Message from Alfred: Sirs and Madams, I fear that Batman: Vengeance cannot possibly be placed at Number 8 until Master Bruce completes all tutorials. Ta!
Disappointed to see Batman: The Movie so low. It really was one of Ocean's best games back when it launched. To be fair though, the CPC version was grim. The C64 and Amiga versions were good and pretty faithful to the movie.
Batman Begins That film has pretty much killed any hopes of another Bruce Wayne Batman origin story for being pretty much flawless and starting a beloved trilogy and leading into one of the best loved films of all time in The Dark Knight The reason this is my favourite above The Dark Knight is simply because it is somewhat light and fun compared to it's sequels, making for easy viewing to pass away an evening in a more relaxed manner
I can see how nostalgia and faithfulness landed the SNES Batman & Robin at #3. It's really ambitious for its time, looks great, and rewards fans of the TV series (especially in Riddler's stage. But there were many points throughout that felt like difficulty walls (Two-Face's driving stage, swinging over Poison Ivy's spike pit, the jump to the blimp, etc.) or outright softlocks (Scarecrow's stage). I kind of expected it to be lower on the list.
I still think it’s an amazing Batman game, maybe not as good as the Arkham games but with the limitations of the snes I think it’s as good as it can be for the time
To be fair Batman The Caped Crusader was probably the best computer tv tie in of the late 80s as it perfectly matched up to the Adam West show. Most Ocean software gamers were pretty good at their time and it’s a bit unfair to rank them so badly considering what they were up against on computers at the time
@@adambamford5894 Sure, but the combat, and traversal in Knight is phenomenal. If I want good bosses I play City or Origin, for a good story I play Asylum or City, but for gameplay alone: Knight is undeniably the best. Everything feels much smoother.
BrokenGod Ent. The gameplay is only good when you actually play as Batman himself, but 60% of the gameplay is in the tank. the tank stuff is fucking awful, they made this giant open world full of beautiful buildings to climb and glide onto, but then stick you in a giant bumper car and fight drones. They even made the riddler stuff over reliant on the bat mobile, (giant race tracks? wtf!)If the direction of the game was different, and focused more on the core gameplay elements of its predecessors it would have undeniably been the best game in the series. But instead we got a tank/car game disguised as a Batman game that has piss poor writing, lazy “plot twists”, no real boss battles, made by a studio that would rather be making any other game then a Batman game. It kind of sucked honestly
Maybe better than Arkham Origins, if that much. But all Rocksteady entries are far superior. Now, if they called it "Bruce, the Telltale series", I would have to concede. Because it really was the best Bruce Wayne game.
I go back and forth on Asylum and City. I definitely agree that the Metroid-esque level design in Asylum is overall more satisfying than the open-world City, but on the other hand, I do enjoy the third act of City more than the disappointing finale of Aslym. Those would be my top 2 Batman games, with the absolutely legendary NES game at third place.
Batman on the Gameboy is actually one of my guilty pleasures. And for a Gameboy game, the music was pretty awesome. The only problem I had with it were the boss fights. Only five of them, and three were vehicle battles in the Batwing levels. The other two were Jack Napier and the Joker. A bit disappointing, if you ask me.
I believe they use other metrics than just their own opinion of each game. Isn't that also the one that was stated to be a competent game but not really a game that depicts Batman well?
Nick C Too predictable. There are many good games in the series, but sadly there are too many detractors for this list to ever be fair. Besides, plenty of lists exist.

I don’t understand the hate on Arkham Origins. His stated reasons don’t explain why it is the “black sheep of Arkham games”. The game play is the same and it has arguably the best story. They did an excellent job focusing the origins of the relationship between Batman and the Joker from both character’s perspectives. Also, this is the best portrayal of Bane I’ve ever seen in a video game with his transformation from being a physically intimidating presence that is also super intelligent to his slide into a drugged out mindless monster. 1-3 on this list should be Asylum, City, and Origins in any order. Asylum started it all. City opened the game up to a more open world (much more than Asylum). And Origins was the best story. Knight is 4 because while the Batmobile was a cool addition, the game play with it got tedious. No other Batman games deserve to be ranked above any of them.
The Amiga version of Batman 1989 was fantastic and still stands up today; it's a shame you picked the Amstrad version, as the Amiga one would definitely be a lot higher on the list.
@DejaVoodooDoll Again Ocean made games that scored really highly. Platoon, Robocop and The Addams Family from memory got great reviews. Robocop especially for Spectrum was a massive success. Batman on the Amiga sold the computer.
@DejaVoodooDoll Games can be flawed but still fun. The most polished triple A titles end to be absolutely boring compared to more technically limited, more flawed games, the Arkham series being one example.
Batman 1989 was great on the C64 and even better on the Amiga. And Batman Caped crusader was a fun little game. But most of the systems you listed were not consoles.
The Batman games Ive played rank 1. Batman Arkham City 2. Batman Arkham Knight 3. Batman Arkham Asylum 4. Lego Batman ( 2008 ) 5. Batman Arkham Origins
Putting the telltale movie over city and not having the top spots between asylum and city is criminal. Saying the open world was too big for you but didn’t like Batman begins was too linear even though asylum is linear in a sense where you go from one building to another. Horrid
I really appreciate that you listed the SNES' The Adventures of Batman & Robin so high. A fantastic game that came during a time when Konami was one of the world's best developers. Criminally overlooked, but perhaps understandablly so; I remember this game being released the day after Christmas, 1994, and basically slipping under most people's radars in the process. I ended up getting this game from my grandfather rather than a 32X. Talk about dodging a bullet.
I will actually contest the placement of Batman Forever on the SNES. While the Fighting Game commands for special tools took getting use to for people who don't play those games, they were indeed special attacks meant to help you nuke bosses and you and your friend needed to pick 2 that fit the stages needs. It was also fun to play with a friend in the same way all those other "friend tester" games like Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers and New Super Mario Bros are like. But that's not the end of its charm though. First, there is a code to enter that givers infinite uses of all your special items if you want to go ham but more importantly there is an actual fighting game hidden in the Training mode where you and a friend pick between EVERY CHARACTER IN THE GAME, most highly unique in their moves sets and attack options making it one of the largest rostered fighting games ever made with access to their special moves in MK style glory.
Dude....really? The Batmobile sections are so horrible, Said Arkham Knights is one of the worst twists ever if only cause everyone and their mom already knew who he was, and easily Scarecrow is the worst of the Villains from the trilogy. What Mastermind gives people a chance to evacuate the city first? That creates no tension cause everyone already got out. Also they really should have let Joker stay dead, he had no reason to be in that game.
@@TheInhumanBeatdown yeah the game has its faults but you got to appreciate how the combat and the stealth are the best the series has ever seen, I absolutely love Arkham knight but I will say the tank battles were awful and most of the boss fights were disappointing. Arkham City is the best Batman game Iv ever played. Switching between Bat and Cat. Introduction of the ice bombs. The boss fights. The storyline. It was epic And yet I still understand why you would rank asylum over it. But telltale ? Na.

@@theshadow4887 I agree, I mean I understand why everyone keeps mashing the games together as they look similar, but they really deserve to be called their own entries instead of just being called the same game with a different story.
I reckon if I went back and played Origins now with the DLC and stuff I would love it but at the time of release I felt so betrayed that it just ended up being another Batman vs Joker story
I strongly disagree with several placements: -Arkham Origins should be in top 10...any title that introduces you to Gotham's history (Cyrus Pinkney, Solomon Wayne, and history of major landmarks) is a top 10 Batman game -Arkham Knight should be higher, especially against Batman: Vengeance and any Lego Batman title...I think Arkham Knight did a great job...I didn't like how it concluded the Arkham trilogy, either, but I never had any problems with the Batmobile and the tank combat...the "Most Wanted" and "A Matter of Family" story DLCs made the game that much better -Why is Lego Batman 2 over Lego Batman 3? I've played them both, Green Loontern is hilarious, and exploring the Lantern homeworlds is great In reality, each of the Arkham trilogy (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Knight) and Arkham Origins are easy to replay and have a different experience...you can push yourself in combat and stealth encounters to try new things each time you play...I am still finding new ways to approach Stealth Sequences in Arkham Knight Otherwise, I guess the placement is acceptable...100% agree with Arkham Asylum's placement. Also, wasn't there 2 Batman Telltale Games titles?
1:00:00 is actually a reference to an episode of Duck Dodgers where he gets the Green Lantern suit in the laundromat by accident. The episode was written by BTAS creator Paul Dini
Arkham City deserves to be #1, sure Arkham Asylum was a phenomenal game but once you finish the story, then what? There are no enemies to fight and the gliding mechanics was barely useable In Arkham City, They added Open World, Side Quests, New Game Plus, More Riddler trophies and challenges, and the gliding was better. And although it would also end up like Arkham Asylum, they delayed the inevitable and gave us more to do before there is nothing left to do
The Batmobile arcade game from 2013 is wrongly ranked in my opinion. I spent a load of money finishing that game and tought that it was repetitive and it didn't get me to feel like I was into the strongly resistant batmobile... The story was also not interesting.
I actually like the rise of Sin Tsu as the multiplayer aspect was prettygood, and a hand a good selection of playable characters, with the unlocking of Batwoman
23:05-23:18 I agree, I think certain licensed games in general could make adding their own original characters for the game itself to expand upon. I think Arkham Knight and Batman the Telltales series comes to mind for memorable characters/villains.
I've played Batman Forever on Sega Mega Drive back in 1996 with a friend, alot, and we had so much fun... and we're still friends. I don't think the narrator played all those games when they were released.
A lot of these games were pretty impressive at the time they released, though. It was a time when even smooth animation or 3D movement was something to be impressed by.
z12091233 Both seasons of Batman Telltale were different, too, with the second season adding choices in combat, and two entirely different plots for the fifth season. Your point?
Sorry, but I feel like Rise of Sin Tzu was a much better quality title than where it was ranked. Still watching as I type, so maybe I'll see some games I didn't know about. I watched a play through of Vengeance and was pleasantly surprised. It's like another lost episode of BTAS/New Batman Adventures and I'd really like to try it out if there's a present day market place where I can acquire it. GOG maybe? Also 1:08:13 Anyone else notice Riddler in the background 😁😆😂🤣
I understand that City built on Asylum in a number of ways. I'd even argue it's the better game. But Asylum will always be my favorite, largely due to sheer amazement I felt at the faithfulness to the character. Not even City can touch that level of nostalgia for me
Asylum does kinda have its own feel that's a little bit lost in the rest of the series. For me that doesn't quite make up for the disappointing boss battles which lose it my top spot, but it's still definitely up there, and for a first attempt it was bloody amazing.
Arkham City has serious objective flaws. I'm beyond tired of people heaping so much undeserved praise on the most relatively disappointing video game sequel since God of War 2. It expanded the core gameplay from AA well in most ways. However, the implementation of armored enemies in combat and predator was a goofy and artificial way to try to make players use automatic/loud takedowns. The titans of Arkham Asylum were simple yet viscerally satisfying enemies to fight. But in AC you just perma-stun them and mash square while Batman's head and shoulders embarrassingly clip into him. Not all proper boss fights were winners, either. Grundy was a pseudo boss fight puzzle reminiscent of the lamest parts of God of War 2, and the actual one-on-one part of the fight with Ra's was a wholly inferior version of the battle with Poison Ivy in AA. By far the shortest campaign of the four main games. Everything involving Catwoman was mediocre at best and came in strange intervals. But that absolutely horrendous story is what cripples it. The writing is like sub-par fan-fiction (if I ever read fan-fiction). Overtly nonsensical plot holes, laughably contrived events and cringe-inducingly juvenile dialogue throughout. This is the norm, not the exception. It's thematically bankrupt as it pretends to be epic and profound with (admittedly) stirring music. Look, every Arkham game has some contrivances, but they're nowhere near as bad nor as widespread as in AC. Just about every aspect of the main story can be meticulously pulled apart. It's not in any way comparable to Dini's fantastic contributions to Batman: The Animated Series and its feature films. This is not the Mask of the Phantasm of gaming. I have to say that some of the side missions like Zsasz's phone calls were actually much, much better written. Some of the major plot twists were embarrassingly self-spoiled. We could see that there was a healthy-looking Joker that gassed Batman, the real Joker coughing as he's filming Clayface Joker, and we could see Clayface Joker facing the mirror and seeing the sick Joker. I don't know how any person could be surprised by the end reveal (attempted one, anyway). I will say that the challenge mode would've been easily the best of the series, but the absolutely scummy practice of carving out DLC character and challenge maps that could've been on the disc on day one, then selling them back to gamers. Each of the four main Arkham games are guilty of this to some degree, but City is absolutely the worst offender. To top it all off, we had to stare at a purple-caped Batman for the entire game the first time through (there is a cheat code to use alternate skins, but that wasn't known until months after the game released). As a game, I definitely prefer Arkham City over Arkham Origins. But the Arkham City I played is nowhere near deserving the praise it gets. I honestly thought I had a spoof copy of the game after the first time I played it.
@@Great_Scott_ I agree with a great deal of that. The Open World, expanded to a full neighborhood of Gotham, feels far more hollow and false than the grounds of Arkham in the first game. This is a problem that plagues so many open world/city simulator games: far too them feel 10 miles wide and an inch deep as regards NPC interaction and gameplay repetition. That's one of the reasons I remain so impressed with GTAIV and GTAV: they're large maps that also feel distinctly alive, if that makes sense. Arkham City doesn't really accomplish that; and the criminal NPCs are, criminally, lacking in variation. The idea of a Prison City -- ala Escape From NY and No Man's Land -- sounds far more interesting and deranged than what this game actually provides.
This has been said below already but... ARKHAM CITY 5TH?!?! That could well be in my top 5 games ever. Arkham Knight at 10 and Origins at 15 are also outrageous in my opinion.

It seems like you forgot the 2017 sequel to the *Batman theTelltale Series* entitled *Batman The Enemy Within* . The Telltale games look good, but seem less like a game than an interactive story. I would buy a faithful PC or console port of the 2013 *Batman arcade* game if it were available. That said, I am going to say my top choices are 2010's *Batman: The Brave and the Bold* for Wii, followed by the 1994 *Adventures of Batman and Robin* for the SNES. That's strictly a personal preference based on the fact that I'd prefer a 2D side-scrolling fighting game or beat'em-up over a 3D cinematic game like the Arkham series. The ideal Batman game in my mind would be a 2-player game based on Street Fighter IV as a model, using the Batman family of characters from the comic books (Nightwing, Robin, Red Robin, Damian, Batgirl, Batwoman, Azrael, Man-Bat, etc., and maybe even with multiple versions of Batman to choose from like 1939 Batman or Batman Beyond) and the Batman villains, where one player gets to choose from the heroes list of playable characters, and the other player gets to choose from the villains list of characters in a "VS" mode, or choose to play a 2-player co-op game against the system controlling the villains. Or the same model game using the versions of characters from Batman the Animated Series and its follow-ups.
How such a long list could be so well thought out is amazing. While I don't agree with every choice (NES is number 1 for me), the reasons you made for each entry are so well described, that I can fully understand why you made them.
yeah, but still amazed that it got 2nd place :> I'm sure there might be better looking games on nes, but at the time I was blown away by how beautiful well designed it looked at the time.
Top tip: if you're ever reviewing 8-bit games from the 1980s released on multiple systems, never choose the Amstrad CPC version. The Amstrad CPC was the third worst 8-bit system with the third worst versions of any released games. You should have tried Batman: The Movie (1989) by Ocean Software on the C64, or the Amiga version, which has 3d driving levels different to the 8 bit versions.

@@johnnylasagna228 It did away the metroidvania level design for an open world. Personally, I find the labyrinthian interlocking level design much more satisfying, in large part because it lends itself for better pacing. Sure, the open world is also fun, in a different way, and City also does a lot of other stuff, like the combat and the third act, a lot better than Asylum, but to say that it does everything better than Asylum I think is not necessarily true.

Disappointed to see Batman: The Movie so low. It really was one of Ocean's best games back when it launched. To be fair though, the CPC version was grim. The C64 and Amiga versions were good and pretty faithful to the movie.
I also loved this game. More on Amiga . becours of the driving and flying level
If Batman Begins (PS2) isn't in the top 10, I will lose it.

I disagree fundamentally on this list but I appreciate your hard work on sir I salute you!!!
Batman Begins
That film has pretty much killed any hopes of another Bruce Wayne Batman origin story for being pretty much flawless and starting a beloved trilogy and leading into one of the best loved films of all time in The Dark Knight
The reason this is my favourite above The Dark Knight is simply because it is somewhat light and fun compared to it's sequels, making for easy viewing to pass away an evening in a more relaxed manner
"What is the point of all those pushups if you can't even lift a bloddy log." Michael Caine was amazing as Alfred in this movie especially
Most Ocean software gamers were pretty good at their time and it’s a bit unfair to rank them so badly considering what they were up against on computers at the time
I actually enjoyed arkham origins more than arkham knight
Over reliance on batmobile and lack of boss fights ruined it for me.
True, hopefully the next one will be a good balance of the two. Keeping my fingers crossed for Gamescom
Yeah, I'd much rather play Origins any day than play Knight.
TellTale Batman over any of the Arkham games is bs
KeiFresh I played the whole telltale game and it’s boring as fuck
Swezed & zNightmare69 no it’s not, not at all.
Russian Foxy The pirate fox You’ve never even played the second season, have you?

@The Shadow I've played all the seasons
Maybe better than Arkham Origins, if that much. But all Rocksteady entries are far superior. Now, if they called it "Bruce, the Telltale series", I would have to concede. Because it really was the best Bruce Wayne game.
I go back and forth on Asylum and City. I definitely agree that the Metroid-esque level design in Asylum is overall more satisfying than the open-world City, but on the other hand, I do enjoy the third act of City more than the disappointing finale of Aslym. Those would be my top 2 Batman games, with the absolutely legendary NES game at third place.
Batman Returns for SNES was outstanding.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 The Genesis beat 'em up was good too.
Batman:The Animated Series (GB) - talk about how basically competent it is, subsequently rank dozens of incompetent games higher.
I believe they use other metrics than just their own opinion of each game.

Still think Batman & Robin's worse, though.
Batman Rise of Sun Tsu was my first batman game. It was very challenging but I did enjoy the game. The combat was very fun and each character had their own style. Also play with friends their was co op combat combos which looked really cool.
@DejaVoodooDoll It sold like hotcakes and is seen as a great game. By your logic the Nes game is overrated garbage because you're a Nintendo fanboy.
@DejaVoodooDoll Well not our fault you can't appreciate good games. It sold terrifically well.
@DejaVoodooDoll Again Ocean made games that scored really highly. Platoon, Robocop and The Addams Family from memory got great reviews. Robocop especially for Spectrum was a massive success. Batman on the Amiga sold the computer.
DejaVoodooDoll It makes sense that the people who played it think its good since its a good game, You know...? Fun to play.
I personally prefer Arkham Origins over Arkham Knight, Asylum is definitely the best. Also there's way too many versions of Batman Returns

19:20 - That's literally straight up a Mortal Kombat reskin and revamp.
I was thinking the same thing.
I thought Arkham Knight was one of the best games I’ve ever played
I burst out laughing
Interviewer - how many "Batman Returns" games do you want to make?
Literally any games company from the 90s - Yes
I strongly disagree with several placements:
-Arkham Origins should be in top 10...any title that introduces you to Gotham's history (Cyrus Pinkney, Solomon Wayne, and history of major landmarks) is a top 10 Batman game
-Arkham Knight should be higher, especially against Batman: Vengeance and any Lego Batman title...I think Arkham Knight did a great job...I didn't like how it concluded the Arkham trilogy, either, but I never had any problems with the Batmobile and the tank combat...the "Most Wanted" and "A Matter of Family" story DLCs made the game that much better
-Why is Lego Batman 2 over Lego Batman 3? I've played them both, Green Loontern is hilarious, and exploring the Lantern homeworlds is great
In reality, each of the Arkham trilogy (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Knight) and Arkham Origins are easy to replay and have a different experience...you can push yourself in combat and stealth encounters to try new things each time you play...I am still finding new ways to approach Stealth Sequences in Arkham Knight
Otherwise, I guess the placement is acceptable...100% agree with Arkham Asylum's placement.

@@Great_Scott_ literally no one cares to read all of this.. Lol
