2 ways How to wind back electronic caliper without diagnostic computer on EPB parking hand brake

  • here we show you two alternative methods to changing your brake pads on cars with electronic parking brake caliper.
    if you don't have diagnostic equipment to put it into service mode. or any special wind back tools or piston compressor kits
    method 1 requires spade connectors and wiring plus jump leads to connect to a 12v battery.
    method 2 requires M8 spline (8mm) to wind the piston. and T30 torque to remover the motor bolts.
    both methods here we use only a screwdriver or small pry bar to push the piston after worm gear is wound in.

      Undo electric wire, by poppin its safety clip. use 5mm hex and remove motor behind brake. then remove Caliper. if caliper and piston are too tight, use 5mm hex in the back of the piston winder, turn clock wise. once caliper is off then use c clamp on piston an tighten till resistance. turn the 5mm hex clockwise again till resistance, then turn c clamp more till the piston is retracted. do brake pads and chassie, once set an lubed, mount motor back on piston. then place caliper back. just did a set of backs, no codes no issues. its called a manual reset.

      May be sound stupid but you can try with engine on , because sometime if you you do one wrong connection or your negative positive terminals touch by mistake , these vehicles are very sensitive and end up having bigger issues .

    Excellent advice and step by step guide. My only suggestion here is that some EPB equipped cars first need to have the EPB 'parking on' turned off, before working on the rear brakes, as some EPB's automatically apply themselves as soon as you exit the vehicle/open the door.

    Just a note on this.
    I’ve just done a 2017 Nissan trail. I had to power up the motor and close the pads onto the disc before the handbrake would reset. The hand brake switch was flashing at me and wouldn’t work until I powered up the motor and closed the brake.

    Just a note of warning if you're planning on going for the second method of this process. I had an electronic handbrake (B6 Passat) fail on me whilst abroad on holiday, causing loads of hassle!!! Some clown had carried out the service using the second method and cocked up completely the re-connecting of the motor to caliper, breaking the rubber seal and fitment. Corrosion took hold, and the spline rotted, causing the motor to simply strip the splines off whilst the brake was on full hold/park! Vehicle immobilized and robbing tow trucks and garages rubbing their hands together!!

    there is a 3 way , a more safe way ...
    take a h7 bulb (h4) in serie in your 12volt powerline
    and feed the electric /electronic caliper
    this way you can not break the internaly sprokkets inside the caliper
    power it up or invert the powerline (open or close it )
    (opening takes more time ,than clamping it )
    important !
    before electricaly clamping it with new brakepads press the brakepedaal till there is pressure resistance > than electricaly clamp the brake !
    with 5 wire galiper the 2 bigger connector pins ar for the electro motor
    the 3 smaller are sensor pins

    Well explained. Like any good teacher, you show multiple methods to accomplish the same task. In older systems, we would wind back the piston with a special tool designed to rotate the piston. Is there any reason to do that with electric E brakes?

    • @TeezerDriz
      @TeezerDriz ปีที่แล้ว

      Manually winding back or pushing back the caliper piston on e-piston systems will damage the motor. Manipulating the motor position first, allows the caliper piston to then be moved.

    Not understanding the 1st bit - why not just release the handbrake with the usual switch inside the car (block the wheels in case of roll) which would allow the same piston compression at 2:50?

    • @nothingmuch.3014
      @nothingmuch.3014 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      When you release the handbrake with the switch inside the car, it only retracts the motor, & piston, by a small amount, releasing the brake just enough for the wheel to spin freely.
      When changing the rear brake pads, you must fully retract the motor, then manually push back the piston, in order to gain enough clearance for the caliper to fit over the thick new brake pads.

    The two wire set-up worked great! I thought I was going to have to buy an expensive scanner, or worse yet, have to take it in to the dealer :( Thanks again!

    Great video! But I got a problem, I changed my break pads using method no. 2, but now my breaks seem to work worse than before, it kind of feels like i have to press the breakpedal the floor for the breaks to fully engage. Any idea what I may have done wrong??

      Could of just installed something wrong, not cleaned it good enough ect. Pads sticking on the bracket/clips, pins seized. Hope you figure it out
