Love how this suit appears regularly throughout The Mask Animated Series, but curious the spotted tie and handkerchief in the breast pocket were altered. Guess these designs were difficult to animate.
I know, perhaps that after the movie, The Mask changed them to a red tie with black dots and a red handkerchief with black dots to make people think that he and Stanley are two different people, considering that’s how Stanley got caught out first time around so it’s easier that way that he is not the same mask from before.
Jim Carrey was the perfect Mask. And The Mask is one of the most powerful characters in the comics. The only one who can go up against abstracts and possibly win by trolling the living daylights out of them. The movie Mask was at a fraction of what comics and animated series Mask could do. He was a Hyper Reality Warper, basically like Bugs Bunny. BTW, did you know that this movie was going to be much darker. There are some deleted scenes that show that, but since they had Jim Carrey, they wanted to make it a complete comedy instead. I personally think Jim Carrey would've done a darker version of The Mask perfectly. Like in the comics. It was very dark.
I think they went the right way, here. The comics were pretty much horror dark, and Comic Stanley was worthless without The Mask. The themes are still very dark in the movie, but the genuine wackiness honestly just makes things more interesting IMO. They are different stories. This is a good story.
Their was a moment in the comics where Kathy actually question where the machine gun she just pulled out of thin air came from. The mask is so powerful it even surpasses the wearer’s conscience.
If you have seen the cartoon there is not difference. He is unbelievable. . . it's the same character. I don't know how Jim carry did it. But no other Actor could possibly pull this off.
@@lynny7891 Yes, even I never noticed it before, watched it and it’s awesome (sure it’s not Jim Carrey here, the voice actor Rob Paulson is amazing doing the same character with different personalities)

Funny thing was that New Line bought the rights to the Mask as an alternative franchise to Nightmare on Elm Street, even hiring the director to one of its more popular sequels, Chuck Russell, since the Mask's MO worked similarly to Freddy Kruger (a serial killer that uses magic/reality warping abilities to perform comedic kills). Russell, however, noticed the similarities and was disinterested in going down that road, so he wanted to up the comedy while downplaying the horror elements.

The only comic book film adaptation in which its direction is far different than its source material AND it’s not the “kiss of death”, kinda like what happened to certain adaptations like Judge Dredd and Steel. Sure it’s still respectful towards the source material in some aspects but it does the necessary changes because lets be honest… if they kept the exact tone like the comics, it would’ve flopped *HARD* or become obscure like certain films like Wishmaster and Pumpkinhead. Not saying that those films are bad btw, they’re underrated but in the 90’s especially the time before Scream changed everything, having a horror film try to be successful was hard and rare, especially when the MPAA became highly sensitive and would breathe down your neck.
@Mark Milton Of course The Mask didn't flop, I'm talking about what would've happened if they chose to stick close to the comics as possible. It would've bombed because during the late 80's and early 90's, the MPAA were really against blood and gore and they would cut out a lot of scenes if they had it, this happened to countless horror movies. Also it didn't help that in the 90's we had the infamous incident about Jeffrey Dahmer, so it would've bombed just like what happened to "Body Parts", a horror movie about a man who survives a near fatal accident but loses his arm in the process. Long story short, his new arm has a mind of its own somewhat (don't want to spoil the rest of the story), so yeah a comic book accurate adaptation of The Mask would've bombed in the early 90's like several horror movies before Scream, maybe today is the time for a more accurate adaptation.
