What I enjoyed about this story was that Bruce/Bats was unaware of this secret society, and really dials in on his necessity to be certain of & have contingencies set aside for all things.
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo batman Run is still one of my favorite comic runs. I do like the new one with fail safe, though, but the new 52 one is still one of my favorites
I've seen all of the Batman animated/live shows and movies, but never read the comics. My god, some of this was just... brutal. Thank you once again for doing all of the work to put one of these videos together. It's wonderful to learn about all of this content I had missed. The visuals and your musical voice are a great combination. Keep up the great work!
That Knightfall series is the one that should be told in animated form. Of all the animations DC has produced, The Death of Superman/Reign of Supermen series, and the Knightfall series, are the 2 series that are the most deserving of animated movies.
Great job man on covering your favorite batman stories especially with knightfall A death in the family and The court of owls and how they reshape the DC universe and Batman history as a whole. :)
My 5 Favorite, Greatest, & Best Batman Stories Of All Time Are: 1. Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On A Serious Earth 2. Batman: The White Knight 3. Batman: Ghost Stories 4. Batman: The War Of Jokes & Riddles 5. Batman: The Killing Joke
Good work Owen thanks to you I know more about Batman than I ever thought that I would and as a long time Batman fan I'm grateful to you Owen. Like you I like "comics" especially the Batman comic books. Again good work done here.
Owen...this was an excellent, and bar-setting visual essay on "The Batman"!!! I have saved it, and if I can, I will download it to my files. Superbly well done. BTW, I am 70 years old and have been reading "The Batman" since 1962. I know the "Batman" history and character. I bought the books when they were a dime a piece. God forbid 12 cents, 15 cents, (or shudder) 25 cents an issue.😂
Well done. I really enjoyed your appreciation of Knightfall. More often, it's considered just a gimmick like the death of Superman, and I'm sure in some aspects it was since DC was getting stomped by Marvel and the rise of Image. But as you point out, the editors' true intentions, as stated in many interviews the truth is DC wanted to show the comic readers, and let's face it the 90s speculation boom guys a world without Batman and Superman and to remind us how important they are and that we took them for granted. Something like that. Either way, it's a great video!
Is knightfall the alternate one where he's replaced by the guy he trusted to protect gotham while he recovered from having his back broken? The one where he is just a brain , head, and floating torso, respectively. That one was WILDDDD.
After watchin your Gotham by Gaslight video, I think you would like Gotham 1919-1939. It's a series of TH-cam videos (Based on an unoficial book) reimagining Batman and his mithos in the 1930's. I really recomend them, they are amazing.
Good work done on this two hour Batman video Owen not only do you like comics you sure do know your subject matter especially when it comes to our favorite caped crusader Batman.
Batman detective comics Penciled by Graham Nolan 682 through 688 along with Jim Aparo Batman knightfall and Batman knightsend are my favorite Batman Storylines of all time
Again, excellent work! I would say out of the more modern takes on Batman, the Court of Owls, Zero Year, White Knight, and Curse of the White Knight have had the most impact on me and are all great! I do have a soft spot for Dark Nights Metal as well, which is still pretty good and I do try to make time to read it once a year. I do need to read Beyond the White Knight and the Chip Zdarsky run on the main title; I've heard excellent things about both and when I have more stable income and time again, I definitely will finally read through them.
Great video as always!! The Gotham by gaslight section made me wonder: do you think you’d ever do a video on Hellboy? Do you like Mike Mignola’s other works?
When I see this amazing stories I start to think on reading it. Than I see something like this 1:58:10 and the changes of writers and than I remember why I read mangá instead of comics....
I feel like it’s so obvious now but watching this made me realize Bane is named Bane because he was literally created to be the Bane of Batman wow lol 😂
As someone who bought and read Batman comics as a kid...and then progressed to the graphic novels in my late teens, I always felt the movies - although some are great - could have done more to capture the characters I grew up with. The Burton/Keaton Batman was great just because it was so amazing to see the character on the big screen. Both Keaton and Nicholson as Joker did a good job with the characters...mixing the comic book personas with versions of the characters the public were used to from the Adam West series. But Keaton' Bruce Wayne was pretty one-dimensional...and other central characters such as Alfred and Commissioner Gordon were really overlooked...which I found disappointing. The Nolan/Bale/Ledger Batman and Joker were a definite step up. The story of Batman's evolution was great to watch over the trilogy and Bale played a great Batman supported by well developed roles for Alfred and Gordon...helped in turn by these characters being played by legendary actors Michael Caine and Gary Oldman...and Heath Ledger's Joker is the most satisfying big screen adaptation of the character. Again, one of the main letdowns for me with this trilogy was Bale's portrayal of Bruce Wayne. It was a little better than Keatons...but it was still pretty superficial imo. Bale's Wayne was presented more as a rich kid who had gone through loss and simply wanted revenge...which is fair enough to begin with...but as the films progressed, we didn't really see the psychological trauma that Bruce faced as the Batman became more and more famous in Gotham. The other huge letdown for me was Nolan's portrayal of Bane. Hardy did a great job...and the scene where he breaks Batman's back is amazing imo. But Bane's stature as Batman's most dangerous enemy wasn't put across enough for me. The comic Bane was a genius as well as having preternatural strength...and so the way Bale's Batman finally defeated him seemed unbelievable for me. The Bruce Wayne side of the character was, for me, best delivered by Ben Affleck. The actor was able to portray the damage Bruce Wayne always has simmering below the surface. And his fury bubbling over as a result of the destruction of the Wayne Enterprises building by the Superman/Zodd fight was the first time we really started to see that Bruce Wayne was not just a guy who played a role of philanthropic playboy billionaire to simply give him a cover story for Batman...with the 2 roles being separate from one another. Ben Affleck was never given the chance to expand the character. I think if he had been allowed to direct BvS and a standalone Batman movie, we would have seen the best big screen version of both Bruce Wayne and Batman from a psychological pov. Now we have Robert Pattinson's Batman...and I think it's a very good representation of an early Bruce Wayne/Batman. Batman's lack of understanding of being a hero, rather than simply being a symbol of fear for criminals was a great character arc. It really showed the mental weakness in the character and how he had to evolve. I hope the movies continue to show us Bruce Wayne's damaged persona...and the internal battle he has to balance being a 'normal' person with being the Caped Crusader.
Earth One really should have continued. That team sounded interesting and Killer Croc being an ally would have been neat to explore. Earth One feels like in interesting idea to expand upon. #BringBackEarthOne
No John Byrne's Generations? I did like the first two of those. Guess they might have been more "World's Finest" stories. I'd like to see Batman stripped of the mask, more of a pulp fiction character, more like the Shadow. Bruce Wayne, Avenger! The Bat!
I love Batman and all his alternate versions. Owl man was interesting because it was an evil Batman but the exact opposite of Batman. He was completely nihilist. Nothing mattered to the extent that he didn’t even take his skills an abilities to their extreme. The Batman who laughs is awesome because it’s basically if Batman went completely crazy from joker toxin and amassed tons of power. But what I want to see is an evil or morally dark grey Batman who does care. Not driven by nihilism but instead by the desire to be best and achieve the most. He should start out being okay with guns and then as time goes on they just become pointless. Gaining multiple power rings, genetic manipulation to gain super powers, etc. I want to see Batman with the powers of superman, Shazam, cyborg, and the flash, with a ring for every color of the emotional spectrum, extensive magical knowledge and ability, with nth metal weapons and armor combined with angelic magic and motherbox tech. His batcave should be centered around a stolen möbius chair. Basically I want a Batman so powerful superman has to put on special armor to fight him. Rather than Batman wearing power armor to fight superman.
Enjoying the video, but you said the murders commenced on Oct 31st 1888, and the newspaper clearly reported "two more murders", so at least half the murders were before the end of September. In fact the first victim was discovered a month before the newspaper's date, August 30, 1888
You're right, thanks for pointing this out. August 31 is the correct date, and what I had written in my script. I must have misspoke when recording and not caught it. Ugh.
Wasn't the reason for Earth One to end was cause of the mayor layoff and the reset of the univeser where they wanted introduce the 5Gs and they gave Geoff Johns one last volume since it was almost finish.
Jason Todd really really wants revenge on all of the people who called in and voted for his death...lol😅😅😅😅 Wouldn't that be great for an else worlds story???

I loved when Bane being fought Bruce years later, when Bruce was at full power and not exhausted and he beat his ass
Owen kicking out awesome content as always and now in overlength.

Dude this a great idea (& video so far)! Wouldn't mind if you did the same for other characters.
Sure thing!
Love your channel
Batman - I never smile
Batman who laughs - I can help with that
This video is awesome
In Knightfall, Robin is shocked because Azrael lets Abattoir die. But in Batman Begins, Batman does the same to Ra’s Al-Ghul.
Still my favorite and no. 1 Superhero of all time. Period!
I feel like it’s so obvious now but watching this made me realize Bane is named Bane because he was literally created to be the Bane of Batman wow lol 😂
Very good video 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Green Lantern: Earth One is great! I hope it gets at least a third volume!
Batman in the Victorian era? That sounds awesome!
Owen, these videos are great...but, get a thesaurus my man. If I hear 'status quo' one more time I'm gonna lose my mind.
Lovely video, no notes. ❤️
To a 10 year old kid... When I saw Batmans back break... It was definitely a moment... All the kids were talking about. I know I was

There was no "London Evening News" in 1888 either, I don't think the newspaper is real.
Also, the letter shown in 36:09 is not the "From Hell" letter.
Will you break down the history of the story "The Dark Knight Returns"
Wasn't the reason for Earth One to end was cause of the mayor layoff and the reset of the univeser where they wanted introduce the 5Gs and they gave Geoff Johns one last volume since it was almost finish.

very nice music
What do you mean by "and beyond?" Poetry? Interpretive dance?
Puppetry?
Wolverine and gambit victims it's like the poor man's Batman by gaslight
I actually have the original comic of this. It's the only one true batman piece I still possess.
