    I had the Adobe suite and when my annual renewal time came up I asked Adobe for a better discount. They said they wouldn't go any lower. HA HA HA HA LOL. Bad idea Adobe. I gave them the middle finger and promptly bought all 3 Affinity programs in both the desktop AND the Ipad versions. That is still cheaper than a year of Adobe and I have never looked back.

    Switched from Adobe to Corel (who're going down the same subscription rabbit hole) and now to the Affinity Trinity. No regrets whatsoever. Indeed, I purchased Affinity Designer soon after release. And although it was (and still is) lacking certain features in comparison to Illustrator and CD, we have to remember it is still a version 1.xx product, albeit a maturing one.
    Remember when InDesign 1.0x came out? It was referred to as ''Quark Killer'' (although in fairness not by Adobe themselves). It lacked features QXpress 4.0 already had such as type on a path and table creation. The latter had to be added to InDesign via a plug-in! These features came along in the free 1.5 update. So I'm confident new features will come along in Affinity and thus close the gap even further.

    I just wish Adobe had a 'create your own bundle' feature and pay for the apps that you need in one go. Unfortunaltey Adobe is charging too much for the value you get out of the Apps TBH. Just got Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer on sale and been using it for a week. Think it's definitley meeting the Adobe standards. Sure I'll have to get use to not having the cloud integration but I would much rather give up those bells and wistles if I can open and edit a PSD or AI document to quickly make adjustments I need. Thanks for the video!

    • @bendesignsmedia
      @bendesignsmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Frank, glad you were able to get them on sale. Have you tried opening an AI document though, I don't think it works in Affinity programs, but PSD does. I could be wrong about that though.

    • @bendesignsmedia
      @bendesignsmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I assume prices will have to go up (just based on inflation alone, but also because the product is getting better)

    • @GraphicdesignforFree
      @GraphicdesignforFree 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Deborah Hearne on one hand low prices are great, but developers also have to be paid... The more developers you have, the faster the improvement of features?

    • @bendesignsmedia
      @bendesignsmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Deborah Hearne definitely no insider information, just speculation :D I didn't use serif products before affinity designer came out, so I don't have the historical context you do. Thanks for commenting.

    • @GraphicdesignforFree
      @GraphicdesignforFree 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Deborah Hearne sorry for the confusion, but I don't know whether they hired new developers. I'm just thinking that low prices means not so many developers, higher prices means more developers, but this is just simple thinking from my side. There is probably more to it, than just the amount of developers. Because Affinity software is based on more modern code (which is the case), it is probably more flexible, and easier to maintain and expand. So maybe less developers needed.

    • @peterbreis5407
      @peterbreis5407 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GraphicdesignforFree That is not quite true. In programming projects, too many cooks do spoil the broth. Adobe has had a lot of time, a lot of resources and programmers and has become mired in bureaucracy and tacked on features.
      Serif looked like it was going to make a fresh start with the Affinity Apps and redo the interface, which was very welcome, but seems quickly to have got caught up with trying to be an Adobe substitute and not quite achieving the promised house clean.
      Vectornator and Pixelmator have been much more successful at reinventing the wheel and getting rid of a lot of the cruft.
      Serif knows what they are doing but the prices do seem TOO low to maintain development. I think it would be fair to pay for major versions at the current price. So long as there are enough developments to justify upgrading, the income stream should fund progressive improvements.

    I have used adobe since 1997, I am switching over for 6 months I didn't renew the subscription. The indesign part is worrying. What do you mean by left to write text? If all your last files were of adobe, how's the file convertibility?

    • @bendesignsmedia
      @bendesignsmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Najeeb, some fonts particularly those that are for languages like Arabic and Hebrew write and read right to left, while most fonts for western languages like English and German write and read right to left. Affinity does not have support for right to left fonts making it difficult to do any work in those languages.
      File convertibility is not great. PSDs are mostly fine. For Illustrator things need to be converted into something like SVG and for InDesign you can open IDML files but not INDD files.

    I kinda feel like this sale was to get us in because of a new version coming and now we’re going to be charged for that. So yeas we’re saving money but in reality it’s probably going to still end up being the same when 2.0 is released. Yes, it’s still much cheaper then adobe but I’m still paying my Adobe subscription because I can’t make the switch 100% due to missing features. So in reality I spent an extra $150 and still paying the subscription I’m trying to avoid. @@bendesignsmedia Tracing in Illustrator is a big option I need. I do a lot of custom one off apparel printing and most often get small images submitted to me that I need to trace to a vector and scale larger or seperate colors. Without that feature I can't drop Adobe. I've tried using inkscape in the past but my workflow just staying in AI is faster. AI is pretty much what I use for 85% of my work. Hi Zacke,
      Sorry I haven't used Pixelmator Pro, I do use Pixelmator Photo on iPad, but that is more of a lightroom competitor than a photoshop one. I have heard a lot of people like Pixelmator Pro though. Maybe other commenters have more experience.

      @@bendesignsmedia thanks Ben! I've been using Pixelmator Pro for a while and I really like it, but I'm considering buying Affinity too (I've tried the free trial and it's less user friendly but seems to have more features). Just trying to see from experienced users if Affinity is worth the trouble learning if I'm already fairly proficient with Pixelmator Pro.

      @@sirzackefeller what can say is that Affinity Photo has the advantage of having Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher in its ecosystem which makes work between the programs (if you need that) really easy.

      I think Affinity Designer will be best for you, but they should be half off right now so you could get both of them for $20. If you really want to draw on iPad I wouldn't use Affinity, these programs can draw great, but Procreate is the best drawing app by far

    I am an Architect and a Photographer. My big question, which I haven't been able to find a good answer for yet, is if Affinity can also replace Adobe Lightroom. I'm pretty much sold on all of the Affinity products, I like not having to bounce between different formats and programs when I work between Layout, Vector, and Raster. So as an Architect, I'm happy, but as a Photographer, I need to reliably batch edit photos and create catalogs to keep everything organized. Can Affinity Photo replace Lightroom?

    • @bendesignsmedia
      @bendesignsmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Aaron, I've talked about this a little bit in some other videos, but the short answer is no, Affinity is not a Lightroom competitor. You can create macros, but it is not the same as real batch processing. Luminar is closest thing I have found to lightroom, but there are others like Darktable, Darkroom, and On-1-Raw. You can also stick with lightroom and just pay for the photography bundle instead of all of CC.

      There is a software (which I believe is free….I think haven’t tried it yet which I will be) called darktable. I’m in the same boat with you with photos cause I have like 300+ images that need editing and I can’t do that in photo as quick as Lightroom.

      @@tomfraser3086 Oh I see. So Gradients are applied using the fill tool (G) but you effect transparency on an object using the transparency tool (Y). You might need to use a combination of the two to get the effect you are going for. I won't be able to do a tutorial on it right away, but overlaying photos with text is something I do cover at the end of my intro course. Hi Jonathan, I haven't used Swift Publisher, it is on my list of things to test later in the year but it will probably be a while. But just looking at the little that I have it looks like an older program, it's UI reminds me a lot of iBooks Author actually. With Affinity Publisher being half off right now I would say go for that the difference is only $5 and Affinity Publisher is one of the best apps I have ever used. It is so much better than Microsoft Publisher that they should not even be compared!

      @@jonathanwatson7409 Affinity Photo is almost exactly like photoshop for most use cases, if you are familiar with Photoshop it shouldn't be hard to switch over.
      If you have all three you should be able to use StudioLink to get many of the Photo features in Publisher (Use the little purple icon at the top to switch to Photo persona)
      I'm not aware of a watermark feature in Publisher, but you should be able to easily make a watermark by placing an image, lowering the opacity and applying any effects you need. To do this to all pages use the master page feature.
