Not really. Borderlands is a very good game imo. Don't get me wrong, im playin Overwatch a lot at the moment, but the money and time i invested in BL2 were really well spent.
Wieprzek Borderlands is a very lousy shooter. The combat is very repetitive. It doesn't have a lot of interesting gear. It doesn't _actually_ have a lot of weapon variety. Any Far Cry game is miles above it in this regard. The only things it has going for it are loot and humour. Like I said, it was practically the first single player looter shooter and it's the most well known in its niche.

Had they done it like paladins and make it, say, f2p, they probably could have been around for longer. Blizzard can turn any shitty game into a pot of gold (hearthstone), so you can't compete with a Blizzard game by making a similar game and sell it for a similar price.

Anyone who actually played both games knew how different they really were. They were both hero shooters with some similar character designs. The experience of playing both games was very different. It was neat that Battleborn actually had a campaign. Still bummed OW couldn’t even pull that off after 7 years and a sequel. I’ll be honest I enjoyed both.

My question is why Paladins, another game very similar to Overwatch, succeeded where as Battleborn failed. Is it the free-to-play aspect? Perhaps it's a lot more polished?
One of the biggest problems that Battleborn had is that 2k can't into effective advertising. Of the few ads they put, none of them gave you any idea what the game even was. This is why people are saying Battleborn is an Overwatch clone, when in reality the two games are nothing alike. If they had made more effective advertising efforts, I think the game could have been a moderate success with a small, but dedicated playerbase. Now it's a ghost town, and it sucks, because there's a good game to found in Battleborn.
Borderlands is good, I'm not saying it's bad. I got one to my PS3 that my dad bought, I must say. It really is good, me and my sister played it on Coop campaign because we have 2 controllers
Gearbox has like one successful franchise among a 20 year stretch of scandals and failures, and the marketing and timing of this specific game was not something that a smart person would have gone with. Just be smarter than a plank of wood, and you'll be a better dev than Gearbox ever was. Grats.

Call me lunatic but its like someone went ahead and sold the game concept to 3 different companies. (battleborn - overwatch - paladins). And they went ahead and rushed the development trying at the same time to make it slightly different.
FellTheSky i know this is over a month ago but paladins was way different before overwatch released. It was like moba but from a first person perspective (not just mmofps), it has huge maps similar to the ones in dota and LoL. After overwatch's release and success, they revamped the whole game which looks like a plain copy of overwatch

Y'know when the beta came out I played I tried it out and I thought it was fun so I bought it. It seemed pretty interesting as it had campaign and multiplayer and different classes but the day it came out there were only 3 people queuing up for multiplayer for the next couple of days it was just the same couple of people queuing, so then I went into steam and changed the region to include Asia as well and I only got 6 people I spent more than an hour trying to get into a game. The lobby needs 8 players to start the game :(
I like to imagine that borderlands the pre sequel is a scrapped idea for borderlands' story that they turn down and instead they make a different story for borderlands 1 and after succeeding in the process and eventually releasing borderlands 2 and its DLCs, they felt bliss and empty so they decided to get the ditched story running back for the pre sequel

Man, seeing Randy be super optimistic while the result of the game's failure is playing simultaneously just bummed me out. You could tell he was proud of it. One of the things is that you can never start believing that your game is the greatest thing ever, because it will must surely won't, they released it too close with Overwatch (dug their own grave), also, design-wise, the game is just dumb (tryhard humour that isn't natural as Borderlands, weird and uninteresting looking characters, micro-transactions, etc.) I will become a Game Designer in the future as well, and this game taught me a lesson, if you are making something that looks like another game, make sure that what your game has different about it is actually interesting.

Well, it is made by Blizzard... Blizzard are masters of the game industry. I have my doubts of Blizzard. When I bought Overwatch I went in with low expectations, boy. The game is surprisingly fun, easy to get the hang of, hard to master.
Even thou it's different, there were number of similarities. The FP perspective, hero-shooter mechanics, and character centric design made them hard to tell apart. Also Blizzard low-balled the hell out of Battleborn with the free open beta coinciding with Battleborn's release, then lowering their price which completely crushed it.

Had they done it like paladins and make it, say, f2p, they probably could have been around for longer. Blizzard can turn any shitty game into a pot of gold (hearthstone), so you can't compete with a Blizzard game by making a similar game and sell it for a similar price.

Anyone who actually played both games knew how different they really were.
They were both hero shooters with some similar character designs. The experience of playing both games was very different. It was neat that Battleborn actually had a campaign. Still bummed OW couldn’t even pull that off after 7 years and a sequel. I’ll be honest I enjoyed both.

One of the biggest problems that Battleborn had is that 2k can't into effective advertising.
Of the few ads they put, none of them gave you any idea what the game even was. This is why people are saying Battleborn is an Overwatch clone, when in reality the two games are nothing alike.
If they had made more effective advertising efforts, I think the game could have been a moderate success with a small, but dedicated playerbase. Now it's a ghost town, and it sucks, because there's a good game to found in Battleborn.

Gearbox has like one successful franchise among a 20 year stretch of scandals and failures, and the marketing and timing of this specific game was not something that a smart person would have gone with. Just be smarter than a plank of wood, and you'll be a better dev than Gearbox ever was. Grats.

Call me lunatic but its like someone went ahead and sold the game concept to 3 different companies. (battleborn - overwatch - paladins). And they went ahead and rushed the development trying at the same time to make it slightly different.
FellTheSky i know this is over a month ago but paladins was way different before overwatch released. It was like moba but from a first person perspective (not just mmofps), it has huge maps similar to the ones in dota and LoL. After overwatch's release and success, they revamped the whole game which looks like a plain copy of overwatch

Y'know when the beta came out I played I tried it out and I thought it was fun so I bought it. It seemed pretty interesting as it had campaign and multiplayer and different classes but the day it came out there were only 3 people queuing up for multiplayer for the next couple of days it was just the same couple of people queuing, so then I went into steam and changed the region to include Asia as well and I only got 6 people I spent more than an hour trying to get into a game. The lobby needs 8 players to start the game :(

Gearbox openly said that they were influenced by Codehunters for their first Borderlands game and there were was no offense or copyright infringement or else there would've been a lawsuit. Something like this literally happens every single week in the world of books, games and movies/tv shows. You can easily find other examples of stuff like this happening, and it's not even always a bad thing, because it can draw attention to the original. You cannot cherry-pick this example to be bad but be okay with others.

Man, seeing Randy be super optimistic while the result of the game's failure is playing simultaneously just bummed me out. You could tell he was proud of it. Kinda freaks me out because I want to design games but at the same time I don't want to feel like a failure with a crushed spirit. The internet is fucking ruthless whether you deserve it or not.
One of the things is that you can never start believing that your game is the greatest thing ever, because it will must surely won't, they released it too close with Overwatch (dug their own grave), also, design-wise, the game is just dumb (tryhard humour that isn't natural as Borderlands, weird and uninteresting looking characters, micro-transactions, etc.) I will become a Game Designer in the future as well, and this game taught me a lesson, if you are making something that looks like another game, make sure that what your game has different about it is actually interesting.
BlackFrost another important thing, is to know your audience and what makes them interested in it, it's also not a good idea to take multiple different audiences interests and mash them together. (Just letting that out there)

Even thou it's different, there were number of similarities. The FP perspective, hero-shooter mechanics, and character centric design made them hard to tell apart.
