I’m so glad you said ignorance is bliss. I don’t watch the news. It’s pointless! There’s nothing that I can do with most of the stuff, yet people always tell me that I need to be informed. Informed of what?! All the negative stuff that I can’t control.

I quit social media 4 years ago due to information overload. I feel less stressed, more happy , less anxious, and more at peace with my mindfulness practice. people post about everything under the sun. best life choice ever!

It’s been 22 months since I left social media. I have no regrets at all.
I got sick of people gossiping, drama, negativity & people faking their lives & friendships and sharing everything that should be private or craving attention with provocative pictures & selfies.
A number of things I realised:
    1. People who added me as “Friends” didn’t really care about me. They were “So called Friends”
    2. When I was going through my hardest times, including anxiety, upset, trauma and stress, Nobody was REALLY there for me or reached out to me.
    3. Certain posts or videos get blown out of proportion or completely taken out of context even if it’s nothing negative.
    4. People lie about the amount of friends they REALLY have. Who in the REAL world has 100s or 1000s of friends WHO??
    5. Communication is very one sided. The same person had to make the first move to start a conversation as the other person doesn’t make an effort themselves or just can’t be bothered.
    6. People lie about their lives, they only show the positive side of theirs lives which doesn’t show the real truth about the person. You can’t tell and don’t see if someone is REALLY depressed, upset, isolated, lonely, feeling suicidal or what’s actually going on in their actual lives. Even if people post how they really feel, people don’t always care.
    7. It makes people fake and insecure. It’s not just school kids or teenagers in college or university, but adults as well are being fake & insecure.
    8. People compare themselves to others just to get more “likes” & comments.
    9. Social media has increased loneliness, isolation. Anxiety and depression which can be severe.
    10. Due to social media and the increase in technology, it’s causing destruction & destroying peoples lives in the sense of their is no sense of unity, community, love and nobody wants to help each other. If they see someone doing something constructive and productive and they’re doing well, people will laugh at them in an act of ignorance, and cannot wait for them to fall down.
    11. Having a proper conversation or being real is considered not normal and people think it’s creepy. People don’t like having real conversations
    12. It’s made people to be narcissists, self entitlement, ignorant, prejudice and bullies.
    13. People can say things or make comments that are abusive, racist, sexist, ignorant, prejudice, misogynist, homophobia, xenophobia, discrimination openly online, rather than to your face.
    14. I have seen Boys & Girls take provocative, selfies / pictures to get attention from so called friends / strangers, sometimes in a negative way, for example, woman having their chests hanging out, body image, men & women showing off muscles, six pack & more.
    15. With social media & the young generation with regards to friendships, people feel that if they add someone as friend request and they accept it, they automatically think that’s “friends for life” people need to realise that’s not how friendship really works.
    16. People will not hang around with other people WHO DON’T have social media. They look at those people as boring, lame and not cool.
I never had TikTok, Twitter or Instagram. Glad I didn’t sign up to any of them. Facebook was the only social media platform I had and it was recommended to me back when I was in my 20s.
I only use TH-cam as I can look at interesting things like cooking recipes and motivation videos and music videos of festivals & concerts and more fun stuff.
I enjoy going out in nature, going for walks, bowling listening to music and learning new hobbies and watching movies.
Since leaving it’s been the best decision of my life. I enjoy life more, I can now enjoy doing the things I do or want to try without being judged or told what to do without being made to feel guilty.
I feel more happier and a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
I think if social media disappeared forever, I can guarantee people will spend REAL quality time with friends and family. People will know who their REAL friends are and that they will do things together and have a good time doing it. I also feel that people will have proper conversations and listen and engage.

I miss the time we had before big social media play forms I miss when MySpace and Facebook were one of the biggest places to engage to be honest. Cus I barely used those even when they were big!! It was a way to connect with people not “connect” with people. It’s all for show now.

That’s so hard Whitney, I know how that feels… someone told me once to try and treat those addicted to social media like you would treat any other addict… they don’t realize they are trapped and can’t see that life is better without it… it’s made me a lot more sympathetic toward those who are addicted, and realizing that I’m free while they are still trapped in their addiction, and trying to give them grace and encourage them in small ways to get free from it themselves🙏🏻

today is my first day off social media, I’ve had instagram and tiktok deleted for a while but now I am off snapchat (the biggest killer for me) and facebook. I am really excited to see how much more time I am going to have and how my comparison issues will fade. Deleting snapchat was a hard move to make and it took me months to find the courage, but I say enough is enough. Especially after doing the math and my average screentime is 3.5 hours a day which adds up to 53 days a year!! thats still 2 months! really sad!!! wish me luck guys

That makes me so happy!! I think if more people would dare to break the mold, we would realize these things aren’t bringing us true happiness, but it definitely is “easier” to just go along with what everyone else is doing… but the benefits of breaking away from that have been tremendous! I’m so happy you took that step for yourself!

TH-cam isn't actually a "social media" platform. It's a video search engine. This is why people keep making a distinction when making these types of videos. People know deep down inside TH-cam, Pinterest and Reddit are somehow different (because they are.)
    God bless you. 🙏

Hey Kendra! I watched your video on “was quitting social media actually worth it?” This video hit me to the core because I realIzed all of those ppl that talk to you on social media aren’t actually a friend if you aren’t easily accessible. I would actually love to do a prayer with you that we both make friendships and maintain those without the push or need to only connect via social media! Lmk!

i also don't consider youtube social media. I went off IG for a while and it was great. Then, I started to feel a bit lonely and disconnected. I recently went back on and not one person on there had messaged me to see where i was or how i was. that was eye-opening! Also, when i went back on , I didn't feel like i liked it as much as i used to. I'm off it again. Not sure if it will be permanent , but I know it will be a while!

OMG, I love how you portray all of this! Really well thought out video! The whole reason why I decided to leave social media in one day was all the negative comments I would get when giving an opinion that was not the "status quo" and the amount of anxiety that came with this. You are right, social media (IG, Facebook) discourages us from posting things that are not what "other people might like" and it shouldn't be. As a platform that is for content creation for the most part, you shouldn't be feeling bad because you expressed your thoughts or posted something that is not as "aesthetically pleasing enough" and therefore you will feel bad because no one liked it and it will only encourage you to post what other people are liking, that's just brainwashing you into thinking like everyone else.

It’s so good that you feel free from being addicted!! I myself feel addicted, not to Instagram or Snapchat, but to TH-cam itself because my finger immediately touches TH-cam 😂 I always come onto your channel to check if you have posted, and even other people 🤩 But that definitely consumes my time and makes me feel so guilty! I wish I could read more, pray more, etc. right now I’m also averaging 4-8 hours per day! 😬😬 I wish I could also be more joyful haha, because the guilt and time spent just scrolling and watching random TH-cam shorts hurts big time. 🥺
However, I Don’t know how to change this, because there’s so much valuable information on TH-cam, and want to create my own videos myself one day. I’m just so afraid of what it would be like apart from TH-cam 😭 The videos I watch comprise of evangelism, books videos, bible readings, pomodoro technique, workouts, singing, etc. it also causes jelousy at times. The struggle is *REAL!*
On a side note, I would LOVE for you to make a video on how you learnt to practice playing the guitar yourself😊 I want to pick it up, but am not sure yet.

    • @_KendraChristine
      @_KendraChristine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I completely relate, it helps me to fill my time with hobbies, and then I literally don’t have enough time to spend watching hours of TH-cam! On days when I don’t have much going on, then I can spend a lot more time just watching random videos, so i usually try to fill my time with hobbies (guitar being one!!)😊

I quit social media around a year ago as well and it was amazing for a while but now I’m slowly feeling like I’m missing out😫 when I tried to reinstall my Instagram app, after scrolling for a few minutes, I remembered why I stopped using it. I felt my brain slowly dying LOL but idk how to cope with this feeling of isolation. I graduated early and came back home so I’m super lonely since all of my friends are out of town for school still. I want real in-person interactions with people but idk how to find community offline😞

    • @_KendraChristine
      @_KendraChristine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I know EXACTLY how you feel! I’ve for sure had times where I miss the feeling of community that social media gave me… but when I made this video I was quickly reminded that it never filled the void, but only gave the illusion of community… it took a while for me to find friends outside of SM, but they do exist! And if you continue to pray and ask God to truly fill that void in your life, I promise you He will 💛🙏🏻

I was trying so hard posting a status or a rant that was so intellectual and compelling, but sadly nobody cares. I also believe that social media can contribute to consumerism. I see people on there purchasing $1000 worth of merch on Amazon just to show it off on a fandom group to get likes from strangers. Its sad really. Since deleting it, I no longer have to worry and am content with the only things I need. It was a struggle deleting my Facebook, but I finally did it. Its the FOMO I had and seeing all my peers of their highlight reel posting their marriage engagement 💍 and new born child. I myself wanted to have my moment of Glory but then realized all the CONGRATULATIONS 🎊 does it really matter? True confidence stems from within. People who uses it are truly the ones who are insecure.

Now that election is near, people are becoming toxic toward other people's political view, reminded me why I'm apolitical. People are cancelling people here and there. But generally, it's just really toxic.

im on the detox journey and ive already deleted snapchat and twitter (the accounts too)! ive been researching how bad social media is for about two months now and the only two apps i have left now are tiktok and instagram. instagram i won’t be able to completely delete because i have an account that i do business on, but im working on being able to deactivate my main account and maybe even delete it. tiktok im also hoping to delete at some point, but i need to take it slowly (that’s just how i am). but ever since ive deleted snapchat and twitter and limited my use on tiktok and instagram i have felt SO much better and actually discovered that i might only have become an introvert BECAUSE of social media, i already have made so many new friends and talk to way more people so im already making progress! to anyone reading this, TAKE THIS AS A SIGN TO START YOUR JOURNEY!! it wont be easy but it’s worth it in the end :)

But, it was also depressing because I'm a vegan animal lover and tons of animals suffering ads were so upsetting. I know animals are abused and suffering, and it breaks my heart, but I don't want to see it nonstop in my feed. :-( Like you, I did keep TH-cam as I use it to host videos for my blog...and my blog is my REAL work. And, yep, if people have to actually make an effort to contact you via calling, texting, or email...95% won't. I'm done with fake connections.

What is the best option? Deactivate? Or just remove the app from the phone? Or both😂

And if anyone thinks this is going to happen. Think again. I been online for 21 years. And I'm not going anywhere. Not letting anyone do that to me. I'm my own person. I do as I wish. Not letting anyone tell me any differently. My stuff. My choices.

The biggest thing that helps me is to find different hobbies instead! Like I love reading, and drawing, or going for a run or a bike ride… filling your time and your days with activities so you don’t have as many opportunities to think about your phone and social media!

Is TH-cam considered a social media?

    • @_KendraChristine

Some people consider it social media, but it’s defined as an entertainment app

lemme guess, more productive, you stopped comparing yourself to other people, you began to read more, you felt more genuine connections. alright now time to watch the video....

Not being on social media doesnt mean you should be ignorant. reading a newspaper or listening to podcast/ news should resolve that ;)

Isn't TH-cam social media??? Community tab and comments aren't social interactions?

I addressed this, but as a content creator it is very different from other social media apps. I personally think it is very different

Thank u for posting this. I been feeling really pathetic lately going into social media. Seeing the same people on loop is just sad. I use it to post my yoga classes, but even yoga gets watered down on insta. I’m glad hearing this. Thank you!
