Live in the Moment: Delete Social Media | Ryan Thomas | TEDxAshburnSalon

  • The integration of social media into everyday life has increased dramatically in recent years. Most view it as a positive driving force for social change; however, the over-saturation of social-media driven information in society has become a negative influence with far reaching consequences on the way we interact and work. Ryan Thomas is a senior at Loudoun County High School. He intends to run track in college while pursuing an Ivy-League level education. Ryan is motivated by the impact that he believes he can have on society, and is always striving to be his best. After deleting social media, Ryan was able to see the world in a different light and immediately noticed a positive change in his life. He is an unshakable optimist, and believes that there is always opportunity for change, which he wants to help bring to people’s lives. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have taken long breaks, but when I go back to it, I feel progessively worse and concerned with it in the back of my mind all the time. I am finally taking the plunge and deleting it for good - as soon as my "self control" app lets me back on there. During my breaks, I feel much better, more peaceful. I do have a fear of missing out on potential video art gigs, but the truth is, I don't do that many and I will get more art made without it and go from there...

Wow. This is so true. I passed a day without social media and then I came back the other day saying ''you know, I am in control, I am gonna use it just 30 minutes'' (lol) and then BOOM, 3 hours straight. It is true I was talking with a friend and laughed a lot, but is also true that I came back to checking others' lives and my mood instantly changed for bad. I deactivated my Facebook and Twitter accounts but I'm really attached to Instagram.

Hannah I deleted all socials (excluding WhatsApp which I hardly use) The best thing for me was my self esteem is coming back, my depression has dropped about 80%, I am less anxious and I have more time to read, watch or do something. I will say the only saddest part is realising that you have hardly any friends or family well that’s my case but it may not be for you. Once you leave and FOMO lasts a couple weeks. I’d say give yourself 30 days of no social media and see if you are happy at 30 days. Keep a messaging app if that helps you :)

Life without social media is peaceful. When you stop eyeing everything on what your friends do, what they are upto, what's going on in some random celebrity's life, it just wastes our time and we grow restless with time.

... and we were MUCH happier; much saner; not afraid of going out without looking HD-ready; once we left school or work for the day, we left it, and our classmates/colleagues behind for the evening.
When i was a kid, we had to ask permission to make a 30-second phone call on our home phone, which was not wireless, so you had to talk to your friend with your parents right there.
And, if somebody rang up, and you didn't want to talk to them for whatever reason - busy, tired, sick, whatever - you could just tell your mother or whoever picked up the call, "Tell her I'll see her at school tomorrow". And it was fine!

To polish out the bad parts, "post" it on a page and show the world how pretty we are...with filters? And why do we have to be reminded NOT to " Post" while sitting in the movie theater waiting for the movie to start? I see it as Aldous Huxley's version of hypnotic control over the masses, as well. Recently, after taking a break and going back on, I had the revelation that I am just part of an ever-passing, very temporary, and massive stream of mostly time-wasting information passing by, and I don't want to be part of that.

I've never had Fb or Snapchat. When I see someone that I haven't see in a while or meet new friends, always asked me if I Fb or Snapchat, or Instagram. I told them no, and they are always surprise. They never called or text me as if we shouldn't call or text any more. I personally would like to get together with friends. Just chatting or go for a walk. Oh well, that's all fine with me. I don't need to feel accepted and no peer pressure for me. They only want to connect through social media.

Getting together with people takes effort. And being a real friend requires a certain amount of vulnerability as well. Facebook makes it too easy to be "friends" with other people by doing away with that awkwardness and effort. I think in reality, social media trivializes true relationships.

i was addicted to facebook for close to 8 years. i would deactivate then activate. it started becoming like a hamster wheel. till you finally say to yourself. why do i have to express my life or show off my life to other people. strangers even just for attention. social media brings out the inner childhood of grown ppl who never got attention when they were children. so now you seek it as adults. mind you in the most precarious of ways! happy to say i’ve been off of it now for almost 2 years and have no earthly intentions of returning.

After I deleted facebook I felt a day of separation anxiety and then I didn't miss it at all, I went outside and got busy doing other things, going to museums, joining meet up groups, hanging out at the dog park, I actually realized the entire time I was offline I was thinking about being online.. right there is a sign theres a problem. Get outside and look at nature, get back to basics. It will change your life.

Deleted Snapchat and Instagram 3 days ago and I’m honestly upset it took me until now to do so. Thinking about all of those moments I stared at my screen instead of where I was. Thinking about taking pictures of my perfectly assembled meal, OOTD, and “having fun” when I truly wasn’t. Social media is a controlling monster that has a way of controlling us mentally, behaviorally, and physically yet we don’t realize this until helpful videos like this or an epiphany hits us.

That's so true! But ironically for me, the lockdown has shown me more on how toxic being online a lot of the time can be. And how I could use my time in a more valuable way instead of social media. For me the fact that basically all social interaction has been forced to online has made me feel overwhelmed and miss the feeling of interacting in person. And I'm hoping more people feel the same after Covid ends because it's insane how many people I see who are glued to their phones anytime I go outside. It's really taken over our lives.

I've never had issues with it at all, I loved insta because I'm a photographer and I uploaded my work and could see others but in may I had a relapse on depression and social media did made it worse, I started having really bad anxiety because I'd compare my low with people's edited lives. I deleted it and now I have recovered, I don't even miss it, I feel so at peace and can focus better on my tasks, started studying anatomy, doing curses, working better and starting new projects🖤🥰

I employee 20 employees mostly millennials and Generation Y. 40 years in business and I cannot believe how I cannot train anyone to do the job anymore as a WAIT STAFF. They cannot focus on guests needs. They look lost and have Big issues if someone has any issues with anything. They hate going back to a table to offer desserts, soups, specials, they don’t want to talk more then they have to. I am trying to learn more and more about what the issues are by researching and finding out this is Everywhere not just in my diner. I try and teach them how wonderful the experience to have “REAL PEOPLE” give you HIGH PRAISE. That Good Feeling inside. It’s Real not fake. I can’t get through. I am lucky in the fact each employee has lasted a long time and the ones applying can’t hold work more than 3 months. If they worked 10 places in 1 year they think they are Very Experienced. I also know they are taught Don’t do something where you don’t make a difference and not contribute. So I word my Help wanted ads how they contribute to the public’s daily life and have a chance to make it a much better day. They like that and jump on my ads. But no Experience. I could train someone in 2010 and earlier the job in 2 days. You learn by paying attention. Now every little thing with a CHECK OFF list and still can;t turn off lights lock doors, shut off appliances, etc. sad. I am seriously thinking of closing because it’s not fun anymore and losing my passion due to constant baby sitting.

Today marks the beginning of my journey to free myself from constant comparison and lack of self awareness, a numbness, a box that has taken over every aspect of my life, has stopped and prolonged me from reaching my goals, has made me sad, anxious, mad at myself. I no longer want to rely on social media to “give me something to do” when I have “nothing to do” because I do have things to do, I need to live my life. Maybe one day I’ll be able to manage both but for now I’m ready for a total reset. Good luck to all you can do this!

I know for many it feels tough to do the final step. I did it once and came back after some time which was a big mistake. I wanna focus on my life and especially on my family. Life is beautiful and even if it will be hard sometimes, then we should lift our heads and do something about it instead of lowering our heads to look at a screen which doesn't makes us feel better. We live only once and we live now. Be strong, folks.

I quit FB and SM except for my website which is my business. Life did not cease to exist though some people were not happy with my decision. I am a avid reader, took up cross country running, and decided to go back to college at the age of 48 and get a second degree in History.
Why does an individual feel they need to post every aspect of their life for all to see???!!
I have more time for church, mission and humanitarian work, and volunteering more hours a month in our community soup kitchen.
We only have one life....make it count!
