconnected
Yes everything on the carb is fine. I have even took a carb off a tuning machine with the same results. I have also tried a new cdi and coil and air filter.
+Brandon B What does the spark plug look like? Plus make sure you don't have a intake leak. Quick way to do that is to spray the intake boot with some carb cleaner as it's running at idle. If its revs up, your intake boot is cracked.
+Partzilla.com cleaned my carb and was so excited to ride i forgot to tighten intake clamp and had same problem scratched my head for a second and was oh im dumb haha live n learn
Ok, here's a project for you to figure out because I don't understand this problem at all. I have a 05 trx350fm Honda Rancher 4x4. So here's the problem, the atv had been setting outside for at least 4 yrs. so I got it and cleaned it up and replace a lot of things on it, but when I rebuilt the starter and put it in the 4 wheeler, well when I try to crank it I can here the starter but it's not turning the motor over. So I took it back off and put my finger in the starter hole and could fell a gear. The gear will turn clock wise easily (clockwise looking at it from the back of the motor). So I took a digital caliper and mic the distance from the gear to where the starter would be if mounted, I also mic the length of the starter gear and the starter gear is plenty long enough to reach the gear inside of the motor. So I'm at a point to where I have no idea what to do. I would certainly appreciate any bodies help with this. Thanks.
I have replaced starter solenoids that have functioning relay coils but the high current contacts are burned. You can easily test the starter at this point by jumping battery positive to the starter lead post of the starter solenoid. Also a test light to check if voltage is making it from the start button to the relay coil of the start solenoid would be advisable. Initial steps for checking battery and fuse spot on.
I'm not getting spark on my 1997 Honda Foreman 400 I replaced the stator, pulse coil,ignition switch,ignition coil,cdi box,regulator,spark plug,battery what else could be wrong I hope its not the timmimg when I'm at top dead center the piston comes to the top of the cylinder when T Mark is shown in timmimg hole I'm getting signal from the stator to the pulse coil into the ICM
Wow, James. It looks like you have covered 90% of your electrical system. I'm assuming fuses were checked, relay switch. Did you test your kill switch? It could be a shorted wire somewhere.
Partzilla what's so weird about that is im lights along with the low beams it does turn over. the kill switch is my next thing to replace I think that could be my problem only thing I didn't replace yet was the ignition coil cap which I'll be getting that today if it still doesn't get spark then I'll replaced the Killswitch let you know how that goes

Great video !! What if you have a 2001 Yamaha kodiak the neutral light indicator light and a new push button ignition switch and the only time the headlights and neutral light indication work is when you jump the solenoid. Starter works and it runs but only by jumping

Ok John. Ive tried everything on my 2007 420. It will turn over but no fire. I dont hear the click you speak of but when it first tore up it did click. Oh and the mainyenance light doesnt come on at all ehen i turn key. I have replaced battery, starter solenoid, ignition switch, fuses. It had fire going to ignition coil but not coming out. Have a 500 04 foreman rubicon. When I connect battery neutral light comes on before I turn on ignition , after a few attempts to start , neutral light goes all together, now there its as if there is no power at all. Battery is good. Machine has been sitting for about ten years. Have done a lot of replacements trying to revive.

When I do a cold start I have to give my honda TRX 400ex gas a few times to get it going I already checked the carburetor it wasn't dirty except for the jets so I had that clean out and it still doing the same but when I give it gas I hear a lil tic when it first starts up. I did a motor swap on my honda recon. everything worked properly with the old motor, just replaced it bc Crack in crank case. With the new motor, I now have both the neutral and reverse light on at the same time. The motor will turn over but will not start.
Hi Allison, best random internet diagnosis? Sounds like there is an electrical short. Either a wire got crossed or pinched somewhere when the motor went back in. That would be the starting point, recheck all your wires. Hope this helps.
I got my wife a 2008 trx400ex. split the case fixed 2nd gear. put it all back together. well we went riding this weekend. was fine but clutch and yes it was brand new started slipping and quad just stopped pulling. got it back to camp next morning wake up go to crank it crunk fine tried to just load it on trailer motor died won't start at all doesn't even turn over. would the clutch going out make it do nothing. i watched your vids and done alot if the work myself so thanks any advice would be a great help

great video. I have a Taotao 250 that sounds terrible when trying to start. I appears to be the starter but not sure. It sounds like starter is kicking in & out. If engine is hot it doesn't make the sound near as bad. I'v pulled starter and checked the starter gear and the other gears but no issues like broken teeth. I have a 2009 honda rincon 680 fuel injected, will not start, replaced everything, fuel pump, fuel relay, air filter, spark plug. when i replaced the fuel pump assembly ran for a little while and then stopped again, would star and run poorly intermittantly, I have even drained and put fresh fuel in it. If i take the air filter of and use a little starting fluid it runs perfectly. I'm thinking I may have gotten a defective fuel pump, I have a new fuel pump rebuild kit coming today, going to give that a try. What are your thoughts on this matter? Tony Kucherry

. I have a 2002 attic cat 250 I’m trying to figure out. I had a local shop rebuild the carburetor on it and it was running great until the battery fell out of it. I put a new battery in it and it turns it over fine I took the spark plug out and check for spark the old fashioned way by putting the spark plug against the engine and saw good spark. I only used starting fluid to see if it would fire up for a few seconds but it would not fire a bit The reason I didn’t use gas is when I put a little gas in the tank I developed a leak around where u cut the gas on and off so I figured I could just use starting fluid to see if it would fire. I really thought it would fire for a second of two but nothing at all. But to recap. It was running fine until the battery fell out of it. I don’t Konto much about atv’s but I’m familiar with lawn mowers. What do u think I should check first,second,third. Etc. lol. I’m thinking maybe if I fix the gas leak it developed by sitting at least a year since the carb was rebuilt and putting new fresh gas in the carb and trying that Any advice will be greatly appreciated
We will add it to the list! You can get to the spark plug by removing the side panel on the right side. It's at the top of the motor. (If my memory serves)
Thanks for the video!.....I have an 08 Can-Am Outlander 500 XT. It has had intermittent issues with what made me think the battery was dead. Key on, no lights but hear fuel pump...won't crank over. Jumping solenoid turns the starter over but even with key on, it won't start and again the dash lights, headlights, etc don't come on and it won't crank over unless jumping solenoid and even then it won't start, just cranks over? I plan on removing wires, cleaning terminals up and maybe putting a lil grease on terminals. I'm not getting acc voltage to the solenoid. Hand park brake is on, I pressed the pedal brake, kill switch is in on position, and tried in Park & Neutral with same result. Any info would GREATLY be helpful. Thanks in advance.
My 97 yamaha turns over but doesn't got a new carburetor, adjusted it 9 way to sunday but couldn't get the spudder out so i took it back off to make sure the floats were acting right only to find the air flow needle tip had broke and was stuck in the hole.so i got it out and put the old one back in and a little shorter but had a chance to see if it does because it won't fire just turn over. Oh and the plug got stripped going back in now it takes a 14/1.25 instead of the original 12/1.25 would this ccx ause it to not fire? Thank for your help
I have a 2004 yamaha raptor 660r and I'm having a problem starting it. I have a brand new battery for it. but when I go to start it the solenoid only buzzes, not just a click and my oil light comes on. I was also riding it and when I slowed down it shut off on it's own too. I just put a new spark plug it in too and I'm not sure what to do to fix it or what I need to replace on it. we have two quad bikes that make a clicking sound when you press the electric switch that both don't turn on with the electric start and we have been starting it with the pull start and kick start please what part do I need to replace there both making a clicking sound!
Check the connections to your solenoid. Ignition. start switch. If it's not even clicking, you'll have to test along the line to see where the power drops out.
i have a 1995 kawasaki kef300 lakota. check the solenoid as u did and it cranked over hooked the solenoid back up but four wheeler wouldnt start my four wheeler also has pull start used it and it started why
Mr John, My 1999 honda 400ex wont start. I think it has to do with electrical, bc no green light, no nothin. I got a bunch of wires not hooked up to anything and wandering if it would be better getting a new wiring harness and starting from scratch. Any input would help tremendously. Thanks Stimpy willis

If you're getting fuel, you need to check for spark. Check your plug, fuses, test the output of your rectifier.

Hello David. If You are not getting fire to the coil, it may be a issue with the cdi box.
That was a good video I just traded my sled for one and the fuses u showed that was a promblum when I change it I hop that was the issue

I have a 450r and I have the first problem with the fuse but I can’t seem to find it. Do you know where the fuse he showed is?
really handy vid, my quad is got one click when I go to start, (like a thump) battery life is good and new solenoid I’ve put on. Will this make it the starter motor that’s wrong or a earth wire?
I haven't replaced my solenoid yet I heard that could cause a no spark issue as well but still able to crank the engine
The starter solenoid doesn't create spark for the motor, it just engages the starter.

I have a 98 350 warrior just rebuilt it and plugged all right wires in but I told my dad that the clutches have slots and supposed to line up and now I have no neutral light and the starter clicks without pulling in the clutch while starting it so what is my problem

best thing to do is to get a recording camera and record every moment of disassembly .
do try and take the whole gear assembly out in one shot, because some of the gears are same size but different pitch of thread.

2004 Yamaha 350 Warrior starter solenoid, starter relay and DCI all new, still no crank no crank. Signal from ignition switch, clutch and push start button are all present.

Ok John. Ive tried everything on my 2007 420. It will turn over but no fire. I dont hear the click you speak of but when it first tore up it did click. Oh and the mainyenance light doesnt come on at all ehen i turn key. I have replaced battery, starter solenoid, ignition switch, fuses. It had fire going to ignition coil but not coming out. This is my first atv and im just stumped. Are there any fuses that could be hiding somewhere that i havrnt found. Thanks John. I watch you all the time and desperately need help . I called customer service and asked if i bought parts could they send you with the part to help me lolol. Of course she laughed and kindly said no.. lol. Any help is appreciated

Partzilla, everything is good my fourwheeler is turning over and it has spark but it just will no crank up, it acts like its trying but will not, could it be my cdi box?
O2 400ex.. checked everything like you did all is fine! Checked all wires an everything is connected! Even hit some with contact cleaner! Any more ideas as far as next step! No neutral light no head lights nothing to the push start

Hi I have a 99 banshee, and sometimes it runs fast as hell and other times it just kinda seems slower, the carbs are clean, and everyone else is clean, it usually starts 2-3 kicks.

Have a 500 04 foreman rubicon. When I connect battery neutral light comes on before I turn on ignition , after a few attempts to start , neutral light goes all together, now there its as if there is no power at all. Battery is good. Machine has been sitting for about ten years. Have done a lot of replacements trying to revive.

Hey how you doing I got a quick question for ya. When I do a cold start I have to give my honda TRX 400ex gas a few times to get it going I already checked the carburetor it wasn't dirty except for the jets so I had that clean out and it still doing the same but when I give it gas I hear a lil tic when it first starts up. Do u think a need a new accelerations kit

I did a motor swap on my honda recon. everything worked properly with the old motor, just replaced it bc Crack in crank case. With the new motor, I now have both the neutral and reverse light on at the same time. The motor will turn over but will not start.
Hi Allison, best random internet diagnosis? Sounds like there is an electrical short. Either a wire got crossed or pinched somewhere when the motor went back in. That would be the starting point, recheck all your wires. Hope this helps.

I got my wife a 2008 trx400ex. split the case fixed 2nd gear. put it all back together. well we went riding this weekend. was fine but clutch and yes it was brand new started slipping and quad just stopped pulling. got it back to camp next morning wake up go to crank it crunk fine tried to just load it on trailer motor died won't start at all doesn't even turn over. would the clutch going out make it do nothing. i watched your vids and done alot if the work myself so thanks any advice would be a great help

I have a Taotao 250 that sounds terrible when trying to start. I appears to be the starter but not sure. It sounds like starter is kicking in & out. If engine is hot it doesn't make the sound near as bad. I'v pulled starter and checked the starter gear and the other gears but no issues like broken teeth. Could be a few things, have you checked the flywheel and one way bearing?

I have a 2009 honda rincon 680 fuel injected, will not start, replaced everything, fuel pump, fuel relay, air filter, spark plug. when i replaced the fuel pump assembly ran for a little while and then stopped again, would star and run poorly intermittantly, I have even drained and put fresh fuel in it. If i take the air filter of and use a little starting fluid it runs perfectly. I'm thinking I may have gotten a defective fuel pump, I have a new fuel pump rebuild kit coming today, going to give that a try. What are your thoughts on this matter?

Flush and replace all fluids, clean carb thoroughly, new plug and fire it up! The rest should become obvious if there is an issue.
. I have a 2002 attic cat 250 I’m trying to figure out. I had a local shop rebuild the carburetor on it and it was running great until the battery fell out of it. I put a new battery in it and it turns it over fine I took the spark plug out and check for spark the old fashioned way by putting the spark plug against the engine and saw good spark. I only used starting fluid to see if it would fire up for a few seconds but it would not fire a bit The reason I didn’t use gas is when I put a little gas in the tank I developed a leak around where u cut the gas on and off so I figured I could just use starting fluid to see if it would fire. I really thought it would fire for a second of two but nothing at all. But to recap. It was running fine until the battery fell out of it. I don’t Konto much about atv’s but I’m familiar with lawn mowers. What do u think I should check first,second,third. Etc. lol. I’m thinking maybe if I fix the gas leak it developed by sitting at least a year since the carb was rebuilt and putting new fresh gas in the carb and trying that Any advice will be greatly appreciated

We will add it to the list! You can get to the spark plug by removing the side panel on the right side. It's at the top of the motor. (If my memory serves)

Thanks for the video!.....I have an 08 Can-Am Outlander 500 XT. It has had intermittent issues with what made me think the battery was dead. Key on, no lights but hear fuel pump...won't crank over. Jumping solenoid turns the starter over but even with key on, it won't start and again the dash lights, headlights, etc don't come on and it won't crank over unless jumping solenoid and even then it won't start, just cranks over? I plan on removing wires, cleaning terminals up and maybe putting a lil grease on terminals. I'm not getting acc voltage to the solenoid. Hand park brake is on, I pressed the pedal brake, kill switch is in on position, and tried in Park & Neutral with same result. Any info would GREATLY be helpful. Thanks in advance.
My 97 yamaha turns over but doesn't got a new carburetor, adjusted it 9 way to sunday but couldn't get the spudder out so i took it back off to make sure the floats were acting right only to find the air flow needle tip had broke and was stuck in the hole.so i got it out and put the old one back in and a little shorter but had a chance to see if it does because it won't fire just turn over. Oh and the plug got stripped going back in now it takes a 14/1.25 instead of the original 12/1.25 would this ccx ause it to not fire? Thank for your help
I have a 2004 yamaha raptor 660r and I'm having a problem starting it. I have a brand new battery for it. but when I go to start it the solenoid only buzzes, not just a click and my oil light comes on. I was also riding it and when I slowed down it shut off on it's own too. I just put a new spark plug it in too and I'm not sure what to do to fix it or what I need to replace on it. we have two quad bikes that make a clicking sound when you press the electric switch that both don't turn on with the electric start and we have been starting it with the pull start and kick start please what part do I need to replace there both making a clicking sound!

Check the connections to your solenoid. Ignition. start switch. If it's not even clicking, you'll have to test along the line to see where the power drops out.
i have a 1995 kawasaki kef300 lakota. check the solenoid as u did and it cranked over hooked the solenoid back up but four wheeler wouldnt start my four wheeler also has pull start used it and it started why

My 1999 honda 400ex wont start. I think it has to do with electrical, bc no green light, no nothin. I got a bunch of wires not hooked up to anything and wandering if it would be better getting a new wiring harness and starting from scratch. Any input would help tremendously. Thanks

i replace the fuse in my 2004 250ex and it keeps blown fuses it will stay running but eat up the fuses?
If the Solenoid clicks and starter doesnt make any noise. occasionally I hear the starter make a weak turn, but nothing consistent, mainly just a click from solenoid. does this mean starter is bad? I replaced battery and checked that fuse and all is good.
hi I have a 03 Yamaha Kodiak 400 the starter relay is buzzing what do I need to do to make it stop I did some research and some people say it's the battery going dead or have a bad connection with the starter relay or it needs to be clean I checked it to see if it was clean and it was clean the fuse is still good?????
