No need to roll the motor over as the tightest clearance is when the valves are shut, so I check even before I install the pushrods. Just bolt the lid on with some modeling clay stuck to the inside of the cover, take off & check. Also, I don't go with centering the top lid when assembling because when that top lid tries to move to the right after assembly, it will get loose & leak due to the tapered interface of the top & bottom. When I'm tightening the top bolts, I push the lid hard to the right so it can't go any farther. Never get leaks.
When you buy a $50000 CVO , the motor should be built with top quality parts, HD run of the mill parts should not be used in their top of the line models.
This man is the best Harley mechanic I've ever seen... by far. It would be my dream to take a Fast Johnny Low Rider and have KB modify every aspect in a stage 2 build. I know it would be good for 250k miles!
I ran into that problem when I built my 88 to a 110. I used all the best products from the Dark Horse bottom end all the way up to the roller rockers. I had a dead cylender . After a couple of days of exasperation I went through all my paperwork to the roller rocker segment from S and S. They described this scenario. So out came the dremmel tool and end of problem. Thank you Kevin for the great videos! Because without your videos I doubt that I could have done the build myself.
Great video! I put S&S roller rockers on my 128 m8. 475 cam. I have been chasing a faint ticking noise in the rocker box for a while. I only hear it after it gets warmed up and hot. It purs like a kitten when it's cool. I wonder if this is my solution.
the problem i ran into is the previous owner installed an Delkron EVO in a FXWG frame..they did a good job on modifying the back tube.how ever the rocker box has no room for removal under the backbone..as i found out while trying to remove said rocker cover..I could see where they stuffed the motor in from the scratches on the top.So i need to go Negative clearance on the cover or heat up the frame and push up the backbone or flatten the under portion of the pipe just enough to get clearance. Its worse then taking off the rear cover on a soft tail...lol..thks for sharing always good stuff..Peace
How’s everything going at your new shop? Looks like you’re rocking and Rolling trying to play catch-up . I would love to hear updates on some of the things around the shop such as that new mobile dino that you got from Europe you talked about a little little during the move and unless I missed the video hadn’t really spoke of it since and also your Project you were doing I think with Schaeffers wondered if that’s going anywhere that kind of died on the table Wright glad to see you’re settling into your new shop. Hope to someday get on your project list and get some of your magic formy M8. I definitely appreciate all the great content you produce I’m not a builder and not that knowledgeable, but it is very interesting and enlightening to hear you talk about your amazing talents and skills and the pride you taking work that you do !!!
Kevin nice new shop! I worked on fighter jets mostly F-15’s at Boeing / McDonnell Douglas plant in St.Louis we would use clay or another type we called Dumb Dumb to check for clearance though we would put a dab of Vaseline on the top of the clay so it doesn’t stick to the part on top. Dumb Dumb was green in color and came in a roll with brown wax paper on it also. Wish you were closer to my location. 👊😎 2016 Ultra limited 1993 Softail Custom.
Research, research, research, is valid for most budget shoppers. Buy at reputable retailers or buy budget but only after you have researched and know exactly what you are getting. Further research is not calling many shops but using the web and other resources to ensure what you get is what you want
I was a little worried, you moving your shop, you might not have as much work. Glad to see you're keeping busy. Looking forward to some older engine videos.
Great freebie Agsin Kevin. Might I ask you how other Roller Rockers compare to S&S. Like say Screaming Eagle … OR should you weigh in on just shining and replacing with maybe a Fueling Shaft? My question goes towards finally checking my top end and servicing the Breathers with option for upgrading. Thanks again
Kinda off the twin cam topic but I'm chasing m8 valve train noise with stock rockers and high lift springs. Thinking about going to the screaming eagle adjustable rocker arms to quite things down and didn't know if you've used them before or thoughts on them. Easy way to get zero lash between the two valves without shims. Running 124ci with a cr512 cam. Been thru two sets of lifters. S&S precision are the quietest so far.
Kevin i have a 2021 Street Bob with the M8 114.It has 4000 miles it has started a top end noise when bike is warmed up in 4th or 5 th gear when under load or hitting the gas
Didnt know trask made bases. I used Vulcan and they seem fine but there is ticking. Going to tear down the top and see where. I do see the witness marks from the extra fat HD adj top. So more work.
Im thinking 💭 ver a year what is ticking in to my rocker box , after I change only the tappets , the pump and the plate. Nobody believe me ! They say that im crazy 🤣

It goes to show that it's the little things that make a build right. Thank you for the reminder.

Great video and info. Always a pleasure watching your wizardry in action.

Nice to know that theres an easy solution, Would like to see the results of grinding that rib away.
It is always nice to see someone who takes their craft seriously and does it the right way. Well done!!!

Awesome information! Thank you again Kevin for enlightening us again ! Great video
Using the centering pins is a great ideal for the boxes being centered. Thanks!!
Hey! Kevin, good video. This is the kind of stuff I like watching. I guess I just got a glimpse of the rocker arms going on my build.
I love listening and watching your videos Kevin - so much knowledge and expertise and it’s amazing. 🤜🏼

My uncle gave me a set of those JIMS tapered bolts. He used them when working in the cam chest but I see I can use them on the rocker covers as well
Yeh my 01 FXDX has that done and the 3/8 push rods. Yeh they catch when red hot. lol
I have been waiting for you to come back on!👍🤠

quality and knowledge, love your videos. Kevin, keep the beard😎
Lots of shiny things. Love that.
A VERY informative and useful video...nice one matey from across the pond.
Congratulations brother, rock on 👍☕️☕️✌️
Excellent video ❤
Always learning something new from you thanks a lot
Where there is a will. There is a way. Love the flags. Love the playdoh
Great video as always. Great mechanic.
Thanks sir for another informative video.
I'm not getting any notifications when y'all come out with a video at all thanks
Hit the bell and check your notifications settings in your phone for TH-cam 👍🏼👍🏼
Great vid Kevin. Slightly different question, do you approve the use of rocker lockers?
Playdo is awesome, but plastigauges are the correct tool for the job.
The man was using the "correct tool" for the clearance he was checking.
The little things ARE the big things !

Always great info! Thank you! Btw, are you a one man operation now? I don’t think I’ve seen or heard anyone else in the ship since you relocated!
Thank Kevin and congratulations on your 70,000 subscribers.

Thank you
Ingenious!!
Hey Kevin love the videos. Do you know of any good harley specific literature for machining ? I am a machinist and would love to get into the scene.
Good video 😊
You da man brotha 🤘🏻
Not a criticism, if the putty is a bit sticky I would put it on the webbing to mark where it needed to be removed from.
Blue tac would be an option?
Great video! A lot involved in a custom build!
just take your play doh and make like a really big gasket. Excellent garth.
Thanks for the tick tech tip. Say that five times fast.
Stockrocker support will they hold up
Can you put a thicker gasket or a new cover with higher clearance. Also, how do you know exactly where to grind down the webbing?
Any possibility to get the ticking to stop for a M8 117 as well?
How about some buell xb builds
Is that a late model Corvair on the lift under the cover? If so, what's the story?
Does this apply if installing roller rockers on a M8???
Kevin, how do i get ahold of you to schedule a build?
🤘😀
My evo knocks .any ideas ??
So my brand new 2024 is ticking like crazy.. 100% stock
I dint think it’s normal going in for my 1k oil change. See what Harley says
Does this work with a cam that has a higher lift? Do you just grind more off of the cover?
The cam lift wont have an effect on this area much I wouldn't think.
no matter what ya do it'll still break on ya, ha!
Play dough not just for kids.
EITHER GET A BAXTER MOTOR IR BUST LOL
Might should look elsewhere. Could be rocker arm but i would bet money it isn’t.
Im thinking 💭 ver a year what is ticking in to my rocker box , after I change only the tappets , the pump and the plate. Nobody believe me ! They say that im crazy 🤣
Is it me or does anyone else here captain kirk
well this nothing new ,did this twenty years ago on twinkies...."so thanks".
Get rid of the Harley and you'll stop the ticking!
Get a Real bike!!!
