And I have another question after I put my head gasket and all that stuff it ran just fine but it was leaking out of the head I put everything back in a new hair gaskets and everything and I want to put it back in time as pretty much like you were showing me and when I put it all together I'm getting spark and everything but it will not hit I cannot get it to start
Got a questionI have my timing chain and cam unhooked on the 2002 Honda TRX 400 when I line up the timing mark on the fly wheel the piston is all the way down no matter what stroke I’m on whenever I get the piston TDC I am no longer on the fly wheel timing mark?
Hi John, thanks for the videos the have helped a lot. I am having an issue after the rebuild and was hoping you could help. I have set the timing four times at this point and still have a no start and recently had two backfires that knocked the carburetor off the intake manifold. My issue is every time I align the lines on the cam to the block I have a good amount of play in the cam (like an eight of a turn) it was the same on the old cam and new cam. The reason I did the rebuild was to get rid of the cam chain noise with a Part # 14401-MEB-671 cam chain for a CRF 450r. I read in multiple posts that it was the best cam chain to use. Could this be the issue? I set the valve lash and replaced the coil and cdi. The fuel might be degraded but I tried staring it with staring fluid and it didn’t start. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
I have a question I have a 400 EX and I changed the headgasket on it and that's all I did I followed the video I can get the T and get the tea come up when I set the The Cam the marks like you're saying and I could see the tea but my tea is a little away from the groove in the eyesight the eyesight and up I can't get the Cam to completely play on mark's on the head just right without being awful being off a little bit I was wondering does the end of the piece on the Cam does it come off
Would this work on a 1986 Honda fourtrax 350 as well? I have a new jug and piston, head, and gasket set for it. Just doing some research before I put her back together
, thank you you ended up answering my question I had on your engine rebuild video I had a few questions about some stuff and you answered them in this video
I have a 2016 honda 500 rubicon, that will not crank. It does nothing but click. I have purchased a new battery, starter, solenoid, key switch, and bank angle sensor ( that's the code given). Nothing has worked, what do I do now? Also checked the fuses, they test good. I'm lost now.
I have an 09 400x. I have a whine coming from the motor. Research says it could be cam bearings or oil pump. How hard is it to change the cam bearings or do I need a whole new cam?
You should really put something in your last video to inform people that you have to do this before you try and start it .Hopefully I didn't damage anything trying to start it .
I wish u guys would do one on a 06 trx450er on how to put the motor in time where it needs to be and everything have a hard time with my and their isn’t any videos on you tube
My timing chain broke, yamaha Timberwolf 250. I aligned crank marks but when aligning the cam marks rotating clockwise there is movement between the lobes. Should I rotate cam CCW to align the cam marks? Thanks for your help
My lines dont line up straight to the head eather the rear is a little high or the front is. The only way to make it even is to move the F or T to the front a little. Thos also happend with a 250cc hammerhead I had.
My 400 had a bad head gasket so I replaced it , use to run fine , now it won’t stay running wants to turn in but won’t , keeps shooting load noise from muffler popping noise , keep looking and found that the decompression pin is shorter then what should be doesn’t stay out a bit shouldn’t it stick out some ? Also can feel and see the spring can this be why the bike won’t stay on or fire up ? I order a new pin and spring , just weird how it was running like that fine ? Please help
I have a 2007 Honda 400EX I was going to put a 440 big bore kit on It, put it all back together and it won't start I've watched the video how to time it and it still won't start any ideas
I have a 2006 Rancher 400 4x4.After rebuilding the top end and putting 200 miles exactly on the machine it bent a valve.i need to know what caused this.ive put 3000 dollars into this thing and cant keep throwing money at it.where should I start
This is a great video! I'm having a tough time replacing the timing chain and tensioner. Could you post a video of that on a trx400. Really want to learn how to replace! Thanks!!
hey there! I got a question, I own a 350cc Yamaha warrior y really would like to know how check or possibly set the timing by my self in case of out of T timing marks, can you help me please?
I have a 07 400ex I've messed and played with the timing it's getting a good strong spark and it's getting fuel but it won't start it'll just back fire once out the carb any idea on why it's doing that or how I can fix it
How did you mess/play with the timing? It is possible that you might have bent a valve. Do a compression test so we can see whats up. I can show you how to do that here. th-cam.com/video/ZnaR5rMtsRk/w-d-xo.html
Have 02 trx. began smoking, stalling and the exhaust got red hot. it came out of it and was fine for a while now it won't start (fire) at all.any suggestions?
I have a 99 400ex and my 400 ticks pretty good. I checked the valve adjustment and it still ticks pretty good. You think it can be it’s not timed right? Or
Buen video. Buen trabajo !
Well I has no fire ,so what I did ,by the way this Papabear ,I've got a 400ex And 300ex on the 300 I went from the battery to the off and on wire coming from the switch on the handle bar and added a push button, wit a fuse between the battery and the off and on button just in case and my spark plug started fire, hit me back ,
got a Honda fourtrax 300 is it possible for the fly wheel to be on wrong have set timing twice second time of doing so my valve got bent timing was perfect.
If my cam lobes are not facing down would it make it tick? I’m very stuck on where this tick is coming from on my 400ex. Apparently the whole top end is rebuild with new timing chain. Maybe the tensioner is loose? Need help please
Hey John got a 97 xr400 it's hard to kick it over and the decompress lever doesn't change anything. After about 5 mins of trying it might start. What can cause it too hard to kick or turn over. I can kick it sometime and it get stuck on the compression stroke after a few tries it will finally turn over but not start the and the cycle recycle.
great video but i have a 1996 honda 300ex and i cant find any videos on how to set the timing is it the same as this one or no i need to know quick bc racing season is here and my atv is out of time and will not run right PLEASE HELP
We don't have a video for that right now. We will add it to the suggestion list! If you're on a time schedule, might be worth taking it to a shop this time around.
Jhon i have a question? If i install a stage 2 hotcam for my 2006 honda 400ex does thAt mean i have to change the timing too? I left the timing like for a stage 1 and the front valve bend damage the piston and the header what should i do?
I was doing some snow drifting on my 2003 400EX in 4th gear and it stalled and wouldn't start. So I did a compression test and it had less than 1 psi. I also found out that air is being sucked from my exhaust when I try to start it. What do you think is the problem?
My 1996 Honda 300 I did a top end kit on it and its blowing air out the carb instead of sucking in but its blowing air out the pipe what do you think that is?
I have a 98 Honda Fourtrax 300 4x4 and am wondering . How do I know When I'm on the "compression " stroke or not when I go to set TDC before installing my timing chain and cam Thx
Hey I did the timing on my sons 400 ex as u show on the video and I have done it before. But this time it's not working. When I start the engine it gives only one fire . It just won't run . What could it be ???
So i am doing this to my 04 400ex. Lobes are down, timing marks are correct, I at TDC my bike will fire and run for maybe 5 seconds then shut down. All my valves are adjusted properly she just won't run. Any suggestions?
Thank you I have done everything to my bike new top end the valve cover jug lower so new valve springs rockers and brand new carb from ride now ,and it's still spitting out the carb and last gear I dont have power it moves but wont top out aand hit high rev so I was thinking only thing I haven't done was the timing chain and cam I've done everything and it still runs bad
I'm still confused, when I get the timing mark to the "T" position and put in my cam shaft with the lobes down how do I know if the cam shaft and the motor are on the same stroke? If you can try to explain it would be greatly appreciated!
Hello Caleb. When you set the crankshaft to the T position, and install the camshaft with the lobes down it puts the rotation assembly, and the valve train on the same stroke. I hope that is a good explanation for you.
I've set timing on these things quite a few time this same way. This time around im having a issue when the tdc mark on the flywheel is lined up the piston is not at the top of the stroke. when i use the timing mark and then set the cam timing properly it will get to a point when it will not turn over by hand and seems to bind up. I don't think i'm 180 out because I've messed with all my different options. if I get the piston to the top of the stroke and then set the cam timing it turns over nicely by hand. Any advice on what im doing wrong?
The mark used for timing is the "I" with the sideways T next to it. Line up the "I" with the notch on the case and make sure your lobes are pointing down.
Thanks for the great videos I'm jumping it to my 1st 400ex top end rebuild and your info helped a ton, so again thanks a million..
You videos are great.....I am in the process of taking my 2000 400 apart....
Are you setting the cam sprocket timing marks with the chain tensioned or not tensioned
In here in 2022, great video series
Thanks for the videos very well explained also I got my 400ex back up and running.
+Rory Reyes: Awesome, Rory! Thanks for the thanks and glad you got your machine back up and running!
I rebuilt a 2000 400 ex today and did not lap the valves in you think that will keep it from firing up now?

How do I get my starter off of my 2007 Honda trx 450er all it does is just spin don’t catch the timing Chan is in the way can you do a video ?

Your the honda man that's for sure.
How do you pull the chain up up and move just a chain and then put it back on the Cam without moving the flywill when you move the chain
Do you mean take the bolts out of the timing gear?
You should really put something in your last video to inform people that you have to do this before you try and start it .Hopefully I didn't damage anything trying to start it .

It's common to have a little tic in these motors. You can readjust until you quiet it down a bit.
what size key do i use for the big cap?
Ya ever find out because I need to know?

Would you apply this method to the TRX 300 ex models as well?
Mine still won't start ,however before I change Ed the head it started up great
So since the rebuild and new rings whats the recommended breakin procedure for the piston / rings?
Same as break in for a new unit. I believe it's 10 hours for this unit. Easy into it.
Thank you. Service manual seems to leave that out.
If I'm not gettin fire what should I check first? Your videos are awesome super helpful thx
Plug, coil wire, fuses. If you keep testing down the system, you'll figure out where the spark stops.

Buena información.. pero las levas de admisión para donde quedan
would this be the same way for timing a trx 300ex 2008?
If my cam lobes are not facing down would it make it tick? I’m very stuck on where this tick is coming from on my 400ex. Apparently the whole top end is rebuild with new timing chain. Maybe the tensioner is loose? Need help please
Tensioner would be more of a rattle than a tic.
how tight should chain be
does the motor need to be set at tdc when being disassembled
It's easier to set it at TDC to inspect. You can always reset it in the middle.
Thanks for timing marks info 👍
What if mine keeps jumping after getting tdc? After riding for about 20 min
hi can ya do a video on how replace one way clutch ?
hello i just rebuilt my 04 400ex and put a 416 kits and hotcams and it just doesnt seam to have anymore power then it used to
How do you fix it when you do all that and it's backwards and it's firing the wrong valves at the wrong time
Hey John got a 97 xr400 it's hard to kick it over and the decompress lever doesn't change anything. After about 5 mins of trying it might start. What can cause it too hard to kick or turn over. deez nuts improperly adjusted valves
What key is for the caps of the TDC caps
is this the same for a 300ex?
great video. is that the same type of setup on a honda fourtrax 300?
I am sorry, it is not the same setup as the TRX-300
I got a trx 400 ex my cam stops turning when it hits the rocker arms
Where is a piston located ,when you Put. It in time. ? Top or bottom of the jug head.

Sounds like the timing was off. Normally, Hotcams would state if you need to degree in the cam.

I was doing some snow drifting on my 2003 400EX in 4th gear and it stalled and wouldn't start. So I did a compression test and it had less than 1 psi. I also found out that air is being sucked from my exhaust when I try to start it. What do you think is the problem?
You're going to have to dive into the top end. My guess is you blew a valve.
Will this timing video and engine rebuild video apply to my 2002 trx400 ex when I install the 440cc piston and cylinder kit?
Yes, it should work for that as well.
Do you guys have a video how to check the timing on a 2007 TRX 450?
We don't yet, but we have added it to the suggestion list. That's a popular quad.
How do u get the screws out so you can see the T and be able to adjust it to top dead center.
Should be a hex wrench.
Fantastic video! Thanks a bunch! Is this same timing used with a bunch of hondas vtwins around this year?
Hello Rush. unfortunately this guide does not pertain to Hondas vtwin engines.
Partzilla could you make a video on vtwin cam timing please?
My 1996 Honda 300 I did a top end kit on it and its blowing air out the carb instead of sucking in but its blowing air out the pipe what do you think that is?
Compression, valves or timing. Usually it comes down to timing or a valve not seating correctly.
Not quite what I was looking for I have a 2003 250EX Honda no timing change whatsoever how do I set the timing just did copy and job but not crank
I have a 98 Honda Fourtrax 300 4x4 and am wondering . How do I know
When I'm on the "compression " stroke or not when I go to set TDC before installing my timing chain and cam Thx
When you set the timing mark to TDC, you want the lobes to face down.
Hey I did the timing on my sons 400 ex as u show on the video and I have done it before. But this time it's not working. When I start the engine it gives only one fire . It just won't run . What could it be ???
It could be literally anything. If you just did the timing, confirm it's correct and check valves.
So i am doing this to my 04 400ex. Lobes are down, timing marks are correct, I at TDC my bike will fire and run for maybe 5 seconds then shut down. All my valves are adjusted properly she just won't run. Any suggestions?
If all the mechanical parts are correct, it will boil down to electrical or fuel. Best guess would be fuel.
How can you adjust the valves how to set the time on a 2001 Honda TRX 300 ex
Is there anyway to tighten the timing chain because mine is real lose. or do I have to get a new one????
You can reset the cam chain tensioner. If it's still loose after a reset, it may need replacement.
for a 2006 400ex hot cam stage 2 is it the same? or do i have to go back 1 teeth on the sprocket or maybe forward?
Answer?
hey I got a 2005 Honda TRX 400 i just did a top-end rebuild and the valves are ticking what does it mean. already adjusted valves and still ticking
A little ticking is normal on this motor. Be sure to do the valve adjustment when the engine is warm, it will reduce the ticking when riding.
Is it the same on a 01 300 ex need help
Does the timing have to be directly on the T or the line before? My cam line is up just a little on one side.
What did you find out?
How to set valve’s with a 440 big bore
Can u please make a video on a 2001 Honda trx300 ex
How can you time a 2002 300ex
Would a stretched timeing chain cause it not to line up?
If it's stretched, get a new one. That's not a typical situation. Tensioner...misalighnment is more likely.
Thank you I have done everything to my bike new top end the valve cover jug lower so new valve springs rockers and brand new carb from ride now ,and it's still spitting out the carb and last gear I dont have power it moves but wont top out aand hit high rev so I was thinking only thing I haven't done was the timing chain and cam I've done everything and it still runs bad
nice video that help me a lot thanks from quebec canada :)

Partzilla okay I think I have it all together right, I just didn't want to start it up and have a problem. Thanks the videos helped alot
Good job, thanks for interesting videos.
I've set timing on these things quite a few time this same way. This time around im having a issue when the tdc mark on the flywheel is lined up the piston is not at the top of the stroke. when i use the timing mark and then set the cam timing properly it will get to a point when it will not turn over by hand and seems to bind up. Did you ever get an answer to this
Is there 2 timing marks "T" and 2 dash with line ?
The mark used for timing is the "I" with the sideways T next to it. Line up the "I" with the notch on the case and make sure your lobes are pointing down.
ok if i do that and cam is all lined up it should start right ?
If everything is lined up and put back together, that's the goal.
see your marks at 1:26 mine are backwards like the "T" is before the "I" do i still set it at "I" ??
That should be the timing mark.
Do I have to redo the valves . If I’m just replacing the head gasket
It never hurts to check them, but it isn't necessary if you are just fixing a leak.
Partzilla thanks I’m about to take apart my 400ex to replace head gasket it . Do you have any advice
Take your time, reference videos if you need to!
Ok I'm rebuilding my top end but for some reason, doesnt seem like enough slack to get the chain onto the sproket??? Help please!!
I know it’s late but you gotta unbolt the sprocket from the cam
What would a 400ex run like if it was off time
If it was slightly off, it would run poorly. Otherwise, it wouldn't run at all.
Thank you for the video.
Just found the vid ty
Does the gasket for the valve cover need to be replaced when taking the valve cover off, or is it one that can be re-used?
Generally speaking, rubber gaskets can be reused, but the paper gaskets we recommend replacing.
Partzilla Okay thank you, the valve cover one is rubber, correct?
It varies by model. The TRX is not rubber.
Partzilla Okay thanks.
