This was a scary video to publish because 'supplements' is a tricky subject and I know there will be many opinions and thoughts about the amount I’m taking/was taking.
I want to make it clear, I saw this as an opportunity to do a 12-month experiment. When I get my blood & stool retest done in 2 months, I will report back with my findings.
Also, bear in mind, doing this kind of stuff is my job and I feel as though I would have done a dis-service if I did a half hearted experiment.
With me doing this experiment and making this video, this isn’t me suggesting everyone needs to do something like this. My hope is that by me doing it, I can find out some stuff then pass it onto you.
Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the video and gain value from it.
With so much conflicting information out there about supplements, I really want to test all this out and see if I could get the bottom of all the conflicting advice. I’m not doctor and don’t have access to a laboratory, but I consider myself a bit of a human guinea pig.
I spend my own money on all these tests and supplements, and dedicate a lot of time and energy to working on these projects. So I just hope you can gain value from it, even if you don’t see my point of view.
There’s so much information I could have included in this video, but it would have gone on for too long. I will include other stuff as I go along with this series of videos investigating my health with alternative therapies and methods.
    Much love x

To me the message was clear. I don't see it as an experiment, just a holistic treatment as you explained in the video. It sounds like a lot but you did that with a professional.
I think the result/summary video will be very interesting.

My vitamin d was at 19 and my iron was really low, I had all the same problems that you described, I felt horrible most of the days, terrible periods, no energy, felt super depressed and helpless. But, since correcting the 2 deficiencies, I’m a new person, now I feel I can do anything and feel super energised. And this was through a normal GP, we tested 1 month and I went back in 3 months and they were all good, but since that happened 6 months ago I feel that I still getting better everyday, and now that I have the energy, I’m really trying to look after myself, adding exercises, acupuncture, went to a dietitian and a health coach. I cannot even believe that I’m the same person, and how such a thing that was so easy to correct hold me down for so long.

Have you started reading into menopause? I'm 44 and a biochemist, hence i love reading the research, one thing I'm happy to see is that the topic over the last few years sparked some interest, but also was super surprised at how little we know about female physiology and hormones.
Over the last few months I've started to pay more attention to my cycle and being able to connect some of the science to my mood, strength and overall wellbeing is quite fascinating

@@LauraTryUK I went into permenopause at exactly 41. I was on the pill but started getting sweats during the 1 week break. I also started getting painful sacroiliac joint pain. When i stopped taking the pill the sweats disappeared but this was only temporary and returned. A doctor mentioned the menopause and i thought he was being out of order. When i was 42 i had a fertility test as i was making a last ditch attempt to have a baby. There were not enough eggs even to try IVF. It then became obvious that the doctor that i'd scoffed at was right. The sweats continued on and off and then at 49 came the brain fog and that's when i sought out HRT. I'm 52 now and I realise I've been going through this for 11 years. I'd had so much anxiety over those years too.
I hope you're not going through this yet, but it is possible. I'm so pleased you're feeling better though :)

Thank you for the comprehensive video on this topic! It was fascinating to see the lab results and Phil's recommendations for your supplement plan. As someone who similarly supplements (due to much research after diagnosis of several autoimmune conditions, and with my health care provider's knowledge and agreement, and sometimes her specific suggestions, though she also understands I have an educational background in related topics), I have seen vast improvements in my health and quality of life over the past several years. At 50, I feel like I'm in the best health and condition of my life. In my 20's, getting out of bed for university and then my job was a struggle. Now I hike, backpack, lift weights, garden, and have raised 5 children. Thankful for all there is to learn in this area, and how it can impact peoples' lives for the better, when done correctly!
One side note-if you can access your city's water analysis information, you may be able to tell if there is lithium present. This could potentially impact your levels, especially if it's not there, due to the particular water source or how it's treated. I will probably not eliminate my personal supplementation of that unless I move to an area where I know it's present in the water.

I used to take supplements too (not 51 a day though), but I realized we simply can't know how much of each element our body needs each day, it depends on 1000th of factors. Therefore eating nutrient-dense food is the most safe and natural way for me to eat. The only supplement I take is iodine because we live in the iodine-deficient region. But all other is present in red meat, fat, fish, cheese, eggs...these are all we need really. Anyway, thank you for your work!

This was such a great video, LT. I’ve followed your health journey for a while. I was saddened though to hear about your struggle with depression. I’m so glad you kept it in your video as many people feel like that, but mental health is still a bit of a tricky one for folk to open up about.
What did shock me was how your standard GP blood test came back normal. How many people must be suffering, as you were, and not have the resources to get professional help. Bloodwork in other countries includes hormone testing, it’s about time the UK caught up. Then people can be given help and control of their health via lifestyle and education. It’s crazy that most people are in that feedback loop of a 10 minute GP appointment and big pharma medication. But some of that is patient-led; folk want a quick fix, don’t want to make changes as you have. Or have the financial resources, so it’s a complex issue.
I always look forward to your videos and can’t wait to see your updates - the combination of improved diet, supplements and strength training has transformed you ❤

I was told they really should go hand in hand and I started this because bloodwork showed my D levels as low, even though I do spend time in the sun, my body just doesn't absorb it properly. I have considered taking berberine, because my cholesterol is high and I don't want to start a statin (my body has always just produced a lot, regardless of my weight or diet but the numbers have increased since menopause).

I find this so confusing. Thinking about it, all your deficiencies seem to stem from low stomach acid. So what caused that?
I don’t understand why we should need this much nutrition seeing as the average calorie intake for weight Maintenance and in hunter gatherers is around 2400 to 2000 for a woman. With that many you can only cram in so much high nutrient food. Even if you didn’t eat any junk food at all you will struggle. I know because I too used to use Chronometer. It drove me crazy and I ended up eating too many calories to get all green ticks.
I think the recommended goals must be wrong. We all know people who eat a very limited diet but are healthy and happy. Eating more animal protein probably helped your deficiencies but getting enough folate and other micronutrients requires you to eat far more nuts and or leafy greens than is ever seen in any free eating population. Something is wrong there. Same with calcium. To get ‘enough’ you have to eat a ton of dairy. What about the millions who are lactose intolerant?
I only take D3 and only recently since I used to live in the tropics. I give my husband krill oil since he won’t eat fish. I have found a lot of supplements (and I have used them) cause bad side effects. Omega 3 made cuts bleed too freely, Creatine gave me awful gastric problems, magnesium can make you sleepy in the daytime. Progesterone makes me dizzy and achy and miserable. It’s not necessarily a free ride.
I am deeply suspicious of these people who sell tests and then prescribe supplements and retests and consultations. It’s a business.
Also you changed your diet radically over the last year to have a lot more protein and took up weight training. Those two things could explain all the benefits. Basically you changed so many things you can’t really know what was the key change you needed to make.
Maybe Phil can enlighten us? Although he doesn’t look too healthy does he?

Thanks for such an interesting video on a sometimes confusing topic and I’m glad you’re feeling so healthy now. I’ve always felt okay and had good diet and exercise but I started to add a few extra supplements into my diet about a year ago. Mostly D & K, B6 &12, magnesium, cod liver oil, and creatine. I also added green powder, fibre and a daylight lamp as I get up so early. I’m quite conservative in the dosages but feel amazing now and haven’t any plans to add any more, soon I’ll put the D and the lamp away for the summer as I work outside. I agree it’s better to head off health problems early if possible - I’m pleased that my GP has no idea who I am yet

Your approach to get your health/nutrition verified with hard data is awesome - its such a refreshing contrast to most "I don't know but I use common sense and I'm sure that..." people. Combining ignorance with supplements is always dangerous!

You're not alone. Millions of people have been sold on supplements from youtubers because the medical doctor have let them down. Most people have the same symptoms as you and we were chasing symptoms not the cause which is our food and gut. Great video

In 2022 I did something here called Nutrition Response Testing. No blood work involved so it is very non scientific but I had to give it a try. They test you in a laying of hands sort of way and then recommend supplements based on their findings. It could just be a sly way to sell supplements. I was taking about half as many per day as you. After 9 months I stopped as though I felt it may have been helping a bit I slid back into my spells. The nutritionist there called me a nutrition superstar based on my diet which I maintain. A year or so later working with my doctors and a new specialist I seem to be making positive progress. Wishing you continued success and well being!

I'd say everyone needs a little handful of them. Modern water and soil and therefore modern food is often divoid of many nutrients. Other factors like modern life and location leave you lacking in nutrients like vitamin d or even block absorption of others; one example being magnesium requirements are higher is many people taking various common medications... This on top of the fact that magnesium is one mineral less abundant today than it used to be.

But, great video, I take a fair few supplements ( I’ve studied Naturopathy at uni) but to be honest, it’s still a bit of guesswork. I’d love to get the testing done like you, but I can get a few done by the doctors ( on Medicare) in Australia. Hi there Laura, As a long-time subscriber, I just wanted to say that I love your channel!
I'm really interested in doing the Phil Richards lab tests and consultations. However, I couldn't help but notice that the person diagnosing the health issues is also the one selling the remedy Eg. The supplements. It seems like most, if not all, the supplements mentioned in the videos are from Phil Richards' shop, rather than being sourced from other places like Amazon as mentioned in your first video.
I'm really eager to do the tests, but I can't help feeling a bit skeptical about this setup. Are my concerns valid? I would love to hear your (or anyone elses) thoughts on this matter. Cheers

    • @LauraTryUK
      @LauraTryUK  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi, thank you for your comment and questions.
Yes, I can see your concern.
When I had my first blood test and made that video I was taking supplements Phil recommended - I bought most of them from the internet like Amazon and a few other places.
Since then, given Phil's work and business, he set up his own supplement company so:
      1. He could use top-quality ingredients in his products - bio-available, organic where possible
      2. Know the source of the ingredients
      3. Blend supplements with other ingredients for best absorption
      4. Know the dose of each supplement
      5. Know each supplement inside out so he knows what his clients are taking
      6. And of course, earn money from the supplements he recommends to his clients, rather than directing them to a plethora of Amazon sellers (some of which aren't the _exact_ supplements he wants them to take because the _exact_ supplement doesn't exist on the market)
      Does that all make sense?
To some, it could sound as though I stick up for Phil, but having worked with him for over a year now, and he is also working with some friends of mine, I can see his interest is entirely on helping people get in good health.
Some people are sceptical of that, and I can understand that as there are so many scammers, wideboys and BS marketing out there. But this guy is the real deal.
I hope all that makes you feel better about getting tested.
If you didn't want to take his supplements, he wouldn't care, he would say get them from Amazon. His focus is on his client's health.

Laura, you are doing great and you don't need to justify anything to anyone! You have made the intent of this video crystal clear. You could have included a dozen more comments about how you are taking that dose as a result of a blood test or how you have paid for everything yourself and some people would have still been triggered by the amount of supplements you are taking. I am fairly sure most of your recent critics have never found themselves in the physical and mental state that you were in before you decided to make those drastic lifestyle changes. I hope that you will still have the confidence to talk about controversial topics in the future whenever you want to and that you can fight the urge to please everybody. While constructive criticism should always be welcome, you can definitely trust your own judgement to assess whether some people are just overreacting. :)

I had an experience as a kid growing hydroponic basil for fun. This basil sat on my windowsill and within a short time was so big it filled my entire window like a shrub. I had never seen basil grow like that! My mind was blown and I wondered how it was possible. I came to the conclusion that this plant was getting everything it needed in high doses from the fertiliser I was giving it. It was thriving! And it made me wonder ever since, what do humans need to thrive like that? Obviously what we eat must make a huuuuge difference to whether we thrive like the basil in my window or just struggle, like a basil not looked after properly.
I do wish I had the money to get a full blood test and advice like this, I think it would be the key to so many things.

This was very interesting especially the part about your thyroid being under active but not being picked up by a Doctors test cause I have had many symptoms for years that seem to point to that but whenever they test they say it's normal. Laura, thanks again for bringing us through another really comprehensive video into your commitment to health. I love how you break it all down and with your videos 50 minutes is never too long! I’m wondering how your body became so deficient with some minerals such as magnesium as you were quite healthy and active before the blood tests? Did Phil investigate this? I’m at the stage where the blood tests with my GP is ok except that I have hypothyroidism but I have a lot of symptoms similar to you and I eat well and exercise. After watching this I know I now need more comprehensive testing, at least I know lots of people feel this way too.
