- Modding the hardware on the new 3ds XL is sometimes almost as easy has installing custom firmware!
Tired of constantly searching for your 3ds specific wall-wart to charge it, quickly and easily add a USB-C charging port to your new 3ds XL and be done with it, even charge on the go with a battery bank!

Great little mod, USB-C has become so ubiquitous and these older devices can live on with this. Bet this can be done to many other devices so long as they charge with 5v. Also good to see old puffy getting replaced, that little bloated guy was probably not a great idea to fly with or stored with your new camera.
at first i thought you were going to de-solder the original connector and put the USB on its place, this seems like a good alternative though

Thanks for the video, gonna buy some soldering kit to train for now. Really want to do this mod because my 3DS charging port been loosing connection lately, but I'm not sure in my skills for now.
Be VERY careful, as a longtime console modder improper temperature and not using flux are the 2 biggest mistakes.
Also if you feel overwhelmed, stop take 5 then judge if you should continue.
@@xai38-809hi, just wondering what temperature should be used (around the charging port if it’s area specific) i don’t believe my solder is temperature controlled, is that going to be a problem (i can try borrow a friends if it is)
@@SunnyCress roughly 250-300c, id spend the extra ~20-30 on some low melt solder and some really good flux. It makes all of the difference.

12:50 is it better to do a cursory power up and charge check before buttoning up? Just to save the plastic your screwing into.
No point buttoning up if you get white smoke or having to open again nothing happens…
The face follow is killing me, other than that great video dude!
You can tell when a youtuber gets a new toy cus they`ll use it in a video ASAP so they can justify its purchase
(dont worry, this was just a test of it, wont be a main thing going forward, just wanted to try out the auto track)
Did the same thing, but I added a Bluetooth module as well. A bit more complicated but still a perfect fit! You should do it too.
What abbility does it give the 3ds

The osmo cam was super nice as a viewer! It followed you pretty damn well, the color was great, dynamic range was good in your setting. I hope that you figure out how to use it for live streams!

Nice video and the new camera setup is great. Can the DJI be setup for an area before panning left - right ?
It can do a few canned motions like rotate, but for this video i was just trying out the face tracking feature, i wish you could tell it to keep your head in a specific portion of thje frame instead of being dead center and allow some movement before tracking, it seems a bit too jumpy atm imo

There are a few mods to add that, although they seem to be a bit more invasive
Broke 2 of my 4-pin ribbon cable connectors because I didn't know what I was doing. Is there a specific reason you have to remove the PCB and solder the wires below the board? Are there risks soldering it to the top?
does it matter that usb c breaker board i use, ive seen smaller ones and i feel that would be optinal but i also wnt it to charge fast.

increadible vid, the camera face follow was a tad too strong as it was bascially just folowing tiny tiny movements

Wonder if you could break out data to the micro SD slot as well so you could add/remove things from the card without removing it from the device? Either way, really cool project! Might have to give it a shot myself
i believe there’s a homebrew program you can use to wirelessly send/receive files from a computer, haven’t done it myself but saw a video that mentioned it
This is sick! Although I’m having a hard time finding the proper usb c board for sale. Also, there are no tutorials on how to do this mod on a regular sized New 3DS, I’m curious if it fits the same?

Cause it’s more troublesome compared to adding new extra port. Not to mention that there are many TYPE-C ports with multiple pin layouts (some 2, others 4/6, or full)
thats an interesting video. Is it actually possible to connect that kind of 3ds with a pc via usb c port? for loading data from pc to 3ds?
No sadly. At least not to my knowledge. The configuration in the video only lets you charge, and I don't think you can connect the data pins to anywhere on the 3ds sadly.
Hi there! i Followed your tutorial step by step, even used the exact same breakout board that you used. But when i plugged in usb c after everything it didnt work. what can i troubleshoot to get this going?
Try using a generic 5v USB charger and not one of the smarter new ones, as those require extra circuitry so that it gets the right voltage
older chargers or "dumb" chargers just give 5v

I like you used to get shells. Even some fpv sites had special colors and then it all dried up. Still love the iron.
Nice! But keep in mind that USB-C PD (USB-C to USB-C) will most likely not work with just a breakout board
Correct. But the 3ds can't charge anywhere near fast enough to take advantage of PD. It's like 1a max iirc
@@CanuckCreator I know, I just stumbled over this a few month back because I couldn't charge my device on USB PD charger at all. You will need a "normal" USB charger for this to work - my phone charger wouldn't work on a trip for example.

@@janboerschlein if you look closely, the breakout board he used here has pull-down resistors installed, so this one can communicate with PD chargers.

You will want to bridge the 2 data lines if you want that to charge with a USB-C charger.
Why? Why can't we leave it in the configuration that is shown in the video? I'm about to do this and am wondering if this would be an issue

Hey all! Would this work on a Non-New 3DS XL? Are the soldering points the same?
The points are the same, but the regular 3DS XL doesn't have that convenient space at the back where you can place the breakout board. You'll have to be more creative.

i've never thought about custom firmware for my 3DS. unfortunately (or fortunately?), i have to do this mod just to install custom firmware now lol
You dont need to do any hardware mods to install CFW on a 3ds

because it was on a tracking gimbal
The face track is great I believe theres another youtuber "Dwit 3d Canada" also uses face track, IDK how common it is to use that now I dont watch many youutbers.

Can be much easily handled by just buying a cheap charge cable . Risk free. There are also two charge contact metal , you can easily design a charge dock using any usb port type. I made one.
is someone filming you or is this some kind of tracking software? either way, its very disorienting and shaky. don't know if that's just me or not, but yeah....
