You know, I think the OUYA was just badly timed. They should have sold it _just_ as the next gen consoles were releasing _and_ it should have been somewhat faster than the Xbox 360. The 360 is now about $100 if you buy it on ebay or something. They should have made it just a tiny gaming PC. Most customers already have a 360 or PS3. Thus, there HAS to be an actual reason to buy it because, via Xbox 360, you can already play "games on the TV".
RIP, OUYA. You seemed really, really cool for a moment.

Like to sure it can still happen but I just got thrown off because I thought you meant a large margin of kids will grow up with this
Worst part is the store was up till 2019 so the kids couldn’t even tell their parents that the system got shut down and you couldn’t get new games anymore. So the mom would never buy a new system because “the one you have still works”

Honestly the concept wasn’t inherently terrible. Allowing indi devs the opportunity to create “console” games while only dedicating the resources of a mobile game is pretty cool. Emulators would’ve been pretty cool too. Unfortunately a library of nothing but basic phone games that weren’t designed to be played on a controller or large screen pretty well killed it.
I love watching this video every once in a while. Even now I like to remember that AT THE TIME THE OUYA CAME OUT, the Tegra 3 inside it was already considered pretty low-mid in performance. My Nexus 7 2012 had a Tegra 3 in it, and I was never that impressed with the performance.

Lmao I have bought a 7 USD USB controller once from some unknown Chinese brand named Kolke and it is still as good as new after like 2 years of daily usage. The 50 USD Ouya controller on the other hand can't even last for one week without starting to wear out, it's such a joke to think it has a much worse build quality than a 7 USD Chinese USB controller.

The biggest issue is just the concept; no one wants to play mobile games on a big screen. You don't buy a phone to play mobile games, you play mobile games because you bought a phone.
Very good point, but I'm guessing they wanted to be kinda pioneers because of the rise of big games being playable on phones now as well.

There's just an experimental market for it right now (for the bigger games) so this company obviously took a shot at this (possibly growing) market and failed. That's what marketing is about right? Promoting an idea with a plan that you try and create with loads of data, and sometimes it doesn't work out.

Hot take: looking back at this makes me realize the Ouya was kind of ahead of its time. Smart TVs and Apple TVs are ubiquitous these days, cloud gaming is a growing industry, and "hackable" devices like the Raspberry Pi sell a lot, this could've very easily catered to the userbase looking for a low-cost device that hooks up to their TV and plays games and to indie developers who want an open platform.
If only this wasnt shit though lol

A small little device that could plug into your TV and run Netflix was not a new concept at the time, and other devices could already do it cheaper and better. Certainly not worth the Kickstarter hype.

Dan Mattrick's plans for the Xbox One was definitely to move it away from gaming, which explains why it has an HDMI in port, the emphasis on its DVR abilities, and the almost non-existence of gaming discussion at that first reveal. It was only after gamers revolted over the DRM nonsense that Microsoft made Mattrick "resign" and replaced him with the much more pro-gamer Phil Spencer, that has been trying to restore the Xbox brand ever since.

And now you can basically do far more with a Raspberry Pi 3 and a bluetooth controller. Amazing.
Yeah, but a few years ago, it worked great as an emulation platform. Always saw it not as a console killer, but as a cheap console meant to be fun. It's still a fantastic device to bring to the cabin with a dedicated 64 Gig thumbdrive, so we can watch movies and play games on the same device.
Yep, I still use mine as an emulation box. The interface works well enough for it and I like how a PS3 controller can pair up with it natively (without the need for a 3rd party program installed first.) All in all, unless I'm looking to play something in the N64 era and up, the OUYA does the trick. It even works surprisingly well with PSX games, with the android version of ePSXe .
Alacress I got Seaman on the Dreamcast emulator to run on mine. Maybe you should try side mounting another Android emulator?
Oh I could get them to work technically, but the OUYA isn't powerful enough to run them at any acceptable fps, imo. Some of the N64 games ran ok, but if I were going to emulate that system or the dreamcast, I'd use something more powerful.
You can play SEAMAN on your Ouya!?! How? I'm assuming Reicast for an emulator, but what about setting up the microphone? I've wanted to play that game since I heard of it, but just assumed it wouldn't be possible with the whole microphone peripheral.

Also...the steam controller. It's basically made of touchpads.
