      I'm no tech but based on another video talking about valve springs, I bet that cam was causing the valve springs to bind and forcing the cams and tappets against each other.

      Get the last year model of a shovel that would be 1984 ...pay the money and buy a harley factory service manual ...there is just too many extra techincal specs in factory manuals that are detecated to just the model and year . with photos and arrows of critical to do's and red x's over pics of not to do's .....if this was a metric project i would tell you the same thing ...here lately ebay has sellers giving up their harley bibles with a few greasey finger prints on a few pages for half price ..so dont ever over look ebay ...why i recomend the last of the shovels if you got your heart set on a shovel .in 1984 the shovel heads already had all the advantages' updates and mods that comes on the evo ...like the oil system that has the upgraded oil pump. And jetted sizing from big to small 1/8th npt compression fittings to connect the external oil pump to the rear head 1st then your short cross over to the front head ...each one of those brass compression fittings have a different size feed hole through it
      ..these oil jet hole are calibrated to maintain a constant minuium oil supply to the valve guides .not too much and not too little but just enough to lube the top end at 7000 rpm if you wanna get stupid crazy and blow metric liter bikes away. ...check sputhe engineering for alumium jugs with steel sleaves that fit shovels. Titainum Behive valve springs wond for high lift cam so you will not have any coil binding or distortion ..fueling oil pump roller comp cam lifters. Adjustable pushrods roller tip rockers and for cheap a set of " rocker lockers" when you fire this behemoth off fir the 1st youll think you did sumting wong with the build as your rocker pin lockers wont make a tic klic or a klac only the simering spinning sounds of rollers rolling...overkill for 7000 rpm rice rocket walks of shame. Hehehehehahaha ..damnit im so evil...coworker ask me what the differents between S&S vs harley cranks and rods. He said that his brother worked at a small foundry in chicage that only made flywheels and rods ..they would ship half to harley and the other half to S&S ..wouldnt you know it ..what a rip ..and aint that just too goddamn bad , harley and s&$ is the same shit from the same boiling pot of metal ..have someone who knows how to shave 2 1/2 pounds off your flywheels .why so they will fly that why ..im determind to turn you into a totally addicted gearhead pig ..and this is why we cant have nice things

      Truck freight is not particularly expensive so if you live in the continental US you could send him an engine or (weighs less) a stripped core to build. It's quite common to send engines out of state to get what you want. I do.

    I switched brands exactly for this reason. It's amazing that us Harley Davidson owners actually put up with this stuff from a motorcycle company. We buy a $30000 motorcycle and then start throwing parts at it. I switch to a different brand not necessarily a better brand but at least a brand that we don't have those problems with the bikes. The idea that you buy a motorcycle and you immediately do performance work to the motor is ridiculous. It's a marketing plant it's not your motorcycle.

    I believe the roller needle bearings in the lifters failed first. The rollers stopped turning causing the roller to drag across the cam surface. Both metal debris from the needle bearings and the cam lobe wear got into the rod bearings causing that bearing to fail.

    Kevin, I just discovered your "tear down" series. Very nice! While your descriptions and visual references are informative, have you considered wrapping up the videos with a list of parts to be replaced, or the outcome of a motor (like it was trashed and not worth rebuilding)?

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Havent seen one yet not worth rebuilding really. Parts lists vary considerably and so does each persons build. I fear listing items, that some would see that as the only solution....with custom engines, that's not the case but this is a good idea as a guide. Thanks for the insight.

    Stumbled across this video. I'm a gearhead and work on my own bikes. I follow a couple car channels as well. There is a pandemic of bad new parts lately especially lifters! Many car engine builders are reusing lifters if there good. When they go they take out the whole motor. Similar to what you have there. Just an FYI. Great video.

    100% shows bad builders from awesome ones.

    Great tear down video highlighting all problematic areas. Out of interest, would you recommend a complete rebuild or purchase a crate motor for the owner of this 2016 CVO 110?-what would be the most economical?

      Hi Kevin. I own and ride this model. In the forums and from other riders, I frequently hear about these engine failures. Generally, between 30-50k miles. I’m at 30k with no issues. What should I do preventative in your opinion, if anything?

      Schachat01, what did you decide to do ?

      @@amirosmanbasic3719 I have a consult tomorrow. At a minimum I plan to replace the lifters, add rocker lockers, cam bearings, new cams and a new cam plate. Thinking about a compression bump but concerned about added heat which could affect longevity of the bike. Want to learn more about both the 113 and 117 bolt on kits.

    I got a CVO Fat Boy I think it has 8k on it with a 110 . I bought it drove it home and parked it . I don't trust stock Harley lifters at all including the crank shaft to be honest ..My other two bikes money pits lol have SS engines which seem to be OK. To be honest the 110 I have seems to be a tame compared to the other two ..But it shiny lol. Enjoy the videos

    BTW Crown Alloys make a great MIG wire for cast iron suited to machinery repair and of course jug mods. It uses argon shielding gas which you'll have anyway for TIG.
