The All-New 2019 Toyota RAV4 Is Better, but Will it Be the Best? | Edmunds

  • Edmunds Senior Vehicle Test Engineer Jason Kavanagh headed to Carmel, California, to be among the first to drive the all-new 2019 Toyota RAV4. One of the best-selling vehicles in the USA, this right-sized two-row crossover has improved fuel economy, a nicer cabin, more features and slightly sharper dynamics than its predecessor. It's bound to be another sales smash.
    Q: When will the 2019 Toyota RAV4 go on sale?
    A: The RAV4 will start showing up in dealerships in December.
    Q: What kind of engine does it have?
    A: All RAV4s have a 2.5-liter non-turbocharged four-cylinder that's found in nearly identical form in the Camry. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic that drives the front (or optionally, all four) wheels. There's also a hybrid model.
    Q: How much will it cost?
    A: The base 2019 Toyota RAV4 will start at $26,545 (including destination) and climb to just over $40,000 for a hybrid model in top Limited trim, equipped with all options.
    Q: What does it compete against?
    A: The 2019 Toyota RAV4's main rivals are the Honda CR-V, the Mazda CX-5 and the Nissan Rogue.

    Yes, just test drove the 2019 RAV4 Adventure Trail version. Unfortunately engine noise is too loud and really didn’t settle down on highway. Toyota totally neglected to put any insulation on the underside of the hood, let alone the engine bay and firewall. I liked the vehicle in general during my 30 minute test drive, including 10 minutes in fairly deep snow where the RAV4 handled very well, with no sounds of traction control or VSC deploying. A few complaints. 1. The digital display is hard to read in bright sunlight, especially with sunglasses on. I cranked up the lighting on the digital display but it was quite limited compared to other Toyota’s that I’ve driven in the past. Also the numbers on the speedometer are simply too small, which may cause me to receive speeding tickets. I wish Toyota would put a larger digital number, similar to the Honda CRV, so that one could see the speed at a glance. Either that or a heads up display similar to the CX3. Otherwise the digital display has relatively small font, really hard to apprehend what is happening at first blush and would require more memorization of the layout.
    2. The backseat only folds down 90-95% and did not offer a fully flat surface such as the Honda CRV.
    3. Front seat access is somewhat cumbersome due to the forward slant of the A pillars. I wish one could just simply step/slide into it like a pick up truck. I found myself ducking my head which I don’t know if I want to do an ongoing basis.
    4. Road noise and engine noise, as mentioned earlier, was surprising and disappointing. I seriously wanted to buy a RAV4 but I will hold off till the fall of 2019 with the hope that Toyota implements actual insulation in the engine bay in the 2020 version to quiet down the engine. I simply think it’s not fair that I should have to spend $1000-$1500 for aftermarket sound insulation to be installed by an outside vendor. Otherwise, I will have to look at a Subaru product (CVT might be a disappointment?) or the Honda CRV (also a CVT plus tiny little 1.5 turbo engine that may not last beyond 6-8 years without major maintenance?). The CX 5 was nice but cargo space was limited.
    I really wanted the RAV4 to work as it, and the Subaru, are largely the only mid-priced models with more advanced AWD systems versus simply conventional front/rear AWD systems. I travel lots of long road trips across USA and Canada, so I want peace and quiet, not a whole lot of engine noise and road noise coming up through the body of the vehicle. Hopefully Toyota will remedy this for 2020. Otherwise sadly I will have to look elsewhere.

      If Toyota would make this thing quiet then I'd be more interested. For me, I'm waiting for the '20 Outback although the CVT gives me pause.

      Kurt Grundel I’ve never owned either or, but Mazda reputation around here is not the best, and it shows in the streets, you don’t see Mazda a often as other brands. In any case I guess that he should have included reliability facts, most people would buy something reliable over something with better interior materials and better handling

    • @kurtgrundel4045
      @kurtgrundel4045 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good point Emil. Honda, Toyota, and Subaru have many more dealerships in my area too. Mazda is one of the smallest auto companies and in order to survive they strive to be good. When I visited Australia it appears Mazda is more popular than Toyota so distribution has a lot to do with popularity. I feel a bit smug because I’m enjoying my car without being one of the many driving the US’s most popular car.

      That is just stupid - I guess a man can drive a Tesla model 3 because it doesn't have big tires or a mean looking grill or big enough? • @kevinrobinson8474
      @kevinrobinson8474 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Donald Duck- Then I guess you would not like to drive a Tesla either - The RAV4 looks like almost all the other Toyota's now which is good and bad depending on how you look at it the fact is the RAV4 is not an exciting SUV to drive at all - great if you want to haul kids back to the soccer field but No who has ever reviewed a RAV except in the V6 model which you have not been able to get for many years looks happy driving one. I dare you to even get in and drive the non-turbo version of the CX-5 let alone the turbo version and say you would rather drive a RAV or a Honda for that matter there simply is NO comparison and it isn't even close.

    • @kevinrobinson8474
      @kevinrobinson8474 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Donald Duck- You should just so you know and you don't have to buy the Turbo - but it really is about the same cost as the higher level Toyota trim - another huge difference is the seats in the CX-5 they are fantastic - I bought the CX-5 Touring edition with the premium package - but now there are 4 trim levels (sport, Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, Signature) - the seats are different on each trim level but all are comfortable.

I guess they crap out in 30-40 k miles, and it costs $1500+ to replace because the engine must be pulled to get to the pump. I believe it. That engine is shoehorned into that bay.

    It makes no sense that even in the Limited trim you can't get a badly needed power front passenger seat. Nor is there an option for leather interior. Despite the cost and the broad appeal of the RAV4, Toyota corporate must still consider this an econobox rather than a downsized Highlander.

After half a dozen requests for a buyback, and a vehicle out of service for over four months, Toyota finally agreed four weeks ago to “investigate.” Their conclusion is that these are “normal operating characteristics.” Buyer beware - Toyota quality is gone and they’re not the ethical company they used to be. I can’t believe they are going to make me sue them to try to get my money back on a vehicle that all in cost me over $47k, when they didn’t deliver what I contractually purchased. Fraud.

      Noisy, definitely. But I actually prefer the vegan leather Toyota uses. The RAV4 has the same leatherette type used in the older Lexus models like the RX, in which the leatherette is just as supple imo but it doesn’t get as heated in the summer or as cold in the winter as real leather and I like that. On top of that it won’t fade or crack as much as real leather which is a plus when you plan to keep it long term and drive a lot.
