No problem for watching till the end. I actually needed the info on how to go through all of it. After all. Great video. Personally, I don't mind carrying a specific charger for it because I religiously use the N3DSXL dock. If there was a way to still use the dock and have the USB C connection, I'd definitely do this myself.
Thank you very much! You could find another place for the USB-c connector inside the case and use it in parallel. This should allow you to use it with your beloved dock and USB.
you could use a break out board just to the side of the original port, seen a few videos where the hole for the usb c port is near the area for a lanyard strap, just a bit more trimming of the case required. also easier to solder in as you are not removing the original charging port, just piggy backing off the connections
There is a simpler way to do it, there is USB C female ports with tiny boards which has already solded all the pins on the board, you just need to connect the negative and positive to the main board and you're good to go. I have seen people using these in iPhone mods and they also work great with DS/3DS/2DS. But you did a real nice job on this on, I wouldn't have the patience to solder these microscopic pins haha
Hehe, you are right; as I said in the video, it was more of an experiment and a challenge for me! I used the mentioned board in this video to mod a PS4 Controller to USB-C: th-cam.com/video/VvKj_7JHxzo/w-d-xo.html 😉

Or you could buy a microUSB->3DS adapter like what I did. Or buy a USBC->3DS cable is another option too. Also, if I was to do this and expand the plastic hole on the port, a flat needle file is all I would use for that. You would end up with a rectangular hole, perhaps a fine circular needle file could round out the thin side/corners. But that may be still to big.
It is just easier to purchase a USB to 3DS cable so you can use that with a powerbank or something like that for when you are out and about with your 3DS, if you carry it in a larger carrycase or something. This is still a neat idea though, but can be fairly unnecessary depending on how you look at it. This mod does makes accessibility to having the correct cables much easier so I'll give it that, but the hassle may not be worth it to some (And cutting into the case).
Would you mind linking to some of the parts you use? The digital magnifier, the board holder, and maybe even a soldering iron/station you recommend? I'm about to move and plan to just start over with my workspace, and have an imported Famicom New 3DS XL from Japan that I've region changed and would love to do this to.

honestly i would love to get my 3ds with a usb c charging port. Most of my devices use usb C so being able to clear up the clutter of wires that i have would be nice. The only thing is that i suck at putting things together so this would be impossible for me but i woudnt mind paying someone to do this for me because this is a really good upgrade.
I really enjoyed this video. I've had my printers for years and still don't know how to use fusion. Do you have any suggestions on good tutorials to learn? The fact that you imported the photo and then "traced" it was something I didn't realize could be done! Sub'd!
That’s awesome. I actually want a DS like that because I’m dreading bringing the proprietary charger with me. USB-C all the way!!! question though: I have a small gaming handset (Miyoo Mini v2) that has a problem with power input. It does charge on lower power inputs like a power bank, but if you connect the MacBook charger, it’s not charging. Any idea how this Nintendo DS will behave?
Hi Rob, I think this is gonna happen, when you are using charger that are PD (Power Delivery) only. The port in this console is "dumb". A PD charger uses a protocol to communicate with the device. Our device can't answer the charger and that is the reason why the charger won't output anything.
the manufacturer of the Miyoo Mini states on their website that you should ONLY use chargers that put out 5V at 1A, nothing more! And that no powerchargers should be used whatsoever. So you should look into some older USB A wall connectors from old smartphones for example, to not blow up your powerpack. That would be a shame considering how hard it is to get your hands on a mini these days ;)
Great question! At 7:50, I used a desoldering braid to remove the solder. It's an essential tool for cleaning up mistakes or reworking joints. hope before 2030 someone finds a way to incorporate these in n2ds XLs, it's more compact to me but if I ever find a good priced Galaxy N3ds I'd defs try this
@@CanWeFixThat There was the dual ips screens that in rare cases showed up on the 3ds but honestly I would love to see a possible Oled upgrade with a resolution increase.

You may find some problems down the line, some chargers won't give 5v without a 5.1k resistor on (at least one of) the cc pins of the connector. (one = only one side will work) Also; for some reason, not all cables connect the shell to the gnd pins ?? But great work !
Hi Count! You are right! As mentioned in the video, the whole project was more or less a proof of concept, if it's possible to accomplish this mod with just a bare usb c connector. I am thinking about a revisit with the mentioned resistors and a usb-c breakout board.
How hard would it be to enable some extra mods like file exploring or video output? I haven't done a lot of 3ds modding, but I know they make PCB's for video output at the least.
@@CanWeFixThat I more meant if it was possible to use the higher speeds of USB C in conjunction with the 3ds Capture board, or additionally find a way to use the 3ds' micro SD as a external media source when plugging the USB cable into your PC
This isn't really necessary but it's cool to see. Probably won't try to do it myself or ask anyone else to do it. Maybe far in the future I can try, who knows. The only mod i really want for my 3ds is a capture card
Hi Dylan, nope, that’s not possible. At least, I don’t know how it could be done. It would require a controller that can communicate with the internal memory of the console.
Hi, that is a very valid question. This method just works with USB-A => USB-C cables. The maximum I have seen so far, was a charging current of around 1A.
Really sweet mod. I was planning on doing this with my New 3DS XL but I like the look of the normal New 3DS more so I'm gonna do this on a Japanese New 3DS. Do you think this would be any easier or harder for this?
its sad you cant use the original charging dock with it since you removed the metal parts on the sides. those are really useful if the charger stops working all together and you dont want to open it up. good video 👍
Unfortunately, I was not aware of this at the time. Maybe cutting just the middle part and securing the metal parts for the charger is possible. It could be a space problem, but it is worth a try! 🤓
If we don't have a hot air station, is there another easy way to get the original port unsoldered? Still waiting on my proper soldering bits to deliver so I am figuring out if I'll need something else. Got Flux, Wick, and an iron currently.
Hi Zane! You could try getting low-melt solder. This will be liquid for extended periods, giving you a better chance to heat all spots simultaneously. I highly recommend watching my video on this topic for solder equipment recommendations. It shows you everything you need for a starter! 🫶 th-cam.com/video/2gkLmnuPV-s/w-d-xo.html | Learn How To Solder - The Must-Have Equipment For Starters!
Are you sure this is not dangerous for the lifespan of the console, as in, maybe i accidently use too strong of a charger, like a fast charge or something. What is the potential damage?
Hi MacMashPotato, the maximum I have seen was 1A, which is the maximum. A fast charger won't work because the resistors must be installed; I have not done that in this mod.
Im very curious, could be a Qi wireless mod possible? I have thinking mixing this up with the Niilkin magic tags since it's "easier" but, something without the USB C would be interesting.
Huh, are all the VCC lines in the USB-C port all connected? I would have figured you'd need to tie at least a pair of VCC together to account for both insertion orientations of the cable (but maybe I don't understand USB-C)
@Les Orchard You are right, the method in this video shows a modification where just USB-A => USB-C is possible. It is not usable with PD chargers. I will do a follow up video with a break out board, where we include the needed resistors for the mentioned support. So stay tuned for that! 😉
Hi Pandakid, that is definitly the way to got. With help of the mentioned break out board, it is much easier to get the soldering done. Furtermore you are able to solder the needed resistors for a charger using power delivery (PD). I will show this method in an upcoming episode. Stay tuned! 😉
this seems like a viable option for 3ds' with broken charging ports. I've looked up the oem ports and they are all sold out on aliexpress. there's some on ebay for $11 or more I think. I'm not paying $11 for one port wtf.
If only the new Nintendo 3DS also had the other card slot, Like the DS Lite, the only one they made that can play Gameboy Games. Feel like it could be possible, but it would need an entire internal redesign. ):
I'm surprised there's nobody on youtube that has already done anything on this Honestly I've seen and heard so many complaints about how the new Nintendo 3DS Should have had the feature of the Nintendo lite, But I guess it's just a project that Nintendo has abandoned ):
I am pretty sure that it is nearly impossible to accomplish this mod. That's why nobody has tried it so far. I will note the topic; maybe I can find a way to think about it.
OK. I will still have hope it is possible for the new Nintendo 3DS, I only think of it because of how much different the sizes between them. There's. gotta be stuff in the new 3DS that doesn't need to be as big as it is. but you would probably have to redo the entire system. Basically, new motherboard, new everything. It would just be a lot of work to even be done. That would be another reason why nobody has done it But they complain about it still. It's basically just making a whole new Console at that point. Which I won't say is a bad thing The old 3Ds Has always lasted longer with its battery than the new XL model, which I felt makes no sense. Just got a new battery for it too. So it's not that.

This is such a unique way to mod your 3ds. I wish I could do it myself but unfortunately i lack the tools and experience for it
Glad you like it. If you interested in such things, just start small to get some confidence. For me it is a hobby that I am really enjoying!
What brand of screwdriver is that? The cylinder-looking one? I love it!
It is from Xiaomi, but not sure, if it's still available.
This is a mod I can get behind
USB C is such a nice mod.
They make USB A to 3DS connections. With some tinkering you could make a USB C to 3DS Connector. There is no need to modify the system.
That's true, but then you need a special cable in your bag. But sure, this is an improvement to the original charging brick! 😀
honestly i would love to get my 3ds with a usb c charging port. Most of my devices use usb C so being able to clear up the clutter of wires that i have would be nice. The only thing is that i suck at putting things together so this would be impossible for me but i woudnt mind paying someone to do this for me because this is a really good upgrade.
USB-C charging and video out mod would be dope
Hi! I agree, but I have no idea how to accomplish this! When somebody has some ideas, I would try it out. 😁
I really enjoyed this video. I've had my printers for years and still don't know how to use fusion. Do you have any suggestions on good tutorials to learn? The fact that you imported the photo and then "traced" it was something I didn't realize could be done! Sub'd!
Hi astrocity! I learned the most stuff from @MakersMuse. Here his playlist for CAD rookies! 🙂

i did this mod back in the day with mini usb port on a nintendo ds, very easy
@@CanWeFixThat Ahhh OK makes sense. So generally use non-PD. Is a non-PD cable enough, even if, let's say, it's connected to an Apple powerbrick?
I would rather say the power brick itself is the problem in this chosen scenario. ;) But I am not an expert by any means! Please keep that in mind!
the manufacturer of the Miyoo Mini states on their website that you should ONLY use chargers that put out 5V at 1A, nothing more! And that no powerchargers should be used whatsoever. So you should look into some older USB A wall connectors from old smartphones for example, to not blow up your powerpack. That would be a shame considering how hard it is to get your hands on a mini these days ;)
Really interesting video, thanks.
Very gladly.
What's the stuff you used at 7:50 to remove the solder?
Great question! At 7:50, I used a desoldering braid to remove the solder. It's an essential tool for cleaning up mistakes or reworking joints. If you're new to soldering, I cover all the must-have tools in my beginner series. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/2gkLmnuPV-s/w-d-xo.html. Would love to hear what you think!
@@CanWeFixThat Oh, thanks a lot for answering! I have caught a recent interest for soldering and I am interested in getting initiated. I will totes give your video a watch!
Brilliant! 🫶
Where did you get the large PCB Holder?
Love your videos!
Hey Kirk! Thank you very much! I have added the PCP Holder link in the description! 🤓
als ich den UV Kleber gesehen habe ist mir klar geworden das ich mich auf deutschen Territorium befinde.
Your video so good of idea you will make it far and the near future
Thanks for the good vibes! 😉
hope before 2030 someone finds a way to incorporate these in n2ds XLs, it's more compact to me but if I ever find a good priced Galaxy N3ds I'd defs try this
Hi Greyhoundsniper, I would assume, that the way would be very similar to accomplish this mod.
hey are the needed pins in your video in the same place by other port or is there a other pin combination?
Hi! To which pins do you exactly refer?
really relaxing voice btw never would have guessed your german xD
Hi kaizocrunsh, thank you so much for your kind words! What was your initial guess? 😁
How you made your setup look at cartoony at the end there?
This search for cartoon effect in connection with your used video editing software. This should give you some results. 😉
I'd love to see a screen mod on the New 3ds xl like the gameboy's.
Hi Eli, are there mods out regarding to the screen?
@@CanWeFixThat There was the dual ips screens that in rare cases showed up on the 3ds but honestly I would love to see a possible Oled upgrade with a resolution increase.
@Eli ez That would be indeed very cool, but I guess this would be tough, you would need some kind of co processor to refine the graphics.
@@CanWeFixThat True if your looking for more 3ds mods there is this one guy who did a bunch to his new 3ds xl.
He did a lot of mods to it but the most notable ones are the bluetooth mod and wireless charging mod he added.
Link: th-cam.com/video/f7lGI3yGzPQ/w-d-xo.html
@@EliezYT Thank you! Nice mods! I think in the future, the wireless charging mod will be featured here.
You may find some problems down the line, some chargers won't give 5v without a 5.1k resistor on (at least one of) the cc pins of the connector. (one = only one side will work)
Also; for some reason, not all cables connect the shell to the gnd pins ??
But great work !
Hi Count! You are right! As mentioned in the video, the whole project was more or less a proof of concept, if it's possible to accomplish this mod with just a bare usb c connector. I am thinking about a revisit with the mentioned resistors and a usb-c breakout board.
You can get some super tiny breakout boards, with resistor! Although it's somewhat difficult to find ones with 2
Where's the fun in that? 😀
How hard would it be to enable some extra mods like file exploring or video output? I haven't done a lot of 3ds modding, but I know they make PCB's for video output at the least.
File exploring? What exactly do you mean? Video output is only possible with a capture card or a soft mod via software.
@@CanWeFixThat I more meant if it was possible to use the higher speeds of USB C in conjunction with the 3ds Capture board, or additionally find a way to use the 3ds' micro SD as a external media source when plugging the USB cable into your PC
@@Cain532. I don't know, not very into this kind of stuff, sorry! Maybe someone else?
Wish I had one of these my 3ds charger port broke recently
My newest video covers a much easier method to convert any USB device to USB-C! I’ve linked it in the description and the pinned comment! 🙌🏻
Its fine i'll just go sifting through my room ever 4 months when I feel like charging it
Seems tricky to do, but man, what an awesome mod. I'm not that confident with my noodle hands though lol
wouldn't it be easier to make an inversed bezel piece that goes inside the shell? Then it would be flush and also no danger of it falling out.
Yes, but after my unsuccessful attempt to expand the port opening, I decided on the alternative option. 😆
I was worried this would be the c stick replacement lol. That has been paraded way too much for how prone to failure it is
True! 😬
What makes it prone to failure?
I just noticed your TH-cam name is that of Bob the builders catch phrase.
ARE YOU BOBBIE BUILDERMAN?!
It was back then until I realized exactly what you said! 😆
This isn't really necessary but it's cool to see. Probably won't try to do it myself or ask anyone else to do it. Maybe far in the future I can try, who knows. The only mod i really want for my 3ds is a capture card
link to that usb meter at 26:47?
Just search for "FNB48"
@@CanWeFixThat thank you
Would it be possible to install a thunderbolt connector and achieve file and video transfer
Hi Dylan, nope, that’s not possible. At least, I don’t know how it could be done. It would require a controller that can communicate with the internal memory of the console.
Dear God how did you get away with bending those connectors...
Hi CheezyFriez, luckily my chosen connector just needed some small adjustments. 😬
Forgive me, as I don't know a lot:
Do you need a special Adapter to charge your 3DS so it doesn't overcharge?
Hi, that is a very valid question. This method just works with USB-A => USB-C cables. The maximum I have seen so far, was a charging current of around 1A.
Really sweet mod. I was planning on doing this with my New 3DS XL but I like the look of the normal New 3DS more so I'm gonna do this on a Japanese New 3DS. Do you think this would be any easier or harder for this?
Thank you very much! It should be very similar.
its sad you cant use the original charging dock with it since you removed the metal parts on the sides. those are really useful if the charger stops working all together and you dont want to open it up. good video 👍
Unfortunately, I was not aware of this at the time. Maybe cutting just the middle part and securing the metal parts for the charger is possible. It could be a space problem, but it is worth a try! 🤓
WHAT SCREWDRIVER IS THAT? I NEED ONE! ALSO AMAZING VIDEO!
This one is called "Xiaomi Mi Cordless Precision Screwdriver Kit".

mabe try to seend litle bit of plastic to be flusher fit for usb cable. sory for bad english
I think it is worth to check that out! Im on it! Stay tuned! 😉
I’ve seen other usb C mods but most have them also come with custom pcb with them. Do you know why?
Hi Pandakid, that is definitly the way to got. With help of the mentioned break out board, it is much easier to get the soldering done. Furtermore you are able to solder the needed resistors for a charger using power delivery (PD). I will show this method in an upcoming episode. Stay tuned! 😉
Hi, what is the model of the multimeter probes you are using?
+William Li Hi! These are called: MECHANIC P30 1000V 20A
need to find a way to do this myself.
All I see here... Is me breaking my 3DS xD
Well done!
Thank you! Just give it a try with a not so expensive device. 💪
Would it be possible to connect that port to the SD card so you don't need to unscrew the back piece?
Hi! This is not a viable possibility, at least I think so.
this seems like a viable option for 3ds' with broken charging ports.
I've looked up the oem ports and they are all sold out on aliexpress. there's some on ebay for $11 or more I think. I'm not paying $11 for one port wtf.
You know you can get plain old USB to Nintendo DS 3rd party cables, right?
Hi! Yeah, sure! That's true, but then you need a special cable in your bag.
Future proofing is a sin at game companies
OK, hear Me out, would it be possible to have charging AND a capturecard output in one USB-C Plug?
Hi Galexion, this came up several times in the comments, but unfortunately I have no clue to accomplish this. :-/
Is that when u on ur 3ds and the light goes blue and there a pop then turns off
What exactly do you mean?
If only the new Nintendo 3DS also had the other card slot, Like the DS Lite, the only one they made that can play Gameboy Games. Feel like it could be possible, but it would need an entire internal redesign. ):
That is a pretty nifty idea, but I guess this would require also a highly modified firmware. :-(
I'm surprised there's nobody on youtube that has already done anything on this Honestly I've seen and heard so many complaints about how the new Nintendo 3DS Should have had the feature of the Nintendo lite, But I guess it's just a project that Nintendo has abandoned ):
So it's not that.
do you offer this as a service?
Hi Mark, nope! I am not running a repair business or smth.
