i feel like deleting social media only works for people who have real life friends. i have no friends and my only human connection is online. if i deleted instagram i wouldn't be able to talk to anyone at all and while i'm trying to find real life friends, it's not that easy. finding people to party with is easy, but finding a real connection is not.

Right, you only should make the change if you actually want to make the change and feel like you’d be better without social media. If you feel connected and it makes you happy then that’s awesome

I also don't have any “REAL friends,” but deleting my social media has worked for me because now I can have a REAL connection with the people I meet in the REAL world.
There is a lot of "real" in this comment because I think that's the most important word here. Social media is just a simulacrum of real life, and I don't think we really need it.

probably if you delete you will make real connections because it will be the only choice left for you but again social media is always available at wish.

I have no friends irl, just my family but deleting social media has helped my mental health a ton. I feel more connected to the people in my life and have learned to deal with having alone time without feeling sad.

Really cool video, Im glad this was recommended to me. I actually deleted social media for the same reasons you did, and Im typing this on a youtube browser on my phone because I deleted the yt app too so I don’t get sucked into shorts either haha. I really liked hearing about your experience in becoming a better reader and how it was easier to start off slow instead of jumping into something complex and getting discouraged when you have trouble with it, and giving up. I feel guilty for wanting to read romance often, and my ego tells me that it’s not “real literature “ which I know is just me being hard on myself and it stops me from even reading sometimes when I want to!!! I still struggle with feeling alone a lot but I can say gladly that the times I have relapsed and created a new instagram or whatever, that it didn’t solve any of my loneliness issues and actually made me feel more isolated. So I know I just have to stay strong and learn to enjoy my own company and love myself. I want to fall back in love with learning as well when I go back to school next year. I definitely recommend trying to delete social media to everyone if they get the inkling thinking about it. It does suck feeling alone for a bit, and I literally only have two friends who I don’t even talk to that much, but opening the space for yourself to be able to create who you are and not just watch other peoples lives go by, like you talked about, is truly a journey that is worth it. ❤️ Also you are so pretty by the way!

Lmaoooo i so relate to the TH-cam in the browser 💀 and don’t feel guilty for wanting to read romance. Those books can actually make you FEEL so giddy, happy, and excited-isn’t that the hallmark of good art? Read whatever makes you feel good.
As for the rest, recognizing how social media affects you personally is the first step to any change. It takes time but if you try a little every day it adds up in the long run. I believe in u.
And thank you ☺️for the compliment

I got tiktok in 2019, i never had vine so it was my first exposure to short form addictive content. That initial experience combined with the early lockdown was genuinely like using substances.I only truly began to realize the potential harm in like 2021. I relate to this vid, and find it very valuable.

I see like some other comments I got this in my recommendations - like others have said I relate a lot and I know this is a book channel but I also found reducing social media usage made me read way more
I'm still absolutely addicted to Reddit, Insta, TH-cam and now using BlueSky/Threads but deleting Twitter from my phone has changed my life tbh. And I started reading again which I've been terrible at for years - feels like my brain is less full and now I want to do it in my spare time where when you're reading social media all the time that can feel exhausting
but anyway I enjoyed the video and your perspective! :) (now my recommended tab is all other creators talking about quitting so that's something to binge 😂)

i do feel (and appreciate) that you seem to speak with a desire to understand yourself first and present it second, as opposed to the inauthenticity you mentioned that might result from anticipating the rewards of a large audience and panic a person into putting thoughts of presentation first, so i also think your emotional immune response against social media was healthy and not harmful negativity. 🥰
also, i read a book on the romantic painter eugene delacroix, who was very interested in capturing a felt stimulus rather than a "perfect" object, and he complained that the advances of the industrial revolution (railroads, telegraph lines) were conquering "space but not boredom." so i laughed at that-we have conquered boredom and now rather need tidier relationships with our inhibitions to manage the noise of overstimulation! 😅

I have successfully made it three years with no Instagram, but I have gone back to Twitter and I occasionally download TikTok so I can make videos for my TH-cam shorts 😭 life is so long that even a four year hiatus can come to an end. It’s all about finding a balance and fighting the distractions that come w social media. Best of luck on your journey, a month is a great start!

It’s hard in this day and age to not want/like/have social media. I’ve never been someone who liked social media much nor could I naturally take pictures of things I’m doing or what I’m drinking. I take pictures of beautiful things but the older I got, the more I felt this pressure that I needed to get the perfect picture for instagram. So much so that the whole experience of going to a new place of seeing a new thing I had this anxiety in the pit of my stomach. No one was forcing me but it felt as if that was the expectation? That’s what everyone did and so that was the standard. I even started to get anxious about posting on my story and figuring out what to post consumed my thoughts and I was getting burnt out. I just remember thinking, ‘this is supposed to be fun..’, I remember stacking up my books and retaking the picture several times over because it just ‘didn’t look right’ and That was when I stopped myself. It felt inauthentic; like a performance. I was wasting hours of my life watching other people also curate their lives and even some of my friends’ stories started to feel fake which sounds bad to say but whenever I asked how it was or how fun it looked the response was always ‘don’t believe everything you see’. So I thought, why are you doing it then? My friend said she feels she can’t live without it and I knew then that the majority of us Gen.Z are not well equip to do the ‘in moderation’ thing. We’re too far gone. Over the past few years I’ve slowly just delete my profiles and it felt like a breath of fresh air. I still have TikTok but I use it maybe one fortnightly. I’ve found that my anxiety has reduced substantially. I don’t think I can casually use instagram because I could just see the toll it had on my mental health. I sometimes miss seeing my friends’ private stories but they started to make the effort to send me pictures of what they were doing and I’ve done the same. These pictures have meaning now and I know they care compared to a Picture I have meticulously crafted just to get the ‘perfect’ shot.

    • @bookpogo

Precisely. Instagram is the one app I know I will never go back to. Plus it’s so focused on being a marketplace that it has completely lost the charm it once had. It’s a good thing to be free from 🙌

Something really terrible happened to me in July of 2023 where, due to a rapid medication taper I've been experiencing intense pain in my forehead. before this I had read 52 books. had no trouble feeling listless and had a fine relationship with my social media accounts. now I'm forced to use audiobooks and I'm finding that, as engaged as I can be during some of the performances (like The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis recently) I still go on my phone and check my social media accounts and basically... check out. It's pretty awful. this video is helpful. there is a real pressure to just keep the accounts. even if you don't deactivate them, to delete the apps off tour phone and then, if you so choose, sign back in. idk. thanks for sharing. you seem very attentive to the details of your life.

great video. i say the same thing about youtube shorts, i'm glad it sucks so bad or else it would be just as addicting as Tiktok and Reels. i'm stil trying to find the balance between social media and not social media; it feels like the second i allow myself even a little bit i get sucked in. it's ok though, i'm learning myself and that means coming to terms with the fact that i'm easily susceptible to instant gratification in any form

I feel like I found you so accidentally, at 23:42 Irish time- literally throwing away my time on TH-cam. I have deleted instagram 3 weeks ago but I left TH-cam on my phone for uploading videos which still catches me sometimes ugh- not even reels … I haven’t clicked any reels or shorts in three weeks. That is something I stuck by. It’s so lovely to find a fellow person who also felt that they stopped reading … I knew there is a love there but I’ve been so consumed by what I consume and it’s been great to step back. I hope to continue observing your journey without social media as I move forward on this journey of mine
