Electronic components can be found all over today's vehicles and the once-manual parking brake is no exception. This transition from manual to electronic means that if there is an electrical system failure, an electronic parking brake may become inoperable and not release. While this can make moving your vehicle difficult, Master Technician Bill McAleese of Garage Gurus shows you how to manually release the electronic parking brake.
Bill starts by showing you where to find the electronic parking brake and goes on to explain that the technique involves accessing the rear brake calipers. He gives tips for determining if a vehicle is a candidate for the procedure and then demonstrates how to perform the technique. Count on Garage Gurus to help you get your vehicle repair done right.

Hello Bill, Thanks so much for this video Sir !!!!
Have a 2012 Buick LaCrosse from the “rust belt” Ohio I purchased from auction. Left rear locked up and won’t move. Removed the servo motor, backed the pads up as you described and viola. Purchased a servo from Rock Auto, cleared the codes and all good. Appreciate the information Sir !!!!! BTW had an auto electric shop for 20 years and appreciate your expertise. Thanks

Every single significant and insignificant component must go thru the ecu& BCM via CAN/BUS network, to function on modern vehicles. It's just the way it is.. if this isn't complicated enough.. EVs are coming full swing the those autonomous ones, everything will be so electronically integrated and coded, no owner will be able to put freaking washer fluid in without triggering a fault

So, I already destroyed one of my rear calipers with the electric parking brake on my 2013 VW Tiguan. I figured out how to do it properly, and was able to replace pads on the other side. I now have a parking brake fault with the one caliper still disassembled. I ordered a new caliper. Do I need to reset the fault before I reassemble the new caliper? Or can I reassemble, and then take the car somewhere to have the fault reset (prior to attempting to operate the electric parking brake)?

Question: would you recommend using the electronic parking brake until it fails, or don’t use it and let the load go to the parking pawl (the force will pass through to the transmission mounts)?

Can you please clarify for me: in the Peugeot e208 it has both an electric brake plus a parking brake: when coming to a halt at, say, traffic lights, does one have to apply both the electronic brake AND the parking brake each and every time...?
(My current Renault Zoe only has an electronic brake, therefore it's much more simple whereas the Pug has a second brake, so I'm thoroughly confused.)

Just about every flooded car I have towed this past week is completely dead with this stupid parking brake stuck on… and then the tow hooks are mounted on the sides so when you drag it on to the bed the car starts to rotate sideways, then they put plastics around the lower control arms so that if you hook to those, they’ll break… it’s just GENIUS on top of GENIUS on top of GENIUS!! Definitely can’t do this process with my cell phones ringing every 30 seconds

How about trying this: with the motor off press the start button with your foot off the brake pedal this will put the vehicle in accessory mode. Now, put your foot on the brake and leave it on the brake then press and hold the ebrake button down for 10 seconds on the center dash the brake light will begin to flash as soon as does press the ebrake down fast and release that should release your rear parking brakes which you need to take the vehicle in right away for service. This is for automatics which will be in park, for manuals neutral.

As a tow truck operator, let me assure you that electronic parking brake systems are the most asinine new idea ever.
Besides the obvious what if it breaks down, or what if I lose power or my brakes fail and I need my emergency brake, the last thing we need when trying to tow your disabled car off the highway is to have to figure out a bypass on each and every model produced--we need to move fast. With this system we either have to dolly everything or drag it up a flatbed, or figure out the system.... not something anyone wants to do with traffic zooming by inches away.
This might even be more idiotic than electric shifters or push-to-start buttons.... lots of troublesome components to break down.

Most owners manuals will include directions to release the electromechanical parking brake. For GM cable pull systems, it will include the location of the motor and tools required to release the parking brake (they do this for tow truck drivers). Also, many scan tools include bi-direction controls to release the parking brake.

Thnks for the video! I would like to add that anytime you use a jack/jack stands, one needs to set the parking brake so the car does not move. Since you are manually releasing the parking brake in this instance, blocking the tires would be most appropriate and wise.

Just a note on the electronic parking break on cars. I have a Buick enclave avenir 2020, and the electronic parking system got stuck after I jump started the car, with the message "Service Park Break" on the dashboard and I couldn't move the car even though it was turned on. It turned out that the boost to jump start the car was weak, so another more powerful boost helped get rid of the problem and I was able to get to the GM garage and replace the dead battery. Bottom line, if this happens to you in a GM car, then the dead battery is likely the culprit.

How many of you owned a 20 to 25 year old car with ABS?
If you have then you would know they light up and fixing them properly is very expensive. They can also cause the car to fail road worthy.
Now that is just 1 electronic component, how about adding more electronics to the mix like lane keeping assist, brake assist etc?
These cars will be in the Junk Yard earlier than the cars of the 90's and 00's (12-15 years tops, half the time it took the previous generation to be scrapped).

Since there are so many different types of electro-mechanical parking brake systems on the market and each one works slightly different please refer to the owner’s manual for the vehicle you are working on or refer to repair information with a good description of system operation specific to the vehicle you are working with.

No thanks, I'll stick to Mechanical emergency braking systems thank you very much. Much more reliable and unhackable and easy to work on. Why would anyone want an electronic parking brake especially when everything is being converted to Electric. Why would you want to have an electric braking system that has an electric emergency brake? I would prefer to have a mechanical emergency braking system that is separate from the electronic braking system for safety purposes. That's why it's called an emergency brake not a parking brake.
