One thing to note, Maki specifically criticizes Kaede for saying optimistic things but taking no action during the time limit. She comes for her hard, and rewatching, I really think that’s when Kaede started her plan. She felt she wasn’t backing up what she was saying, and she didn’t want everyone to die. She trusted Shuichi’s deduction but didn’t trust his plan because she thought it didn’t take enough action, a belief spurred on by Maki’s words. Maki is really antagonistic to Kaede, which is really interesting considering her later role. It really seems like they were setting her up as a fake out antagonist/antagonist for Kaede, which is fascinating. Maki saw Kaede as foolish and naive, and she was not afraid to say it. And Kaede took those criticism to heart-that’s another thing I find fascinating, Kaede is really headstrong in some ways, but the moment she feels she did the wrong thing (like how she was criticized for the road of despair, or the murder of rantaro) she blames herself hard. She’s stubborn and optimistic until the moment she thinks she messes up, which I think is often overlooked. Unlike Kaito who stayed steadfast in his conviction that Kaede was right to push them during the Despair Road, Kaede feels really bad about it and apologizes. You have a whole Argue Argument with her about her being a bad person for what happened with Rantaro, because that’s how hard she takes stuff. She gets really focused on a goal (she has said she’s forgotten to eat or sleep while playing the piano, and said after the Despair Road that her attempt there was the method she used for learning piano-doing it over and over without any breaks before she gets it right) and wants to succeed on it, that she loses sight of the bigger picture. Her murder attempt was her responding and developing as a person in response to the criticism she got-she didn’t drag in anyone into it because she didn’t want to strong arm anyone like she did during the Despair Road, and she’s taking aggressive action because she was criticized for being all talk. She takes criticism really hard, and internalizes it, even the harsher parts. Which I think a lot of people ignore about her, because they see her as initially stubborn and mistake her for Kaito-Kaede does not stick to something after criticism, does not have complete faith in her beliefs, she takes the criticism and alters her behavior accordingly. She doesn’t get mad at the person criticizing her, either-she always, always, is shown to blame herself. Again, Kaito and Tenko has to defend Kaede during the despair road. She didn’t defend herself, she was just shocked that it was happening and hurt that everyone felt that way-that she might have hurt them when she was trying to help. You see the same thing happen before her execution-she doesn’t fight it, but accepts it as the consequence of her actions. Everyone else fights it, as you said. Kaede is hyper-responsible. That’s another one of her strengths and flaws that people overlook. She takes responsibility for herself, for her actions. She takes so much responsibility she doesn’t even fight against her execution. She actively gets everyone else to *stop* fighting it. It’s very admirable that she tries so hard to learn from her mistakes, and take responsibility for them, but that’s the thing: she takes too much responsibility, for things that aren’t even completely her fault. She doesn’t know this, but she wasn’t even the one who killed Rantaro, and yet she died for it, because she thought she did and therefore felt she *had* to. No one would call what happened to her just, even if she *did* kill Rantaro, but she stood there and argued that she *deserved* such a cruel fate during her Argue Argument. That’s what makes that trial so tragic. I also really like the array of emotions they let Kaede have. She’s optimistic, yet after the breakfast the morning after the Despair Road, she just goes to her room and cries. She’s tries so hard to stay positive, but we still sees her negative emotions. I actually like that she’s a liar and mistrustful in ways, as it adds a lot of depth to her. She’s not invulnerable, she’s human. I also find amusement in the moments she reminds me of Kokichi (pressing buttons on Kiibo, calling him a roomba, saying “....Just kidding!” And laughing during the trial after Shuichi accuses her, etc etc.) I think Kaede and him had the potential to understand each other to a degree, despite their outward opposing views (trust/mistrust) and how Kaede was annoyed with him. I’d be very interested in their dynamic if she lived, and I’m sad we’ll never see it develop. I also adore how she flirts with all the girls, to the point Himiko straight up asks if she’s playing for the other team (lol). We love an icon. Kaede is one of my favorite characters. I think she always will be. She would have been an amazing protagonist, too, and I stick by that. I love Shuichi, but I’d trade him for Kaede in a heartbeat. ....Ah! I got a heart right as I was editing more stuff in, I wouldn’t have edited if I knew, because that gets rid of the heart... whoops. Edit: Thank you for the re-heart! this was an AMAZING analysis! i wanted to mention this in the vid, but was scared to get *too* in depth and stray off topic, but the maki-kaede dynamic is really interesting because it can be argued maki was the entire reason kaede formed her plan in the first place. iirc, kaede decided to go forth with her plan after maki said something along the lines of “your speeches won’t work anymore, so do something about this yourself” this ofc relates back to kaede’s sense of responsibility over the group, as I’m sure hearing Maki say this only DOUBLED the amount of pressure she was feeling at that time, especially when she was already highly stressed out about the time limit AND the fact that one of them was potentially a traitor. this is why I love V3 - you can spend so much time discussing the little ins and outs of each character no matter how long they lasted because each of them contribute to the overall story of V3 in unique and important ways, and even seemingly small interactions between these characters end up mattering in the grand scheme of things. ty so much for watching and leaving this comment! i loved reading it and you opened up my mind to even MORE things about kaede’s character I didn’t even notice myself! :) ❤️

I’m glad people love her as much as I do. I’ve watched people the game at least 5-7 times I believe, so I’ve... had time to reanalyze stuff a lot. If you can’t tell, V3 is my favorite game-not just in danganronpa, but ever, and a big part of that is Kaede! I really wish people would explore her more like this, because I think there’s a lot to talk about, even if we only get a little bit with her as our protagonist sadly.

As an Oumaede shipper (Kokichi x Kaede), I would have LOVED to see their dynamic more if she survived at least a little bit longer. I think they would have had a sort of rivalry, but also get along a little bit at some points.
I absolutely agree. The first two pro tags were endearing, but as a girl who is also head strong, hides her emotions, and just tries to keep the group together, she was the breath of fresh air I needed. I could never relate to all the others except for her, and her willingness to not give up really stuck to me. I was torn when she died. Rip queen you are more missed then you will ever know. It also gave more rep to the girls for a change, like komaru was nice but, Kaede was an amazingly written character who was down to earth. Thanks for reading this lol

It’s sad she died to push the male protagonist not be a wimp, he mentions her all the time despite them spending barely any time together for the angst. It would have been so much more interesting to have her as the protagonist than the boring shy male protagonist we see a lot in Danganronpa games. She would’ve been so refreshing to have, the only good female protagonist in the games. I liked Despair Girls but Makoto’s sister was so annoying, I liked everyone but her. Even then she’s STILL!!!! a boring protagonist just like her brother. I did like V2 protagonist and I loved the ending, but he was still the wimp until later on.
Kaede is one of my favourite fictional characters of all time. I hope the fact she isn't given much backstory in the main game means it is a mystery and can be filled out by a future title. I would love if Kaede got some type of Alternative Universe game.,sorta like Steins;Gate 0 or was the protagonist of Ultra Despair Girls 2.

I doubt you’ll see this but I’m gonna share my piece. While the twist in concept was a neat idea...they picked the exact wrong place to employ it in every way. They picked the protagonist who was female, the most unique, and they employed the tired trope of using a female characters death to prop up a male characters arc. Also, Shuichi, though interesting, is yet another milquetoast softie, something we had for three games now. Also people always try to use Makotos sister as an excuse, but they know full well we wanted one in a normal mystery game, so the argument is broken.
i definitely agree with you in some areas! while i personally do think the twist was a brilliant idea and it defines a lot of Kaede’s character for me, i still can’t help but wish they had chose to do it at a different time or with a different game.. i disagree with shuichi being a softie, though. he was a BIG step up from makoto and hajime and i believe out of the three his character arc is the most well-written and interesting! i do agree, though, that the setup for his character development was repetitive by this point. we already had two games of seeing the passive *male* main characters gain confidence and self-esteem throughout the story, and then the one time they switch it up with a fresh new female protagonist, they kill her. that stung a LOT when I first played V3 😫 and ikr! i love komaru, but when we said we wanted a female protagonist, we obviously meant in a *MAIN* series game. she’s still awesome tho haha

By all means her death does define the beauty of her character, and I personally relate to Kaede on many levels in terms of our personalities and beliefs, though I sadly do not play piano lol. Yeah, you’d be surprised how many people seem to miss the memo when we say “but we wanted a female protagonist!” Nobody is crapping in Komaru, but she’s not in the main mystery games. I would've loved to see both Kaede and Shuichi live through the whole or most of the game, actually. I loved their teamwork in the first chapter and seeing them work together from the get-go and having them be crime-solving partners throughout the story would've been amazing! I'd trade the "shocking chapter 1 twist" for a story with a strong buddy dynamic in a heartbeat. Also, I'm not sure if this is controvertial or not, but I think Shuichi works much better as a secondary/supporting character to Kaede rather than being the protagonist. He's allowed to be a lot more proactive and intelligent in the first chapter due to not being forced into the "passive view point" role and him and Kaede's contrasting personalities work so well together. Too good to be true, I guess.
same! i love them both, but they were truly better together! would have been my dream if we got to play as kaede for daily life and then as shuichi for the investigations and trial. would have been a cool way to utilize two awesome protags :)
@@SensitiveDeku Perhaps it could be like in D2 where you get to control Nagito for a while. Two characters working together and discovering different clues that come together in the trials. That seems interesting! You could also perhaps take this idea further and have both characters be controllable during freetime, so you can choose not only who you can interact with, but also the protagonist interacting with them (that would mean twice the amount of dialog for every character though... Maybe that's asking too much).
1:16 Kaede is also my favourite character since my sister plays the piano and I really enjoyed when my sister played the piano but when I got into V3 I was lets say the happiest person in the world-
I think Kaede is an outstanding protagonist because of her leadership skills. She really proved herself as a leader, whereas Shuichi wasn't as confident. When Shuichi was the protag, Kaito showed more leadership skills. Kaede I know for a fact would've led everyone to victory. She was confident and inspired everyone not to give up. I find that a key skill for a protag.
Honestly because Kaede was more defined as a character paradoxically she was MORE relatable. The more details you include of a character, the more you can relate because even if they’re not a perfect match to you, you can relate to their struggles and being passionate about things. ‘I’m hopelessly average, even my hobbies are normal.’ It’s so bland it’s hard to relate. There’s nothing here. If it’d been ‘my grades are mainly Bs (except English which … let’s not go there) and I like cycling and having the boys over for games on the weekend.) He’d be more relatable because average people still have their own hobbies and interests. As it stood there, they made him so uninteresting that it felt like he only became protag because he’s The Everyman and it’s just ordained. Kaede (and to a degree Shuichi), had a real personality and drive. Honestly I felt like Kaedes perving on the girls and not saying anything about the boys looks felt very r/men writing women and pulled me out, but her love of Piano (especially since it was a love that existed for its own sake, not to further the plot), her bluntness and her strong willed attitude made her more relatable. When she took the reigns it felt like it was because she was good in a crisis, not because it was God Ordained
I will say though, Shuichi is a lot more complex than a lot of people give him credit for (not saying this to you specifically of course just mentioning it because I’m of the opinion he’s FULL of personality, and unlike the previous two male protagonists he begins his development almost immediately)! his arc is honestly really relatable especially to people who suffer from anxiety like I believe he does. tldr; kaede and shuichi are just perfect 🥺

Kaede was the sunshine in the group, she was a symbol of hope from the very start while Makoto and Hajime were normal guys till the story progressed. She also had a more vibrant personality and I'm happy that the players get to play a girl who actually had an ultimate talent and a vibrant personality with quirks of her own, instead of the 'ugh, I'm so painfully average, I'm so boring compared to them' like damn shut up! I love Makoto, Hajime's alright, but come on! Have some confidence! You're so self conscious you're making me feel self conscious!

I wish there was a gameplay where you can choose who gets executed: Shuichi or Kaede. By that after learning Kaede “killed” Rantaro as Shuichi you can pick to tell the truth or to lie. If you pick Kaede well plot resumes as normal but if you pick Shuichi then it goes down the “I’d trade my life for yours” fic
What if V3 was a game with TWO protagonists which in this case are Shuichi and Kaede. In some parts you play as Shuichi then vice versa to Kaede. Would have been so much more unique. Even though I never really liked Kaede, it would be a fun experience and it would give her some development to make me like her.

I kinda hated Maki for a bit for being pessimistic about Kaede after that secret escape route part where Kaito was comforting Kaede saying it wasn't her fault, but then Maki said 'it is her fault' Like girl, why you gotta do her like that!?
I just had an idea (Also in all of these there is the protag switch thing) What if after the first trial and her being responsible for shuichi's death (who could have been a useful asset to end the killing game being the ulimate detective) only a few people of the cast talk to her (gonta, renko and kaito since they tried to defend her and believe in her) while everyone else ignores her, making her feel extremely guilty for letting shuichi take her place. Throughout the game, she has to overcome her guilty, get everyone to trust her again, that being hard since everyone is dying. Kaede would need to look at everything shes done and correct it. Another that could happen is that she actually kills shuichi and everyone who was defending her gets executed. This way people would have reason to be scared of her, being responsible for 4 murders. Again, she would have to learn to overcome her guilt and make friends in people (I think maki, tsumugi, kirumi and miu would be mostly shown throughout gameplay). Then when tsumugi is revealed as the mastermind, kaede would again feel awful and it would be even more upsetting, knowing that a friend had blamed her for the murder and let the people defending her die. With this, she would regret hope and despair. (That was a lot of writing)
I also hate when people say she couldn't delveopment throughout the game if she survived and that people say when she is a mary sue when she has flaws as well lot of potiental
gotta be honest here, it pisses me off how a character as interesting as rantaro and a charecter as likeable as Kaede both had to die in chapter 1 yet the unfunny, bland, and sometimes annoying Tsumugi got to live until the very end (yes i know the reason why and it still pisses me off)

Sensitivedeku You make very good points 😃 it would have so much more interesting if she did survive rather than shuichi. it also would have been interesting to see her go from what she was like at the start to being broken down & then putting herself back together. she also would have been open to constrictive criticism and changed in that way as well as learning to ask for advice and becoming more smarter/wiser and cunning as a result as for how she acted and behaved around everyone I don't see her changing radicaly. Also did you know it was possible for her to get past the first trial if she was being more level headed and used shuichis detective skills. as for how 1. the killing wound was on the back rantao's head as oppose to directly on his head 2. if I remember correctly in the last photo he seemed to be leaning forward while approaching the camera if her plan did work then he should have been lying face down on his stomach rather than the position he was in if I'm not mistaken that would be a position is the result of someone being attacked from behind given death was instant according to shuichi. with that being said she just would have needed to confess it during the class trial along with said proof as well as being willing test her trap for everyone as proof the next day. or request it as proof from monokuma that and remembering where the camera was placed with this being said as long as she gave the same reasoning as she did in-game she most likely would have been forgiven but she would have been given a stern talking to by everyone afterwards 😃

@@SensitiveDeku well they most likely would have took her side once she points everything all out after all the wound was on the back of rantao's head and not directly on his head🤕. once everyone realises that all blame would end up back on shuichi also Kaedae wouldn't be able to save him because she'd end up proving about a 90% chance that she's innocent shuichi would lose by a landslide against her 🤣. one thing I never understood is why they believe shuichi's theory about Kaedae being the murder in main game but gives no solid proof that she did kill rantaro like testing her trap. I mean anybody could have called him out on that and demanded he gives real actual proof before making final decisions 😃 which would have still ended in her favor given that her ball misses altogether I mean at worse monokuma could deny said request to test her trap and it would be 50/50 chance for the both of them to be guilty but one is certain they would have checked her trap next day that's a certainty.🙂
Kaede Akamatsu was already one of my favorite characters, but this video really made me understand her character and personality a WHOLE lot better and now I love her even more! Great vid!

At one point I thought about Kaito bc they're both similar and he did defend her in moments, but it never fully sailed bc Maki and Kaito were too cute together. Also a 'controversial' pick would Kokichi. Not the biggest fan of Kokichi myself, but you gotta admit in V3 you were quick to judge the 'main' guys which would be Kokichi, Rantaro, Shuichi, and Kaede. You know the protagonist's friends/love triangle/harem. And so I was going off of the Komahina and Naegami, the 'antagonist' and 'protagonist' working together to a common goal, but they're not gonna end up together trope. And three out of four died. Where the hell did my harem go!? What was I suppose do now!? And after that I couldn't really find any ship that I loved as much as Kaede's lost harem. Maki x Kaito was cute, but Kaito died so that was also lost.

Well people say that some people were upset that we had another girl protagonist since we had to play as not one but two in ultra despair girls: another episode. Now in my little world I find that I bit irritating, since it was their choice to play the game or not and they played it but instead of not playing v3 them people left hate comments about Kaede. That’s just how I think Kaede didn’t stay as the protagonist or the developers thought it would be a good idea.
That reminds of hetalia, where a bunch of fan girls were hating on all of the female characters just bc they thought they were stopping gay ships from happening or they were mary sues.

Some people don’t even consider her to be one ): and I agree, I would love to see Kaede get either a short novel or have her story get explored more in a future title whether it be mainline or a spin off. ❤️
She wasn't the only one person who wanted to stop the killing game. Rantaro also wanted, that's why he took matters into his own hands. Shuichi and Kaito wanted to stop it as well as Kaede and Rantaro. All of the ultimates wanted to stop the killing game (more or less), but not everyone could do it. And i'm sorry, but i'm gonna say it - Kokichi mostly wanted to stop the killing game. He took the role of the "villain" to make it real. Afterwards he sacrifed himself for his smart plan. Yeah I know, he was a liar. I know he messed up with everyone. I know he did a lot of bad things. But we can't disagree with the fact that he acted like the true leader. Why am I saying that? Because he cared about everyone more than himself. You can see it in chapter 1 when they were trying to escape (this moment with a despair road or something like that). He stoped Kaede from trying and trying not because he was exhausted, but because the others couldn't stand on their legs anymore. There is also many situations were it's clear that Kokichi cared about his classmates, but it will take me more to write about it... so if someone is curious - just ask, I will try my best to specify those points. Returning to the main topic - Kokichi is just a childish prankster who also was scared of this killing game and really, really distrustful about the others (during the game he trusted only Gonta and Shuichi) and... I think he also wanted at least one friend in this terrible situation (cause like who doesn't?). He lied to himself to bear everyday life in this hell (mostly to just feel better). That's why he acted so carelessly early in the game (for example saying that it's not boring if killing game is happening). And that's why most of the classmates didn't approve it. They saw him bad so then he acted badly to achieve his goal which he probably started working at after chapter 1. And omg most importantly! Kokichi at the start of the game is genuine and truthfully with his emotions which I pretty fast forgot (idk why) when I was playing V3 for the first time (my first playthrough was like... 1-2 months ago? i think...). I'm writing it because in chapter 1 there is a lot of Kokichi's sincere sprites. Seriously, I am little bit surprised at how bad my memory is... Anyway Kokichi said (also in chapter 1) that "half his lies are actually told with good intentions" which is true, but his classmates didn't seem to remember it after all or maybe they thought it was also a lie - who knows? :v Oh, and yeah... I have also this quote: "N-No way... Are we really gonna die? I don't wanna die yet... I'm gonna survive! I'm gonna make it no matter what!" Kokichi said these words with his upset sprite which had genuine tears in his eyes (this sprite is also when Kokichi gets angry on Gonta in 4th class trial). So yeah... after seeing this and remembering what happend in chapter 5 I was like.... yeah.... really sad..... more like heartbroken. Anyway he did... some messed up stuff, but he really tried to do something in this situation. After every death of his classmates he was really pissed of, but he showed it the most after Kaede's and Gonta's execution. He considered all of them as friends (even though he wasn't a big fan of Maki because of her ultimate talent, even though most of them didn't like him. I'm writing most of them, because Gonta is a pure gentleman who likes everyone. And there is also Shuichi who was really trying to understand Kokichi). Kokichi did a lot of inappropriate actions to stop the killing game, but all of his efforts had a good intentions. Just like Kaede who wanted take down a mastermind (in my opinion Shuichi made a good point - they should first capture mastermind not kill him immediately). That's why Kokichi is an anti-hero. You love or hate him - that's how this character works. It's a main reason why he is so interesting. Because of the central motive of the game (truth and lies), because of his lies, because of his well-built personality, because you need analize his words to truly understand meaning behind his actions, because he makes the game interesting. There is many reasons why Kokichi is overrated and it's understandable. He is really a well written character, just like Nagito. In my opinion Kokichi and Kaede mostly wanted to end the killing game. But I think I should include also Rantaro to "people who the most wanted to end the killing game". Cause you know... he had a plan as well as Kokichi and Kaede. He tried to do something just like both of them. So yeah... this comment is huge. I've never wrote such a huge comment before xD But I just love Kokichi and his whole personality and talking about this character is my favorite thing xD By the way... I'm not a big fan of Kaede, but in my opinion she wasn't bad^^ Maybe because I don't like extravagant optimists and well... how to put it... I'm more of a realist type (sometimes with a pessimistic tendency). ;v And I'm also a distrustful person so I didn't quite understand why Kaede was so trustful with others and why she treated everyone as a friends in a literally few days... ;v I prefer more Shuichi as a protagonist and I really liked a plot twist in chapter 1 (don't hate me for this)^^ But I was sooooo sad during class trial and I was sobbing so hard xD Shuichi is my favorite protagonist by far. He is such a cinnamon roll. And I really, really love his character development. Regardless of my opinion of being trustfully in a such situation like killing game - I'm really glad that Kaede and Shuichi were friends (even though I think their relationship was a bit too rushed;/ and this is the main reason I don't ship them at all, but after all they are still cute tho^^). Uh... and... well... I really love saiouma dynamic and I think they are really adorable

I would like to metion something that, apparently not many people observe. I don't think Shuichi would get the development he got, if it wans't for Kaede. Her sacrifice made a big impact on him. I hate that people overall hate's her but ADORES Shuichi. I know people can have their opinions, but sometimes, just say kaede was annyoying, is not an argument. I do think Shuichi would get development even if Kaede lived, but i don't think it would be THAT great. Overall, i love her and i wish she stayed for the whole game. It's so sad to think she was killed for nothing, and in the end, Tsumugui dind't even explained much about this part.

I'm going to have to disagree with you mainly just because Shuichi is my favorite protagonist/one of my favorite characters and I love his story. But honestly, Team Danganronpa really could of just made a crappy protagonist for the 1st 2 chapters since Kaede wasn't going to stay around. But they instead decided to hit it out of the park with her. Honestly, if V3 didn't play out like it did. I wouldn't of minded Kaede staying as the protag since she is still one of my favorite characters in Danganronpa. But I don't think I'd be willing to trade in sad boy Shuichi. 😅😉 Great Video.

Kaede being the protag would’ve been a nice change of pace from the insecure protagonist trope. I understand that it was supposed to sell the twist, but I still feel heartbroken over it.
I definitely view it as a double edged sword! it still sucks we didn’t get Kaede for the full game, but Shuichi did an amazing job in her place.. so in the best case scenario I would choose them both 😭😩
I liked Hajime a bit more, but I did like her... then I spent the rent of my first playthrough hating her since she was acting crazy in the trial. I like her again now, since Rantaro's real murderer was found in ch6. I've never hated my boy Hajime, though

I think she’s about on par as like Sayaka Maizono with character. But sayaka only wanted to save herself and her dance mates, kaede wanted to save everybody.
I feel so bad for kaede needing to be hung, especially the fact she didn’t deserve it and had to set up all the steps for everyone but no one knew. (I’m guessing?)

Kaede is a villain and a murderer but she is also optimistic and is doing the right thing... fitting the description of a protagonist, the main character but not nessecerally a good character, she is the hero who died believing she was the villain DR has some amazing flawed characters!
Not gonna lie though, the difference between her and Chiaki is that Chiaki's not interesting or I cared about her actions despite actually had a lot of effects about it, when her character flaws and how it actually annoy someone are lacking. The only flaw she did is that she failed to protect everyone, and even I'm actually peeved about her both the game and the anime, though even she has a lot of screentime, she lacked or is limited in terms of flaws that's why I disliked Chiaki, because she's perfect, I wished there's more exploration within her character Ai Chiaki's character should explore more about her bluntness and "Not feely" attitude that does come across as "someone who doesn't concern" people and how people would get affected by it, instead of giving us little scenes. If there's more scenes where she does had enough (especially the Akane slap scene) that would make her multilayered. And Anime Chiaki should explore more about her couldn't fit in socially at first and how she struggles making friends with it (I mean I forgot the term where someone couldn't socially get in?) , and further stress her out and Chisa eventually tried to help her more with friendships. On the other side, Kaede Akamatsu is actually the opposite, she had an effect on people especially pushing people way too far their limit it does give her more believable flaws than Chiaki did, because it affected people, especially how Maki called Kaede out in chapter 1 herself meanwhile, Chiaki does little. Kaede herself is also very sassy herself, and would be easily she get mad especially her scenes with Mui. Like yes! She is a character that actually affected people only by her death get character fringe and replaced by Shuichi, so I was mad, since Kaede is already interesting, it's a shame that the Dr team did improve their writing but the removing it all away, especially how interesting a protagonist could get. Kaede and Chiaki's have pro's and cons, but Kaede had more pros than hers though. But they both had different problems, character wise.
(Spoiler alert just case) Kaede deserved better. I wish she live longer if not making it to the endgame. I wouldn't mind if the protagonist switch between Kaede and Shuichi happened in Chapter 5 instead of chapter 1. Who will take her place as Chapter 1 blackened? Tsumugi. Let's be honest, Even if Kaede killed the mastermind or manage to expose her in the trial, the killing game will still go on. After all, Team Danganronpa can still control the killing game behind the scenes. As for Chapter 5? Imagine Kaede takes the arrow instead of Kaito and gives Kokichi the antidote, knowing what Kokichi is planning. Kaede kills herself in order to prevent Maki from becoming the culprit. The 5th trial will still be the same with Kaito inside the Exisal except the plan is to Expose the truth behind Kokichi's lies.
Literally every Danganronpa game where a character that start with very strong personality and also the one who lead the killing game most likely get killed. Just why Kodaka?
One thing to note, Maki specifically criticizes Kaede for saying optimistic things but taking no action during the time limit. She comes for her hard, and rewatching, I really think that’s when Kaede started her plan. She felt she wasn’t backing up what she was saying, and she didn’t want everyone to die. She trusted Shuichi’s deduction but didn’t trust his plan because she thought it didn’t take enough action, a belief spurred on by Maki’s words. Maki is really antagonistic to Kaede, which is really interesting considering her later role. It really seems like they were setting her up as a fake out antagonist/antagonist for Kaede, which is fascinating. Maki saw Kaede as foolish and naive, and she was not afraid to say it. And Kaede took those criticism to heart-that’s another thing I find fascinating, Kaede is really headstrong in some ways, but the moment she feels she did the wrong thing (like how she was criticized for the road of despair, or the murder of rantaro) she blames herself hard. She’s stubborn and optimistic until the moment she thinks she messes up, which I think is often overlooked. Unlike Kaito who stayed steadfast in his conviction that Kaede was right to push them during the Despair Road, Kaede feels really bad about it and apologizes. You have a whole Argue Argument with her about her being a bad person for what happened with Rantaro, because that’s how hard she takes stuff. She gets really focused on a goal (she has said she’s forgotten to eat or sleep while playing the piano, and said after the Despair Road that her attempt there was the method she used for learning piano-doing it over and over without any breaks before she gets it right) and wants to succeed on it, that she loses sight of the bigger picture. Her murder attempt was her responding and developing as a person in response to the criticism she got-she didn’t drag in anyone into it because she didn’t want to strong arm anyone like she did during the Despair Road, and she’s taking aggressive action because she was criticized for being all talk. She takes criticism really hard, and internalizes it, even the harsher parts. Which I think a lot of people ignore about her, because they see her as initially stubborn and mistake her for Kaito-Kaede does not stick to something after criticism, does not have complete faith in her beliefs, she takes the criticism and alters her behavior accordingly. She doesn’t get mad at the person criticizing her, either-she always, always, is shown to blame herself. Again, Kaito and Tenko has to defend Kaede during the despair road. She didn’t defend herself, she was just shocked that it was happening and hurt that everyone felt that way-that she might have hurt them when she was trying to help. You see the same thing happen before her execution-she doesn’t fight it, but accepts it as the consequence of her actions. Everyone else fights it, as you said.
Kaede is hyper-responsible. That’s another one of her strengths and flaws that people overlook. She takes responsibility for herself, for her actions. She takes so much responsibility she doesn’t even fight against her execution. She actively gets everyone else to *stop* fighting it. It’s very admirable that she tries so hard to learn from her mistakes, and take responsibility for them, but that’s the thing: she takes too much responsibility, for things that aren’t even completely her fault. She doesn’t know this, but she wasn’t even the one who killed Rantaro, and yet she died for it, because she thought she did and therefore felt she *had* to. No one would call what happened to her just, even if she *did* kill Rantaro, but she stood there and argued that she *deserved* such a cruel fate during her Argue Argument. That’s what makes that trial so tragic.
I also really like the array of emotions they let Kaede have. She’s optimistic, yet after the breakfast the morning after the Despair Road, she just goes to her room and cries. She’s tries so hard to stay positive, but we still sees her negative emotions. I actually like that she’s a liar and mistrustful in ways, as it adds a lot of depth to her. She’s not invulnerable, she’s human. I also find amusement in the moments she reminds me of Kokichi (pressing buttons on Kiibo, calling him a roomba, saying “....Just kidding!” And laughing during the trial after Shuichi accuses her, etc etc.) I think Kaede and him had the potential to understand each other to a degree, despite their outward opposing views (trust/mistrust) and how Kaede was annoyed with him. I’d be very interested in their dynamic if she lived, and I’m sad we’ll never see it develop. I also adore how she flirts with all the girls, to the point Himiko straight up asks if she’s playing for the other team (lol). We love an icon.
Kaede is one of my favorite characters. I think she always will be. She would have been an amazing protagonist, too, and I stick by that. I love Shuichi, but I’d trade him for Kaede in a heartbeat.

this was an AMAZING analysis! i wanted to mention this in the vid, but was scared to get *too* in depth and stray off topic, but the maki-kaede dynamic is really interesting because it can be argued maki was the entire reason kaede formed her plan in the first place. iirc, kaede decided to go forth with her plan after maki said something along the lines of “your speeches won’t work anymore, so do something about this yourself” this ofc relates back to kaede’s sense of responsibility over the group, as I’m sure hearing Maki say this only DOUBLED the amount of pressure she was feeling at that time, especially when she was already highly stressed out about the time limit AND the fact that one of them was potentially a traitor. this is why I love V3 - you can spend so much time discussing the little ins and outs of each character no matter how long they lasted because each of them contribute to the overall story of V3 in unique and important ways, and even seemingly small interactions between these characters end up mattering in the grand scheme of things.

I absolutely agree. The first two pro tags were endearing, but as a girl who is also head strong, hides her emotions, and just tries to keep the group together, she was the breath of fresh air I needed. I could never relate to all the others except for her, and her willingness to not give up really stuck to me. I was torn when she died. Rip queen you are more missed then you will ever know. It also gave more rep to the girls for a change, like komaru was nice but, Kaede was an amazingly written character who was down to earth. Thanks for reading this lol

It’s sad she died to push the male protagonist not be a wimp, he mentions her all the time despite them spending barely any time together for the angst. It would have been so much more interesting to have her as the protagonist than the boring shy male protagonist we see a lot in Danganronpa games. She would’ve been so refreshing to have, the only good female protagonist in the games.
I liked Despair Girls but Makoto’s sister was so annoying, I liked everyone but her. Even then she’s STILL!!!! a boring protagonist just like her brother.

I doubt you’ll see this but I’m gonna share my piece.
While the twist in concept was a neat idea...they picked the exact wrong place to employ it in every way. They picked the protagonist who was female, the most unique, and they employed the tired trope of using a female characters death to prop up a male characters arc. Also, Shuichi, though interesting, is yet another milquetoast softie, something we had for three games now.
Also people always try to use Makotos sister as an excuse, but they know full well we wanted one in a normal mystery game, so the argument is broken.
i definitely agree with you in some areas! while i personally do think the twist was a brilliant idea and it defines a lot of Kaede’s character for me, i still can’t help but wish they had chose to do it at a different time or with a different game..
i disagree with shuichi being a softie, though. he was a BIG step up from makoto and hajime and i believe out of the three his character arc is the most well-written and interesting! i do agree, though, that the setup for his character development was repetitive by this point. we already had two games of seeing the passive *male* main characters gain confidence and self-esteem throughout the story, and then the one time they switch it up with a fresh new female protagonist, they kill her. that stung a LOT when I first played V3 😫
and ikr! i love komaru, but when we said we wanted a female protagonist, we obviously meant in a *MAIN* series game. she’s still awesome tho haha

I would've loved to see both Kaede and Shuichi live through the whole or most of the game, actually. I loved their teamwork in the first chapter and seeing them work together from the get-go and having them be crime-solving partners throughout the story would've been amazing! I'd trade the "shocking chapter 1 twist" for a story with a strong buddy dynamic in a heartbeat.
Also, I'm not sure if this is controvertial or not, but I think Shuichi works much better as a secondary/supporting character to Kaede rather than being the protagonist. He's allowed to be a lot more proactive and intelligent in the first chapter due to not being forced into the "passive view point" role and him and Kaede's contrasting personalities work so well together. Too good to be true, I guess.
same! i love them both, but they were truly better together! would have been my dream if we got to play as kaede for daily life and then as shuichi for the investigations and trial. would have been a cool way to utilize two awesome protags :)
@@SensitiveDeku Perhaps it could be like in D2 where you get to control Nagito for a while. Two characters working together and discovering different clues that come together in the trials. That seems interesting! You could also perhaps take this idea further and have both characters be controllable during freetime, so you can choose not only who you can interact with, but also the protagonist interacting with them (that would mean twice the amount of dialog for every character though... Maybe that's asking too much).
Kaede would be a good protagonist if she have more screentime, but that's imposible now

I think Kaede is an outstanding protagonist because of her leadership skills. She really proved herself as a leader, whereas Shuichi wasn't as confident. When Shuichi was the protag, Kaito showed more leadership skills. Kaede I know for a fact would've led everyone to victory. She was confident and inspired everyone not to give up. I find that a key skill for a protag.
Honestly because Kaede was more defined as a character paradoxically she was MORE relatable. The more details you include of a character, the more you can relate because even if they’re not a perfect match to you, you can relate to their struggles and being passionate about things.
‘I’m hopelessly average, even my hobbies are normal.’ It’s so bland it’s hard to relate. There’s nothing here. If it’d been ‘my grades are mainly Bs (except English which … let’s not go there) and I like cycling and having the boys over for games on the weekend.) He’d be more relatable because average people still have their own hobbies and interests. As it stood there, they made him so uninteresting that it felt like he only became protag because he’s The Everyman and it’s just ordained. Kaede (and to a degree Shuichi), had a real personality and drive. Honestly I felt like Kaedes perving on the girls and not saying anything about the boys looks felt very r/men writing women and pulled me out, but her love of Piano (especially since it was a love that existed for its own sake, not to further the plot), her bluntness and her strong willed attitude made her more relatable. When she took the reigns it felt like it was because she was good in a crisis, not because it was God Ordained

I will say though, Shuichi is a lot more complex than a lot of people give him credit for (not saying this to you specifically of course just mentioning it because I’m of the opinion he’s FULL of personality, and unlike the previous two male protagonists he begins his development almost immediately)! his arc is honestly really relatable especially to people who suffer from anxiety like I believe he does. tldr; kaede and shuichi are just perfect 🥺

Kaede was the sunshine in the group, she was a symbol of hope from the very start while Makoto and Hajime were normal guys till the story progressed. I wish there was a gameplay where you can choose who gets executed: Shuichi or Kaede. By that after learning Kaede “killed” Rantaro as Shuichi you can pick to tell the truth or to lie. If you pick Kaede well plot resumes as normal but if you pick Shuichi then it goes down the “I’d trade my life for yours” fic
What if V3 was a game with TWO protagonists which in this case are Shuichi and Kaede. In some parts you play as Shuichi then vice versa to Kaede. Would have been so much more unique. Even though I never really liked Kaede, it would be a fun experience and it would give her some development to make me like her.

What if after the first trial and her being responsible for shuichi's death (who could have been a useful asset to end the killing game being the ulimate detective) only a few people of the cast talk to her (gonta, renko and kaito since they tried to defend her and believe in her) while everyone else ignores her, making her feel extremely guilty for letting shuichi take her place. Throughout the game, she has to overcome her guilty, get everyone to trust her again, that being hard since everyone is dying. Kaede would need to look at everything shes done and correct it. Another that could happen is that she actually kills shuichi and everyone who was defending her gets executed. This way people would have reason to be scared of her, being responsible for 4 murders. Again, she would have to learn to overcome her guilt and make friends in people (I think maki, tsumugi, kirumi and miu would be mostly shown throughout gameplay). Then when tsumugi is revealed as the mastermind, kaede would again feel awful and it would be even more upsetting, knowing that a friend had blamed her for the murder and let the people defending her die. With this, she would regret hope and despair. (That was a lot of writing)

gotta be honest here, it pisses me off how a character as interesting as rantaro and a charecter as likeable as Kaede both had to die in chapter 1 yet the unfunny, bland, and sometimes annoying Tsumugi got to live until the very end (yes i know the reason why and it still pisses me off)

Sensitivedeku You make very good points 😃 it would have so much more interesting if she did survive rather than shuichi. it also would have been interesting to see her go from what she was like at the start to being broken down & then putting herself back together. she also would have been open to constrictive criticism and changed in that way as well as learning to ask for advice and becoming more smarter/wiser and cunning as a result as for how she acted and behaved around everyone I don't see her changing radicaly. Also did you know it was possible for her to get past the first trial if she was being more level headed and used shuichis detective skills. as for how 1. the killing wound was on the back rantao's head as oppose to directly on his head 2. if I remember correctly in the last photo he seemed to be leaning forward while approaching the camera if her plan did work then he should have been lying face down on his stomach rather than the position he was in if I'm not mistaken that would be a position is the result of someone being attacked from behind given death was instant according to shuichi. with that being said she just would have needed to confess it during the class trial along with said proof as well as being willing test her trap for everyone as proof the next day. or request it as proof from monokuma that and remembering where the camera was placed with this being said as long as she gave the same reasoning as she did in-game she most likely would have been forgiven but she would have been given a stern talking to by everyone afterwards 😃

@@SensitiveDeku well they most likely would have took her side once she points everything all out after all the wound was on the back of rantao's head and not directly on his head🤕. once everyone realises that all blame would end up back on shuichi also Kaedae wouldn't be able to save him because she'd end up proving about a 90% chance that she's innocent shuichi would lose by a landslide against her 🤣. one thing I never understood is why they believe shuichi's theory about Kaedae being the murder in main game but gives no solid proof that she did kill rantaro like testing her trap. I mean anybody could have called him out on that and demanded he gives real actual proof before making final decisions 😃 which would have still ended in her favor given that her ball misses altogether I mean at worse monokuma could deny said request to test her trap and it would be 50/50 chance for the both of them to be guilty but one is certain they would have checked her trap next day that's a certainty.🙂

At one point I thought about Kaito bc they're both similar and he did defend her in moments, but it never fully sailed bc Maki and Kaito were too cute together. Also a 'controversial' pick would Kokichi. Not the biggest fan of Kokichi myself, but you gotta admit in V3 you were quick to judge the 'main' guys which would be Kokichi, Rantaro, Shuichi, and Kaede. You know the protagonist's friends/love triangle/harem.
And so I was going off of the Komahina and Naegami, the 'antagonist' and 'protagonist' working together to a common goal, but they're not gonna end up together trope. And three out of four died.
Where the hell did my harem go!? What was I suppose do now!? And after that I couldn't really find any ship that I loved as much as Kaede's lost harem. Maki x Kaito was cute, but Kaito died so that was also lost.

Well people say that some people were upset that we had another girl protagonist since we had to play as not one but two in ultra despair girls: another episode. Now in my little world I find that I bit irritating, since it was their choice to play the game or not and they played it but instead of not playing v3 them people left hate comments about Kaede.
That’s just how I think Kaede didn’t stay as the protagonist or the developers thought it would be a good idea.
That reminds of hetalia, where a bunch of fan girls were hating on all of the female characters just bc they thought they were stopping gay ships from happening or they were mary sues.

She wasn't the only one person who wanted to stop the killing game. Rantaro also wanted, that's why he took matters into his own hands. Shuichi and Kaito wanted to stop it as well as Kaede and Rantaro. All of the ultimates wanted to stop the killing game (more or less), but not everyone could do it.
And i'm sorry, but i'm gonna say it - Kokichi mostly wanted to stop the killing game. He took the role of the "villain" to make it real. Afterwards he sacrifed himself for his smart plan.
Yeah I know, he was a liar. I know he messed up with everyone. I know he did a lot of bad things. But we can't disagree with the fact that he acted like the true leader. Why am I saying that? Because he cared about everyone more than himself. You can see it in chapter 1 when they were trying to escape (this moment with a despair road or something like that). He stoped Kaede from trying and trying not because he was exhausted, but because the others couldn't stand on their legs anymore. There is also many situations were it's clear that Kokichi cared about his classmates, but it will take me more to write about it... so if someone is curious - just ask, I will try my best to specify those points.
Returning to the main topic - Kokichi is just a childish prankster who also was scared of this killing game and really, really distrustful about the others (during the game he trusted only Gonta and Shuichi) and... I think he also wanted at least one friend in this terrible situation (cause like who doesn't?). He lied to himself to bear everyday life in this hell (mostly to just feel better). That's why he acted so carelessly early in the game (for example saying that it's not boring if killing game is happening). And that's why most of the classmates didn't approve it. They saw him bad so then he acted badly to achieve his goal which he probably started working at after chapter 1.
And omg most importantly! Kokichi at the start of the game is genuine and truthfully with his emotions which I pretty fast forgot (idk why) when I was playing V3 for the first time (my first playthrough was like... 1-2 months ago? i think...). I'm writing it because in chapter 1 there is a lot of Kokichi's sincere sprites. Seriously, I am little bit surprised at how bad my memory is... Anyway Kokichi said (also in chapter 1) that "half his lies are actually told with good intentions" which is true, but his classmates didn't seem to remember it after all or maybe they thought it was also a lie - who knows? :v Oh, and yeah... I have also this quote: "N-No way... Are we really gonna die? I don't wanna die yet... I'm gonna survive! I'm gonna make it no matter what!" Kokichi said these words with his upset sprite which had genuine tears in his eyes (this sprite is also when Kokichi gets angry on Gonta in 4th class trial). So yeah... after seeing this and remembering what happend in chapter 5 I was like.... yeah.... really sad..... more like heartbroken.
Anyway he did... some messed up stuff, but he really tried to do something in this situation. After every death of his classmates he was really pissed of, but he showed it the most after Kaede's and Gonta's execution. He considered all of them as friends (even though he wasn't a big fan of Maki because of her ultimate talent, even though most of them didn't like him. I'm writing most of them, because Gonta is a pure gentleman who likes everyone. And there is also Shuichi who was really trying to understand Kokichi).
Kokichi did a lot of inappropriate actions to stop the killing game, but all of his efforts had a good intentions. Just like Kaede who wanted take down a mastermind (in my opinion Shuichi made a good point - they should first capture mastermind not kill him immediately).
That's why Kokichi is an anti-hero. You love or hate him - that's how this character works. It's a main reason why he is so interesting. Because of the central motive of the game (truth and lies), because of his lies, because of his well-built personality, because you need analize his words to truly understand meaning behind his actions, because he makes the game interesting. There is many reasons why Kokichi is overrated and it's understandable. He is really a well written character, just like Nagito.
In my opinion Kokichi and Kaede mostly wanted to end the killing game. But I think I should include also Rantaro to "people who the most wanted to end the killing game". Cause you know... he had a plan as well as Kokichi and Kaede. He tried to do something just like both of them.
So yeah... this comment is huge. I've never wrote such a huge comment before xD But I just love Kokichi and his whole personality and talking about this character is my favorite thing xD
By the way... I'm not a big fan of Kaede, but in my opinion she wasn't bad^^ Maybe because I don't like extravagant optimists and well... how to put it... I'm more of a realist type (sometimes with a pessimistic tendency). ;v And I'm also a distrustful person so I didn't quite understand why Kaede was so trustful with others and why she treated everyone as a friends in a literally few days... ;v I prefer more Shuichi as a protagonist and I really liked a plot twist in chapter 1 (don't hate me for this)^^ But I was sooooo sad during class trial and I was sobbing so hard xD Shuichi is my favorite protagonist by far. He is such a cinnamon roll. And I really, really love his character development. Regardless of my opinion of being trustfully in a such situation like killing game - I'm really glad that Kaede and Shuichi were friends (even though I think their relationship was a bit too rushed;/ and this is the main reason I don't ship them at all, but after all they are still cute tho^^). Uh... and... well... I really love saiouma dynamic and I think they are really adorable

I would like to metion something that, apparently not many people observe. I don't think Shuichi would get the development he got, if it wans't for Kaede. Her sacrifice made a big impact on him. I hate that people overall hate's her but ADORES Shuichi. I know people can have their opinions, but sometimes, just say kaede was annyoying, is not an argument. I do think Shuichi would get development even if Kaede lived, but i don't think it would be THAT great. Overall, i love her and i wish she stayed for the whole game. It's so sad to think she was killed for nothing, and in the end, Tsumugui dind't even explained much about this part.

I'm going to have to disagree with you mainly just because Shuichi is my favorite protagonist/one of my favorite characters and I love his story. But honestly, Team Danganronpa really could of just made a crappy protagonist for the 1st 2 chapters since Kaede wasn't going to stay around. But they instead decided to hit it out of the park with her. Honestly, if V3 didn't play out like it did. I wouldn't of minded Kaede staying as the protag since she is still one of my favorite characters in Danganronpa. But I don't think I'd be willing to trade in sad boy Shuichi. 😅😉

Not gonna lie though, the difference between her and Chiaki is that Chiaki's not interesting or I cared about her actions despite actually had a lot of effects about it, when her character flaws and how it actually annoy someone are lacking. The only flaw she did is that she failed to protect everyone, and even I'm actually peeved about her both the game and the anime, though even she has a lot of screentime, she lacked or is limited in terms of flaws that's why I disliked Chiaki, because she's perfect, I wished there's more exploration within her character Ai Chiaki's character should explore more about her bluntness and "Not feely" attitude that does come across as "someone who doesn't concern" people and how people would get affected by it, instead of giving us little scenes. If there's more scenes where she does had enough (especially the Akane slap scene) that would make her multilayered.
And Anime Chiaki should explore more about her couldn't fit in socially at first and how she struggles making friends with it (I mean I forgot the term where someone couldn't socially get in?) , and further stress her out and Chisa eventually tried to help her more with friendships.
On the other side, Kaede Akamatsu is actually the opposite, she had an effect on people especially pushing people way too far their limit it does give her more believable flaws than Chiaki did, because it affected people, especially how Maki called Kaede out in chapter 1 herself meanwhile, Chiaki does little. Kaede herself is also very sassy herself, and would be easily she get mad especially her scenes with Mui. Like yes! She is a character that actually affected people only by her death get character fringe and replaced by Shuichi, so I was mad, since Kaede is already interesting, it's a shame that the Dr team did improve their writing but the removing it all away, especially how interesting a protagonist could get.
Kaede and Chiaki's have pro's and cons, but Kaede had more pros than hers though. But they both had different problems, character wise.

I wouldn't mind if the protagonist switch between Kaede and Shuichi happened in Chapter 5 instead of chapter 1. Who will take her place as Chapter 1 blackened? Tsumugi. Let's be honest, Even if Kaede killed the mastermind or manage to expose her in the trial, the killing game will still go on. After all, Team Danganronpa can still control the killing game behind the scenes.
As for Chapter 5?
Imagine Kaede takes the arrow instead of Kaito and gives Kokichi the antidote, knowing what Kokichi is planning.
Kaede kills herself in order to prevent Maki from becoming the culprit.
The 5th trial will still be the same with Kaito inside the Exisal except the plan is to Expose the truth behind Kokichi's lies.
