Kevin, I've been watching your videos for quite some time. Hands down, you are the most articulate motorcycle guru I've found on the inter-webs. Many thanks for taking time to create videos for those of us who enjoy getting our hands dirty!
He, thats the same color and logo as my cam plate. 🙂👍 Perfect timing. My cams are pressed in and if I remember correctly my shim spaces the chain sprocket. Not sure but I do remember a spacer in there somewhere. I am about to refresh the top end and install a new Red Shift cam in my old heritage now that the garage has thawed out. I just need to assemble the necessary base and head gaskets, tear down and reaasemble. Then install the new fuel pump and related in tank paraphernalia. Tune and ride her wheels off. Its been since Christmas 22 since she ran given I used to live in Phoenix and it got too hot to ride really early. Then moved here in August during the extreme heat, and then it quickly got too cold for this desert rat to ride here in Iowa. So, I went from one non riding season right into another non riding season. Bad timing on my part but happy wife, happy life. You know how it is. But now the old girl is about to be resurrected and ridden some. Bike, not wife 😅. Lots of new back roads to explore. I still want to send her to you for a rebuild. Maybe I should call you for the gaskets and a new drive belt. She isnt close to stock so cant just order parts for a '05 Heritage. Those parts are too small. 😊 Be safe Kevin. Later, Ron. PS, I just realized my card didn't update for you. I just forced it. Damn U Tube, thanks for the notification google. Not. Ugg. 😮
Perfect timing! I have a sporty that i just pulled the cams out of yesterday! Now to find your video on how to measure these puppys! Something new to look forward to. 👍
I’m no mechanic, but with you mentioning the tolerance of before 07 as opposed to 07 and later. The later ones seem to have more redundancy built into the cam plate re the 120 thou compared to the 110 thou washer you put in. I own a Sport Glide, but I think that it doesn’t need that setup ( or you can prove me wrong ). Anyway I’m a newish subscriber and I do enjoy you vids as even I can understand what your saying all the way to Australia.
Kevin, very good info you gave us. I watched a guy on here put in a entire cam chest with chain's , cam's, everything and he stressed the end play. The set that he installed was by Fueling and it came with 3 new washers in 3 different thickness's. Thanks Much. Take Care Brother
Informative video as usual sir. Thanks for taking the time to make it and keep us DYIs straight. Wishing you the best of luck with the storms, heard they're pretty nasty.
0:08 Thanks Kevin for your time you dedicate to teaching. You help me to also help other people, possibly saving lives from breakdowns on the road. God bless.
What can happen after enough heat cycles with not enough play, the eyelet of the c-clip can brake off.........ask me how I know. I've seen dealers make the same mistake............good to know thanks Kevein.
Thanks Kevin, great info. when i was doing this stuff on my first harley, I double cheecked then reread the paperwork. it happens to be an 87 flhtp with 170,000 miles currently. looking forward to time off work this summer to run around on it.
Awesome thanks. As a clockmaker who has recently gone from a 1340 to a '99 tc88 with 25k miles on I'm on the lookout for the best information. Your channel is now top of the list. Had a quick look at the spring tensioners to make sure it's good for a few months shakedown before the winter project. Don't know what cams are in there but the spring tensioners are not staying.
Is interesting. Makes me think of flat tappets in a typical flat tappet engine....lobes and lifters aren't perfectly square to each other. Otherwise, the lifters wouldn't spin...and wear out quickly since the same spots are hitting every time. That's well known. Are the flat-tappet lobes biased all in the same direction such that the cam is always pushed in one direction? I sorta doubt that but don't know for sure. It is probably a good thing that a roller cam can change position even if just slightly to keep the same surfaces from encountering each other endlessly. I'd think that would maximize lifetime just like axle gear ratios are never even numbers...a hunting gear set where the same teeth mesh the least as possible. However, the roller to cam surface ratios likely makes this irrelevant unless they are 1st order harmonic Plus, slip is likely anyway.. Probably I am overthinking this but maybe not. Too tight is never right though.
I hope you have time to respond or perhaps see this question Kevin I do have a question if I may? I have been re reviewing some of the videos you have dune about 3years back about the crack case run out on the twin cams and in this series you was talking about the 2007 an 2008s problems with this problem I got to say it got me thinking I have seen your videos on how to read a spark plug an how they can tell them a lot about what’s going on inside I an in this series you talk about how is motor cycle only had around 20,000 miles on it an how this problem was fixed before it got a lot worse. I have a 2017 heritage classic with the 103ho with 17,000 miles on it and it me to wondering at what age or what mileage would you recommend that one pulls these plugs just to see if we can tell if run out/dumping is an issue?
Hey Kevin, playing catch up on the videos. We are going through a Kitchen re-model. A lot of good information there. I am guessing that same cam plate and cams are upstairs in my goodie box. Hope to be seeing you soon.
I'm doing good Kevin, I hope you can say the same. A question I have is how much end play can you get away with on '06 and earlier tc's? Is .023-.025 safe?
Nothing beats experience!I did update on my'02B last year, I do remember using straight edge and feeler gage &don't remember changing end play.Well 2y and 7000 in parts & tools a total rebuild is in near future. Curious if I did it correctly...lol...sure hope I did $$$ Thanks
Kevin, given people talk about cranks being susceptible to slipping when downshifting hard - why haven't big twims had a slipper clutch option until later touring TCs and M8s?
My 99 king had frosting on a 25,000 mile (40,000km) bike from new. What would have caused that ?? I did replace all cams lifters chains springs and bearings with S&S cam and good lifters and quality bearings Though Thanks. All good tutorials,,
Kevin: I get the cam endplay (thank you) You talked briefly about check the cam gear alignment but did not go into any detail on that process..... Is that and entirely separate conversation?
Hi sir. I have 120 r twincam.I was trying to put a smaller cam in. I have un bolted all 6 bolts and the oil pump. It has a screem eagle billet cam plate. It won't budge/ like it still bolted somewhere. The motor has never been started yet. Any Idea? Thank you.
With all due respect that isn't how that works . Rear cam thrust washer ( variable thicknesses) goes up to the cam journal end . Is used to set sprocket alignment to the crank sprocket. The distance from flange to end of the journal and the width of the plate determines end play. Front cam has a .100" washer held by a bowed snap ring to keep the washer tight to the end of the cam journal ... end play determined by cam journal and cam plate dimensions also
You really gonna sit there from your couch telling a proven engine builder that makes his living with a good reputation that he doesnt know what hes talking about?
I ride an M8, but several of my riding brothers ride TC’s.. I like being the knowledgeable one in the group.. and who knows. I may own a TC bike one day.
Incredibly informative videos.. i have a 06 Fatboy CVO (Red).. As you know it comes fully chromed , injected, and with the screaming eagle 2 kit.. should I upgrade the cam and pump kit? Also what do you recommend for the first start up of the season? Unfortunately we Canadians have to hibernate for 6 months and sleep with our bikes.. I believe all the oil drains back into the case... Cheers
Being from Michigan I can fully relate to the woes of hibernation 😂. From what I have learned from the infinite wisdom of Kevin, I'd say upgrade if you can. The stock cast cam support plates are weak, and the oil pumps leave a lot to be desired. Especially at idle. However you should have hydraulic cam chain tensioners, so that is a plus compared to the mechanical spring ones my 2000 had.
Kevin, I've been watching your videos for quite some time. Hands down, you are the most articulate motorcycle guru I've found on the inter-webs. Many thanks for taking time to create videos for those of us who enjoy getting our hands dirty!
Kevin, I learn something Everytime I watch these videos! Glad you do them👍🤠
M8s need the timing gear shimmed too. same shim kit as the TC part # 25928-06

This may be the shortest video that you ever made, thank you!
Thanks Kevin take care in those storms buddy, informative as always ..👍🏻🇦🇺
Thanks Kevin this video came out just in time as I’m going to start building up the camchest in my TC 96 in the next couple of days.
Good info. Everything has a perfect fitment size. Get some Captain Morgan and watch the storms roll in and out, be careful.
Always expert info!

Working on my first V Twin motor job as it ate a cam bearing and oil pump, Really appreciate the straight forward and knowledgeable tips. Thank you.
It truly is about the details, you are the best.
Thanks for moving to Tennessee, and for another informative video.
What can happen after enough heat cycles with not enough play, the eyelet of the c-clip can brake off.........ask me how I know. I've seen dealers make the same mistake............good to know thanks Kevein.
Good advice 👍

Thanks Kevin. Always value your input and viewpoints. Have learned so much watching your channel and content.
Thanks for all the twin cam info you put out there. I’m still contemplating what to do with my 14 103HO.
Thank you for being generous with your time and gift
You are the man. Hope new shop has lighting protection. Hope to bring you one of my twin cams on day. Super Video. Thank you.
Thank you for the video
I sure like the looks of the new building!!!

As always , great video , love all the info
Mr Baxter have you written any how to books? If not, perhaps I could help write for you. If so, where might they be bought?
I'm doing good Kevin, I hope you can say the same. A question I have is how much end play can you get away with on '06 and earlier tc's? Is .023-.025 safe?
I really like your new shop.
Second
Thanks Kevin.
All videos are great! One day I will be as smart as you!!!!
Thanks I did not check mine on the front cam. 10 k In hopefully all good. Time for you to buy a Generator Ole boy

thanks Kevin, to avoid translation errors, could you indicate in writing the tolerances you recommend checking? Thank you
How do you select the right cam to upgrade to?

Thanks for the info. ❤
Thanks Kevin. What about excessive spring load for the valve? They have an hugely impact on rollers and cam lobes! Right??? Greetings Peder
That makes sense thank you for the heads up
Thanks for the info always learn from you
Nice S&S
Thank you Kevin
This is also true when using chain driven cams also correct? You would check the end play the same way? Thanks kevin
Kevin: I get the cam endplay (thank you) You talked briefly about check the cam gear alignment but did not go into any detail on that process..... Is that and entirely separate conversation?
And there’s 10,000 twin cam owners who appreciate the information…..
Tanks for your videos!! I seen in a video instaling a camshaft bearings , with humer. What do you say about this?
That cam plate you said was an 07 and newer but isn’t that cam plate the same as the cam plate in the 06 Dyna models also
Very good info. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you for the info
Hi Kevin, ever hear of the throttle body clap after changing cams? I got it on my 110 at low rpm. Any cure? :)
Thank you!

Love your work 👌
👍👍👍
Great info!!
Self-clearancing 😝 👍
Glitter factory 😂
Makes me happy that I have a 2005😅

and there’s a 1000 M8 owners saying “this doesn’t apply to my bike”….
I ride an M8, but several of my riding brothers ride TC’s.. I like being the knowledgeable one in the group.. and who knows. I may own a TC bike one day.
😂
First 🎉
If I was a millionaire, I could do my own engine up-grade. Shipping and import duties have ruined us.
.110 comes stock .who ever did the cam first off put in the wrong spacer or the factory made a boo boo
So....... Harley sucks.
