I was trained in graphics in high school, and I feel as though affinity has been a welcome home for me. I won’t get into the details, but let’s just say that after a vision correction, I gave graphic design another shot and I realized how much I missed it. I personally have all three programs, because I do various things. At the moment I’m working on a couple of greeting cards for friends of mine, as well as an upcoming business card, and I’ve also been working on some photo editing practice. As far as publisher goes, I’m working on a book. :)

I have been using the entire Affinity suite for a year now. I recently fulfilled my dream and purchased an Ipad Pro. The first applications I bought for it were of course Photo and Desinger. It is amazing how well they work together! I can alternate between working on my Ipad and desktop computer by syncing files through the cloud. And all this without paying a monthly fee!

I love the fact there is an alternative to the Adobe packages I have been doing design for to many years to mention, I am also with the thousands I have paid out in the past for these packages peeved to have to now pay a monthly subscription rather than the original update one off fee they used to charge, so an alternative is a great idea especially when they are so reasonably priced.

Awesome, glad it was helpful! Unfortunately the TH-cam process right now really seems to encourage waffling in order to get more view time. It's a bad incentive for educational content that should be straight forward and to the point.
Just buy them all...they're good value and you won't be disappointed. I've been a professional designer for 40 years, before computers and all through Quark, Adobe.
Now l use Affinity. The free updates just keep getting better.

@@muthia2913 yeah, sorry I didn't address that in this video, the best answer is both if you have both and can afford to get both. But if that is not a financial option the real question is how do you want to work? Right now publisher isn't on iPad, so if you want to use that StudioLink functionality you'll have to go windows (or Mac). But if you need to do a lot of work while traveling then I would go with the iPad, it's just so portable and powerful.

Thanks for your excellent presentation. I have been using Photo for several years, mostly on my iPad lately. I have wanted to expand my ability in the graphics area and to “publish” a small booklet. Thanks for the info. I just purchased Affinity Publisher on sale. I now have all 3 of the Affinity apps. I lost Adobe Photoshop CS6 compatibility with the latest update to my iMac, so now I'll spend time learning the Affinity apps.

Thanks for a clean and clear video on the differences between the apps. I still have to think a little more on which app to go for as I edit lot of photos and create thumbnails for my TH-cam videos and also social media posts.
Glad I could help. Sounds like Photo is would be able to do what you need, but it can be very helpful to have the other two as well. I enjoy making thumbnails in Publisher so I have access to all the tools.
i think its better using affinity designer .. i used it all the time. Photo its like ... photo editing not so good for thumbnail @_@ ( or i just cant used it yet ) . BTw affinity its on sale now 50%

I've used Affinity Photo for a while. Took some learning as I used Photoshop in high school and had a subscription for a while but hated having to pay monthly for it. Then my friend recommended Affinity. Once I start getting into my photography stuff more I'm going to be getting all 3 so I can work on new things and grow from there.

I was looking at Affinity Photo when I discovered the other two programs. I was confused that they weren't tiers of the same program, but still assumed they were at the core the same tool. Perhaps Affinity could be more clear on that they are three different programs, and not three versions of the same program for different users' needs. Thanks for clearing this up and not taking forever to get to the point!

They use the same file system so you can start working in one, continue in the text and finish it all in the last of the three!

Just bought the new iPad and looking for a good software to create better thumbnails. I have bought both already on my MBP (never ended up using them.. I know waste of money lol) but now with the iPad I really plan to use one of these programs to create the best thumbnails possible. In reality and from what a lot of people say online, is to just buy both because they’re on sale... but at the same time I already have them both on my computer and would really only need the best one for the job to do on my IPad. What would you recommend
I recommend Designer for thumbnails on the iPad. On desktop I use Publisher to create thumbnails. For thumbnails you like to have a lot of versatility for thumbnails and Publisher is the most versatile (when you have studio link) followed by Designer. I have course on my skillshare on using Publisher for thumbnails, many of the same things would apply when using designer. Good luck!

Not sure if it was the case when you made this video, but affinity designer can also combine rasta and vector graphics now, which is a big selling point.
I've been using GIMP for t-shirt designs and album art covers. Someone recommended I go with Designer over Photo, but I've never been a fan of Illustrator and vector based programs and I think Photo makes more sense for what I'm doing
Generally the advice you heard is correct, you should do t-shirt design in vector, album art could go either way depending on what type it is. The benefit of Affinity Designer is that it can do both vector and raster graphics well.

Yh, just bought Designer and I adore it already, been using inkscape for a while but unfortunately it lacks a lot of features that are available in Adobe's illustrator like the smart guidelines and snapping, but I hate the approach that adobe took regarding the payment method for their so called creative cloud, so I went with Affinity Designer instead of illustrator and I regret nothing so far, being used both software's.
i bought all three i will be using them for book cover art design and web development wireframes but i have bought affinity 2

I purchased Affinity Designer & Photo for iPad. AD is worthy for me. It’s fun to work with and it’s powerful enough for Adobe Illustrator old users. For fast and bulk photos adjusting, I use Photos for Mac. Cause my photo management is done via Photos-App and is sync to all devices. Especially the opt+alt+c/v for format copying is the must function. Even iPad haven’t it. A.P. makes for me in this scenario unusable. Very pity. I tried for a long time, to use my iPad Pro as daily machine, where I can work from everywhere. A.D. makes me really happy for that.
I'm glad Affinity Designer is working well for you. Affinity Photo is Photoshop competitor, not a lightroom competitor so it's not designed for working on batches of Photos. For working on batches on iPad I use either Darkroom or Pixelmator Photo. I have a couple videos looking at both of those that you can check out.

Hi Ben, I currently use Photoshop Elements 20 on my MacBook for digital scrapbooking. My process involves creating a 12x12 photoshop document and adding photos, text, elements, patterned paper to come up with one final .jpg which I have printed. I create pages both from scratch and from templates which are readily available. I also sometimes PSE to take a 4x6 photo and add graphics/elements and text to that photo. Then, I save it as a .jpg and print it or later use it in one of the 12x12 documents which I initially mentioned. I still use PSE on my MacBook, but I now have an iPad Air 4 which I’d like to be able to do similar tasks “on the go.” I already purchased Affinity Photo, and I’m in the process of learning it. Given what I described as my digital scrapbooking process, which Affinity app(s) do you think I need? Also, does the “Studio Link” work on an iPad or only on a laptop? Thanks for your input!
Hi Evie, for what you are describing for you digital scrapbook I would get all three programs on Mac and use Affinity Publisher with studiolink to use Photo and Designer tools. Unfortunately studiolink is not present on iPad yet because Affinity Publisher has not been released for iPad :( so on iPad I think Photo will work best for you. If you are planning to do all the work on the iPad then you can just skip the desktop apps all together. Thanks for a great video. I liked and subscribed. I have a question. I am a poet who is launching a new venture this year - custom poems for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. combined with customers' personal pictures, with the final product being output to canvas prints. So I need to make sure photos look good and then merge them with text. Will I have any need for the design software then, or will the photo and publishing programs suffice? Or should I still just grab all three - they're 50% off right now - so only $75 for the entire suite? I had considered Canva Pro, but understand it will not be ideal for vector graphics and CMYK to create files that will translate well to a final physically printed product. which one would you use for web design?
For wireframes I would use Affinity Publisher with StudioLink to use all three together, but if I had to choose just one I would use Affinity Designer. But this would be for design only, none of them can actually build websites like Dreamweaver or Wordpress.

Hi Jan, something like a whole deck of cards is really best suited to a desktop publishing app like Publisher because it has master pages and can deal with lots of pages in a document. But you really want to use all three programs if you can afford them all because you will want the designer things for the graphics and the photo things for the photo. Like I said in the video about StudioLink in Publisher lets you access all three apps at once (but you need to have purchased all of them for it to work). Check I my video on StudioLink if you need more info on that. I hope that all makes sense.
For me this is my explanation:
Designer: Users who want to create vector-based illustrations. (alternative to Illustrator/Ai)
Photo: Users who want to edit photos. (alternative to Photoshop/Ps)
Publisher: Users who want to create books/magazines, etc.. (alternative to InDesign/Id)

Hello Anja, Affinity Photo is very comparable to Photoshop, it can do almost everything that Photoshop can do. Affinity Publisher only has access to the Photo tools if you also own and have Affinity Photo installed on the same computer using the StudioLink feature. So if you only want to buy one app you probably want to go with Affinity Photo.

I think Designer is the one I need, I've never done anything in graphic design and recently started a Twitch channel and a podcast with some family and friends, now I'm looking to create a couple logos and some overlays/animations for our twitch channel. My question is that if I don’t want or require to buy Designer & Photo for desktop ,would I still be able to use Publisher effectively?.I do understand that studio link is awesome,but I just don’t have the money or the need to buy the whole suite in desktop.Please advise! I guess it depends on your workflow and what you are trying to make. Publisher is great on it's own for laying out documents, but without studio link you lose the ability to easily make changes to your raster and vector graphics on the fly. If you are receiving assets from someone that you wouldn't change then it is probably fine, or if your layout work deals primarily with text and not with graphics then it would probably be fine as well. Publisher can do simple graphics on it's own, it's just when you try to get more complex that having studio link is really helpful.
I am an oil painter and I need something to edit refrence photos, and draw thumbnails. Would photo be the best choice? Great video dude

You can do batchjobs with macros in affinity photo!
Hi D, thanks for commenting! You can do that, but that doesn't really make it a replacement for something like Lightroom or Darkroom. The workflow is very different and the building out macros and then tweaking them is considerably different than just copying edits inside of one of those programs. Also note that Macros are only available in the desktop app.
Thanks for the great info. I’m pretty new to the designer universe and I’m looking for something to draw some doodles for coloring books. I need to draw and to put the books together. Which one do you recommend? I have a pen table and a Windows laptop. Can’t afford an iPad at this moment.
For making the book you will want Publisher. For drawing I would use Designer so you can make them vectors. If you can get them before the sale ends I would just get all three

Since you are working with existing photos I would say Photo is probably best for that type of work, but if it were me I would get all three and work in Publisher so I could have the best tools for all parts of the project.

I use Publisher for doing artwork of map layouts. But you have to bring in the map as a picture to gain the information that you wish to illustrate. It is all right to scale it by the nodes, but how much easier it would be if you could bring it in, and then scale to a percentage scale. There are sometime 50 pictures and to hand scale them is a pain to get them to match perfectly. A percentage constant scale button like Adobe Illustrator would make if far much easier, quicker and accurate. Come on Affinity wake up to this simple addition. Thanks . Other than that great programmes that you can flip between the persona to achieve things.

Hi , great video very informative, I own a digital billboard - which one of the affinity products will be best for me ? I need to resize PDFs and images, remove images and text from the original image and make 2 seperate slides. NB I have no experience in graphic design. Thank you
If you are making graphics for billboards you should be using a vector program like Affinity Designer. But it sounds like you are not making the graphics yourself, you are receiving them as PDFs and Bitmap files (like JPGs and PNGs). For removing items Affinity Photo would be the best, but it is not the best at making slides, that would be better in Affinity Publisher. So all in all I would say they are so cheap right now you might as well buy all three and do use all the features together in Affinity Publisher using the StudioLink.
I worked in graphics professionally as a designer for many years. (Do you remember the IBM Selectric, or a Compugraphic that took up half a room? Still miss my trusty old Pagemaker though!) Climbed on Photoshop wagon but never entirely happy with it. Used Indesign occasionally but didn't love that either. I always wanted something in between and finally it looks like my decades old wish has come true! I expect to use Publisher most, followed by Photo because I do love my layers. Thanks for affirming my decision to get all three. For the cost vs Adobe I can easily justify it. Skillshare sounds great too. Where would I find info on the Studio linking?
Hi Paula, I'm glad I could help. Linking the studios is really easy, all you need is to have all three apps installed on the same machine and then in Publisher you will see the three app icons along the top (these are personas) when you click on Designer or Photo it will go through the linking process. this course is for V1, I don't have one for V2 yet but the process is essentially the same in the two versions with slight interface changes.

Tips: Get some acoustical treatment, speak closer to your mic. Use a Dynamic rather than a condensor, in cardioid pattern rather than omni, and in a dead vs. live room.)

I am looking to create themed obituaries, flyers, pamphlets, business cards, logos and more. I am leaning towards Affinity Publisher but considering all three if they will allow me to merge different aspects into one program. What is your recommendation for what I am looking to do.
Publisher for sure, but all 3 will be best if you can afford it. Then you can just work in publisher but you can deal with the photos for things like obituaries and pamphlets in the Photo persona, and you can do the vectors for business cards and logo, etc in the designer persona. Definitely makes like easier.

Hi Ted, If you have to choose only one go with Designer, it is the most versatile. But the best option is to go with both Publisher and Designer and work from publisher while accessing the vector features through StudioLink in my opinion.

Hi Tims, publisher is my fav too, excited for it to come to iPad eventually. Yes in Designer there are art boards, very similar to Adobe Illustrator, I’m not sure how Corel Draw is different, but art boards are pretty much just pages but they can be different sizes. You can create an art board when you start a new document by ticking the art board box, you can make more art boards later using the art board tool. Hope that helps.

What one would be best for business cards. I like to put drop shadows and such to my text ? What one would have the most fonts? thanks!

They all have the same fonts, if you want more fonts you can download them from places like dafont or font squirrel, of course the best fonts have to be paid for most of the time
This may sound like a dumb question but I’m looking for a program that resembles the simplicity of the old printshop and Corel programs. I’m not a professional and I’m looking for something that just assists me in hand drawn designs and at home projects like templates for wood working, etc. Would any of these fit the bill? I don’t have a graphics background so simplicity is key. I really got the most out of Printshop 2 for Mac, especially with manipulating fonts and online clip art.
Sorry I'm not really familiar with the Printshop products so I can't compare them to Affinity. Most design programs have a learning curve to them and the Affinity programs are no exception to that, although I think they are easier to learn than the adobe programs. I do have courses on Skillshare that teach skills in each program.
Which one's good for TH-cam custom thumbnails, Designer or Photo shop?
Either works, I a course on skillshare you can take on making thumbnails. In that one I use Publisher so I have the features of all three together, but it is pretty much the same no matter which program you use.

Would publisher be a good application for creating format compliant ebook files to use with Amazon, Kobo, Google Play Books, Apple Books, Barnes and Noble etc. The industry standard seems to be an Apple only program called Vellum. I only use PC, so thought this might be a viable alternative?
Hi Tony, the main issue people are having with Publisher and ebook is that it cannot export epub files, some people have made PDFs and converted the epub but it's not the same as being able to export directly.
first thanks a lot for this video! I saw some videos about affinity designer getting compared to procreate. I'm searching for a good drawing software (maybe with possibilities for animations) and used Photoshop elements for that til now. So would affinity designer or affinity photo be a more fitting choice?
Are you using an iPad? If you are then Procreate sounds like it would be the best choice for you. Neither Designer or Photo have animation features in them currently, and Procreate is superior to both when it comes to drawing. Photo is going to be more like Photoshop if that is what you are used to, but with them being half off right now I would just pick up both if you can.
@@bendesignsmedia sorry for the lack of information I don't have an iPad and only use my Grafik tablet and windows PC to draw so that's why procreate sadly isn't an option for me. I probably gonna end up buying both affinity photo and affinity designer as you said. Thank you already for the fast reply!

Hi Gregory, Publisher is an InDesign competitor, not an Acrobat competitor, so filling you can create PDFs but you can't fill in PDF forms in it. Hope that helps.
PDF Expert makes it possible to edit PDF files, not as well as Adobe Acrobat, but quite well. Fillable files, sorry, nope.

Hello and thanks for the video. I am a graphic designer and photographer way before computers where used,and started my computer use from Photoshop 4.0 and on. Since i am also a photographer for furniture manufacturers, photoshop has been the ultimate tool for me. Having an alternative, mainly due to cost, i must ask if i can turn to Affinity photo without any problem in using my previous work.The assistance of the Browser is very essential to me and i do not know if Affinity has such a program. Additionally , can i open my works ( mainly furniture catalogs) that i created on Indesign with the Affinity Publisher? Thank you!
Hello Antonios, thanks for watching. I'm not sure what you mean by the assistance of the Browser, are you talking about Adobe Bridge for organizing you files? If so Affinity does not have such a program. If you are talking about something else let me know and I will try to answer. As far as InDesign and Publisher goes, you can only open IDML files from InDesign in publisher, you cannot open INDD files. So it will depend on whether you have packaged with IDML files or not. I would also not expect everything to work perfectly with these files since you would be changing programs.

I have been a teacher for over 25 years and educational quality manager for 5 years. This will make a big difference to your channel and the amount of subscribers and I believe your content is on point and insightful. @@bendesignsmedia its so refreshing that you are open to comments like this. I specialise in eLearning specifically digital authoring tools cross continant. I know its dull but I have to understand pace and word count as english is a short language and when translated needs more space and time in videos. In general conversation averages at around 150 words per minute. For teachers we need to slow our pace to help learners internalise so about 120. I checked your pace between 1 minute an 2 minute in the video and you where 217 words per minute.
@@DigiDocsUk Unfortunately good instructional methods and youtube video retention don't always mix well. I do tend to be a fast talker, but my courses do take things at a much slower pace.
As an eLearning specialist and quality manager for a multi national company, I would strongly disagree. However, I respect your choice. Good look expanding your channel.

I use Publisher. It has multipages and more photoshop and illustrator features than inDesing has. I can easily switch to photos and Designer if i need more features. So, it just like having multipages with photo and designer.
