    Hi, I thought I would check in since doing this experiment (5 months after) - here is what I have kept up:
    - morning sunlight, it's fantastic! Plus I bought a daylight lamp for the winter.
    - Delayed caffeine, although I did only drink a green tea, now do after 2 hours
    - Sunset walks - season dependant (it's winter here so the sun sets early so not feasible)
    I work in 2-3 hour blocks as can get more done. It suits me better
    Yoga nidra is a tough one for me - once I'm in work, I'm in work. I know YN is great for extended energy and focus but it's tough to sit down and do it, and then tough to get up after.
    I do not take cold showers.
    It was a great experiment, and I am really pleased I did it.
    And I am pleased many people have enjoyed and gained value from this.

      Thanks for the update and the succinct list!
      I do have a tip/tweak, the cold showers should always be done before you work out unless you want to absolutely stay the same weight at the expense of greater work out gains. He talked about this in the episode on working out with Andy Galpin, I believe.
      Ps I can relate living in the northern usa, lol, I was like sunset walks? You mean at 9 pm here near the 45 parallel in May LOL, or in winter that is at like 5pm lol. But I am sure it is still beneficial if possible. I recall working masonry outside definitely was good for sleep this way.

I will try to incorporate the Andrew Hubermann routine for my body but i have already started the Laura Try 'Bright Spark' routine for my spirit ;) LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

    I’m 70 and have been dealing with Parkinson’s Disease for about 10 years. But I don’t sit around and pout about it. I exercise so much my neighbor thinks I’m training for Ironman. Huberman has been a great help. Along with Peter Attia. But I find that I need to get the exercise and other work done by 9am then get on with having a life. So much time can be spent reading about this stuff that one forgets that every day is a blessing and nothing says you get a tomorrow. Oh….and about the ice cold showers and baths…I’m a firm believer that right after God created Eve he made the gas-fired water heater.

      Do the breathing exercises of wim hof. There's a guy in youtube that has this small routines you can follow, mainly the vagus nerve reset one. We talk when u finish ur first one. 👌 I'm not a believer in these kinds of stuff but I have an auto immune disease so I tried it. Gods... even my skin got better. I do it everyday now.

    You can tell Huberman is a professor. I’m also a professor and I can’t think of another profession where you can do this schedule.Well unemployed, independently wealthy, or retired people can also do this.

      I can do it as I run my own business on Etsy but yeah my partner who works for a big corporation can't really make this work, even from home. It would be good to see an adapted one wouldnt it....

      LOL.. unfortunately the workout in the toxic blue light Wifi laden gym probably just wiped out any benefit of the am sunlight. Jack Kruse is much more knowledgeable would be much better to follow for all things health..
      Main thing is getting the am light - FIRST thing. And if I"m doing that , I'm not waiting 2 hours for coffee!

      Agree I have a few professors as friends and I see it, they have so much freedom. But with kids, jobs where everyone already leaves the house for school and work by 7:30 daily, fixed schedules, no homeoffice, a rainy region, the north: sun in the winter nonexistent, etc etc really hard.

      I think the point is that's what Huberman does. Everyone has their own routine and time constraints. And nothing will work for everyone. I think Laura is right. It's about what we might want to add to our own routine, different things to try out to see if we can have a better life.

      he does it allllll the time! We have now started making him his own glass each day which really makes me laugh. He has his own water bowl in the kitchen but that isn't good enough 😂 Love him! 🐈‍⬛

    Yoga Nidra teacher here, and to answer your question, it is okay to fall asleep during Yoga Nidra. It is evidently what your body needed in that moment but also as you continue to practise and experience it more, you will be able to remain awake in that potent space between waking and sleeping. Enjoy 🥰
    Also, thank you so much for such a great video! I had no idea who Andrew Huberman was 😅 but clicked and there are so many great takeaways. I feel like that first 90 minute session would be great for me as I find I can concentrate really well first thing but I need a couple of hours after waking for physical exercise. Thank you!

      When I meditate and do Yoga nidra I go into a sleep/wake state. It's like my body is asleep but I can hear everything going on around me and can even have lucid dreams. I don't know 😐 f this is good or not

      @@whoami1654 I would ask the question to yourself; does it feel good or not for you? Yoga Nidra helps to extend the time you spend in between sleep and awake (it is usually a few minutes when we fall asleep at night), so that point you describe where your body is asleep but your mind is awake. Extending this time can be very restful and relaxing for the body and this safe and relaxed zone can be a place to work with difficult emotions, memories and feelings. This is why Yoga Nidra has been proven in scientific studies to be helpful for treating PTSD and addiction. I have never attended lucid dreaming workshops but I do know teachers who host them, so there is a movement out there of people who are interesting in exploring lucid dreaming. I hope this helps! Remember, Yoga Nidra is a passive practice that happens to you, so there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to do it but, also, you are always in control of your practice; listen to how something feels for you, you truly are your own best teacher.

      When Huberman suggests staying awake during yoga nidra he's referring to doing the practice right after waking. He says if he feels he didn't get enough sleep during the night, he'll do 10 minutes of yoga nidra to make up for the sleep deficit. Early morning is when it's not beneficial to go back to sleep.

      I have insomnia and falling asleep is extremely difficult for me so I use Yoga Nidra to try and fall asleep and end up just doing it for hours and hours and never falling asleep. What is something better for getting to sleep than Yoga Nidra?

    This came up on my feed (as I was drinking coffee...10 minutes after waking ...and not at 0600). You are my new favourite person.       Do what makes you happy we are all different, I have coffee first thing for the taste and comfort not the caffeine and would feel odd without it. I have my breakfast about an hour later when hungry but don’t check the clock. As for naps and breaks at certain times. That isn’t normal life and Laura is very good at having humour in these tedious “routines”

    I walk backward on a regular basis. Especially after a run. I am a disabled veteran and have arthritic knees. People always look at me like I'm crazy. However, my knees hurt less because of this practice and I'm still able to go for a run, and also lift (be active).

      I have been told this is very helpful for arthritic knees, which I have. Going to try this going up all the stairs in my home, as it's a real nightmare.

      Check out kneesovertoesguy. The same can be done indoors when necessary by pulling a sled or turning around on a treadmill when it's left off.

    The backwards hill walking I read in a book called Peerless Jim. He was a Welsh-Irish boxer whose real name was Jimmy Driscoll. He was born in Cardiff around 1880 and sadly passed away in the 1920's. Part of his training routine was to run backwards up the top of a hill. The hill mentioned in his book is called Leckwith Hill on the outskirts of Cardiff; it's a big hill!
    I have cut out coffee , and as much caffeine as I possibly can. My anxiety has dropped to the point where I am getting 6 hours sleep. At one point I was only getting maybe as much as three hours every two to three days. I have kept to a routine of going to bed at around 11 at night, and waking up between 5 and 6 in the morning. This is slowly coming routine. I have been doing this for about 6 months. I think I saw something from Andrew Huberman which made me try it. I am functioning better, and I am sleeping better; meaning I am a better person to be around.
    I am not sure I would do the salty drink in the morning as my blood pressure was so high I was ending up in hospital; however, I do try and drink a decaf green tea or fruit/herbal tea. The change from coffee to herbal/fruit teas was not difficult, but I did find craving coffee for a little bit.
    I'm currently trying to reduce my intake of sugar; I have a terrible sweet tooth. I am trying to go without sugar for 30 days; well, more accurately, sweets, chocolate, cakes, etc, not fruit and products that might have sugars in them. I've done better than I thought, I have had one chocolate bar after 6 days; if did have fruit and nuts, so its compromise, 🤣🤣🤣
    I have lost my passion for exercise. I used to train all the time, now I do what I have to. However, in the last 2 weeks I have started to walk 6 miles every couple of days. I am walking to work which is taking about 2 hours. I'm hoping this will help me lose weight, bring down my horrendous blood pressure, and reignite my enthusiasm for exercise; plus, the summers coming, and we all feel better with a good bit of sun on us.
    And my paragraph is a thank you Laura, that was a great blog.

    This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my TH-cam channel 5 months ago about self development. Now I have 304 subs and almost > 100 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I couldn’t have learned without getting started in the 1st place.

    One more tip I want to add to your (amazing) video is about using sea salt for sodium instead of electrolyte powder: according to Coach Claire (@theplantedrunner), it's best to get your homemade sodium powder using a mix of salt and baking soda. Both baking soda and sea salt contain sodium, however, a component of sea salt stimulates the stomach to produce hydrochloride acid, while sodium bicarbonate neutralizes that same acid. Thank you so much for this video!

    9:30 he's spot on on this one. After studying biomechanics I realized you engage the quadriceps way better by walking backward on hill I started to do this myself.

    Very interesting! I've always had issues with insomnia and depression. About two weeks ago, I started getting up early (for me) and sitting outside right after sunrise based on what I was hearing on the Huberman Lab podcast. I have only had one night were I had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, but all nights, I've been asleep before 1am, where before I was struggling to get to sleep before 4am. It's a true game changer.
    It's also interesting that yerba mate has theophylline in it. That's what I was taking for asthma when I was a kid back in the 80s! I'm guessing that has as much to do with your workout boosts as the caffeine does as theophylline relaxes your airways.

    Congrats to your dad for hiking the Camino Frances! My husband and I hiked it a few years ago. 2 years later, we went back and completed the Norte route of the Camino. Hoping to do the Portuguese route next year. I realize it has nothing to do with your video, but I can’t help myself when it comes to the Camino! Love your videos ❤

    It's a good thing I came upon this video yesterday. I woke up this morning not feeling positive, but I changed that by having a bit of electrolyte drink, went on my balcony for some daylight, and then went for my backwards walk. (I think I've mentioned retro walking before in another comment). I managed to focus on some work as well. I always fall asleep listening to binaural beats I find on TH-cam, "subliminal suggestions" for anything. Today a friend texted me at the 30 min mark. It usually takes about 20 minutes to snap out of it but I feel refreshed after. I did exercises in the pool, replaces cold shower. I won't do the waking at 5h00 am, or the cold shower, but I will try to get the daylight in my eyeballs and continue to walk backwards. I've been doing that for a year, people are used to seeing me or I've gotten used to being stared at. It's an excellent practice, I used to have the tightest hamstrings and now that's gone. Good video.

    Love the way you present your videos. While Huberman's routine may be science based it is difficult for 9-5 workers to follow. However, some of the main points can be incorporated without expense, i.e. morning sun (latitude & commute time permitting), no caffeine for the first 2hrs, cold showers, evening walk, cool bedroom. I will be interested to see how long you can keep it all up for. Regards.

      Yeah. 9-5 is such an unhealthy way to live. Sitting all day under faking lighting in a stuffy office staring at a screen with constant interruptions so you can never really focus for long on anything so you're stopping and starting over and over - and then a rushed 30 minutes lunch break. Its awful.

      Take breaks during the day during the low points; then do some simple exercise and be sure to exercise different body parts each day so you don't over work and injure yourself. Such as a set of deep knee bends one day, then push ups the next. Take a siesta, they do this in France after a decent lunch. Then, later on in the afternoon, work in shorter intervals with breaks like stretching or walking for a few minutes. If you feel like sleeping, sleep; it is the way the brain sorts information and restores itself.

      Hi, I thought I would check in since making this video - here is what I have kept up:
      - morning sunlight, it's fantastic! Plus I bought a day light lamp for the winter.
      - Delayed caffeine, although I did only drink a green tea, but now do after 2 hours
      - Sunset walks - season dependant (it's winter here so the sun sets early so not feasible)
      I work in 2-3 hour blocks as can get more done. It suits me better
      I _do_ _not_ take cold showers.
      It was a great experiment, and I am really pleased I did it.

    Related to the falling asleep during Yoga Nidra, that is actually a very good sign! It's not really sleep, but rather a sign of complete relaxation. A state where you counscious mind is asleep, and your subconscious actually starts to listen and take charge, thus recharging your body and brain in as little as 20 minutes 😊

    2. I understand that testosterone is also important for women - in fact, I have a good/high level of testosterone (as seen in my blood test video). My remark about testosterone was more of a (bad) joke.
    3. I realise some/many people will not be able to do this routine due to work, children, or other commitments, however, my intention for sharing this (and I'm sure Huberman's reason for sharing his routine) was to give some basic things others can implement into their lives if they so wish.
    4. Something I wanted to include, but it got a bit complicated: My average sleep score over this 30-day experiment was 87, which is the highest the average has ever been!
    It was during this experiment that I consistently reached scores in the 90s, and got three 100s. I know the sleep trackers aren't totally accurate, however, I find them a good gauge, and after those 99 and 100 sleeps I really could tell they scored that high.
    I mainly used my Garmin Fitness watch to track my sleep as have worn that for 4 years.
    It was only after the experiment I got an UltraHuman Ring to hopefully track my sleep and stats more accurately for future experiments like this.
    5. It was 'No Mow May' when doing this experiment - hence the long grass. Letting all the bugs and insects have a great time. My cat Charlie loved it too, hiding and playing in the grass. Love him!

    I love watching your videos, Laura. I really appreciated that you made this one. Thank you! But I think I'll personally give most of this a miss.
    What I already do: getting morning light every day; exercising daily (alternating resistance & cardio); deep working in blocks. (I do 25 minutes then a 5 minute break and a 20-minute break every 2 hours, but might try this schedule instead); a daily 30-minute afternoon power nap.
    What I don't understand: how do you do the morning light first thing in winter (when it's not light here until nearly 10am) or an evening sunset walk (when it's sunset at 4pm)?
    What I don't think I'll try: I think I'll give caffeine on a completely empty stomach a miss (it makes me nauseous); cold showers (I just can't bring myself to do it) and the cold bed thing. I definitely sleep better when I'm relaxed and cozy. Also, I don't have a convenient nearby hill.
    It also occurs to me that this routine is all work and no play. It doesn't encourage you to use the evenings to see friends, go dancing, go out to eat, go to your choir or chess club (talking about things I like to do personally). It seems potentially lonely for a single person.

    I have yet to see anyone stick to doing cold showers after their challenge/trial is over and I can understand that cause cold water in many countries is really freaking cold. I live in a hot climate so cold showers, although still not my ideal water temp to bathe in, aren't ice cold like in other parts of the world. Great video and I loved seeing all of the local animals. I've tried the sunlight in the morning and paired that with a walk and it really does help wake me up in the morning.

      I am from a country where the water gets really cold in winter it can be -5 or more and I am taking cold showers for a couple of years now, also it doesn't need to be that long just 2-3 minutes is enough. Also I would recommend to start in June and then continue so that you get used to the water temperature getting colder and colder that makes it easier to maintain the habit.

      I finished my showers with cold water for many years, and now since a bit more than 2 years I only take cold showers, every day, and the water is really cold here. Sometimes, maybe when I am traveling I can take a hot shower or bath too, when I want to feel like I am doing a wellness trip 😃

    The morning light thing has been hugely transformative for me. Glad it's working for you. Johnsonesque sleep scores! Most Impressive.
    I think you've misunderstood Huberman with regard to the 90 minute Ultradian cycles. They occur at different times of the day for each of us. He talks about keeping those one or two specific time blocks sacred and reserved for the most important focused and creative work of the day. In his podcast on Ultradian cycles he notes that very, very few people have three or more of these highly focused blocks. It may be that you do better working out first thing (30 min after waking). What works for Handsome Hubes may not be the best fit for you. Experiment. See what works.

    This is such an important basic understanding of optimized existence. When I have focused on well managed sleep, daily sunlight exposure, modest exercise/regulated/stimulated breathing I definitely feel better. But I do need reminders to return to best habits because life pulls me away from best intentions.

    Trying to get myself moving and more energetic- some days are great and others I just feel so weighed down! Really liked your video but it is tough not only for those with stricter schedules and meetings, but those with kids! The dogs will follow me wherever I go, but the kids mean you just don't have as much control. Still good tips I'm going to try to mix in. I like how digestible you made the Huberman tips!

      @@zlmdragon.I run every other morning and gym the other and I’ve noticed no negative impact. I’d say most importantly make sure you’re warmed up and do your lifts with proper mechanics and you’re very likely ok. Stuart McGill is great for spine health if you have issues.

    I love the Yoga Nidra technique as it's very effective yet 7 minutes is easy enough to do and commit to. I'm trying cold showers interspersed with hot as the Swedish folks do, yet now I learn here it's better to just do cold showers or an immersion bath. You've actually encouraged me to try immersion baths even though my whole being repels from the idea alone. Love the backward walking as my knees at 71 are complaining. Thank you.
    Oatmeal ! Good god, one of the worst Never foods processed stuff. I ate this long cooking breakfast for yrs till I realized the Autoimmunity was increased eating all cabs including OATMEAL! No Grains and No seed oils or dairy for this Autoimmune gut and body.

      Thank you for sharing your experience of living in the tropics. I relate to this very much in the summer months. I'm living in a flat on the sixth floor under the roof in Central Germany and in summer, it's impossible to get my bedroom below 27°C and it really impacts my quality of sleep. Because of structural issues, I can't have air conditioning installed, or else I would go down to 20°C. Fans are a life saver though. The buildings here are not built for the hotter climate we are getting. Temperature during the day inside is over 30° and at some point past midnight, I get down to 27 or 28 which allows me to fall asleep eventually. Needless to say, it doesn't help at all if you want to stick to early bedtimes because it's like trying to go to sleep in a sauna. The good thing is that I am a night-owl and my most productive time is the evening until about midnight or 1 am. It's just not very socially acceptable to be a night-owl :(
      The video was fun to watch, I think I'll try the salt water or electrolyte drink in the morning. Especially now with sweating a lot more in summer, I probably need that.

    Great video. I learned a lot from your review of the routine. Excited to try a few of the things in the routine. The salt water for one. I already get up and drink a glass of water. Hadn’t thought to add electrolytes or some sea salt but makes perfect sense. I am going to try delaying caffeine too. Realized that I’ve gotten too deep in the vicious cycle of caffeine consumption

    I wasn't expecting to watch this entire video but Laura is such a pleasant, determined and admirablr woman. I share her love of nature and animals, so it really hit home. And she is in AMAZING shape.I already lead a very disciplined life because of chronic illness, but will be trying some of these new techniques soon. The Yerba Mate is definitely doable. I already know how important it is for my bedroom to be cold - I aim for 66F. Will be trying the cold showers - even if I can only tolerate 30 seconds 🥶

    Great video! I do some of this, especially the light first thing but I do it with my cup of coffee. I’ll have to dig in a bit to see if it’s worth a change. The walks after dinner watching the sun go down are key for us. We also eat plant based which is different. I’m always looking to learn something new

      Woo hoo! me too - far better to have the coffee than wipe out all the benefits of the am sun with the toxic blue light lit and Wifi and nnEMF laden gym!

    I don't work at home... so some of this cannot be done. I also can't sleep in the cold, I would be up all night.I sleep best in the warmth.

    18:24 The biggest take away for me from this video is how much of my life involves constant (and I do mean constant) interruptions! 😂😂 As a wife and mom who works (in an office 5 days a week) - there is no way I could follow this schedule. 😢😢😢

    Love your videos! You are the female version of Bryan Johnson blueprint! There are so many men in the „optimal health“ space but almost no women, so it’s great to see you!
    One thing that strikes me is how incompatible all these health routines seem to be for parents with small children. My mornings are spent running around cajoling kids to comb hair brush teeth and pack snacks. Walking them to school does get me exposure to early morning sunlight and, if we’re running late I guess thst speed walk counts towards zone 2 cardio right??😅
